Today, we're joined by New York Times best-selling author David Grann. In this conversation, David opens up about his New York roots, his passion as a die-hard Knicks fan, and why he'll never approach someone reading his book in public. He shares stories of defying his mother's wishes to pursue his writing dream, his unexpected moment as an answer on Jeopardy, and the honor of making it onto President Obama's must-read list.David reflects on his decision to transition from reporting to writing, culminating in the gripping tale of The Lost City of Z. He explains why he chose to explore Percy Fawcett's fateful journey into the Amazon for his first book, shares his experiences in the jungle, and reveals the moment he found out he had made the New York Times bestseller list. From there, David takes us into the tragic history of the Osage people in his blockbuster book Killers of the Flower Moon. He dives into how he gained their trust and why he believes their story is one of the greatest injustices in American history. We also dive deep into his latest work, The Wager, where David shares how he first came across the story, his fascination with mutiny, cannibalism, and life on the high seas. And, of course, he opens up about seeing his books brought to life by Martin Scorsese, his time with Leonardo DiCaprio, his visit to Wager Island, and much more. This is an insightful and fun conversation with one of the greatest storytellers of our time. Enjoy!
Deep in the uncharted reaches of the Brazilian rainforest lies one of exploration's most enduring riddles. In 1925, a daring British explorer ventured there with two companions in search of a lost city that might reshape history. Then, on the threshold of the unknown, all three vanished. Theories swirl: hostile tribes, disease, or even a hidden new life among the forest's peoples. Join us as this week as we investigate the puzzling disappearance of Percy Fawcett and the Lost City of Z.Learn more about Locations Unknown: https://linktr.ee/LocationsUnknownCheck out our other shows on the Unknown Media Network:Crime Off The GridOff The TrailsThe Peanut Butter and Mountains PodcastThe Weirdos We Know Who Runs This ParkWant to help the show out and get even more Locations Unknown content! Percy Fawcett was an explorer who is famous for attempting to find a lost city that doesn't exist, and ultimately cutting short his own existence in the process. Still, he's a super interesting dude full of adventure, daring, and traits both good and bad, all of which leads to an unfortunate end of the road in 1925.TranscriptsFor rough transcripts of this episode go to https://www.archpodnet.com/pseudo/150Contact Kinkella Teaches Archaeology (Youtube) Blog: Kinkella Teaches ArchaeologyArchPodNet APN Website: https://www.archpodnet.com APN on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/archpodnet APN on Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/archpodnet APN on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/archpodnet Tee Public StoreAffiliates Motion: https://www.archpodnet.com/motion

Ce qui est bien, c'est que chaque liste correspond vraiment à chaque membre !THOMAS « EL COMANDANTE »Speed racer (The Wachowskis – 2008)Mad Max : Fury road (George Miller – 2015)Dernier Maquis / Les Chants de Mandrin (Rabah Ameur-Zaïmeche – 2008 / 2011)The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans / Au cœur des volcans (Werner Herzog – 2009 / 2023)Balada Triste de Trompeta (Alex de la Iglesia – 2010)The Counselor (Ridley Scott – 2013)Cameraperson (Kirsten Johnson – 2019)Mektoub my love : Canto Uno (Abdellatif Kechiche – 2017)Small Axe – Lovers Rock (Steve McQueen – 2021)Transformers 2 : Revenge of the Fallen / 13 Hours : The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (Michael Bay – 2009 / 2016)GI Joe : Rise of Cobra (Stephen Sommers – 2009)Hypernormalisation (Adam Curtis – 2015)La Loi de la Jungle (Antonin Peretjatko – 2016)Lincoln (Spielberg – 2012)Boyhood / Everybody Wants Some !! This week on On Story, a conversation with acclaimed writer, director, and producer James Gray to discuss not only his artistic process, but how he established himself as one the industry's most talented writer-directors. A true visionary, Gray made his directorial debut with his celebrated film Little Odessa, which earned him nominations for both Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay at the 1994 Independent Spirit Awards. Other esteemed features in Gray's canon include The Yards, starring Joaquin Phoenix, who is in fact a frequent collaborator of Gray's, and We Own the Night, starring Mark Wahlberg, in addition to his films, Two Lovers, The Immigrant, The Lost City of Z, and Ad Astra, all of which set the bar for both screenwriting and direction. Gray's most recent feature, Armageddon Time, is a deeply personal film inspired by Gray's childhood. A reflection on the strength of family, the complexity of friendship, and the realities of class as seen through the eyes of a young Jewish boy growing up in 1980s Queens, the film's star-studded cast includes leading actors Anthony Hopkins, Anne Hathaway, and Jeremy Strong. In addition to speaking with Gray on his process of writing and directing each of his seven critically-acclaimed feature films, AFF was eager to honor Gray with our coveted Bill Wittliff Award for Screenwriting, an annual award presented to leading storytellers within film, television and new media. Gray adds this accolade to his five Palme d'Or nominations, as well as the Silver Lion Award. During our annual Writers Conference, Barbara Morgan sat down with Gray to discuss how he became a pillar of American filmmaking. Ad Astra clips courtesy of Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. Michael's conversation with David Grann, author of "The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon." Original air date 4 March 2009. The book was published on 24 February 2009
As you get older it's a fact that your memory declines. Hormones and proteins that protect and repair brain cells and stimulate neural growth slow down their production as you age, and decreased blood flow to the brain leads to changes in cognitive function. Sometimes I find myself entering a room and wondering what I'm doing there, other times I'll start a sentence on one subject before changing my trousers for a new pair next Saturday. An inevitable consequence of all this mental incapacity is that we lose things, from hire car keys to our minds, so this week's show has us discussing the Top 5 Lost Things. THE LOST CITY OF Z is writer and director James Gray's biography of British explorer Percy Fawcett, sent to the Amazon to find the source of the Verde River in order to resolve a border dispute between Brazil and Bolivia and potentially uncovering evidence of an ancient lost city and civilisation along the way. As his obsession with discovering the city grows, Fawcett's motivations change from a desire to restore his family honour to a need to bloody the nose of the white supremacists at home in an attempt to prove his fellow Europeans wrong about the supposed backwardness of Amazonian natives. Charlie Hunnam is restrained as a man pursuing an irresistible urge at great cost to his family, Robert Pattinson amusingly mumbly as laconic aide-de-camp Henry Costin but it's the relationship with and performance of Sienna Miller as Fawcett's wife Nina which is left to linger in the viewers mind. Patient pacing, painterly compositions and sometimes baffling continuity make this a strong recommend from us. When you've seen ADVENTURE TIME and THE REGULAR SHOW and TWELVE FOREVER and ODDBALLS and any of the other shows in which a brightly rendered cast of humans and anthropomorphised food, objects, animals and mythical creatures follow absurd plots for no apparent reason why not give CUPCAKE & DINO: GENERAL SERVICES a go. We did and it was uninspiring and derivative, despite a couple of solid jokes. Feels like the formula needs changing. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com. It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without a little tradition, so naturally Vanity Fair's Katey Rich makes her annual return to us this week to discuss James Gray's The Lost City of Z. The film had a long pre-production history, including promises of Brad Pitt in the lead, that long positioned it as the film that might … Continue reading "220 – The Lost City of Z (with Katey Rich)"

David Grann, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky about “The Lost City of Z,” recorded in the KPFA studios in 2009. David Grann has become one of America's leading writers of non-fiction. Having written pieces for The New Yorker and New Republic as a staff writer, his first book was titled The Lost City of Z, which was adapted into a film in 2017 and now streams on Amazon Prime. Since that time, he has published three books, The Devil and Sherlock Holmes, Flowers of the Killer Moon – which will become a film when shooting starts next year, directed by Martin Scorcese and starring Leonardo di Caprio and Robert DeNiro, and most recently, The White Darkness, about the British explorer Henry Worsley. The post David Grann: “The Lost City of Z,” 2009 appeared first on KPFA.
‘The Lost City of Z' is a screenplay about the now little-known British explorer Percy Fawcett, who led a remarkable life, searching the Amazon rainforest for the ruins of the lost city at a time when most who ventured into the jungle never returned alive. But the screenplay covers so much more than that, and is primarily concerned with the monumental changes that occurred in the concepts of ‘culture' and ‘civilization' in the early years of the last century, as well as the impact a life like Fawcett's can have on the family back home. We discuss the important themes that the screenplay addresses, and our personal experiences that shape our view of the story. *** Want to comment, get news and join episode discussions?
