As broadcast August 25, 2021 with plenty of extra streets to explore for you podcast adventurers.  We start the show marking this date in 1998 when Ms. Lauryn Hill's iconic solo debut dropped.  The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill still remains one of the most innovative, defiant, and beautiful LP's in the history of hip-hop, and we talk a bit about the aftermath as well to start the show.  For tonight though, it's all about Australia's "Garden City" of Melbourne, one of the world's most scorching hot music cities that artists of all different styles call home from Nick Cave to Hiatus Kaiyote to Sampa The Great, and Lizz Kalo joins us to explore what we can for another edition of our Round Trip Wednesdays.#feelthegravityPart I (00:00)Ms. Lauryn Hill – Every Ghetto, Every CityThe Cactus Channel feat Chet Faker – Kill The DoubtSnooch Dodd & The Pro-teens – No One Understands Me (I'm OG)Emma Donovan & The Putbacks – Yarian MitjiDufresne – Pick Up/Galaxy Hiatus Kaiyote - Atari Part II (37:21)Courtney Barnett – Sunday Roast Courtney Barnett – Small TalkRolling Blackouts Coastal Fever – CameoCash Savage & The Last Drinks – Rat-a-tat-tatLoose Tooth – Keep OnSampa The Great – FreedomSampa The Great – Final Form Part III (69:38)Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Waiting for YouAnita Lane - The World's A GirlLaura Jean - Girls on the TVBlake Scott - Bullfloat ZenBANANAGUN - Do YeahBananagun - Out of ReachPart IV (103:41)BLUE KING BROWN - ALL NATIONSKarate Boogaloo feat Danielle Ponder - Little Bit30/70 - The Strut30/70 feat Alex Albrecht - Breaking TenseLulilee - DiveUhm Jung Hwa - Ending Credits

Seja talks to her guest Ngaiire about surviving a volcanic eruption in Papua New Guinea as a child, how Australian life differs to PNG life, and how she started to love singing. She tells Seja about studying jazz, singing with Blue King Brown, and her mother’s influence on how she conducts herself creatively and personally. They chat about how writing a happy song is hard, getting a live show together and working in the gaps of parenting. Ngaiire’s strange show experience is illustrated by Ben Ely (Regurgitator). Rebecca Langley is an Australian woman who has become involved as an ally in the movement for freedom in West Papua. Recently, she has been a supporter in the Let's Talk About West Papua campaign that has been launched in Australia, which aims to address the ways in which Australia supports Indonesian occupation of West Papua, including funding, arming and training the security forces.  She talks here about how she became involved in this community, inspired by the music of Blue King Brown, the activism of Izzy Brown, the 43 West Papuans who came to Australia by outrigger canoe, and the Freedom Flotilla.  It's problematic that we are two white Australians taking up space to talk about the oppression facing Indigenous people. Rebecca and I are both uncomfortable about that.  There were particular reasons at the time why it wasn't possible to talk to a West Papuan (including time restraints), and I decided I would rather talk to somebody, given the timing of the campaign addressing human rights violations, even if I couldn't talk to a West Papuan woman.

Dawn Penn's earliest recordings were composed and written by Dawn Penn around 1966 using session musicians. In 1967 she recorded the rocksteady single, "You Don't Love Me" produced by Coxsone Dodd at Studio One.[1] She also recorded "Why Did You Leave" at Studio One, "Broke My Heart" for Bunny Lee, "I Let You Go Boy" and covers of "To Sir with Love" and "Here Comes the Sun".By 1970 Penn had left the music industry and had moved to the Virgin Islands. In 1987, however, she returned to Jamaica and to music. In the summer of 1992 she was invited to appear on stage at a Studio One anniversary show, where she performed the song "You Don't Love Me" with Steely & Clevie as backing musicians. The performance was a success, and she returned to the recording studio to re-record the song for the tribute album Steely & Clevie Play Studio One Vintage. It was released as the single "You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)" over a year later, reaching the charts in the U.S. and Europe, plus hitting #1 in her native Jamaica, and making #3 in the UK Singles Chart. Penn's next album, No, No, No, was released on Big Beat Records in 1994. Subsequently, "You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)" has been sampled and covered by the artists Kano, Hexstatic, Jae Millz, Ghostface Killah, Mims, Eve featuring Stephen Marley and Damian Jr. Gong Marley. Their versions were all renamed as "No, No, No", bar Ghostface's, which was named "New Splash". The song was performed by Blue King Brown on the Australian youth radio network Triple J programme "Like a Version" 2006. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawn_Penn
