Hello, and welcome to A Mind of Her Own! I'm Jennifer Reid, a psychiatrist and the author of the book, Guilt Free, Reclaiming Your Life from Unreasonable Expectations. Today is Episode 4 in my series called Guilt Free, For Real. (Want to catch up? Here are the first three episodes: 1. Solving the Guilt Equation (Finally!) 2. The Guilt Divide: Women, Men and the Emotions We're Taught to Feel 3. Why Can't I Ditch this Awful Guilt? )This episode today (corresponding with chapter three in the book, if you are following along), is all about the Four Furies of Unreasonable Expectations. If you've listened to prior episodes, and I encourage you to do so (see above)! you know about the Guilt Equation, which is that our guilt is based on our expectations of ourselves minus our perceived reality, meaning minus what we notice ourselves doing, which may not even reflect, in fact often doesn't reflect, what we're actually doing. But where do these sky high expectations come from? The Four Furies are:* Constant caretaking: “I feel like it's selfish to take time for myself instead of being available to the people who need me.”* Hyper-accountability: “I adjust what I say or do to manage other people's emotional reactions.” * Seeking perfection: “I have trouble resting because I believe I should be trying to improve myself.” * Having it all: “When I succeed in one area (work, parenting, health) I feel like I'm neglecting another.”Understanding these four big categories for expectations allows you to see that you are not alone. These categories exist because so many women have experienced them. But I'm here to tell you that there is a way forward. Recognizing that yes, these are expectations that you've been taught and expected to carry, but they don't have to be the final answer. If you're saying “should,” someone else is writing your story. When you take control of your expectations, what you want, what you need, and what makes sense for you will create the story you follow. You get to decide what those choices are and rewrite these expectations that you're working through. In future episodes, you will learn how to adjust each of the Guilt Equation variables, both your expectations and our perceived reality.Guilt doesn't have to be your full time job. You are already enough.***Want to build community while lessening your guilt? Start your own Guilt Free Group here. (jenniferremd.com/guilt-free)Thanks for reading and listening to A Mind of Her Own! Guilt has become so commonplace in women's lives that many of us barely notice it anymore. It shows up when we set boundaries, ask for help, prioritize our careers, take time for ourselves, or simply admit that we can't do everything. But what if much of that guilt isn't a reflection of our values at all? What if it's the result of impossible expectations we've been conditioned to carry? In this episode of This Is Woman's Work, Nicole Kalil sits down with Dr. Jennifer Reid, psychiatrist, women's behavioral health expert, educator, podcast host, and author of Guilt-Free: Reclaiming Your Life from Unreasonable Expectations. Together, they unpack how guilt functions as a form of social conditioning, why women are especially vulnerable to carrying unreasonable expectations, and how guilt often keeps us focused on fixing ourselves instead of questioning the systems that created those expectations in the first place. In This Episode, Nicole and Dr. Jennifer Discuss: Why guilt can function as a form of social control. How guilt often masks deeper emotions like sadness, disappointment, and fear. Who benefits when women remain trapped in cycles of guilt and over-functioning. Dr. Jennifer's "Guilt Equation" and how expectations create unnecessary guilt. The four unreasonable expectations—or "Four Furies"—that drive guilt for so many women. How comparison widens the gap between expectations and reality. Why women tend to focus on what they're not doing instead of recognizing what they are doing well. Why the myth of "having it all" continues to fuel guilt and burnout. Dr. Jennifer's SPEAK framework for recognizing and responding to guilt. How to identify recurring guilt triggers and challenge the thoughts behind them. Healthy ways to establish and maintain boundaries without unnecessary guilt. How to navigate relationships with people who resist or ignore boundaries. The difference between healthy guilt that encourages growth and unhealthy guilt that keeps women small. Why letting go of unreasonable guilt is an act of resistance and self-leadership. Ultimately, this conversation is a reminder that not all guilt deserves our attention, and learning to question where it comes from can be a powerful step toward greater freedom and self-trust.  Thank you to our sponsors! Got a good laceration story?! 2. What is one thing you learned from the teaching on 2 Corinthians 8:1-9 and what difference will it make? 3. What is both unreasonable and reasonable about Grace (undeserved kindness)? 4. Talk about the “unreasonable equation” in verse 2: Severe suffering + Overflowing Joy + Extreme Poverty = Rich generosity. 5. Have you ever given “as much as you were able, and even beyond your ability?” (v.3) How'd that go? 6. Do you have any interest in “excelling in the grace of giving?” (v. 7) Any ideas how you might do that? 7. Macedonia inspired Corinth to be generous (v. 8). Who has inspired you and how did they do that? Who are you hoping to inspire? 8. Verse 9 is one of the most pithy and profound descriptions of the Gospel of Jesus – what does it mean and what does it mean to you? 9. If you're a Christian, turns out your rich! The brilliant Wajahat Ali, author of Go Back to Where You Came From, and playwright of The Domestic Crusaders, had me on The LeftHook to share my new book A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women: 20 Steps to Find Your Purpose and Power in a World on Fire. Watch or listen to the full discussion on how to overcome the very real and urgent threat of fascism. (Side note: In France, Marine Le Pen is campaigning for president wearing an ankle monitor, following in the footsteps of her fellow Russian asset, the convicted felon/Epstein wing-man). Trump is doing to our country what he did to the East Wing of our White House. How do we rebuild from the wreckage? That's what A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women is about. It's for anyone tired of Steve Bannon trying to demoralize us and flood the zone with sh*t. It's about concrete steps to stay grounded and focused in a world of chaos, to align your deepest needs and dreams with a higher purpose, creating world domination for the collective good. My own journey begins with being raised on stories of the government trying to kill you, and blame you for the crime, helped by Western corruption to cover-up the torture and murder. I am of course speaking of my Ukrainian heritage and the Holodomor, Stalin's genocide famine in Ukraine. In all my years of studying my family's history and the two monsters, Hitler and Stalin, who drove that history, I look back on America's own, and see the authoritarianism that established this country. The white supremacy blood lust terrorizing Black Americans, Native Americans, mass discrimination and violence against immigrants, and the list goes on. Trump, Stephen Miller, Peter Thiel, and too many others carry on that violent legacy. That's why they're aligned with the Kremlin, which sees Ukrainians as inferior.  In Ukrainian culture, we're taught to fight for our very lives, our voice, our art, our culture, our language, because no one else will. They want to erase us, so we must do the opposite and shine, shine, shine. In Ukrainian culture, art is literally survival. The coded language of poetry preserves historical truth, our shared humanity, our courage and defiance.  Life is incredibly stubborn. Creativity is how we fortify our resilience. A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women provides 20 concrete steps for women–who are the favorite target of fascists, because they fear the fight in us–and their allies–to dream big for themselves and the kind of world we want to live in. That is how we reset the culture, overcome their darkness with our light, and gather our people to create a better world. We are the alternative to their dystopian vision for our future, a future that belongs to us.  To better get to new my new and most personal book, I put together this Q&A:  Empowerment can be a privilege. Many nonwhite women, especially immigrants, are juggling several jobs just to survive. How does this book make space for different lived experiences A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women is based on my own lived experience of being raised in a Ukrainian immigrant family. My grandmothers both worked as maids to survive. So I take nothing for granted when it comes to the diversity of demands on women today. Throughout the book, I share wisdom and insights from women across history. There's also a recommended reading guide in the book, featuring an incredible list of women authors, like Mikki Kendall and trans activist Raquel Willis. I also share a troubling story about a Black mentor telling me to get a white man to join me for my pitch meetings and just sit there. I'm sad to say it did make a difference.  Planting seeds of hope and change – whether that's through launching a dream project like a film, book, business, non-profit, or some other ambitious goal – can be a grind. Does this book highlight organizations on the frontlines doing that unglamorous work in the shadows, helping us build that collective power?  Yes, absolutely! And I made sure that the blurbs (endorsements) featured at the front of the book included voices from grassroots groups, to promote their efforts to a wider audience. Julie Delaurier of Rise and Resist began as an organizer in ACT UP and helped organize Tesla Takedown and No Kings. She also organizes to track and resist ICE raids in NYC. She read the book and provided a heartfelt endorsement. So did civil rights leader Maya Wiley, President of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, and Holley Atkinson of the grassroots group the Media and Democracy Project bringing legal challenges to the existence of Fox News. Isn't self-help ego-driven?  A Reasonable Guide is all about collective action. Individual choices produce collective action. Think of A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women as Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way meets Timothy Snyder's On Tyranny. Self-knowledge isn't the end goal here; it's the foundation for knowing where you can make an impact. It cites women across movements and their advice on how to stay creative and build power in a time of mass destruction.  But isn't this focus on the self just new age nonsense which is a slippery slope to fascism, given reports of new age online movements being breeding grounds for fascist cult recruitment? This book follows an ancient tradition of taking on an empire with the power of ideas. Ideas cannot be killed. And you cannot stop an idea whose time has come.  Know thyself was popularized by the ancient Greeks, most famously by Socrates who was a champion of women for that time. The Greeks were conquered by the sadistic and corrupt Roman Empire. A couple hundred years later, the Greeks conquered them right back through the power of self-knowledge and ideas. Greek became the dominant language of the Roman Empire. Self-knowledge is not ego. The book walks you through steps to think creatively and conquer doubt in order to build meaningful collective action.  I had to produce my film Mr. Jones myself because no one wanted it. Mr. Jones was a film to bring historical justice and truth to a massive genocide by the Kremlin, covered up for generations, including with the help of Western corruption. A former Ambassador to Ukraine called Mr. Jones Ukraine's Schindler's List. A screening was shut down in Moscow, and Memorial, Russia's once largest NGO that dared to screen it, was liquidated. There were death threats and harassment during the making of the film, but still the team and I fought on, holding on to the power of our creativity and voices. That is what A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women is about: remembering the power of your voice in a world that wants to silence you and kill you. It's also a damn good time.  I hope you will consider checking it out and pre-ordering A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women, which helps build buzz in the industry and gets the word out. Thank you to everyone who has supported my work over the years. It means so much.

What if the skills forged in chaos aren't flaws to fix, but the strengths our brittle systems need? Art Wilson knows chaos intimately. He's lived through homelessness, addiction, and incarceration—and discovered something most leaders miss: excellence doesn't live in the safe center. It's born at the edge of chaos, where complexity scientists say we're most adaptive. Through raw, lived stories, Art reveals how chaos trains the skills most organizations and communities desperately need: rapid trust-building, instant threat assessment, and finding resources where others see nothing. He explores the “edge of chaos”, that fertile zone between order and disorder where innovation and resilience emerge. Wilson brings lived experience from both sides of this edge, from years of homelessness, addiction and incarceration to an MBA and leadership in nonprofits and business. Drawing on work in shelters, prisons and reentry programs, he offers a clear systems lens for staying adaptive without losing structure. He is a graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan.

[Part Two of Two] In Part Two, investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell break down exactly how Parker's attorneys weaponized a judge's old-fashioned notions of what a scared woman looks like — and why South Carolina's appointed judiciary has no reason to care what you think about it… Demand better! Attorneys for a billionaire gas station owner allegedly billed $310,000 (allegedly because the invoices are secret) — the cost of approximately two murder defenses — in secret billings – to punish a journalist for wanting to feel safe at her own deposition. A deposition that was attempted in March and happened in April. Judge R. Keith Kelly obliged them, ordering Mandy to pay $171,500 in attorneys fees and a $5,000 fine to coerce a deposition that already happened back in April.  We believe that Mandy's constitutional rights were violated and it makes us worry for all of us.  The contempt charge brought by attorneys who represented Alex Murdaugh's convicted co-conspirators and decided by the same judge who lets Gregg Roman continue to dodge his deposition… the lesson is clear: EVADE SERVICE at all costs and skate free. The result: Auto wants to fall in love and experience the sort of passion dramatized on television. Meanwhile, Walter and Auto end up working a case involving a dead aerospace CEO and his beautiful daughter. Will she spark with Auto and will he learn about this thing humans call "love"? And will it prove he can make the intuitive leap necessary for true artificial intelligence? Is Automan finally finding its footing? Erik considers the possibility while Justin maintains it's just Automan. Delta Burke makes a rare appearance, leading to another episode of Tread Perilously Loves Delta Burke. Fellow guest star Glenn Corbett looks unreal throughout. The Hutts end up part of the plot for some reason. The pair debate how to pronounce director Winrich Kolbe's name. Desi Arnaz Jr. finally becomes the sidekick -- the right place for his character in the series. Of course, Justin still tries to recast him. Paul opens this new section of his letter to the Romans with a revelation about himself so shocking he feels the need to assure them he is not lying or self-deceived. He says, "I am telling the truth in Christ," meaning he is conscious that Jesus will judge the truthfulness of what he is saying (Gal 1:20). Then he adds that both his human conscience and the Holy Spirit within him bear witness it's true. And what is this revelation about himself that needs such confirmation for us to believe it? It is that he lives in a constant state of grief over Judaism's widespread rejection of Christ. He says his compassion for his brethren is so strong it led him to do the unthinkable. There had been times when he tried to bargain with God on their behalf asking that whatever curse had fallen on Judaism be transferred to him so they would again be given mercy. If it could be done (which it can't), he would have willingly forfeited his own eternal life in order to save his "brothers," his "kinsmen according to the flesh." His literal words are, "For I was praying myself to be accursed (anathema) from Christ on behalf of my brothers...." Knowing how confident he was of eternal life (Ac 9:3-8; 2Co 12:1-4; Php 1:21-24), the thought that he would even consider such an exchange Is breathtaking. Few of us love even family members to this degree, let alone our persecutors. Fiona Stevenson: How Law Firms Can Win Clients in the First 2% of the Experience

BE THAT LAWYER

A potential client rarely picks up the phone to call a law firm on their best day—and how that first moment is handled can make or break the relationship. In this episode, you'll learn how to turn branding, digital footprint, and intake into a consistent, human experience that wins trust and converts more of the right clients.   In this episode, Steve Fretzin and Fiona Stevenson discuss: Unreasonable hospitality and the “2%” difference Brand vs. marketing for law firms Defining mission, values, and ideal clients Consistent intake and first-impression systems Human connection vs. AI in client intake   Key Takeaways: A law firm's brand is defined less by its logo and more by what people say when the lawyers aren't in the room. Clarity on mission, values, and the types of clients you do and do not want to serve should act as a north star for all marketing and client interactions. Consistency across every touchpoint (including your website, email, phone, live chat, and in-person conversations) is essential for building trust and a recognizable brand. The first phone call often happens on one of the worst days in a client's life, so warmth, empathy, and active listening are non‑negotiable in intake. While AI can enhance efficiency behind the scenes, real humans at the end of the phone line remain critical to delivering the kind of experience that truly reflects a firm's reputation.   "Brand is what people are saying about you when you're not in the room. You might not have even spoken to that person, and they've already got a perception about what your brand is." —  Fiona Stevenson   Check out my new show, Be That Lawyer Coaches Corner, and get the strategies I use with my clients to win more business and love your career again.   Join the Be That Lawyer Community and connect with ambitious lawyers who are serious about growing their book of business, strengthening their brand, and becoming confident, consistent rainmakers.   Ready to go from good to GOAT in your legal marketing game? Everyday Injustice

In Episode 333 of Everyday Injustice, host David Greenwald speaks with journalist and author Justine van der Leun about her new book, Unreasonable Women: Three Stories of Violence, Imprisonment and Extraordinary Survival. The conversation explores a troubling reality within the criminal legal system: how survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse are often criminalized rather than protected. Drawing on years of investigative reporting and extensive research, van der Leun examines the stories of women whose attempts to survive violence ultimately led to their incarceration. Van der Leun explains how her investigation began with the case of Nikki Addimando, a New York woman convicted after killing her abusive partner while claiming self-defense. The case prompted a larger question: How often are survivors punished for acts committed in the context of abuse? To find answers, van der Leun conducted a groundbreaking survey of approximately 10,000 incarcerated women, receiving more than 1,000 responses. Her findings suggest that a significant portion of women in prison are there because they acted to protect themselves or loved ones from violence, while many more carry extensive histories of abuse that went unaddressed by social institutions before they entered the criminal legal system. The episode highlights the stories of three women featured in the book: Tanisha Williams of Michigan, who became entangled in a murder case after being coerced by an abusive partner; Gemma Heffernan of Missouri, who fought back against a husband who subjected her to years of violence; and TC Brooks of California, who killed her abusive stepfather after enduring years of sexual abuse and witnessing ongoing violence against her mother. Through these stories, van der Leun argues that the legal system often struggles to recognize the realities of coercion, trauma, and survival, instead relying on rigid categories that separate victims from offenders. Throughout the discussion, Greenwald and van der Leun examine broader questions about accountability, systemic failure, and reform. Van der Leun contends that many of the women filling America's prisons were failed long before they entered the criminal legal system and that their cases reveal deep structural shortcomings in how society responds to abuse. The conversation offers a powerful look at the intersection of gender, violence, trauma, and incarceration, challenging listeners to reconsider who the justice system punishes—and why.

In this episode of the ZenRUN Podcast, I chat with the wonderful Peta Moore - wildlife lover, ultra runner, Perth Zoo vet nurse, trail adventurer, and fellow member of the 2026 Delirious West DNF crew. Peta's story starts in a small coal mining town in Central Queensland, where she definitely did not grow up thinking she was sporty. There was a bit of T-ball, some Highland dancing, a serious Muay Thai phase, and eventually a life built around animals, wildlife, conservation, and the odd capybara obsession. From wildlife biology to Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, bear rescue work in Vietnam, zookeeping in Alice Springs, and eventually Perth Zoo, Peta's life has been full of animals, adventure, and a very healthy amount of chaos. And then running arrived. What started as a Couch to 5K attempt on the trails around Alice Springs - complete with hills, heat, sunsets, and a dog by her side - slowly turned into trail running, ultra running, 100 milers, 200 milers, injury comebacks, big adventures, and a very deep love for the WA trail running community. We talk about Peta's first ultras, her love-hate relationship with backyard events, finishing her first 200 miler in the Blue Mountains, crying at aid stations, eating emergency Twisties for breakfast, getting through terrifying cliff sections with the help of “Spider Lady”, and the weird way ultra runners can suddenly find themselves saying things like, “There's only 80k to go!” Of course, we also talk about Delirious West 2026, where Peta went in with one of her best training blocks, a year of injury-free running behind her, and plenty of confidence - only to fall off a boardwalk just 3km into the race. From there, she managed pain, problem-solved, kept moving, questioned her sanity more than once, and eventually made the hard decision to stop at Treetop when the joy had gone and the risk felt too high. This conversation is honest, funny, emotional, and full of the real stuff that happens between start lines and finish lines - including the grief of a DNF, the fear of more injury, the pull of community, and the deep love that keeps bringing us back to the trails. Why You'll Love This Episode You'll hear about: Peta growing up in a tiny Central Queensland mining town Her path into wildlife biology, zoo medicine, and vet nursing Running in Alice Springs, Vietnam, Perth, Spain, the Blue Mountains and WA trails Her first trail events and how she got sucked into the ultra world Why the WA trail running community became her second family Her first 200 miler at Unreasonable in the Blue Mountains Sleep deprivation, aid station meltdowns, and emergency Twisties The injury rollercoaster: shoulder surgery, knee surgery, stress fractures and comebacks Her 2026 Delirious West 200 miler DNF Why stopping can sometimes be the strongest decision The strange grief that can come after a DNF Why running is still worth it, even when it breaks your heart a little Tips from Peta's Story 1. Community matters more than we realise. Peta talks beautifully about finding her people through trail running. When injury kept her from racing, she stayed connected by volunteering, crewing, cheering and showing up. 2. A DNF still contains a huge amount of courage. Peta's Delirious West didn't end the way she hoped, but she still pushed through a massive amount of pain, made smart decisions, and protected her future running. 3. Don't ignore pain just because you're tough. Ultra runners are excellent at tolerating discomfort - sometimes too excellent. Peta's story is a good reminder that pain is information, especially when there's a history of injury. 4. Cross-training can be a gift. During injury recovery, Peta discovered cycling and realised it made her stronger. Sometimes the thing we're forced into becomes part of the bigger picture. 5. Running will wait for you. One of the loveliest reminders from this episode is that if you need a break, running is still there. The trails are still there. The community is still there. 6. It's okay to grieve the race you didn't get to finish. A DNF can feel like losing the version of the story you'd been imagining. Peta speaks honestly about needing to process that. 7. Keep coming back - but come back wisely. Peta's story isn't about pretending everything is fine. It's about healing, rebuilding, adjusting, and still believing there are more adventures ahead. Working with Brian Greene, she's exploring whether the shape of hidden dimensions, specifically a Klein bottle, could explain why matter won the war against antimatter after the Big Bang — no fudged parameters required. The geometry does the work. The universe's lopsidedness isn't a mystery to be plugged in; it's a consequence of the space we're sewn into. In September 2023, Will Guidara told us the story of how he used two words to turn a middling brasserie into the best restaurant in the world. Those two words? Unreasonable hospitality. We're running that episode again today because, well, it's one of our all-time favorites. And because Will is coming back on the show on Monday to discuss his brand-new book, Unreasonable Hospitality: The Field Guide. Consider this the appetizer.
