Book Vs. Movie: WickedThe 2004 Musical Vs. the 2024 Movie"Musicals in March"The "Wicked" movie is based on Gregory Maguire's novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West; the book (for the play) was written by Winnie Holzman, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. Mike Switzer interviews John Powell, president and CEO of the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition coming Feb. 14th through 16th to Charleston, S.C.
Samantha Ege is both a leading scholar and interpreter of Florence Price. In this interview, she talks about her recent book “South Side Impresarios: How Race Women Transformed Chicago's Classical Music Scene”. I was fascinated to learn about this compelling history of Chicago's Black Renaissance with women such as Nora Holt, Margaret Bonds, and Katherine Dunham. Dr. Ege shared how the scholarship side of her work informs both her identity as a pianist and also how this research and storytelling cause her to reflect on some of her own challenges. We also talked about some of her other recent recording projects, including the upcoming Avril Coleridge-Taylor piano concerto and chamber music with Castle of our Skins, and she reflected candidly on her personal creative life as a writer, performer and composer. De score voor Wicked, de verfilming van de musical met dezelfde titel van Stephen Schwarz en Winnie Holzman, werd gemaakt door Stephen Schwartz en John Powell. Powell kennen we ook van How to Train Your Dragon, The Bourne Identity, Happy Feet, en Solo: A Star Wars Story.
That's right settlers, it's time to try defying gravity on this one as the bros take a trip to discuss one of their favorite musicals, and the unique twists John Powell added for its adaptation to the silver screen.
Joe, Kyle, and Rick review the film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, Wicked, which is currently in theaters. Directed by Jon M. Chu, and written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, with music by John Powell and Stephen Schwartz. The film stars Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum. We ranked 11 of the songs from the soundtrack, as well as picked our favorite lines, characters, performers, and scenes. Enjoy!
The Coming Crash. The people and by the people, Americans are going to take the fall when the crash arrives. The American people have been lied to and deceived by the politicians. They said every thing was all right but it wasn't. When the Russian Federation and the European Union sign a treaty for trade and military peace, America's military industrial corporations on Wall Street will take a dive. You see, making a profit by war will have stopped. MUSIC Brian Easdale, Moscow Symphony Orchestra, Carl Orff, David Raksin, John Powell, Roy Webb
Academy Award® and Grammy Award®-winning songwriter Stephen Schwartz, Tony Award®-winning musical director Stephen Oremus, and Oscar-nominated composer John Powell join guest host Jon Burlingame for an in-depth discussion about bringing the iconic Broadway musical “Wicked” to the big screen. Together they discuss how they collaborated with director Jon M. Chu to adapt the beloved musical into a cinematic experience, the challenges of blending live and pre-recorded vocal performances, and the ways in which they expanded the orchestral arrangements to match the scale of this massive Hollywood movie musical.“We had spent so much time — and by ‘we' I mean myself and [writer] Winnie Holtzman — when we were writing the screenplay, which of course includes the songs [and] going through everything very meticulously with [director] John Chu, that basically he came in knowing how he was going to shoot it… But then, of course, once you're actually there and working with bodies and working within the environment, things will change… This was an extremely collaborative process all along the way. It wasn't as if we did some music work, then went away, and came back and were surprised by what was done with it… Nobody sort of went off and did his thing by himself.”—Stephen Schwartz, Executive Producer, Music and Lyrics, “Wicked” Be sure to check out “Wicked,” now in theaters in Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos®.Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Creator Lab and check out Dolby.com. In this heartfelt episode of Journey to Authentic Joy, we delve into a profound and sometimes challenging topic: What Love Is. Together, we'll explore what love means, what it isn't, and the powerful concept of unconditional love. Drawing inspiration from John Powell's belief that true love must be unconditional, we'll discuss the conditions we often place on love and the transformative strength that comes from loving without limits. Reflect on your own definitions of love: do you love yourself and others without condition? Join me in this essential conversation as we seek to align with the greatest commandment—love. Don't forget to like and share with those who might find this message meaningful. Let's grow in love, together!
Hey everyone, Jon M. Chu's Wicked - actually titled Wicked: Part I in the movie - has now hit theaters. To let you know right upfront, I'm not necessarily the biggest musical guy and witchcraft fantasy stuff has never been a genre of film & TV that I've ever been interested in. Plus, I have never seen the broadway play so have virtually no connection to the source material. To add fuel to the fire, I also thought the trailers were pretty bad... which is why I was bamboozled when the first reviews came out absolutely praising this movie to high heavens. I have now seen the film. Is it overhyped or legitimately Best Picture worthy? Find out in this review! Wicked: Directed by: Jon M. Chu Screenplay by: Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox Musical Book by: Winnie Holzman From the novel by: Gregory Maguire Produced by: David Stone, Marc Platt Executive Producers: Dana Fox, Winnie Holzman, Jared LeBoff, David Nicksay, Stephen Schwartz Music by: John Powell, Stephen Schwartz Cinematography by: Alice Brooks Editing by: Myron Kerstein Casting by: Tiffany Little Canfield, Bernard Telsey Production Design by: Nathan Crowley Costume Design by: Paul Tazewell Cast: Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum Synopsis: Elphaba, an ostracized but defiant girl born with green skin, and Glinda, a privileged aristocrat born popular, become extremely unlikely friends in the magical Land of Oz. As the two girls struggle with their opposing personalities, their friendship is tested as both begin to fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and The Wicked Witch of the West.

Chances are, if you're thinking of listening to this podcast episode, the 2024 election didn't go the way you hoped it would. A lot of people are feeling scared right now. I've heard some people wanting to fight, while others want to hunker down. I've had both of those feelings myself over the last few weeks. I don't usually wade into current events. My brain needs time to process and digest and preferably take in a lot of peer-reviewed research before I can decide what I think. I tried to do something different in this episode: I did read a lot, but I only took notes and then spoke mostly extemporaneously. And now you've seen the length of this episode you'll know why I don't do that very often. In this episode we will help you answer questions like: How do our values shape political views and actions? How can we make sense of the way that liberals and conservatives prioritize different values? Is it possible that liberals haven't been truly honest about how we live our values? What kinds of actions can we take to create true belonging so we don't have to grasp at power? How can we create true belonging in our families, to live our values honestly and completely? I hope you find this thought-provoking and useful as we all start to think about the ways we can move forward - and keep everyone safe. This episode of Scandal Water contains adult themes and descriptions of violence. Listener discretion is advised. In March of 1987, an experienced coroner began a routine autopsy on 44-year-old John Powell, who'd spent months in Drake Memorial Hospital after being critically injured in a motorcycle accident. But when the coroner detected a subtle smell similar to that of burnt almonds, he suddenly realized Mr. Powell had not died of injuries related to the accident… he'd been murdered with cyanide. This discovery was only the first step in a chain of events that ultimately led to the capture of Donald Harvey, a serial killer who operated in three different hospitals in Kentucky and Ohio between 1970-1987. Dubbed the Angel of Death, Harvey was ultimately convicted of killing 37 people, although his actual murder count is believed to be higher. In this episode we discuss the events that transpired– and the people who risked their jobs–in order to end the Angel of Death's horrific murder spree. My guest this week is engineer Alan Meyerson, who many believe is the top scoring mixer in film today. With more than 200 credits, Alan has worked with leading film score composers like James Newton Howard, John Powell, Harry Gregson-Williams, and Danny Elfman, and has a particularly long-standing working relationship with the great Hans Zimmer that continues to this day. Alan's credits as a scoring mixer include blockbuster movies like Man of Steel, Iron Man, the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Inception, The Dark Knight, Kung-Fu Panda 1 & 2, Despicable Me 1 & 2, The Last Samurai, Gladiator, and Hannibal. In addition to this, he also has a number of music mixing credits that include Bryan Ferry, New Order, Etta James, and OMD. During our interview, Alan told me about being a part of the first wave of dance music, making the transition to film work, his approach to orchestral recording, why he isn't into vintage microphones, how he tailors his reverbs, dealing with 750 tracks of orchestra, his adventures at Abbey Road, and much more. I spoke with Alan from his studio in Los Angeles. On the intro I looked at the possible TikTok ban in the United States, and the Caesar's Palace console finds a new home with UA.

So how do we have conversations where we share what we really think and feel without criticizing others? This podcast discusses ways to address this topic in relationship with others, beginning with the relationship with yourself. In order to have the healthy and positive relationships that most of us want, taking time to build our communication skills can be a worthwhile endeavor. Some examples of how to handle specific situations are shared. Journaling prompts are suggested to further your exploration. "Migration" is the latest animated film from Illumination, the animation studio responsible for the "Despicable Me" films, "Sing," "The Secret Life Of Pets," and most recently, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie." Director Benjamin Renner was tasked with bringing his experience working in traditionally hand-drawn animated films to deliver something different for the studio. Teaming with "The White Lotus" writer Mike White and composer John Powell, they've all given us an animated film that feels both unique and familiar at the same time. Renner and Powell were kind enough to spend a few minutes speaking with us about their work on the film, which you can listen to below. Be sure to check out the film, now playing in theaters from Universal Pictures, which is up for your consideration at the 96th Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature. Thank you, and enjoy! Geoff Zanelli makes his long-awaited Score debut after one of Netflix's most watched animated films of all-time, the Adam Sandler-produced LEO. In this episode, Kenny and Robert discuss the long-awaited arrival of MAESTRO, the Leonard Bernstein biopic, which we discussed on the 2nd episode of SCORE: THE PODCAST back when it was to be directed by Spielberg. Then, Robert and Geoff reminisce about drinking absinthe in Paris, before jumping into the challenge of making Adam Sandler laugh, and the paradox of writing “funny” music in animation. Plus, Geoff talks about his path from music school to being an intern at Hans Zimmer's Remote Control Productions in the early (Lion King era) 1990s, sitting in on Alan Meyerson mixes, and getting his first opportunities while working for John Powell on the movie Face/Off.
This time Jon and Andy train their attention on John Powell's score for the 2010 animated fantasy adventure How to Train Your Dragon. Just how many themes does this score have? Might their meanings change with repeat viewings? And, what rhythmic pattern will Jon finally let Andy talk about?
Have you ever been disappointed with God? Are you disappointed with God right now? Chances are our disappointment with God comes from our plans being changed because of his plans. We look at the life of Mary and Joseph and how God changed their plans to bring the Savior into the world to save us from our sin. And through all the changes in their plans, they chose to worship through and trust. Their disappointment was actually a divine appointment with God and your's can be, too!Group Questions:1. Have you ever been disappointed with God? Have you ever been made to feel guilty for feeling such a way toward God?2. Read Proverbs 16:9 & Proverbs 19:21. When was a time God changed your plans? How did it work out?3. Mary and Joseph were both troubled by the role they would play in God's story for humanity. (Mary - Luke 1:29) (Joseph - Matthew 1:19). Was ultimately their response and talk candidly about their process to arrive there.4. LEADER - select a worship song to play before you wrap-up your discussion time. Use that time of listening and worshiping to trust God's plan for whatever is on your heart.5. John Powell wrote: "I have a sign in the mirror of my room I see everyone morning in my groggy condition, when I first wake up: WHAT HAVE YOU GOT GOING TODAY, GOD? I'D LIKE TO BE PART OF IT. THANKS FOR CHOOSING ME!" Let this be your prayer in the days ahead.

FROM STEVE: Until we answer life's deepest questions, we will remain stuck— unable to live with freedom and vitality. This podcast is one where Gwen and I explore three core questions. Remember this: we can never hear this message too much because living with soul and by soul is counter cultural and for many, counter intuitive! SHOW NOTES In this episode we join Steve and Gwen for two sessions of their Soul Care 101 course recorded at the retreat center known as Potter's Inn at Aspen Ridge. Enjoy this fireside conversation with pops and crackles from the fireplace, as they examine the three core questions of every soul. In the first session they talk about: Question 1 - Am I Loved? Every person everywhere wants to know if they are loved. Some (or all) of us may have love wounds where we either didn't get the love we needed or we looked for love in all the wrong places. Learn what it means to be beloved and how to rest in the truth of God's love for us. Question 2 - Am I Safe? What fears do we carry with us that shape us? How do these fears affect our image of God? If we don't feel safe how does that affect how we relate to others? Also it's good to ask, am I a safe person? Do I listen to others or am I quick to judge? Question 3 - Do I Belong? It is evident from an early age that we all want to belong to a group, a community. Where are we finding our safe community? Is it the right place? Are we able to be our true selves there or do we feel that we have to act or look a certain way? Do we change our behavior depending on where we are or who we are with? On this episode of Momentum: A Race Forward Podcast, Julie Nelson, Senior Vice President of Programs at Race Forward and john a. powell, Director, Othering and Belonging Institute, come together in a conversation inspired by the recent essay they co-authored, “Advancing Just, Multiracial Democracy.” Throughout the conversation, they explore the role local municipalities can play in not only defending against “democratic backsliding,” but also in expanding the very nature of democracy, which is critical with the global rise of authoritarianism and nationalism. Julie and john's work rests on the idea that local governments are uniquely situated to turn grim situations built on “othering” into a global movement grounded in racial justice and belonging. They examine the four principles they wrote about, which includes: 1. expanding democratic practice; 2. being explicit about who is currently included or excluded; 3. systems and structures; and 4. operationalizing and organizing for multiracial democracy. This week we are rebroadcasting our interview with john a. powell, originally aired in May 2019. If you enjoy this week's episode, make sure you listen to the first episode in our special series The Edges in the Middle, which features a conversation between john a. powell and Báyò Akómoláfé .Now more than ever, we are reminded of the vital importance of creating practices that strengthen and recognize our shared humanity. However, in order to do so, we must examine the systems, ideologies, and actions that have emboldened us to deny humanity in the first place. At the beginning of this week's episode, john a. powell defines any practice which denies someone's humanity as an act of “othering.” Both at home and abroad it seems we are witnessing a surge of "othering," whether it is reflected in election cycles, the rise of ethnonationalism, or the pervasiveness of violent acts. We must wonder, how and why do societies rely on the process of othering? And more importantly, how do we move into engagement, organizing, and “bridging?”john a. powell (who spells his name in lowercase in the belief that we should be "part of the universe, not over it, as capitals signify") is an internationally recognized expert in the areas of civil rights, civil liberties, structural racism, housing, poverty, and democracy. Amanda Ripley began her life as a journalist covering crime, disaster, and terrorism. Then in 2018, she published a brilliant essay called “Complicating the Narratives,” which she opened by confessing a professional existential crisis. We journalists, she wrote, “can summon outrage in five words or less. We value the ancient power of storytelling, and we get that good stories require conflict, characters and scene. But in the present era of tribalism, it feels like we've reached our collective limitations … Again and again, we have escalated the conflict and snuffed the complexity out of the conversation."Yet what Amanda has gone on to investigate — and so, so helpfully illuminate — is not just about journalism, or about politics. It touches almost every aspect of human life in almost every society around the world right now. We think we're divided by issues, arguing about conflicting facts. But at a deeper level, she says, we are trapped in a pattern of distress known as “high conflict” — where the conflict itself has become the point, and it sweeps everything into its vortex. So how to get out? What Amanda has been gathering by way of answers to that question is an extraordinary gift to us all.Amanda Ripley is an investigative journalist who sometimes describes herself as a "recovering journalist" — and a trained conflict mediator. She's written several acclaimed books, including High Conflict: Why We Get Trapped and How We Get Out. You can find her essay “Complicating the Narratives” on the Solutions Journalism blog. She is the co-founder of the company Good Conflict and hosts the Slate podcast How To!.
