Jocelyn Bentley-Prestwich plants peonies, daffodils, and alliums underneath her grape vines, and she has quadrupled the value of every linear foot of her vineyard by doing it.She runs Cluster Flock Farms and Vineyard on twenty-five acres in Husum, Washington, where she grows wine grapes for some of the best winemakers in the Columbia Gorge, raises chickens and ducks and geese, runs flower subscriptions and a flower stand on Highway 141, and books a la carte wedding florals. She is also a queer female farmer who walked into a male-dominated wine industry that did not make room for her, and refused to leave. In this episode: What it looks like to be a female farmer in a male-dominated industry, and the moment Jocelyn started saying "tell me I can't and I'll show you I can" The regenerative companion planting strategy that increased the value of every linear foot of her vineyard by four times The day she stopped calling her farm Blue Elk Farms and renamed it Cluster Flock, and how naming the mess set her free "Side of the road mode," the lesson Jocelyn's mother taught her about letting go of what you cannot control What she would tell the version of herself from ten years ago who did not yet know if she belongedIf you have ever felt behind, or like you do not quite belong, or like you are barely holding it together this season, this is your episode. Share it with another farmer who needs to hear it.Guest BioJocelyn Bentley-Prestwich is the owner of Cluster Flock Farms and Vineyard in Husum, Washington. She has been stewarding twenty-five acres in the Columbia Gorge since 2014 alongside her wife Lacy. Raised by a botanist mother and an organic chemist father, Jocelyn has been in plants her entire professional life. She started in horticulture as a teenager, worked in garden design and at-risk-youth education in the San Francisco Bay Area, and made her way to the Pacific Northwest with a long list of land requirements and a dream of building something diverse and regenerative. Today she grows Tempranillo, Gewurztraminer, Muscat, and Syrah grapes for Gorge winemakers, runs flower subscriptions, an a la carte wedding florals business, and a flower stand on Highway 141. She is a queer farmer, a mother, and a self-described nerd who believes everything is connected.Connect With Jocelyn Website: https://clusterflockfarms.com Instagram: @clusterflockflowersFor Show Notes And More Podcast Details: https://thefloweringfarmhouse.com/the-backyard-bouquet-podcast/Sign up for our newsletter: https://thefloweringfarmhouse.myflodesk.com/backyardbouquetpodcastSave the Date: The Dahlia Design Summit is coming September 13-18. Portland Startup Week 2026 wraps with a quiet news week and a loud everything-else week. Oregon showcased innovation — and got some tough love on the workforce side. A robotic greenhouse out of Portland punched its ticket to the global Startup World Cup finale. And 19 AI startups took the stage at Big Pink for the inaugural Oregon AI Accelerator demo day — which the organizers say is the first of at least ten.Inside this one: Agility's Jonathan Hurst delivers some hard truths about Oregon talent at the Oregon Innovation Showcase. Diane Fraiman of Voyager Capital reminds us we have done this before and can do it again. Canopii — David Ashton's autonomous robotic greenhouse — wins the inaugural Startup World Cup Portland Regional and heads to San Francisco in November to compete for $1 million. This episode should have happened long ago. Alan is really doing some real critical thing in a good way for the entire distilling community. This conversation was as epic as i knew it would be. We talked of the distilling world, making good products. and the bourbon glut. So much we got into hope you enjoy. Be BlessedOldhomesteaddc.comhttps://www.thealchemistcabinet.com/Badmotivatorbarrels.com/shop/?aff=3https://www.instagram.com/zsmithwhiskeyandmixology?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==At Old Homestead Distilling Co., we're a pot still distillery focused on heirloom corn, Indiana-grown grains, unique yeast strains, and small-batch spirits inspired by history. We offer tastings, cocktails on tap, and rotating spirit slushies.Old Homestead Distilling Company in Indiana celebrates a rich history of local distilling that dates back to homesteading times when each homestead proudly operated its own still. Our approach is deeply rooted in this heritage, blending traditional batch distillation methods with contemporary techniques. We source our grains, fruits, botanicals, and yeast locally, embracing Indiana's agricultural richness to craft spirits that reflect our state's distinct flavors.Initially, our distillery will focus on producing clear spirits. Our offerings will include Agave Spirits, Gins, and traditionally-made Absinthe, alongside a unique creation we call "Sunshine Spirits." This is a type of moonshine, made from malted and roasted sunflower mash, offering a fresh twist on an old favorite. Later we will offer Bourbons, Ryes, traditional Whiskeys, and Apple Brandy.Alan Bishop is a self-taught distiller and historian of Southern Indiana's deep distilling heritage. He grew up alongside generations of tobacco farmers and both legal and illicit distillers. Alan began his own education in earnest at the age of 15 on a pot still he built with the help of his father and grandfather. By his mid-twenties, Alan had pursued home distillation to its pinnacle and the time had come to take the next step.Alan began distilling professionally at Copper and Kings in Louisville, KY, where he oversaw the cultivation of Chenin Blanc, Colombard, and Muscat grapes. He was responsible for the production of apple brandy and absinthe, and also the blending of products for bottling. After two years at Copper and Kings, Alan became Head Distiller at Spirits of French Lick in French Lick, Indiana where his focus was on creating spirits with a respect to historical styles of distillation and a grain-forward approach. In April 2024, Alan left Spirits of French Lick to take on the role of Head Alchemist at Old Homestead Distilling Co in Indiana, helping to build the distillery from the ground up. Old Homestead Distilling Co will carry on Alan's dedication to merging traditional methods with contemporary techniques, incorporating locally-sourced ingredients including wild yeast.Alan collaborates with the Mount Vernon Distilling Program and frequently volunteers at the Historic Locust Grove Farm Distillery. Currently, he is working with the Indiana DNR to re-establish the historic distillery at Spring Mill State Park in Lawrence County, Indiana. He also is an established seed cultivator, focusing on the development of agricultural/horticultural varietals for distilling. In addition, Alan provides professional distillery consultation services through his company, Alchemy in Action.Alan loves to write about the history of the Southern Indiana Distilling Complex. You can read his research on the lives, individual methods, and stories of several Hoosier Distillers on his blog, alchemistcabinet.wordpress.com. He is the author of two books on distillation, The Alchemist Cabinet vol 1. Philosophy and The Alchemist Cabinet Vol.2: The Black Forest Method.Alan hosts the Distillers Talk podcast, One Piece at a Time Distilling Institute on Youtube and If You Have Ghosts You Have Everything podcast.

You can send a text, include contact info to get a response. You probably know that by the middle of the 19th century, the  British dominated India.  The British introduced railroads and electricity, public health and infrastructure, and a population boom began.  By the end  Victoria became the Empress.  But before the French Revolution the British footprint in India was relatively small.  It was during the revolutionary wars and the Napoleonic wars that British control and domination greatly expanded, from early footholds in Bengal and Madras. The China trade was responsible of one six of British state revenue during this period so it was of vital importance.  Also, tea had an interesting property, the people who drank it did not need to dedicate so much grain to small beer production, allowing tea to change the supply and demand equation for grain, during a critical period. There is also the argument that the Chinese authorities contributed to the opium trade by not allowing any legal trade.  The drain of silver into the immensity of China is a problem that was going to be solved, whenever the right product was found. The Tokugawa were prompted to make serious reforms by embarrassments  caused by young Pellew and the Russian under Rezanhov. The Vietnam story of Gia Long and Bishop Pigneau is probably the most interesting.Oman and Muscat reinforce the idea of the struggle between imperialism and the pursuit of profits for the East India company.  imperialism is expensive.  The company lost money, and doubled its debt during one of the periods we are discussing.

FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageA Berlin classroom TV in 1989 flickers back to life as we open with a personal “Liberty Line” on what happens when people lose their fear—and why that matters for the courage we see across Iran today. From that human spark, we move straight into the hard edges of policy: why the United States chose to act, why the timeline narrowed, and how nuclear math—not rhetoric—drove urgency. We unpack Mark Halperin's clear framing of continuity across administrations: every recent president drew the same red line against an Iranian nuclear weapon. Then we pressure-test the “why now” with Steve Witkoff's firsthand accounts from Muscat and Geneva: opening claims of an “inalienable right” to enrich, a flat rejection of a decade of prepaid civilian fuel, pride in roughly 460 kilograms at 60% enrichment, and a refusal to share a take-home draft. With enrichment able to jump from 60% to weapons grade in about a week, listeners get a precise view of stockpiles, centrifuge capacity, and the shrinking window for peaceful outcomes.Next, we cross to the Strait of Hormuz and bust a headline myth. A seasoned mariner and maritime scholar walks us through live AIS maps and anchorages to show why tankers paused: war risk insurance, not an impenetrable military blockade. We explain PI and hull coverage, additional war risk endorsements, premium spikes after strikes, and the knock-on effects for East Asia's energy supply. We also weigh reports of U.S. insurance backstops and potential escorts—plus the massive liability questions that come with them.Along the way, we highlight a deeper shift: niche digital experts on platforms like YouTube and podcasts are outpacing legacy media on speed, specificity, and verification. That matters when 20% of global oil depends on decisions made by shipowners, underwriters, and captains watching the same data you can pull on your phone.Hit play to get a concise, sourced breakdown of why war and why now, what enrichment levels really signal, and how the world's most vital oil lane can stall for financial reasons more than firepower. If this helped you see the story more clearly, please follow, rate, and share the show with a friend who loves straight facts and smart context. What part of the analysis changed how you see the crisis?Key Points from the Episode:• memory of the Berlin Wall and fear breaking• rising courage among Iranians and regime fragility• bipartisan U.S. red line against an Iranian nuclear weapon• Halperin's framing of why and why now• Witkoff's details on failed enrichment talks and timelines• enrichment levels, breakout speed, and stockpile math• digital media's advantage over legacy outlets• Strait of Hormuz traffic, insurance risk, and escorts• practical resources for tracking marine trafficOther resources: Want to leave a review?

The week started great — Silicon Forest Tech Summit lineup, Agility's rebrand, SBIR grants returning, Portland Dining Month — and then Oregon's QSBS legislation landed on the governor's desk. Let's break down what qualified small business stock exclusion meant for Oregon founders and investors, why removing it hurts the people who can least afford it, and what (if anything) you can do about it. //The Wire//2300Z March 4, 2026// //ROUTINE// //BLUF: GULF WAR CONTINUES AS ALLIED RADAR INSTALLATIONS TARGETED BY IRANIAN FORCES. US NAVY SINKS IRANIAN FRIGATE OFF COAST OF SRI LANKA.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE-----  -International Events-Middle East: The large-scale bombing of targets within Iran continues, with hundreds of bombs being dropped day and night. Around the region, overnight satellite imagery confirmed that Iranian forces have successfully struck multiple American Air Defense installations. Concerning American battle damage, the following radar arrays have been damaged or destroyed since the conflict began.Qatar: A/N FPS-132 Block 5 array - Hit, unknown damage. Kuwait: 3x unknown radomes destroyed. Bahrain: 2x AN/GSC-52B radomes destroyed. UAE: THAAD battery at Al-Ruwais confirmed struck, damage unknown. Saudi Arabia: A/N TPY-2 radar site (used with the THAAD system) struck at Prince Sultan Airbase. Jordan: THAAD battery at Muwaffaq Salti Airbase possibly struck, unknown damage.Analyst Comment: These radar arrays are not tiny fire-control systems mounted on a HMMWV, these are major strategic assets for air defense throughout the hemisphere, not just the Middle East. The FPS-132 alone costs over a billion dollars and there are only six of these sites in the entire world. Similarly, there are only nine THAAD batteries in existence globally, and the Iranians just hit one (possibly two) of them with a munition that cost about $30k each.Strait of Hormuz: The war on the high seas continues as multiple commercial vessels have been struck by drones overnight. The UK Maritime Trade Operations center has reported a total of four commercial vessels being hit with unknown munitions over the past 24 hours, sustaining unknown damage. Two container ships, a BCC, and a tanker vessel were all hit or targeted by unknown munitions.Analyst Comment: Merchant traffic within the Strait is mostly at a standstill, as nobody wants to run the the gauntlet and risk hundreds of millions of dollars if something goes wrong. At this present time, drone and missile attacks are effective enough to prevent any large merchant vessel from transiting the waterway.Turkey: This morning the Turkish Defense Ministry stated that an Iranian ballistic missile was shot down in their nation. The missile was shot down by a US Navy vessel in the Eastern med, and the debris landed near the town of Dörtyol in the southeastern region of the country.Lebanon: The Israeli ground invasion continues, with the IDF ordering the evacuation of Lebanese citizens to north of the Litani River. Roughly 15% of the land mass of Lebanon has been ordered to evacuate by Israel, as the IDF continues pushing north.Indian Ocean: This morning the US Navy torpedoed an Iranian frigate off the coast of Sri Lanka. The IRIS DENA was sunk by an American submarine with the crew abandoning ship overnight. The Sri Lankan Navy has conducted rescue operations of about 30 survivors, with about half of the crew remaining missing.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Regarding the evacuations of Americans from the Middle East, so far the situation is complicated. The US State Department has provided emergency phone numbers for Americans stranded overseas to call, but reports are mixed regarding Americans actually being evacuated. Commercial flights remain sporadic, and most Americans stranded in the region are being told to sit tight until flights are available. Airspace closures remain throughout the entire region, and most airlines are attempting to fly out whenever they can. Dubai is the world's busiest airport, and so far it's been averaging a few dozen flights in and out each day, when previously the average was over a thousand flights per day. The smaller airport in Muscat, Oman is the next-closest hub from which evacuati
