‘La Mer' (French for ‘The Sea') is one of the most evocative pieces ever composed. The composer Claude Debussy conjures up images and sensations of the sea, creating some of the most beautiful sounds an orchestra can produce. In this episode I share insights into this piece, I continue to explore the question ‘What Is Music?' and we discover the instruments of the Percussion Section. In 2017, Basin Street Records celebrated it’s 20 Year Anniversary as an Independent Record Label. The label features the wonderful sounds of New Orleans with artists such as Kermit Ruffins, Irvin Mayfield, Rebirth Brass Band, Jon Cleary, Los Hombres Calientes, Jeremy Davenport, Bonerama, and so many more. Founder and Owner, Mark Samuels, started the label in 1997 with the release of Kermit Ruffins - the Barbecue Swingers Live, which was recorded at the history music venue, Tipitina’s. The labels second album, Los Hombres Calientes won a Latin Billboard Award, and the 2012 Rebirth Brass Band album “Rebirth of New Orleans,” brought the label it’s first Grammy win. The only thing that may be more pervasive than talk of Russia today is music. Music is everywhere. It seems no space, public or private, is not in some way filled with music. Even sporting events are now enveloped in music.   In spite of music having been at the cutting edge of technological creative destruction and in spite of the fact that its business models no longer works, it is still omnipresent. One of the few things that has been with us through the ages and is as strong if not stronger today. So why is music so much a part our lives and what is the seemingly magical power it has for so many people. We all love music, but most of us run in the other direction when anyone mentions music theory; the actual nuts and bolts of it are enough to make most people’s head explode. Until now that is. Author John Powell remedies the situation with his new book “How Music Works: The Science and Psychology of Beautiful Sounds, from Beethoven to the Beatles and Beyond.” Powell does the impossible: he explains the science behind music in terms that anyone can understand. Plus, he interjects enough humor to turn this into a real page-turner. Icon Fetch talks to the author, who is also a physicist, about what distinguishes music from noise, what makes an “A” note, and why ten violins playing together is only about twice as loud as a single violin.

  I started this mix in 2007, finished it in 2008, and am now finally seeing it come to fruition in 2010. I actually intended for this mix to be a CD release, but ultimately decided that making it freely downloadable would be the best approach.The title "Beautiful Sounds" is pretty self explanatory. Basically, I wanted to take all things that sound beautiful, blend these things together, package it, then share it with all of you. When I think of the phrase "Beautiful Sounds", I hear congas, horns, bass lines, jazz chords, latin rhythms, and sultry voices singing in languages I can't understand. If someone asked me what genres "Beautiful Sounds" would be comprised of, I'd mention jazz, afrobeat, bossanova, samba, salsa, soul, funk, and anything else you don't hear on your local radio station.I'm quite satisfied with the way that this turned out, despite all the nit-picking I could still do with it. In retrospect, I never thought that my 10+ years of deejaying would amount to me putting out a mix such as this one. Early on in my DJ career, I always thought I would remain a hip-hop battle DJ practicing to be the next Q-bert (just like everyone else in the 90's).
