In this episode Jack Tuckner, Esq. and Catherine Crider, Esq. of Tuckner, Sipser, Weinstock & Sipser, LLP, a NY-based law firm dedicated to workplace gender rights, join us to discuss the significant challenges faced by women at midlife, particularly around menopause, and how the workplace can better support them. The conversation is a deep dive into the legal landscape of workplace accommodations, how to navigate discussions about menopause with employers, and why it's critical to push for legislative changes, such as a Menopause Workplace Fairness Act.With over 20 years of experience, Jack advocates for working women at all stages of their reproductive life cycle, from pregnancy through menopause. His practice focuses on combating sexual harassment, pregnancy discrimination, illegal gender pay disparity, sex discrimination, maternity leave matters, unlawful retaliation, and wrongful termination. He has long fought for women's rights and against the unequal and wrongful treatment of women in the workplace. In doing so, Jack has gained a reputation for feminist activism and the pursuit of gender justice in pay for all women. Catherine works with the team advocating for women's rights in the workplace. As part of her advocacy, she represents clients facing challenges including combating sexual harassment, pregnancy discrimination, illegal pay disparity, and other forms of workplace discrimination. In addition to being a lawyer, Catherine is an active labor and postpartum doula helping families. When she's not working with families one-on-one, she teaches childbirth education and postpartum classes for new parents across the United States.Topics covered in this episode:Understanding the Legal Landscape Around Menopause: While there are no specific laws in place directly addressing menopause currently, the symptoms women experience during perimenopause and menopause could fall under existing protections like the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), and the Civil Rights Act (Title VII). These laws provide a foundation for women to request reasonable accommodations, such as flexibility in scheduling or adjustments to the work environment. Why Workplace Accommodations are Crucial: Menopause, much like pregnancy, requires acknowledgment in the workplace. Women at midlife may face challenges due to symptoms like hot flashes, insomnia, or brain fog, which can negatively impact their work performance. Providing accommodations such as flexible hours or temperature control can help women continue to excel in their careers. The Fight for the Menopause Workplace Fairness Act: Modeled after the recently passed Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA), this new proposed menopause protective legislation seeks to ensure that menopause-related symptoms receive the same protections as pregnancy, helping to protect women's rights in the workplace.Take Action and Start the Conversation: Women need to advocate for themselves. This starts with awareness of their rights and having conversations with their employers about the accommodations they need to continue to optimally perform their jobs. Promoting Awareness and Change: As more women work longer and remain in their careers well into midlife, the need for understanding and accommodations becomes even more pressing. By advocating for change at both an individual and legislative level, women can ensure that their workplaces evolve to support them throughout all stages of life. For more insights on navigating workplace challenges during menopause and advocating for your rights, tune in to this impactful episode of The Positive Pause*.

Why are we seeing such a rise in youth mental health diagnosis? How do we relativise this against the rise in mental health awareness? What's the best approach for parents seeking solutions? How can social-connection and loneliness completely change trauma integration? What role does the recent explosion of persuasive technologies in young peoples lives play in the changing situation? In this episode we have the important topic of Youth Mental Health to get ourselves up to date on. Today we're going to try and unravel these often divisary issues in a balanced way; we're going to be discussing the importance of threat and safety to a child's state of mind as they develop; the power of the parent or carer's own unresolved issues to transmit to young people, creating symptoms in the child; the importance of going to the root of the problem rather than just treating symptoms; the role of escapism as an emotional avoidance strategy, and how digital platforms and device providers have taken advantage of that tendency, and the parenting strategies to guide this; and we're going to discuss the role of shame in us avoiding facing these issues. Fortunately, considering the nuanced and potentially triggering topic of the mental well being of the children we parent and teach, today's guest has just released the paper back version of his new book on exactly this topic, “How the world is making our children mad and what to do about it”. As a hugely experienced child psychotherapist and founder of the charity “Apart of Me” that supports children to transform their loss into compassion, he is perfectly placed to give us un update on this, and is filled with excellent stories and advice to help us face it. He is of course Louis Weinstock, a transpersonal psychotherapist and mindfulness specialist, who has worked with a wide range of sufferers from the criminal justice system, to drug addicts, to homeless people, to troubled teens and their parents. What we discuss: 00:00 Intro. 09:00 Our mental life is inseparable from our environment. 11:45 ‘Fetal programming' is applied in utero by the mother's environment. 14:10 Improvements in kid's mental health, simply from parents doing the work. 18:45 Children having behaviour issues at the same age as their parent's had trauma. 21:20 The evolutionary history of shame. 25:40 The difference between shame and guilt. 28:00 Rupture & repair: conflict in relationships is bearable and repairable. 29:25 Is psychotherapy worth it for kids, considering the stigma? 34:15 Mental health awareness can exaggerate our negative view of ourselves. 38:30 Massive jump in recent stats on youth mental health. 41:00 ‘Roots' of mental health issues and ‘fruits' we can learn from them. 45:20 Suffering and transformation: post-traumatic growth. 49:50 Escaping into virtual realities: Dissociation. 53:00 The ‘freeze' response - shutting the body down. 01:00:40 Resilience explained - fragile vs anti fragile. 01:04:00 The connection between loneliness and trauma. 01:05:25 Youth mental health and device/internet addiction. 01:07:25 ‘Variable reward' strategy taken from gambling slot machines. 01:12:30 Clear differences in kid's moods and sleep after too long on devices. 01:14:20 Parenting solutions to regulating screen time peacefully. 01:16:40 No devices in the bedroom, particularly in the evenings before bed. 01:20:30 Awareness: they're capable of reflecting on their behaviour. 01:24:20 Unsupervised play outside and in nature. 01:25:40 The world is safer rather than less safe than in the past. In today's episode, we interview Dr. Leonhard Weinstock on the topic of mast cell activation disorders and the gut, which are becoming epidemic in the population. Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) is a complex and often misunderstood disorder that involves the abnormal release of mast cells in the body. These cells are an essential part of our immune system, but when they become overactive, they can trigger a range of symptoms and health issues. Key Points ✅ How did you get into the study of medicine and gastroenterology and what led you to become an expert in MCAS? ✅ Describe in detail what symptoms are related to MCAS and how symptoms might manifest in the gut and other areas of the body? ✅ What do you think we've seen a rise in MCAS diagnoses? ✅ Let's talk more about TRIAD (EDS, MCAS, POTS) and how this can manifest together? ✅ What are some ways we can treat MCAS? ✅ What is the connection with MCAS and psychiatric symptoms/mental illness? Dr. Leonard B. Weinstock Dr. Leonard B. Weinstock is Board Certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine. Today on part two of our interview with Lili Haydn on this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we continue our story about how Lili grew up in the most unconventional way in Hollywood and came out of it a Grammy winner in spite of the amazing conclusion we discuss today. In part one, Lili gave us the background on her mother Lotus Wienstock who was a trail blazing stand-up comedian who wrote books like The Lotus Position & opened The Comedy Store's Belly Room for female comedians. She found herself as one of the new faces of stand-up comedy just prior to the 80's comedy boom that happened shortly thereafter. Lili's bond with her mother was palpable in this episode but we also learn more about her father, a man named David Jove who counted among his friends the Grateful Dead's L.S.D. connection/soundman Bear as well as musician Peter Ivers whose death as the host of a show conceived by Jove is still an unsolved mystery today, This was one of those episodes that left us emotionally spent as Lili was incredibly open and honest about her complicated relationship with her father. She didn't hold back which was a very brave thing to do in an interview and we thank her for it. Take a listen to part two of our interview w/ Lili Haydn on this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast.
Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we take a listen to part one of our conversation with Lili Haydn, the Grammy winning composer and performer who has perhaps the most fascinating and most brutally honest story we've ever recorded. It was so jam packed and unbelievable that we didn't even get a chance to ask her about what it was like starring in Easy Money with Rodney Dangerfield and Joe Pesci. And if you are a listener to this podcast, does that sound like something Josh would pass up? Well, part one of our interview with Lili will tell you all you need to know as to why. Oh the things we learn on this episode. Lili and Josh connect on the fact that he was once at a Mose Allison show and Lili asked to perform with him at the Catalina in Los Angeles back in the 90s. What are the odds? But it's Lili's mother, stand-up comedian/writer Lotus Weinstock and her father David Jove that take up the bulk of the conversation. And for good reason. We touch on subjects as diverse as performing with Jimmy Page, her mother founding The Belly Room at The Comedy Store, Lenny Bruce, the infamous Redlands bust of the Rolling Stones, New Wave Theater, The Source Family, Stanley Owsley, Chevy Chase, Peter Ivers and Joan Rivers. All we can tell you is that this barely scratches the surface. This part one episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast is one of the most intense, harrowing, amazing and truthful episodes we have ever done. Take a listen.
