Over the past few years, I've become increasingly frustrated at just how HARD it is for founders to find the right people for their business. There are fewer applicants than there used to be for roles in sales and marketing in CPG businessesIt's even tougher to find that magic mix of mindset, experience and soft skills— as well as someone who genuinely fits your culture and values. And the process? It's a lot: search, connect, schedule, first interviews, follow-ups, feedback loops — all while juggling a scaling business — and you STILL might not end up with the right person. It struck me that so many of the incredible guests on Brand Growth Heroes have shared absolute gold when it comes to building teams — how they hire, how they lead, and what they've learned when it all goes wrong. So the brilliant crew at MKJ Ignite - Billy, Paul and Immy, have gone through the Brand Growth Heroes archives and handpicked some snippets from the founders of your favourite challenger brands (think Olipop, Child's Farm, Perfect Ted and Tony's Chocolonely), pulling out the best people insights. And as a result....BGH SHORTS: The People Series was born!Short 5 min episodes. Golden nuggets. Actionable insights Every 2 weeks, we'll drop a new 5-minute clip - so don't forget to HIT FOLLOW!Because your business is only as strong as your team.It really shouldn't be this hard — but it is.So let's make it a little easier!

Scripture: John 12:1-8 Jesus Anointed at Bethany 12 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. 3 Then Mary took about a pint[a] of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, 5 “Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages.[b]” 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it. 7 “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. 8 You will always have the poor among you,[c] but you will not always have me.”

Alan Briggs sits down with Scott Cutlan—business leader, mountaineer, and author of Unreasonable: Seven Impactful Lessons Discovered Climbing the Seven Summits. Scott shares his journey from corporate executive to scaling the highest peaks in the world, and the deep leadership insights he uncovered along the way. They explore purpose, alignment, resilience, and the importance of saying "no" to stay focused on what truly matters. 1. The Call to Adventure Scott was led by faith to leave his high-powered corporate job, climb the Seven Summits, start a nonprofit, and self-fund it—all without any prior mountaineering experience. The initial challenge of stepping into the unknown and trusting the process. 2. Leadership & Mountain Analogies Scott describes himself as a “mountain guide for the leadership journey,” drawing parallels between climbing and business leadership. Alignment is key—leaders must be clear on their purpose to make the right decisions. 3. The “More” Concept Many people misunderstand "more" as adding complexity. Instead, Scott defines "more" as expansion that comes through alignment with purpose. Purpose = The best of what you have for others. Fulfillment = The result of choosing to live in that purpose. 4. Saying No to Say Yes Leaders face decision fatigue—executives make an estimated 40,000 decisions daily. Scott is shifting from 30+ speaking engagements a year to only six highly intentional ones. “The power of yes is in alignment, not just saying yes.” 5. Resilience & The Why That Keeps You Moving Scott's harrowing Everest solo climb: Facing brutal conditions on the North side, alone, at extreme altitude. The moment of exhaustion when he almost sat down—knowing that sitting meant death. The significance of the colored band on his wrist, representing his “why.” 6. Isolation vs. Community Isolation is one of the greatest threats to leaders. The importance of linking arms with others for accountability, support, and shared growth. 7. The 3 Types of Responses You'll Get When Pursuing Your Purpose Eye Rolls: Dismissive people who don't understand. Blank Stares: Those who aren't ready to process it. Tell Me Mores: The people who are curious, hungry, and ready to engage—Scott's focus. 8. Business, Money, and Alignment Money can be a distraction or a tool—it must be aligned with purpose. Scott shares how he self-funded his mission, trusting that provision would come. 9. The Most Important Pillar from His Book Right Now: Death Not physical death, but dying to oneself daily. Taking time to pause, realign, and ensure decisions reflect core values, not external pressures. Unreasonable Church: Cheerful GenerosityIn business, the saying goes that you have to spend money to make money. Paul worded it a little differently but had the same idea when he said that if a farmer only plants a few seeds, they'll only get a small crop. Unreasonable Church: Irrefutable BelongingSometimes, church can feel like a place where only “good” people belong. That's not at all the way God wants people to see His church. You have irrefutable belonging in God's family. Revz is coming to terms with the enormity of house maintenance and we're not in an apartment any more, toto! Who knew leaf debris and council clean-ups would end up on our topic list; very annoying, very middle age. Then Gem doesn't have time for her never-ending story, aka the saga of Iggy's sleep.
