New Orleans has given the world all kinds of music. We refer to ourselves as the birthplace of jazz. We’re one of the principal breeding grounds of funk, bounce, and brass band music. And then there’s a style of piano playing that’s so identifiably from here it’s simply called, “New Orleans piano.” Generations of legendary New Orleans piano players became identified with the places they played. Fats Domino at the Dew Drop Inn. Professor Longhair at Tipitina’s. James Booker at The Maple Leaf. Today you can hear masters of New Orleans piano like Jon Cleary, Tom McDermott, Joe Krown, and others at clubs around town, like Chickie Wah Wah, The Bon Temps, and Buffa’s. Or, you can hear them at your place. You can have an A-list New Orleans piano player show up at your place - with a grand piano - and play your birthday party, wedding, or just a random Friday night, thanks to Jacques Ferland’s business, Piano On A Truck. Piano On A Truck is pretty much what it sounds like. It’s a grand piano on the back of a yellow, 1972 International pick-up truck. And it comes with, or without, a piano player. In our seemingly never-ending attempt to place order on a chaotic world, we like to categorize things into twos - either/or. Tall or short. Black or white. On the rocks or straight up. Today, for a lot of white-collar occupations, the either/or distinction is either working in the office or working from home. Well, like so many things in life, it turns out there’s a 3rd way. Billy Schell describes himself as CEO, owner and van driver of an apparel company called NOLA Shirts. NOLA Shirts designs and manufactures New Orleans themed Polo shirts, T-shirts, and hats, and sells them online or at various brick-and-mortar stores around New Orleans. The “van driver” in Billy’s job description is a reference to the company’s headquarters which are also Billy’s living quarters – a Mercedes Sprinter van that’s been his principal home and office since 2021. Around 5,525 years ago - it was probably a Thursday - in ancient Mesopotamia, the wheel was invented. To say it was a revolutionary invention is not just a bad pun, it’s also the understatement of several millennia. And just when you think every possible use of the wheel has already been thought of, along comes the 21st Century - and hashtag-van-life and Piano On A Truck, two New Orleans entrepreneurs discovering yet more places the revolutions of a wheel can take us. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. On the five-year anniversary of 25-year-old Josiah Hilderbrand's disappearance, Laura interviews his warrior mom Liz Hilderbrand. Josiah disappeared whilst en-route to a concert at the Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington State on June 7, 2019. Liz explains when she first realised her son, Josiah, was missing and what happened next. A total of seven people were killed in what would become the fourth largest mass murder in the USA in 2019. You wouldn't know about any of this because there was barely any media focus on the case or on Josiah and the driver of the car, Jon Cleary. That's why this is such an important story to tell. Lots of sights and sounds at New Orleans Jazz Fest. ----- My wife, a college friend and I stood amidst the peace and quiet of Jazz Fest in New Orleans last weekend along with what must have been 100,000 of our closest friends. It was a sight. When my wife and I told our friends we were going, they reacted the same was as when I told them we were going to Mexico for spring break – “Oh no,” they said. “That's dangerous over there. You're going to get shot.” During my thirty-six hours in New Orleans, I never once felt unsafe. To the great disappointment of my schadenfreude friends, we returned to Mobile unscathed. Which has led me to the conclusion that many of my friends are ninnies and are best left at home. I'm hoping heaven is a lot like the Gospel Stage at Jazz Fest. A cool breeze blew through the tented area. People were happy to slide a chair or two over to make room us. Most importantly, there were chairs. And, wow, the music. Argue if you want, but there's more energy coming from the Gospel Stage than any other Jazz Fest stage. When you're singing about the glory of the Lord, energy comes naturally. And when this middle aged, overweight, thinning haired white guy rose to his feet waiving his palms in the air to show that the spirit was moving…well, I couldn't believe myself. It was very out of character. But I felt it. And I loved it. One thing I don't love are large sweaty shirtless men. Or even small sweaty shirtless men. And there were a lot of them at Jazz Fest. They were everywhere. We left the Gospel Tent to wander the exhibits and try the food…and they were everywhere. One of the hardest movie scenes to watch ever is the scene from Along Came Polly when Ben Stiller's character plays basketball and, well, rubs up against a big sweaty guy. If you know what I'm talking about, you know. That was my fear. Shirts should be required when you're standing in crowded areas waiting for the acts to start. And when the music starts, the shirtless men more than others, become quite the charismatic dancers. I minded my own business, but I kept them in my periphery hoping I wouldn't have one of those Ben Stiller moments and have to wash my entire body in molten lava or, more likely, decide my life was simply no longer worth it. After watching Jon Cleary play some fantastic funk music, we turned to leave and hordes of people were filing in to see Kenny Loggins finish out the day on that same stage. You gotta respect Kenny Loggins but, for me, his music isn't good enough to risk proximity to gobs of sweaty, shirtless, charismatic dancing men. Not my scene. But in they marched, packing the area, eager for Kenny Loggins. They were excited to get Footloose as they headed into the shirtless Danger Zone. Don't Fight It. This is It. And as for me not seeing Kenny's show, I'm Alright. I'm Cam Marston and I'm just trying to Keep it Real.

CARY MORIN has been described as "one of the best acoustic pickers on the scene today.” With deft fingerstyle guitar and vocals that alternately convey melodic elation and gritty world-weariness, Morin crafts an inimitable style often characterized as roots-infused Native Americana with hints of bluegrass, folk, blues, and rock. He has performed at renowned venues across the globe, including the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center, and is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades. LILLI LEWIS is a classically trained, award-winning singer/songwriter from New Orleans. Lewis is said to have "Sister Rosetta Tharpe's virtuoso commitment to her instrument and Odetta's vocal power, creating a show that is a force of nature.” Opening for Alana Davis, Dr. John, Kirk Joseph, Kermit Ruffins, Henry Butler and Jon Cleary to name a few, the social justice themes and human rights messages that filter into her lyrics, as well as her gospel-tinged vocals and instrumentation are a direct result from her upbringing spent listening to her father's sermons and southern choirs while learning the northern sensibilities of her civil rights activist mother. WoodSongs Kid: Ameera De Mel just turned 13 and has a powerful voice. She is from Lexington, Kentucky.
The Grammy-winning pianist, vocalist, and songwriter has worked with top acts like Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Dr. John, and Eric Burdon. His solo records with the Absolute Monster Gentlemen are widely acclaimed as some of the finest examples of modern New Orleans funk and R’n’B. He’s played Royal Albert Hall and San Quentin State Prison. Now Jon finds the sweet spot between the two on the Troubled Men Podcast. Topics include storm repairs, roof leaks, a thumbs up, election season, a fundraiser, Manny for Mayor, a textbook nightmare, accents, slang, an English childhood, an exotic aunt, family musicians, a punk adolescence, hearing Professor Longhair, moving to New Orleans, a Maple Leaf job offer, red beans and rice, a James Booker seizure, early bands, Johnny Adams, a piano vacuum, Mighty Sam McClain, Guitar Slim Jr., mask aversion, the Quarantini Happy Hour, Charlie Gabriel, piano lessons, live dates, Thursdays, travel, Frostop, and much more. She played the 2019 Mammoth Blues Festival as the only solo female act that included headliners Buddy Guy, Trombone Shorty, Charlie Musselwhite, and more. We will get to know her stories, and hear some of her great music from her album “The Well” like, “Chamomile and Cocaine” and “The Gospel of Good Intentions” on this episode of the dHarmic Evolution with Katie Knipp! More about Katie Knipp Listen and support Katie and her music. We listened to some of her tracks and she shared a lot of great stories, but there's definitely more to hear from her, so don't forget to check out all the links provided below! Quotes: 13:13 I always, always write the song first, to the point where I can perform it as a solo act. If those things can't happen, the song isn't ready. I'm not just all about the studio stuff. The saxophone and all the great musicians that I add to it are just icing on the cake, but I feel like it's so important to make sure that the song stands on its own. 17:56 I felt very depressed. I was like, pray, and the words just came. He said, in my mind, it just came to me. He said, “Do you see how much you love it now? Do you see that music is love? Just like my love for you is never-ending. You can trust that your music is love and is never-ending and will never leave you or go away.” 36:23 There have always been some stories, I've had some experiences that forced me into, “Why to write a song in the first place?” And I feel blessed by those experiences, even if they were hard at the time. 37:58 I think about that a lot of the time. Because, I'm like, “I don't care what you think. I'm old. I'm here. I'm doing this. If you don't like it, move aside, because these people do. It's totally fine.” 39:03 When you think about a voice, it's like a thumbprint. First of all, it's unique to everybody. If you don't like somebody's voice, that's perfectly fine. To me, it's like wine or food. You have a specific palate for what you like to hear from somebody's mouth. I completely get that I'm not for everybody. So that's a huge thing that transformed my “balls out”, way of going about singing. It's like, “Oh, I don't care anymore.” Timestamps: 00:20 Introducing Katie Knipp 03:12 What was Katie's defining moment when she finally found her voice and style. 05:57 Katie shares what came in first in terms of playing instruments. 08:50 Listen to “Chamomile and Cocaine” by Katie Knipp 12:34 Katie takes us into the studio to the experience of “Chamomile and Cocaine” 15:07 How long has Katie worked with the musicians in her band? 16:56 As a mother of two little ones and with her career choice, how is Katie working things out? 20:55 What are the writing habits and process's of Katie Knipp 23:43 Listen to “The Gospel of Good Intentions” by Katie Knipp 29:28 Is there a certain group of people that “The Gospel of Good Intentions” is intended for? 31:15 Katie takes us to her experience while recording the track “The Gospel of Good Intentions” 34:46 When did Katie come into total honesty with her music? 40:07 Katie shares funny and unusual experiences during a gig. 43:19 What is a chill time like for Katie outside of music? 45:54 How are Katie's boys experiencing music now. 47:32 Get to hear Katie's advice for young and upcoming musicians, artists, singer-songwriters. 49:53 Listen to “Ride On” by James Kevin O'Connor Spotify Playlist: Check out the Spotify playlist that features the dHarmic Evolution alumni artists. Episode 043 welcomes DC-born, NOLA-based NIGEL HALL (Lettuce, Jon Cleary, ex-The Nth Power) to the show for an hour-plus Vulcan Mind Probe. Nige has been a friend for about a dozen years, and I've written extensively about his musical exploits, so this convergence was a very long time in the making. The extremely gifted, Grammy-nominated keyboardist/vocalist - singer/songwriter keeps a lot of artistic irons in the fire. Nigel's dropping sophomore solo LP Spiritual on May 14, 2021, a stunning sojourn into Soulquarian waters co-produced by DJ Harrison and backed by members of Butcher Brown. @9mins- Introducing NIGEL HALL / @16mins-"Wake Me" Nigel Hall / @20mins - Interview In a wide-ranging convo, topics include: what's the latest in New Orleans , we get the 411 on Nigel's musical partnership with NOLA-based Jon Cleary & the Absolute Monster Gentlemen. His motivations and inspirations behind the forthcoming Spiritual, as Nigel reveals a bit about his process and the project's native tongues. We unpack his role over the years with Lettuce, and how the keyboard chair and his contributions to the band have evolved over time. Quick detours to George Duke & J Dilla, with a funny Suwannee flashback or two to boot. Naturally, we had to get into his time in The Nth Power, and he offers poignant, impassioned reflections that gave me chills. So did his defiant, righteous anger as a Black father to a pair of sons entering young adulthood. So many rabbit holes, with many stones left unturned. Super proud of this powerful powwow with one of the greatest to ever do it; a spiritual awakening of the soulful variety. Ladies & Gentlemen, Nigel Hall! From 1968 to 1973, the public television variety show SOUL!, guided by the enigmatic producer and host Ellis Haizlip, offered an unfiltered, uncompromising celebration of Black literature, poetry, music, and politics—voices that had few other options for national exposure, and, as a result, found the program an improbable place to call home. The series was among the first to provide expanded images of African Americans on television, shifting the gaze from inner-city poverty and violence to the vibrancy of the Black Arts Movement. With participants' recollections and illuminating archival clips, Mr. SOUL! captures a critical moment in culture whose impact continues to resonate, and an unsung hero whose voice we need now more than ever to restore the SOUL of a nation. Sidecar Racers (1975). Written by Jon Cleary, directed by Earl Bellamy. Starring John Clayton, Ben Murphy, Wendy Hughes, John Meillon, Peter Gwynne and Peter Graves. Two men who don't like each other share a dream. Well, they don't really share it. One's kind of along for the ride. Which make sense, because they're a pair of sidecar racers. They're also rivals for the love of a largely indifferent woman. The Podsploiteers, never the sportiest of folks, juggle the racing and the relationships, and Callum reviews Days of Thunder. Stir Crazy With Steve Jenkins: Conversations With Creatives During The Quarantine
My guest this week is Nigel Hall-an amazing singer/keyboard player/multi-instrumentalist.Born and raised in Washington D.C. and currently residing in New Orleans, LA. Lettuce's keyboardist/vocalist Nigel Hall is an accomplished musician steeped in Gospel tradition, as well as classic soul, funk, hip hop and R&B. Hall was discovered by Lettuce co-founder Ryan Zoidis around 2007, who invited him to Brooklyn to meet Eric Krasno and record with jazz band Soulive. Nigel was a huge fan of Soulive and this was a major moment for his young career. At that same time Hall connected with Lettuce drummer Adam Deitch and The Roots drummer/founder Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, and soon began appearing onstage with Soulive, Lettuce, and Royal Family affiliates. Nigel Hall was first nominated for a Grammy for his work on Ledesi's 2009 LP Turn Me Loose. In 2011, Hall decamped to New Orleans to immerse himself in the Crescent City's musical heritage. It was in NOLA where Hall was drafted by Jon Cleary for his band, and appears on the NOLA pianist's Grammy-winning LP Go-Go Juice. Hall toured with Robert Randolph and the Family Band, John Scofield, and briefly with Tedeschi-Trucks Band, before he was chosen as a keyboardist/vocalist for Warren Haynes Band. Hall appears on Warren Haynes Band's studio album Man in Motion and live LP Live at the Moody Theater, released on Stax Records. Hall appears on the Grammy nominated Family Dinner Vol.1 from Snarky Puppy, as well as Grammy-nominated album from New Orleans own Cha Wa. Hall has also appeared onstage with Marcus King, Pretty Lights, Dave Matthews Band, and more. In 2012, Hall co-founded The Nth Power, a funk/soul/R&B band with former Beyonce drummer Nikki Glaspie. In 2015 Hall departed The Nth Power and soon released Nigel Hall Band's critically acclaimed debut Ladies & Gentleman... A Bonnaroo 2013 performance saw Hall share the stage with the likes of Chaka Khan, Willie Weeks, James Gadsden, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Solange, members of the Wu-Tang Clan, Anthony Hamilton, SchoolBoy Q, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Chance the Rapper, and Thundercat. As a solo artist, Hall has been nominated for the New Orleans Offbeat awards, won New Orleans Big Easy Award, and has been a featured solo artist at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival for five consecutive years. Hall will be performing at New Orleans’ Essence Music Festival for the first time in July 2019. Nigel Hall joined Lettuce as a full-time keyboardist and vocalist in 2015. Hall is featured on Lettuce's forthcoming fifth full-length LP ELEVATE, due in June 2019. Nigel and I talk about all kinds of stuff including where he came from, what his favorite Christmas song is, All kinds of music stuff, and the importance of living your truth and being who you are. This is one of my favorite episodes yet and I think you’ll like it also. We talked yesterday and here’s how our conversation went.
A packed episode with new Christmas music from Phoebe Bridgers, Nick Lowe with Los Straitjackets, and guitarist Patrick Droney, who covers Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You" as part of this season's Spotify Singles. This week I have two interviews. First, I talk to singer Judith Owen and comic actor and satirist Harry Shearer, who have hosted "Christmas Without Tears"--a holiday Christmas party on stage--yearly since 2005. They talk about the event, Christmas music, and their plans to stream "A Very Virtual Christmas Without Tears" on Friday, December 11. Normally, they would have musical guests from the cities they perform in; this year, they'll have performances from Richard Thompson, Jon Cleary, Steve Lukather with Ringo Starr, Julia Fordham, Topsy Chapman and Solid Harmony, The Stanton Moore Trio, burlesque artist Trixie Minx, Chris Difford of Squeeze, actor John Goodman, Donald Fagen, and many more. I interviewed Owen and Shearer about Christmas music for MySpiltMilk.com in 2012, and recently I talked to Shearer about his new album, The Many Moods of Donald Trump. After that, I talk to actress Amy Carlson (FBI: Most Wanted, Blue Bloods, The Society) and guitarist Seth Jabour (Les Savy Fav, 8G Band) to discuss Office Romance, their project with Syd Butler, also of Les Savy Fav and the 8G Band. So far, they have got together to record two Christmas records, the most recent of which, Holidays of Love, was released this fall. We talk about Amy's love of the classic Christmas compilations--the kind I talked about with Joe Adragna of The Junior League last year--and how Jabour and Butler's job making music for The Late Show with Seth Meyers helped them write music for the album. For the occasion, Carlson put together a Spotify playlist of songs that inspired her or that we talked about in our conversation. If you like this week’s show, subscribe or follow 12 Songs at Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify, and now, Pandora.

Episode 111: This week, one last round of visits with great artists visiting Nashville to showcase during AmericanaFest 2019. My guests include two songwriter artists from the United Kingdom who've made American music their own - veteran New Orleans piano man Jon Cleary and Northern Ireland's soul-singing dynamo Foy Vance. Up first, an absolutely amazing songwriter from Portland, OR, Anna Tivel. Her album The Question is widely seen as one of the finest of the year.
Sandy Kay our resident Entertainment reporter on Saturday Nights tells Tony all the latest entertainment news and events including a show called Elvis - An American Trilogy at the Astor, Jon Cleary at Freo Social and they speak about a range of new movies that are now in cinemas.
Blues guitarist Coco Montoya and his band are coming to the Sorg Opera House in Middletown on Thursday night, October 24th for one show only at 8pm. Their sounds are surely going to rock out given the great acoustics in this hall which is loved by the musicians who play there. It's an intimate setting, so the audience will be up close and personal to these blues musicians. Their album, "Coming in Hot," is Coco Montoya's 5th album with Alligator Records and features studio musicians from the west coast as well as special guests including Jon Cleary . But, he'll be bringing his regular band with him on the tour. I spoke with Mr. Montoya by phone on Tuesday, October 15th about this new album, one of the songs on the album, a memory of working with Albert Collins , and his guitars. I'd also like to thank Elaine Diehl for her assistance editing our interview.
Soul provider Nigel Hall is in many ways an artist who needs no introduction. An in-demand sideman, he’s built a mighty foundation of funk over the years onstage and in the studio with collaborators including the Warren Haynes Band, Jon Cleary, Soulive, Oteil Burbridge and Roosevelt Collier, Ledisi, the Soul Rebels, Lettuce and countless others. Legions of fans are already well in the know about Hall’s copious keyboard chops and powerful vocal style. But even to them, his Feel Music/Round Hill debut solo album will be a revelation – a confirmation that Hall has stepped out front and center into a creative space to call his own. “Ladies & Gentlemen… Nigel Hall,” due out in digital format November 13th and vinyl November 27, captures the spirit of the songs that made Hall a musician. It was produced by Eric Krasno, guitarist and producer of music by a dizzying array of artists including Norah Jones, Justin Timberlake, Talib Kweli, Aaron Neville and Matisyahu. Hall’s original compositions, from the blissful, sunny ‘60s-style soul grooves of lead single “Gimme A Sign” and “Never Gonna Let You Go” to the teasing, R&B kiss of downtempo cuts like “Too Sweet” and “Call on Me” to show off a record collector’s pitch-perfect knowledge and a lifelong fan’s passion for gritty, muscular rhythm and blues, funky dancefloor rave-ups and sultry bedroom serenades. Nigel Hall grew up in Washington, D.C., in a highly musical family. His fingers first touched the keys before he hit kindergarten age, and his ears were wide open.
Iconic New Orleanian John Hyman joins the show and talks about moving to the French Quarter in the mid-70s, hustling gigs, settling into a lifetime of downtown New Orleans living and music. John talks about his involvement with Krewe Du Vieux & WWOZ, and we talk about some of the legendary musicians we’ve lost as of late. Plus we get into the merits of a living street culture vs. museum life. Thanks for tuning in, sharing, subscribing!

KATIE KNIPP Announces Release of 'Take it With You' LP FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 23, 2018 - Northern California Blues Americana Singer / Songwriter KATIE KNIPP has announced the release of her long anticipated, 5th album, Take it With You. Due out November 7, Take it With You features Neil Campisano on drums, Zack Proteau on bass, and Brett Vaughn Rechtfertig on guitar while Katie sings and plays various instruments including piano, slide dobro guitar, and harmonica. Player “After focusing 20 years of my life on my music, it took the births of my two sons and associated sacrifices of motherhood testing my commitment for me to truly appreciate what that means. Some of these lyrics to the songs were typed into my phone at 3am while breastfeeding. With the support of my family, I was able to return as a solo act, and my attitude has completely changed. My love for music had been tested and I couldn’t be more grateful now for ANY time I get to play, especially after the pregnancy carpal tunnel healed. I started writing songs from a more natural state of just pure love and they come easily to me now. I’m no longer trying to prove myself because there’s only one me out there.” - Katie Knipp cdbabycoverofficial Track List: 1. Ya Make it So Hard to Sing the Blues 2. I Don’t Sing for You 3. Letters 4. Metro in Paris 5. I Will Stick Around 6. Come Back 7. Get Outta My Dream 8. Santa Cruz Blues 9. Another Round 10. Last Man Out Pre-Order Take it With You Amazon-MP3-Logo BANDCAMP-LOGO-WHITE 18p6-26-134 Northern California Blues Americana Siren Katie Knipp is equipped with powerful vocals and plays a variety of instruments from boogie woogie piano to slide guitar, to honest harmonica laden stories in between. Her raw solo act captures audiences hearts from her first notes. She has opened for Robert Cray, The Doobie Brothers, Tim Reynolds, Jon Cleary, The James Hunter Six, among many others. Currently releasing her 5th album in November of 2018, her sound has been compared to Bonnie Raitt, Joss Stone, Beth Hart, and what the late Taz Digregorio of the Charlie Daniels band once said, “Dylan in a Dress!”
One of the great things about New Orleans is, you never know who might be standing in line with you at the supermarket, or sitting next to you at the bar. A perfectly normal, unassuming person turns out to be, in this case, the photographer who took the iconic images of, among others, Tina Turner, Lou Reed, Dennis Hopper, and is the author of the book A Portrait of M, the pictorial authority on Madonna. The guy s name is Curtis Knapp. And there s the other quiet, unassuming guy. Who turns out to be CR Gruver, keyboardist in the band The New Orleans Suspects, and next in line in the lineage of great New Orleans piano players, from Professor Longhair through Dr John and Jon Cleary. And on top of that, CR has recently opened a NOLA franchise of the famous School of Rock the same one Jack Black made famous in the movie is a real thing and CR is the local Jack Black. Ali James took violin lessons so she could get a violin, took ballet so she could get tap shoes, and got married so she could get health insurance. She no longer has the vioin or the shoes and the husband has tirned into a "wusband" who she keeps stashed away in the shed at the back of her Mid City house. Photos at Wayfare by Jill Lafleur.

Grammy-nominated drummer/singer Jamison Ross is proving that he’s not a one-hit-wonder with the release of his latest recording for Concord Jazz. Titled All For One, the winner of the 2012 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Drum Competition, Ross is solidifying his reputation as one of his generation's brightest young drummer/vocalists. Accompanied by pianist Chris Pattishall, guitarist Rick Lollar (both of whom played on the 2015 debut), bassist Barry Stephenson, and Cory Irvin on Hammond organ and Fender Rhodes. Ross exceeds expectations set by his debut release and heightens his listeners' appreciation for his compositional integrity, vocals, arranging and bandleader skills in this eclectic mix of blues, jazz, R&B and soul. The 13-disc recording features down home New Orleans-style of blues and jazz singing as well as some pure straight ahead bebop that surely was gleaned as an accompanist to some of today’s most revered jazz artists including singer Cécile McLorin Salvant, pianists Jonathan Batiste, Dr. John and Jon Cleary; and bassist Christian McBride. Ross also has accompanied singer and composer Carmen Lundy, who invited Ross to join her band prior to the Thelonius Monk competition. The recording opens with "A Mellow Time,” which is a mighty remake of the 1966 tune written by Allen Toussaint and made famous by Lee Dorsey. The title track – "All For One” – is a groovin’ Crescent City-based song written and recorded in 1993 by Wilson Turbinton, better known as Willie Tee. Written By Sounds of Timeless Jazz
In 2017, Basin Street Records celebrated it’s 20 Year Anniversary as an Independent Record Label. The label features the wonderful sounds of New Orleans with artists such as Kermit Ruffins, Irvin Mayfield, Rebirth Brass Band, Jon Cleary, Los Hombres Calientes, Jeremy Davenport, Bonerama, and so many more. Founder and Owner, Mark Samuels, started the label in 1997 with the release of Kermit Ruffins - the Barbecue Swingers Live, which was recorded at the history music venue, Tipitina’s. The labels second album, Los Hombres Calientes won a Latin Billboard Award, and the 2012 Rebirth Brass Band album “Rebirth of New Orleans,” brought the label it’s first Grammy win. In this conversation, Mark Samuels shares these and many more stories. You’ll learn how the label started, New Orleans culture, and many lessons on running an independent record label. Cornell Williams is one of my favourite 'pocket' style players, in that his time, tone and taste (note choice) are pretty much perfect for the material he is performing, and on the odd occasion when he does step forward he is super lyrical yet still so funky! It was a real pleasure to get to hang and jam with Nell while he was in town with Jon Cleary, I even got to play THAT Modulus, what a bass! Although he grew up in a small town just south of London, England, spend some time listening to Jon Cleary and you will swear he is the result of some sort of super-engineering experiment that sought to combine the absolute best of New Orleans/Funk/ Soul music into one performer- it's in his DNA- from the way he plays to the subtle ways it permeates his native English accent. In addition to being a pianist and guitarist of impeccable taste and feel, he is also a gifted vocalist. Cleary, who has 8 solo records to date, recently won a Grammy last year for Go Go Juice, (a record I had the pleasure of being a part of). He was also a member of Bonnie Raitt's band for 10 years - (she once referred to him the “9th Wonder of the World”. ) He frequently plays at the world famous Maple Leaf Bar, a place that he has had a connection with since the early 80's, as well as touring all over the world with his band. In this interview we discuss piano, guitar styles, his early years and passion finally making it to New Orleans, James Booker stories, Bonnie Raitt, what makes the New Orleans sound unique to other styles, and much much more. We do a fair bit of playing in this one too. This interview took place at Jon's home/studio in New Orleans, LA on June 2nd, 2017.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-riff-raff-with-shane-theriot/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

After the 100th Episode Party gets scuttled by public health concerns and the stay-at-home order, the Troubled Men pivot to a series of 3-way calls to catch up with previous guests. In the first installment, Squirrel Nut Zippers founder Jimbo Mathus, composer/guitarist Jonathan Freilich, bassist/saloon owner Dave Clements, master drummer Johnny Vidacovich, and Tony Award-winning actor/musician Michael Cerveris check in from their safe houses to report on life since the podcast and where they're at now. In the wake of the worldwide pandemic, they engage in some gallows humor and try to laugh to keep from crying. Topics include essential businesses, conspiracy theories, a health tip, tours interrupted, the social contract, rats, quitters, an unanswered call to Dave Slut, a prediction, mild symptoms, movies, a COVID test, the Clempire, an open tab, a bad joke, partying weight, nicknames, a job offer, campaign strategy, the Louisiana governor, a drink offer, messages of hope and faith, a long lockdown, a session with Irma Thomas, Germania Hall, a Jon Cleary session, HBO's “The Plot Against America,” managing expectations, a new record, a backwoods locale, neighbors, the census, early exposure, David Simon, AA, and much more.
