Chris Paterson emailed Claire Pedrick:   I wonder if there is a podcast around the title “What can't I bring to supervision?” which could be interesting to explore. My sense is that lots of coaches will have things that would be valuable for them to discuss but they either don't trust their supervisor enough or don't feel they would be allowed to discuss things that might not be directly related to their coaching practice. Of course, this comes down to the contracting between them and their supervisor and I wonder if a conversation which included examples of topics such as grief and loss, forgiveness, caring responsibilities, life events and choices might give coaches more permission to discuss what really matters to them in supervision rather than having to perform in some way.   Listen to find out more!   Resources & Links: Talk to Claire or Chris about coaching supervision The Road Less Travelled by M. More than 141,000 children are in kinship care in England and Wales. According to new research from the charity Kinship, 40% of kinship carers are forced to claim benefits or increase their benefits when they step in to take on the care of a child from a family member. To explain why some kinship carers want the same parental rights as others in a parental role, like an adoptive parent, Clare McDonnell is joined by the CEO of Kinship, Lucy Peake and carer Nash, who took on the permanent care of her sister's children after her sister died.Broadcaster, model and activist Ashley James says she's always been underestimated and often written off as a ‘bimbo'. But now she's reclaiming the word as the title of her new book, which explores many of the judgmental labels used to describe women and their life choices. From 'bossy' to 'mumsy' to 'silly girl', Ashley joined Clare to unpack the impact such words can have on women and girls and why she hopes opening up about her own experiences will inspire others to stop shrinking and shake them off.Team GB snowboarder Mia Brookes gave an amazing performance coming fourth in the women's snowboard big air final at the Winter Olympics in Italy. The 19-year-old had been hoping to become Great Britain's first gold medallist on snow. She went for a backside 1620 trick - featuring four-and-a-half rotations - and landed before she over-rotated and her heel edge caught in the snow. Mia's mum, Vicky Brookes, joined presenter Nuala McGovern on the line from her campervan in Livigno close to the Olympic venue.Deborah Douglas has written a memoir about her experience as a victim turned campaigner in one of the biggest scandals in British medical history. Her story sits at the centre of the case of disgraced breast surgeon Ian Paterson, jailed in 2017 for performing harmful and unnecessary operations on women who believed they were being treated for cancer. An inquiry in 2020 found both NHS and private hospitals missed repeated chances to stop him. Deborah joined Clare to discuss The Cost of Trust.A new exhibition at the Charles Dickens museum celebrates the women who influenced the great Victorian novelist's female characters, social commentary and campaigning to improve the lives of vulnerable women. But how does this sit alongside the other, darker narrative, that Dickens himself was a misogynist who mistreated his own wife? To sort the fact from the fiction, the exhibition curator Kirsty Parsons & the historian Professor Jenny Hartley joined Nuala to discuss.Presenter: Clare McDonnell Producer: Annette Wells

This week Nick talks to Val Hamilton Val initially trained as a teacher, travelling and working abroad in Copenhagen and later in Boston, where she began working with challenging adolescents. On returning to the UK, Val settled in London and transitioned into the private sector. After studying at Sheffield Business School, she became a personal and organisational development consultant in the City, working with major banks, insurance companies and legal firms to address complex people and cultural issues. Nick and Val discus Val's latest book - Pirates, Punters, and Politicians: How the Bank of England Was Founded. Drawing on her background in English literature, organisational development and financial history, Val explains how her doctoral work uncovered surprising connections between dissenting religious communities, the rise of the novel, and the emergence of modern banking. The conversation follows the life of William Paterson — the Scottish dissenter, merchant and adventurer who helped found the world's first central bank. From treasure-hunting voyages and Caribbean trade routes to London's coffee houses and taverns, they explore how risk, persuasion and political manoeuvring combined to turn an unlikely idea into a national institution. Together they unpack the theatre, storytelling and financial necessity that persuaded investors and the Crown to back the scheme, while highlighting the tension between entrepreneurial founders and the establishment figures who ultimately took control. They also reflect on the harsher realities of the period — including slavery, war finance and imperial trade — and consider why Paterson's contribution has often been overlooked despite his central role. Val's Book Choice wasThe Rise of the Novel: Studies in Defoe, Richardson and Fielding by Ian WattRead Val's other bookDaniel Defoe and the Bank of England: The Dark Arts of ProjectorsVal's Music Choice wasMaggie May - Rod StewartThis content is issued by Zeus Capital Limited (“Zeus”) (Incorporated in England & Wales No. 4417845), which is authorised and regulated in the United Kingdom by the Financial Conduct Authority (“FCA”) for designated investment business, (Reg No. 224621) and is a member firm of the London Stock Exchange. John Anderson speaks with Wes Huff and Dan Paterson about the striking cultural shift among younger generations towards a renewed search for meaning, transcendence, and moral grounding. They reflect on disillusionment with secular narratives and the renewed interest in Christianity as a source of lifelong direction and purpose. Huff and Paterson explore the impact of numerous online role models for young men, including Joe Rogan, Jordan Peterson and Andrew Tate. This is a conversation that questions whether modern society can sustain itself without a deeper moral and spiritual foundation. Wes Huff is the Vice President for Apologetics Canada and has participated in public dialogues, debates, and interfaith events on issues of belief and religion around the world. Huff holds a BA in sociology from York University, a Masters of Theological Studies from Tyndale University, and is currently doing a PhD in New Testament at the University of Toronto's Wycliffe College. Dan Paterson is the founder Questioning Christianity. He has experience as a pastor, lecturer, and public speaker, having studied Theology and Apologetics in Australia and at Oxford. His work explores the language of painting through close observation of the natural world, living organisms, and the perception of light. Espejo has exhibited internationally across the UK, Europe, Asia, and the Americas. He was twice a finalist for Jackson's Art Prize and was shortlisted for the John Moores Painting Prize in 2025.In 2025, he undertook a residency at Drumlanrig Castle and was subsequently selected for the Fugger Kunsthof residency in Augsburg for 2026. He is currently preparing two solo exhibitions: one at Union Pacific, London, and another at Sun Gallery, Seoul. In January 2026, he received the Brave Project Award and will be featured in Chapter 5, alongside a solo exhibition at Interval Gallery, London, presented in dialogue with works by Pierre Bonnard.Espejo understands painting as a surface of encounter. His works often place direct references to historical artworks alongside everyday objects or observed scenes, creating a dialogue between lived experience and inherited visual languages. These dualities operate both in his approach to observation and in the process of translation onto the painted surface. Alongside his studio practice, Espejo has developed and led workshops focused on painting, attention and embodied ways of seeing, extending his artistic enquiry into shared, pedagogical contexts.Sebastián's Instagram: @sebaespejovReference links:Adolfo Couve, Melliza (1964)Adolfo Couve: Una lección de pintura by Claudia Campaña (2015)—see cover for painting referencedRon Padgett, Pink Dust (2025)Jim Jarmusch, Paterson (2016)Episode cover art: "Dog Star", Oil, wax, marble dust and pencil on birch wood panel, 50x40cm, 2025. Anteris Technologies CEO Wayne Paterson joined Steve Darling from Proactive to announce that the company has launched a proposed underwritten public offering of $200 million of its common stock, subject to market and other customary conditions. In connection with the offering, Anteris also plans to grant the underwriters a 30-day option to purchase up to an additional $30 million of common stock at the public offering price. Paterson also confirmed that Anteris has entered into a private placement agreement with Medtronic plc, further strengthening the company's balance sheet and strategic positioning. The net proceeds from the public offering, together with existing cash and cash equivalents and the proceeds from the private placement, are expected to support the next phase of the company's growth and the continued execution of its clinical and operational strategy. The company intends to use the funds to advance the ongoing global pivotal trial of its DurAVR® Transcatheter Heart Valve for patients with severe aortic stenosis. The PARADIGM Trial is currently focused on patient recruitment and study execution, and represents a key step toward potential regulatory approval of the DurAVR® THV. In addition, Anteris plans to expand its manufacturing capabilities to support future commercialization. A portion of the proceeds is also expected to fund continued research and development activities at v2vmedtech, inc., while the remaining capital will be allocated to working capital and other general corporate purposes as determined by management from time to time. Anteris Technologies is a global structural heart company dedicated to the design, development, and commercialization of advanced medical devices aimed at restoring healthy heart function. Founded in Australia with a significant operational presence in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the company is science-driven and supported by a multidisciplinary team with deep expertise in structural heart disease. The company's lead product, the DurAVR® THV, was developed in collaboration with leading interventional cardiologists and cardiac surgeons worldwide to treat aortic stenosis, a potentially life-threatening condition caused by narrowing of the aortic valve. Anteris believes the DurAVR® THV has the potential to offer meaningful clinical benefits for patients suffering from this serious condition. He also discussed recent clinical data presented at the London Valve conference, spotlighting a dramatic reduction in patient-prosthetic mismatch (PPM) rates with DurAVR compared to the market leader—3% versus 30%. #proactiveinvestors #anteristechnologiesglobalcorp #asx #avr #nasdaq #avr #PublicOffering #MedTech #StructuralHeart #DurAVR #TranscatheterValve #AorticStenosis #ClinicalTrials #PARADIGMTrial #MedicalDevices #HealthcareInnovation #BiotechNews #Cardiology #HeartHealth #LifeSciences

Former Governor of New York David Paterson joins John Catsimatidis & James Flippin as they substitute for Sid Rosenberg, to touch upon political discourse, highlighting how the terms 'left' and 'right' have evolved over decades. Paterson points out that today's right often holds views similar to those traditionally held by moderate leftists. He discusses extremism on both ends of the political spectrum, the role of government, and local versus state control over issues like zoning. Paterson also addresses rising concerns over anti-Semitism from both the political left and right, emphasizing the irrationality of blaming a particular group for societal issues. You can listen to the full 67-minute episode without ads and support our work at https://www.patreon.com/posts/e113-radical-of-143322722In this episode, we discuss Beverly Silver's pioneering work, Forces of Labour: Workers' Movements and Globalisation Since 1870, a book which was hugely influential on many of us at Working Class History. The book is epic in its breadth (looking at labour unrest around the world and across a long period of time), but also firmly committed to viewing class struggle from the bottom up.But most important about the book is how deeply materialist and methodical it is in how it outlines the concrete conditions that gave space for working-class struggle, and how those struggles forced capital to think of new strategies in order to deal with it. Moreover, in doing so, her book also helps us to think and to strategise about working-class organising today.Listen to the full episode here:E113: Radical Reads – Forces of LabourMore informationBuy Forces of Labour from an independent bookshop (or read it online here)Check out our collection of books about labour movement history in our online shopSee the webpage for this episode at https://workingclasshistory.com/podcast/e113-radical-reads-forces-of-labour/AcknowledgementsThanks to our patreon supporters for making this podcast possible. Auden, invites us into signal boxes, imagines train station bars, and evokes the empty platforms that inspire songs - as he celebrates 200 years of railway inspired poetry with his guests Don Paterson, Carmen Marcus, Bella Hardy and Patrick McGuinness.Don Paterson is a poet and musician. He's the editor of an anthology of train poems called 'Train Songs' (with Sean O'Brien) and described the chapters of his memoir 'Toy Fights' as 'train windows'. The Verb has commissioned Don to write a poem about a station that seems to him particularly unpoetic..Carmen Marcus is a graduate of the 'Verb New Voices' writing scheme. She is a novelist and poet, and for the anniversary of the passenger railway she has been talking to passengers on the Stockton & Darlington line and writing train inspired poems. Carmen brings railway trolls and brand new words for the excitement of train travel to the Verb studio.Patrick McGuinness is British-Belgian writer and poet. He teaches French and Comparative Literature at Oxford. His latest book is a series of essays called 'Ghost Stations' - he explains why the idea of the 'ghost station' has been such a powerful 'engine' for his writing.Bella Hardy is a lover of ballads, a BBC Folk Singer of the Year, and a songwriter. The Verb has asked her to respond to one of the greatest train platform inspired songs of all time - Paul Simon's 'Homeward Bound' . Bella performs a brand new song that celebrates the way waiting for a train can lead artists to come up with some of their best work. You'll also hear the acoustics of a real signal box - part of a soundscape produced by Sheffield folk and electronics duo Polyhymns.Produced by Faith Lawrence
