Send us a textOn this episode of the Midwest Mixtape Podcast, Rogers Stevens of Blind Melon joins us for an in-depth conversation about the band's past, present, and future. Rogers reflects on Blind Melon's upcoming performance at the Pig and Whiskey Festival in St. Louis on Friday, May 9, where they'll be sharing the stage with Smash Mouth, and also looks ahead to a major milestone: the band's first-ever show at Red Rocks while supporting O.A.R. Rogers shares stories from Blind Melon's early days, including their struggles to break through, the cultural phenomenon of “No Rain,” and the bittersweet reality of being labeled a "one-hit wonder." He opens up about pivotal moments in the band's journey, from navigating the music industry's highs and lows to overcoming the tragedy of losing their iconic frontman, Shannon Hoon—a gifted songwriter whose legacy still shapes the band's music and message today. We also dive into Blind Melon's evolution, their move to New Orleans, and how the city's jazz scene—including artists like Kermit Ruffins and Rebirth Brass Band—inspired tracks like “Lemonade.” Rogers gives insight into the meaning behind songs like “Skinned,” and how the band blends upbeat melodies with deeper, sometimes darker, lyrical themes. This is a must-watch for fans of Blind Melon, 90s alt-rock, and those curious about the resilience and reinvention of one of rock's most unique and heartfelt bands.

New Orleans is a place where virtuosity is always deployed with a celebratory spirit, and Crescent City Jewels is like a Gratitude Journal in song, a rollicking collection that expresses NEA Jazz Master, Grammy-winning producer, trombonist and bandleader, Delfeayo Marsalis, appreciation for the good things in life at a time when so much attention seems to focus on doom and gloom. In this latest album, Delfeayo set out to celebrate the undersung heroes in his own hometown. To accomplish that, he's brought together a host of veteran and rising New Orleans musicians, as well as a number of guest stars, including big brother Branford Marsalis for a pair of jaw-dropping sax showcases, Rebirth Brass Band co-founder and Big Easy ambassador Kermit Ruffins, “Piano Prince of New Orleans” Davell Crawford, drummer extraordinaire Herlin Riley, and trombonist Maurice “Miracle Meaux” Trosclair. “One of our goals is to show the breadth and the dynamic possibilities of New Orleans music. Our philosophy is to take the important ingredients from past generations and use them in the gumbo that we're creating today.” That's where our conversation begins.

Almost immediately, he found himself as sideman for notable locals such as Kermit Ruffins, Michael Ward and The Reward, and Sun Ra trumpeter, Michael Ray. In 1992 he co-founded the New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars(NOKAS), a pioneering klezmer ensemble that infused that music with the vibrancy and energy of the funk, jazz and brass music of New Orleans. To date he has had opportunity to play with most of New Orleans' greatest musicians from across all genres. NOKAS was playing some of his compositions, but by 1993 he found himself seeking outlets for his compositions in other styles and forms. After playing with a plethora of combos and experimenting with many great local musicians he formed Naked On The Floor and eventually The Naked Orchestra. Naked on the Floor (quintet) and the Naked Orchestra (18-24 piece creative orchestra) play Freilich's original compositions exclusively and still play regularly in New Orleans. He has appeared at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival 24 times as well as headlining the Berlin Jazz Festival with NOKAS. He has appeared at numerous other festivals inside and outside the country including Bonnaroo, the Ann Arbor Jazz Festival, The American Folklife festival at the Washington Monument, collaborations with poet, Andrei Codrescu at the Holocaust museum in NYC and many others. Other notable work includes appearances with Sam Rivers, Burton Greene, Marshall Allen, The Wild Magnolias and backing songwriters such as Robbie Robertson. He has done arrangements for a wide range of recordings from, Peter Stampfel to Hal Willner's presentation of U@ doing music of T-Rex. He is featured on over 21 recordings ranging from Klezmer to Afro-Cuban and avant-garde orchestra music. Recently he put out two CD's of a large orchestra playing his original compositions, a small group, and played on Marianne Faithfull's latest release. Many of these recordings are either Big Easy or Offbeat entertainment award winners across a number of categories. He also has music featured in films and TV shows (Andy Richter conquers the Universe, The Dukes of Hazzard(Warner Home Video) as well as commercials for companies such as Southwest Airlines and Mercedes. n 2016 he produced and arranged an album, NOLA? for legendary Basque artist, Fermin Muguruza. Rearrangements of Muguruza's classic work utilizing the great players and sounds of New Orleans. That led to a very successful European run for the Basque New Orleans Orchestra. Other arranging credits include Hal Wilner and U2 tribute to T. Rex and Grammy Award winner, Peter Stampfel's 100 songs of the 20th century project. His work includes 4 completed and performed operatic works: a comic-satirical opera, Bang the Law, about a couple of New Orleans lawyers and their movements through New Orleans class detritus after Hurricane Katrina, a two movement orchestral fantasy about Elias Cannetti at carnival, formation of a new quintet to play new original compositions, an octet reduction of Peter and the Wolf for a New Orleans Contemporary Art Center/Guggenheim foundation presentation; a second opera, ee me & cummings thee which premiered in New Orleans in Nov. 2011. 2019 saw the completion of two operas. One a hyper-collaborative project with writer, Bernard Pearce, The Coronation, on the selecting of queen bees. In June 2019 he wrote an operetta on the Dirty Letters of James Joyce to Nora Barnacle, titled Darling, Please do not be offended at what I wrote. He is the subject of the one hour radio documentary Jonathan Freilich's Freedom Double-O Naked Klezmer Jazz Latin Boogaloo: The Radio Documentary by award winning documentarian, David Kunian and was the 2008 Louisiana Governors' Music Fellowship Award recipient. This year he figured as a Rising Star guitarist in Downbeat's Critics Poll. Freilich was born Oct.13, 1968 in Philadelphia, Pa. He spent most of his early years, up until a late teenager in London, England before moving to Los Angeles in 1985. Thereafter, he moved to Santa Cruz, Ca in 1987 before the 1989 move to New Orleans. Specific areas of the US are associated with specific industries. In those places, people who work in those industries can make a lot of money. For example, Silicon Valley is known for tech. Software development is so lucrative for so many people there its driven the cost-of-living sky high. In Los Angeles, the TV and movie industry creates enormous wealth for actors, directors, and a large number of allied careers. New Orleans is famous for its music. But, with literally one or two exceptions, you'll have a hard time meeting a musician or anyone else in the local music business who's getting wealthy. Why is that? Reid Wick, Senior Membership & Project Manager at The Recording Academy – the people who own the Grammy's – says its because when we were at the pinnacle of nationwide musical importance in the 1950's, nobody had the foresight to develop a music business infrastructure. And we're still paying the price for that today. How do we fix it? Reid has ideas. It's not like Reid or other people in the music business are sitting on their hands, doing nothing to change the status of musicians in New Orleans. Take, for example MACCNO, Music and Culture Coalition of New Orleans. MACCNO was formed in 2012, spearheaded by musician Kermit Ruffins' angry response to the city's proposed crackdown on live music permits. The organization has been a highly visible and vocal advocate for musicians' and other artists' ever since. The Executive Director of MACCNO is Ethan Ellestad. We know only too well that consensus alone doesn't bring about change. We all agree, for example, that there should be equal pay for equal work. But women are still paid less than men. Similarly, you won't find a single person in New Orleans who disagrees with the notion that musicians should be paid at a level commensurate with their importance as some of our most valued citizens. And yet, year after year, decade after decade, we're still having this same conversation about musicians' struggles to make a decent living here. At some point this has to change. And when it does, it's going to be because of the tireless efforts of people like Reid Wick and Ethan Ellestad. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at NOLA Pizza in the NOLA Brewing Taproom. CARY MORIN has been described as "one of the best acoustic pickers on the scene today.” With deft fingerstyle guitar and vocals that alternately convey melodic elation and gritty world-weariness, Morin crafts an inimitable style often characterized as roots-infused Native Americana with hints of bluegrass, folk, blues, and rock. He has performed at renowned venues across the globe, including the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center, and is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades. LILLI LEWIS is a classically trained, award-winning singer/songwriter from New Orleans. Lewis is said to have "Sister Rosetta Tharpe's virtuoso commitment to her instrument and Odetta's vocal power, creating a show that is a force of nature.” Opening for Alana Davis, Dr. John, Kirk Joseph, Kermit Ruffins, Henry Butler and Jon Cleary to name a few, the social justice themes and human rights messages that filter into her lyrics, as well as her gospel-tinged vocals and instrumentation are a direct result from her upbringing spent listening to her father's sermons and southern choirs while learning the northern sensibilities of her civil rights activist mother. WoodSongs Kid: Ameera De Mel just turned 13 and has a powerful voice. She is from Lexington, Kentucky.

Nayo was actually visiting Clark Atlanta University and during her visit, she toured Spelman College! Once she entered the gates, she felt like she was "home!" While at Spelman she majored in economics and she was pushed not only by her classmates to excel, but one of her professors actually called her one evening to push her! She didn't always know that she would pursue music as a career! She was born in Chicago, Illinois into a family of musicians and destined to be in show business. As an accomplished jazz musician and music educator, her father William “Doc” Jones groomed and nurtured her natural ability from a very young age. Currently Nayo is based in New Orleans, LA where she performs regularly with her band “The Nayo Jones Experience”. George covers a lot of ground with Chris Metzler, Quinn Costello, and Jeff Springer; co-directors of Rodents of Unusual Size. Documentary about the nutria overtaking and destroying Louisiana's swamp land. I also ask Chris and Jeff about their earlier collaborations, Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone and Plagues & Pleasures On the Salton Sea, and their work as Tilapia Film.We learn about nutria itch and the right lighting for country music videos, among other things. Hard headed Louisiana fisherman Thomas Gonzales doesn't know what will hit him next. After decades of hurricanes and oil spills he faces a new threat - hordes of monstrous 20 pound swamp rats. Known as “nutria”, these invasive South American rodents breed faster than the roving squads of hunters can control them. And with their orange teeth and voracious appetite they are eating up the coastal wetlands that protects Thomas and his town of Delacroix Island from hurricanes. But the people who have lived here for generations are not the type of folks who will give up without a fight. Thomas and a pack of lively bounty hunters are hellbent on saving Louisiana before it dissolves beneath their feet. It is man vs. rodent. May the best mammal win.Rodents of Unusual Size on Kanopy, AppleTV, Amazon Prime.Everyday Sunshine: The Story of FishbonePlagues & Pleasures On The Salton SeaFollow Rodents Of Unusual Size on:Twitter: @rousdocumentaryInstagram: @rousdocumentaryFollow us on:Twitter: @supdocpodcastInstagram: @supdocpodcastFacebook: @supdocpodcastsign up for our mailing listAnd you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.

Episode 007 of *The Upful Life Podcast* comin' atcha with special guest Derrick Smoker, NOLA's own drummer/emcee/singer-songwriter/jazz-cat/lightning rod. Back in late October, the man they call D-Free was kind enough to meet me midday, somewhere near the Bywater, for a colorful stroll thru his career & journey. Embarking from Houston to NOLA in 1992, to study Jazz at UNO, we revisit all the people, places, and experiences that life as a Crescent City working musician will manifest. AKA Derrick Freeman, who you may know from Soul Brass Band, Smokers World, Kermit Ruffins and the BBQ Swingers, Low End Theory Players, or even way back in the Crönk days, as well as the HBO David Simon docu-drama Treme, and (my personal fave of the Smoker legacy), 2012's seminal hip-hop/R&B/Comedy album Blurple Pain. DERRICK SMOKER SEGMENT at 11 MINS, INTERVIEW 22:45 I asked this dude to rap for a reason, & Derrick brings the goods in his atypical no-holds-barred/frank AF fashion, with recollections dipped in both humor and the realness. We keep things mostly music and mostly NOLA, as Smoker covers career-spanning relationships with luminaries, legends and locals alike, including (but not limited to) Ellis Marsalis, Walter Payton, Ed Peterson, Shannon Powell, Kermit Ruffins, Davis Rogan, Cyril Neville, and many, many more. Smoker gets very poignant and reflective when recalling the myriad ways in which the late, great Theryl Houseman DeClouet (formerly of Galactic) put him on game. We get into Derrick's various projects thru the years like CoolBone, All That, Mass Hysteria, the all-too-short-lived NOLA funk gangstas Crönk. Of course his current gig, SOUL Brass Band, as well as solo albums like Blurple Pain and DWB (Driving While Black). Theryl "Houseman" deClouet The HOUSEMAN Cometh! album cover With regard to The Upful Life Podcast's intention to shine a light on human resilience, Derrick discusses the ups and downs of the music biz, especially in NOLA, and how he almost quit altogether. Later, he reveals how fellow drummer Nikki Glaspie put the battery in his back, her inspirational words motivation to get out and really do his own music. Inevitably during the chronological telling of his career path, Derrick also touches on his experience surrounding Hurricane Katrina, when he was overseas with a who's who of NOLA music, watching the storm footage and Superdome via Fox News. The aftermath and his wayward path back to the city, which took him from Brazil to Miami to Dallas to Alabama to Canada before he finally returned home to NOLA, while now-wife Carolyn held him down the whole way through. Later we get into the swamp of Jazz Fest politics - again from a local working musician's perspective- and why it's important for both Jazz Fest fans AND promoters to have the best intentions when returning to NOLA each and every spring. From where I sit (and what I do), this was an important dialogue to have with a brutally honest cat who is really living this on an authentic & local level. We wrap things up in the now, with SOUL Brass Band, his project with James R. Martin, Leon "Kid Chocolate" Brown, and a krewe that came together pretty much by accident. SOUL is now a white-hot book, taking Smoker & company global. We finally get hip to The Low End Theory Players, a local-to-NOLA live hip-hop ensemble that recreates the greatest works of titanic artists like OutKast, A Tribe Called Quest, Jay-Z, and more. A thrilling conversation with a musician and personality in the middle of all things New Orleans. In a nutshell- I asked Derrick to shoot me straight, and for exactly 100 minutes- he absolutely did, no two ways about it. All That Smoke plus B.Getz's usual ramblings du jour, & shout-outs to the good folks at Euphonic Conceptions. Closing (2:03:35) with the *Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week* : "I Get Lifted" by GALACTIC featuring the late Theryl "Houseman" deClouet. This past week, though still reeling from the July 2018 passing of their iconic former frontman, the five full-time members of Galactic purchased the legendary venue Tipitina's Uptown in New Orleans ! So this 2002 Galactic rendition of a K.C. & the Sunshine Band cut, with Houseman at the helm, culled from Live at Tipitina's: We Love 'Em Tonight, is our *Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week*. *Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week*: LISTEN HERE! In 2017, Basin Street Records celebrated it’s 20 Year Anniversary as an Independent Record Label. The label features the wonderful sounds of New Orleans with artists such as Kermit Ruffins, Irvin Mayfield, Rebirth Brass Band, Jon Cleary, Los Hombres Calientes, Jeremy Davenport, Bonerama, and so many more. Founder and Owner, Mark Samuels, started the label in 1997 with the release of Kermit Ruffins - the Barbecue Swingers Live, which was recorded at the history music venue, Tipitina’s. The labels second album, Los Hombres Calientes won a Latin Billboard Award, and the 2012 Rebirth Brass Band album “Rebirth of New Orleans,” brought the label it’s first Grammy win. In this conversation, Mark Samuels shares these and many more stories. You’ll learn how the label started, New Orleans culture, and many lessons on running an independent record label. Several weeks ago Dr. Gina Green posted an impassioned request to support the Association for Professional Behavior Analysts on Facebook, noting, among other things, that the organization is uniquely suited to advocate for the needs of both practitioners and clients in this unpredictable world of ours. One of the ways that she suggested supporting APBA was to attend the annual conference. Well, her plea worked on me, and I am in the process of making travel plans to New Orleans, where this year's conference is being held. After that, I started thinking about things I could do to encourage my fellow Behavior Analysts to attend as well. As such, I hope to have a future episode or two that highlights the content of the conference itself. Having said that, attending a conference is not only about sitting in a meeting room, dutifully taking notes and obtaining CE units. Let's be honest, it's also an opportunity to travel and see places that one would not ordinary visit on their own. Because this year's event is in the city of New Orleans, I thought that it would be fun to do an episode that highlights some non-clinical or practice-related reasons to attend APBA. In order to accomplish this, I reached out to my new friend and fellow podcaster, Mark Bologna of the Beyond Bourbon Street Podcast, a show that celebrates all that New Orleans has to offer. In this episode, the New Orleans native gives us perhaps the most concise visitor's guide to the city. We talk about everything from how to get to the conference hotel from the airport to local figures of speech. More importantly we spend a lot of time talking about cool places to eat, sightsee, and just hang out. Mark shares places to go not only for new visitors to the city, but he also mentions some very cool restaurants that only the locals know about. All in all, there's something for everyone in this episode (and if you're like me, you'll start to get hungry as Mark describes the local cuisine!). From a resources standpoint, this is perhaps the most content-rich episode I've done to date. There are almost 40 links to resources in these show notes. I listed them in the order in which they appear in the podcast. I have them in a downloadable PDF as well, so please feel free to share this with friends and co-workers who are considering a trip to New Orleans (whether for the conference or not). Here's the PDF (no email address required, actual links below): Session 19 Resource List In closing, I hope I've provided some additional incentive to attend the APBA conference! [APWW PGM #458] [Originally aired in 2005] Aug. 29, 2015 is the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, and the catastrophic failure of the Mississippi River levees that put the city of New Orleans under water. In tribute to the city’s struggles of the last 10 years, we are rebroadcasting our Hip Deep program made in spring 2005, a few short months before life in New Orleans was turned upside down. “Living in New Orleans, Part 1″ takes you to the rambunctious street music scene in the Crescent City around Mardi Gras time. This is one town where kids still pick up tubas, and young brass bands have lots of work, parading along the same funky streets where jazz was born. We’ll get inside the world of the Mardi Gras Indians as Hip Deep producer Ned Sublette, who is spending the year on the ground in New Orleans, talks with musician and educator Big Chief Donald Harrison; Sylvester Francis of the Backstreet Cultural Museum; scholar and former New Orleans resident Joseph Roach of Yale University, author of Cities of the Dead; and Vicki Mayer of Tulane University. We’ll hear music from Kermit Ruffins and Rebirth Brass Band, Cyril Neville and the Uptown All-Stars, and Bo Dollis and the Wild Magnolias. Produced by Ned Sublette.

Henry himself is perhaps best recognized around the world as the sweet toned trombonist featured in the Rebirth Brass Band, Galactic, and trumpeter Kermit Ruffins’ band, The Barbecue Swingers. He has also recorded and played with the Dirty Dozen, Treme and New Birth Brass Bands. He has imparted his fiery melodies on stages everywhere from New Orleans neighborhood barrooms to far away festivals before hundreds of thousands in Canada, Japan Australia, Brazil, Hungary, Spain and Thailand and command performances for the ambassadors of Senegal, Morocco, Egypt and Kuwait. Henry has been leading his own band for over 20 years. Like so many other eager young musicians in the Crescent City, he hung around older musicians to build his skills and develop his style. In 1985, the legendary musician, Anthony “Tuba Fats” Lacen, encouraged the 10-year-old prodigy, suggesting he put a band together. The Lil’ Rascals Brass Band has been together now for 26 years, still challenging second liners and rival bands with its hot beats. The ensemble has released two fine, very diverse albums. Since 2008, Henry has been touring with Galactic and has recorded 3 albums with them.In 2011, Henry started a new venture, establishing the Treme Funktet. It’s a funky sextet that’s comfortable moving from jazz to R&B and hip-hop, with an occasional visit to the second-line brass band style. In 2012 Henry won a Grammy Winner with the Rebirth Brass Band for the album Rebirth of New Orleans in the Best Regional Roots Category. Now working on his solo album, Corey Henry plans to pay tribute to all the veteran New Orleans musicians from whom he learned his craft, absorbing all they had to offer.
Trumpeter, cook, and weird smiler Kermit Ruffins joins the chefs for a series of forced musical tie ins. Cooking is like improvisation in music… in that sometimes there’s a trumpet? And then there’s a potluck for a group of musicians, except instead of a potluck, it’s a party catered by professional chefs? Let’s not be too […]

Long before teaming up with any these vanguard ensembles however, Henry, now 36, had been leading his own band for over twenty years. In 1998, they demonstrated their respect for traditional brass band music on We Shall Walk Through the Streets of the City which includes such classic numbers as “Paul Barbarin’s Second Line.” And in 2001 they released Buck It Like a Horse, a disc filled with sizzling original material, redefining a new era of brass band music. “I wanted to explore something different—do some of my own material and share some of my own ideas,” Henry says of the freedoms offered by Treme Funktet. The mastermind behind the Soul Brass Band and Smoker's World is a percussionist, composer, actor, and MC, with mentors such as Ellis Marsalis and Shannon Powell. From his 20 years with Kermit Ruffins and the BBQ Swingers as drummer and de facto tour manager, to the multiple bands he's founded and continues to lead, to his critically-acclaimed solo releases, Derrick has no shortage of energy, drive and wry humor. The Troubled Men welcome his positive influence. Hopefully some of it rubs off. Topics include pain relief, Los Tremolo Kings, a full calendar, a stolen ambulance, celebrity deaths, America's Most Wanted, a speeding ticket, 9-day weekends, the mayor's race, music training, Shannon Powell, the Sandbar at UNO, Cafe Brasil, living with Delfeayo Marsalis, solo projects, “DWB,” a George Clinton story, Biz Markie, stand-up comedy, slam poetry, psychedelics, a medical card, a Juan LaFonta commercial, “Manny's Choice,” and much more.
