In this week's installment of Catching Up On Cinema's "Stay the F@ck Inside" event month, Trevor and Kyle keep their heads down as they take a deep dive into Ben Wheatley's Free Fire (2016)! Starring Cillian Murphy, Armie Hammer, Jack Reynor, Sharlto Copely and Brie Larson, the film takes place in a single location and is essentially a 90 minute gunfight. Featuring stylish gunplay and sharp lensing, the film is a simple and entertaining actioner with a touch of dark comedy.
It's another very special Soundtracking this week as we take you to the Everyman Cinema in Hampstead, where director Alex Garland and his composers Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury came together for a Q&A following an exclusive screening of Annihilation. As you may know, the film hasn't had a cinematic release outside the US. You can, however, watch Annihilation on Netflix, and it's well worth your time if you haven't seen it already. Unusually for us, there a couple of spoilers in this episode too, which is all the more reason to check the movie out. Before Alex joined everyone on stage, Edith caught up with Geoff and Ben in the bar to discuss their other work, specifically on Ex Machina and Ben Wheatley's Free Fire. Their first score together was for Dredd. At least, it would have been had the studio not decided it wasn't suitable for the film. Thankfully, they shared their efforts anyway under the guise of Drokk. And it's with a spot of Drokk that we began - which basically means you're in for a real treat.
Richard Drumm and Sarah Cullen are back with their chit and their chat about the world of cinema. In this episode, our primo podders deliberate over Life, Mindhorn, Get Out, John Wick: Chapter 2, Raw, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, The Transfiguration, Fast & Furious 8, which Sarah debates took place in The Purge universe, while Richard dreams of Helen Mirren one day fighting The Rock. Finally the gang exchange shots at Ben Wheatley's Free Fire, and despair at Logan.
I set my sights on Ben Wheatley's Free Fire and explain why I think this is his best film since Kill List. Later, I discuss what it was like to sit through all 130 minutes of Netflix's latest Adam Sandler comedy, Sandy Wexler and after the outro I discuss the latest episode of The Leftovers. A slow week for new releases -- it's apparently all "Boss Baby" all the time these days -- gives us only one major new release this week, Ben Wheatley's "Free Fire," starring Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy and Armie Hammer. We disagree on it: One of our critics thinks it's a fun experiment, but the other found it mostly tiresome. Then, in our Reboot segment, we discuss how that Sidney Lumet's "Network" doesn't hold up nearly as well as you might remember, and Wes Anderson's "The Royal Tenenbaums" was a step forward for the filmmaker ... but just a peek at what he'd be able to do even better more than a decade later. Timestamps: 4:30 "Free Fire" 17:40 "Network" 38:58 "The Royal Tenenbaums" We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on Twitter, or griersonleitch@newrepublic.com. As always, give us a review on iTunes with the name of a movie you'd like us to review, and we'll discuss it on a later podcast. If an insane shootout like the one in Ben Wheatley's FREE FIRE ever broke out among critics, you can bet me and Joblo.com's Chris Bumbray would make it out alive. We bad like that, and it's also why he's the only one allowed on this episode of Cinema Royale to talk Wheatley's film starring Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, Armie Hammer, and Sharlto Copley. Plus, we'll take THE PROMISE with Terry George's historical drama starring Oscar Isaac, Christian Bale, and Charlotte Le Bon.  It's a film that's already being projected to lose a bundle, and we'll tell you whether it deserves to or not. All this plus news on CAPTAIN MARVEL, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 3, and more! Â
Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan continue their celebration of The Fast and the Furious franchise with their review of The Fate of the Furious. Directed by F. Gary Gray, this one pits Dominic Toretto against his family, forcing them to face the one man that may finally prove to be a challenge. We talk about the notable absence of Paul Walker, the extremely dark moments, and the (incorrect) decision to introduce Scott Eastwood and give Tyrese more lines than anyone else. Also, where is the Corona?! There's too much to talk about, plus we update our ranking of The Fast and the Furious action scenes to include two of the ones from the eighth film. Don't forget to check out Dylan's written review of the film, as well. There's so much more to discuss though. Dylan saw The Lure and David Lynch: The Art Life, Chris saw Song to Song and The Ticket, and we both discuss Your Name. Not only that, but there were three trailers that were released that demand our attention, including Kathryn Bigelow's Detroit, Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok, and Rian Johnson's Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi. There is no shortage of news, plus there are a bunch of blu-rays out this week including our pick of the week: Split - which you can listen to us discuss. Next week, we'll return with a review of Ben Wheatley's Free Fire. Film Fallout is a weekly podcast about film and television. Every week, Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan discuss news happening in the industry, blu-ray releases coming out this week, what they’ve been watching, and then a review of one movie. You can listen to it on SoundCloud, iTunes, or on BagoGames. Also follow us on Instagram for some behind-the-scenes magic. We are both on Twitter, if you’d like to follow us there. Chris is @HammerkopCross, Dylan is @DreaminDylanS, and you can follow the podcast @Filmfalloutcast. And finally, there is a Facebook page for the podcast if you’d like to ‘like’ us on that.
On this super bumper edition of Film Chat we review four thematically identical films. First up Danny takes aim at Ben Wheatley's Free Fire. He's made a film set in a house, a film set in a field and a film set in block of flats but can the British auteur make a film set in a warehouse? Yes. THEN Sam slashes his way through the colonial adventure drama, The Lost City of Z for which Robert Pattinson grew a beard that is even bigger than his fan base. THEN Danny tackles the lovingly crafted and lovecraftian The Void, a low budget siege horror movie where most of the budget went on tentacles. AND THEN Danny AND Sam join forces to examine the most talked about film of the week, or indeed any week, Revolution: New Art for a New World - a documentary about Russian revolutionary art. Mr's Allen and Connor look at Ben Wheatley's Free Fire, Anime adaptation Ghost in the Shell, PTSD drama Man Down, morality tale Graduation, throwback horror flick The Void, animated sequel Smurfs: The Lost Village, and Spanish adventure story Zip & Zap and the Marble Gang. Scarlett Johansson glides in to view in the Big Interview on this week's Talking Pictures. She's talking about her latest movie, the much-hyped Ghost In The Shell, which is released this week. Other new arrivals include Ben Wheatley's Free Fire and Shia LaBeouf as an ex-Marine in Man Down. On DVD, there's Adam Driver in Paterson, true-life boxing drama Bleed For This, the re-release of The Proud Valley and some Nic Cage nonsense called Vengeance: A Love Story. Plus there's the new top five at the British box office and the latest movie news headlines. All packed into 20 minutes!
Before writer Callum Petch had even got his foot through the door upon returning from Ben Wheatley's Free Fire last Sunday, he was answering a telephone call from Failed Critics to let us know exactly how it - and the rest of the BFI London Film Festival - had been this year. This special bonus podcast is the result of that call, as Callum kindly rounds up five of the best, and a few of the rest from the 60th LFF. If you've been following his posts on the site, you'll have a good idea of which movies came out top, as well as those that flattered to deceive. Did Paul Verhoeven's latest feature, Elle, make the cut? What about the new Denis Villeneuve sci-fi, Arrival? Was it as good as Sicario, Prisoners and Enemy? How was Oldboy director Park Chan-wook's The Handmaiden received? You'll just have to listen to the podcast to find out! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
