The Kitchen Cabinet

Jay Rayner and his panel of food experts have a grand day out in Masham for this week's episode of The Kitchen Cabinet. Joining Jay are food historian Dr Annie Gray, chef Tim Anderson, and food writers Sumayya Usmani and Melissa Thompson. Whether it be assessing the best ways to use leftover brown bread or how to cook a 3 course meal using beer, Jay and the panel of food fanatics discuss a range of culinary conundrums. And there's the most pressing of questions - is it possible to have too many cookbooks? Also in the programme, Sandra Bell of Wensleydale Creamery joins the team to discuss the origins of the cheese, beloved by Wallace and Gromit. And Jo Theakston of Black Sheep Brewery offers advice on dishes you can pair best with beer. In this episode of the Your Harrogate podcast, Pete Egerton speaks to Harrogate Town defender Toby Sims and also pays a visit to Black Sheep Brewery in Masham, where they've launched a new beer in name of Rob Burrow MBE. Town defender Toby signed a two-year-deal at the end of last season and is loving life at the club. Which is better: Scoring a goal or making a goal-line clearance? Toby also tells us how the news went down with the squad regarding Luke Armstrong wishing to leave and he looks ahead, to a tough match against Forest Green Rovers. On Tuesday (8th August) at the Black Sheep Brewery in Masham, they launched a new beer - "Burrow's Blonde." It's to support Rob Burrow MBE and those, like Rob, living with Motor Neurone Disease. In partnership with the Rob Burrow Racing club, Pete learns more about how the club was set up and speaks to Rob's wife Lindsey. We also hear from Danika Priim who, as a former Leeds Rhinos player, is very much looking forward to the women's Challenge Cup final. Another former Rugby League player, Eorl Crabtree, also speaks to Pete and gives his thoughts on Black Sheep's latest offering...

Host Robin Milling chats with The Lodge At Woodloch sommelier Leslie Britt who likes to think of herself as a 'wine slinger.' She jokes with the guests, giving them the proper phonetic pronunciation, as 'som-el-yay'! Leslie is actually a certified specialist in both wine and spirits. Leslie holds a diploma in wine and spirits from the Wine And Spirits Education Trust which is the pre-requisite for a Master of wine out of London. Leslie believes that wine is an essential part of any dining experience. She hosted a wonderful chocolate and wine pairing – two things that go so well together. Her mantra is wine, chocolate, wine. The presentation featured Eclat chocolate courtesy of Good & Evil featured a blonde chocolate infused with porcini mushroom and thyme which Leslie paired perfectly with Sherry, Muscat, a fruity Chardonnay or a Moscato d'Asti. The milk chocolate pairs beautifully with Merlot, Pinot Noir, Reisling and the dark at 72% cacao is a winner with Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Port. She tells Robin she discovered that her family was part of five generations of brewery from the United Kingdom – Black Sheep Brewery. Leslie admits to Robin her passion for beer. She shares her recipe for food and wine pairings with her preference being Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc "going well with any food." But she doesn't discriminate. She is an “equal opportunity imbiber” as long as it goes with food. Her knowledge of the history of wines and the story behind the label are impressive. Cheers to Leslie Britt!

"Pie Iesu Domine. Dona Eis Requiem." Continuing on their geek streak, Geo & Ben are drinking Holy Grail Ale from Black Sheep Brewery, a golden ale that is the beer of choice for writers of such cult classics as Monty Python and the Holy Grail. If you've never seen the movie, then you'd probably be confused by the intro of this episode, but there's an easy way to fix it – watch the movie, it goes perfectly with beer and elderberries.

And we’re back! Well not really… Jas is flying solo this episode as Nish is on some man flu flex, but the show must go on! Jas has got a beer at the ready and knocked up some last minute chicken to munch while going through some of the latest sports stories in what is the last episode of 2016! That’s right, the guys are taking a little break for the holidays. The boxing writer David Payne joins Jas to go look forward to next year’s David Haye v Tony Bellew bout. After all the shenanigans and entertainment from the press conference—which was hilarious—David gives his take on how he sees this fight going. Will the Hayemaker end this one quickly with Bellew having to step a weight class? David gives his opinion, plus a little word on Conor McGregor landing a boxing licence and a possible date for Anthony Joshua v Wladimir Klitschko. Nish manages to muster up some energy (muppet) and has his ear chewed off with a rant from Jas. According to him, football as a whole on social media can be an absolutely frustrating, annoying and cringey experience, so he gets that all off his chest… bet Nish wishes he never bothered picking up the phone now. And our last guest is our NBA dude Sal Mitha of Sport Eagle TV. In America, basketball on Christmas day is like an institution—the fixtures on this day are the second most important fixtures after opening day. Sal looks ahead to the pick of the games, including his New York Knicks against Jas’ Boston Celtics, plus Golden State Warriors look for revenge against the Cleveland Cavaliers. With Nish going AWOL, Jas had to whackck up some chicken, so he threw some peri peri chicken in to the tomato pasta that his wife had cooked for dinner, real quick fix style. Beer wise, being all festive, he rolled with some Black Sheep Brewery’s Blitzen Ruby Christmas Ale. We’re back on 20th January 2017! Have a wicked Christmas and a Happy New Year!
