jarasaseasongi - muzyczne historie

Opowieść o piosence, którą zapewne wszyscy słyszeliście nie raz. Stanowi nieoficjalny hymn Australii. „Waltzing Matilda”, bo tak brzmi jej tytuł została napisana przez prawnika i dziennikarza Banjo Patersona. Spędzał on lato w 1895 roku razem z narzeczoną w prowincjonalnym miasteczku Dagworth. Paterson tekst piosenki sprzedał wydawnictwu Angus i Robertson, a wydawnictwo spółce James Inglis & Co. Spółka sprowadzała do Australii blisko 1,5 miliona funtów herbaty rocznie. Jej znakiem towarowym był „Billy Tea”. A bohater piosenki w pierwszej zwrotce właśnie parzy herbatę wg tej tradycyjnej metody. Nowi właściciele zlecili drobne poprawki tekstu i melodii i wykorzystali piosenkę do promocji swojego towaru. Piosenka wkrótce opanowała całą Australię, a razem z australijskimi żołnierzami, wyruszyła na muzyczny podbój świata. No i dziś Waltzing Matilda słyszał chyba każdy, a piosenka stała się nieoficjalnym hymnem Australii. A tytuł? Nie ma nic wspólnego z tańcem. Pochodzi od niemieckich emigrantów. Niemieccy czeladnicy wędrowali z miejsca na miejsce ucząc się od mistrzów zawodu. Te podróże nazywali auf der walz. Walz to więc takie poróżowanie. A  w zasadzie Billy of Tea. To niewielki, prowizoryczny imbryk do gotowania wody. Do dziś dokonano niezliczonej liczby nagrań Waltzing Matilda. Podobno blisko 1000. Może więcej. Ja dla Was wybrałem wersję zaśpiewaną i nagraną przez Slima Dustiego. Slim Dusty (czyli David Gordon Kirckpatrick) był ikoną australijskiej muzyki country, nagrał ponad 100 płyt był jednym z głównych popularyzatorów gatunku muzycznego „bush ballad”. No i nikt inny tylko on mógł zaśpiewać  Waltzing Matilda na ceremonii zamknięcia igrzysk olimpijskich w Sydnej w 2000 roku. A więc proszę państwa Slim Dusty i Walzting Matilda . Posłuchajcie. Sail Ho   Audycja zawiera utwory: "Waltzing Matilda" w wykonaniu Slima Dusty'ego,  słowa: Banjo Paterson, muzyka: Christina Macpherson

Ian McMillan enjoys the language of the iconic 'Night Mail' poem by W.H. Auden, invites us into signal boxes, imagines train station bars, and evokes the empty platforms that inspire songs - as he celebrates 200 years of railway inspired poetry with his guests Don Paterson, Carmen Marcus, Bella Hardy and Patrick McGuinness.Don Paterson is a poet and musician. He's the editor of an anthology of train poems called 'Train Songs' (with Sean O'Brien) and described the chapters of his memoir 'Toy Fights' as 'train windows'. The Verb has commissioned Don to write a poem about a station that seems to him particularly unpoetic..Carmen Marcus is a graduate of the 'Verb New Voices' writing scheme. She is a novelist and poet, and for the anniversary of the passenger railway she has been talking to passengers on the Stockton & Darlington line and writing train inspired poems. Carmen brings railway trolls and brand new words for the excitement of train travel to the Verb studio.Patrick McGuinness is British-Belgian writer and poet. He teaches French and Comparative Literature at Oxford. His latest book is a series of essays called 'Ghost Stations' - he explains why the idea of the 'ghost station' has been such a powerful 'engine' for his writing.Bella Hardy is a lover of ballads, a BBC Folk Singer of the Year, and a songwriter. The Verb has asked her to respond to one of the greatest train platform inspired songs of all time - Paul Simon's 'Homeward Bound' . Bella performs a brand new song that celebrates the way waiting for a train can lead artists to come up with some of their best work. You'll also hear the acoustics of a real signal box - part of a soundscape produced by Sheffield folk and electronics duo Polyhymns.Produced by Faith Lawrence

In “[M]y ‘case' to work up': William Carlos Williams's Paterson” (William Carlos Williams Review, Volume 41, Number 2, 2024), Walter Scott Peterson argues that as a physician-poet Dr. Williams approaches his poetic material very much as he approaches his patients, and that the form of Paterson in particular is intentionally and actually reminiscent of the various forms taken by the medical case narrative, or “work-up.” This episode concerns the poet and physician William Carlos Williams, whose mother, Raquel Hélène Rose Hoheb Williams, was born and raised in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. This conversation is part of the STEM to STEAM initiative, sponsored by the Teagle Foundation, that links medicine, science, technology and engineering to the sensibilities honed in the humanities—rethinking ways to blend and combine studies in literature, poetry, history, philosophy, and the arts as more central dimensions of technical preparation. The discussion explores the profound connection between medical humanities and poetry, highlighting how their combination enriches our understanding of patient care, fosters empathy, and humanizes the medical experience. Medical humanities is an interdisciplinary field combining arts, literature, philosophy and cultural approaches to the human condition—considering each of these as insights into the emotional and ethical dimensions of healthcare. Poetry can serve as a powerful tool for expressing the complex feelings and narratives that often go unspoken in clinical settings. Blending poetry and the science of healthcare reminds us that medicine is not just a science but also an art, emphasizing compassion, understanding, and the shared human experience at the heart of healing. In this episode of my Style DNA podcast I go on a style journey with the international interior designer Sophie Paterson who is known for creating luxury residential projects across the UK and globally. To my delight, Sophie arrived for the recording wearing a vintage Wakeley cream scuba jersey two piece given to her by her mother in law which she clearly loves and wears on repeat. It was from a collection that I did about 15 years ago and I can honestly say it looks as current today as it did back then. I had never met Sophie before but she came across as humble, approachable and wonderfully focused. She is understated and states that it is “all about the client”. I asked her whether she adapts her style to the client she is visiting… she absolutely does, going so far as saying that she will pick out the most controversial colour in the presentation and wear that. If she is filming one of the properties for YouTube she will dress to match each room so that all the focus is on the interior. If she is meeting a client for the first time she will underplay her look saying that the star of the show is the client, it is all about customer service and she doesn't want to steal their thunder in any way …clever and refreshing… Sophie talks about how “everyone has an age to shine in”…hers being her 40's, however, she understood her silhouette from way before and even going so far as wearing glasses that she didn't need when she was young in business as she wanted to come across as older. I loved the advice she was given by her “very stylish mother in law – don't go smart with everything - if you are going to wear a diamond necklace wear it with a T shirt” … I could not agree more. Sophie is polished and very considered in everything she does be it interiors, beauty or fashion… I really enjoyed our conversation and hope you do too. Thank you @sophiepatersoninteriors for sharing your style journey with me xx

“Don't look around—just run your own race. That's what I'd tell my younger self about writing.”-Melanie Anagnos Melanie Anagnos has worn many hats—waitress, attorney, stay-at-home mom—but her true calling emerged when she pursued her MFA at Sarah Lawrence College. Now, she's making waves in the crime fiction world with her novel Night Swimming, a police procedural set in her hometown of Paterson, New Jersey. In this conversation, Melanie shares what draws her to 1970s crime fiction, the social upheaval that inspires her stories, and how she finally found her voice as a writer. Key Takeaways: Roots in Patterson, NJ: Melanie's novels draw inspiration from her hometown, which also serves as the backdrop for Night Swimming. Journey to Writing: After a career in law, Melanie embraced creative writing later in life, proving it's never too late to start. The 1970s as Creative Muse: Social upheaval, shifting gender roles, and cultural tensions of the decade fuel her storytelling. The Allure of Police Procedurals: She loves the pacing, character focus, and slower-burn suspense of classic crime fiction. Finding Her Voice: Melanie stresses the importance of writing authentically, not trying to “sound like a writer.” On MFA Programs: While her Sarah Lawrence MFA was valuable, she believes what you put in matters more than the credential itself. How can a game transform life-or-death conversations in healthcare settings? A conversation with Criswell Lappin In this compelling episode, design thinker Criswell Lappin reveals how play and games can break down barriers in healthcare, particularly for underserved communities. With over 20 years of experience spanning from Apple to healthcare innovation, Lappin demonstrates that the mechanics of play aren't just for children—they're powerful tools for building trust and sparking meaningful conversations. The St. Joseph's Health Project Lappin's most impactful work involved addressing a critical healthcare challenge in Paterson, New Jersey. Pregnant women weren't asking clinical questions during appointments, creating gaps in care. Through research, his team discovered that women felt more comfortable when they found shared experiences with their healthcare providers. The solution? A simple "Would You Rather?" card game that pairs clinical topics, encouraging both patients and nurses to share stories and find common ground. One powerful example: a 19-year-old patient with a history of sexual abuse initially refused a pelvic exam. After playing the game and bonding over pasta sauce preferences, she opened up and began asking about delivery options she hadn't known existed. The Philosophy Behind Play Lappin's approach stems from two core influences: his childhood collecting baseball cards (visual appeal backed by data) and growing up with a disabled younger brother (fostering empathy and caregiving instincts). He believes play gives people permission to approach problems differently by lowering stakes and reducing formality. Key Design Principles Lappin shared four essential pieces of advice he gives to students, teams, and his own children: Plan on multiple futures - especially in business contexts Focus on what you can control - worrying about uncontrollable variables leads nowhere Aim for 1% better - small weekly improvements compound into transformation Prioritize who you work with over what you do - relationships lead to interesting work Looking Forward The St. Joseph's project, now called "Prefieris" (Spanish for "Would You Rather"), continues to expand as the hospital collects data on its impact. Lappin emphasizes the importance of having internal champions like nurse Stephanie Matthews, noting that such allies are critical for moving innovative projects forward in traditional institutions. This episode illuminates how thoughtful design thinking, combined with the universal language of play, can create profound human connections that ultimately save lives and improve healthcare outcomes for vulnerable communities.

My Journey to Becoming a Franciscan Friar (Fr. Francis Mary Roaldi, CFR) - 9/2/25

9/2/25 - Fr. Francis Mary Roaldi, CFR, a Franciscan Friar of the Renewal serving in the Diocese of Paterson, New Jersey, shares how his ordinary childhood in suburban Buffalo, once filled with simple dreams like Spider-Man and garbage trucks, slowly gave way to a restless search for meaning that ultimately led him to the priesthood. Though raised Catholic, faith wasn't central to his youth, and during college he drifted into depression and uncertainty until a providential conversation with a friend who “knew Jesus like a person” awakened him to the reality of God's love. From there, his journey took many turns: wrestling with relationships, questioning his place in the Church, and working as a caseworker in New York City before encountering the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. In the stillness of a chapel, he heard the life-changing invitation to “be a priest,” a call he embraced after years of prayer and discernment. Now, with over seven years of priesthood and sixteen years as a consecrated religious, Fr. Francis reflects on God's faithful love and the unexpected path that transformed his life and vocation.
