Dizzy Gillespie - A Night In Tunesia Erika de Casier - Test It. John Glacier - Emotions. August 11, 2023 marks 50 years to the day since hip-hop was born. It's a genre, a scene, a philosophy that has changed the world; not just in music, but in culture, communication, and how we see ourselves. Over the years I've had the great pleasure of chatting with a ton of hip-hop legends, so I'm dusting off the crate and digging into Take 5's past to share some of my favourites on this big anniversary. You'll travel to Queens with Mike D, hear Neneh Cherry shout out a pioneer in the game, and witness a young Sampa the Great talk about her hero. Ice Cube will tell you about when rap said something more, and Common will find it's beautiful rallying power. Long live hip-hop. 50 years young, it changed everything, it gave so many a voice, and it continues to morph, empower, and bounce us into the future. This year, 2023, marks the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. On August 11, 1973, a party went down in New York City. DJ Kool Herc was there, and he'd been playing around with a technique where he'd play the break from one record, then another, looping them and creating something new. On this night in the Bronx, b-boys and girls danced, then Herc and his friend Coke La Rock started speaking, rhyming over the music. Hip-hop was born. The foundations of a sound and scene that would change the world are being celebrated throughout this year, including right here on the Take 5. Across many years I've had the great pleasure in chatting with lots of hip-hop legends and hear them chat about their fandom too. It was back in 2016 when I first met Sampa the Great, and asked her to Take 5. And given this auspicious anniversary, I thought it'd be fun to dig into the archives, and house it here on the podcast for the first time. A lot can happen in 7 years. When I met Sampa, she'd just released her first mixtape. She'd gotten a heap of attention when handpicked by Kendrick Lamar to support his arena shows in Australia. And her future as a multi award winning artist who would not mince words, who would enliven Zamrock for a new generation, and become one of the most talked about artists of our time… it was all yet to come. Thandiswa Mazwai - Ndiyahamba (I'm Leaving) Lauryn Hill – To Zion Nina Simone – Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood 2pac – Changes Chance The Rapper – Wonderful Everyday

Sampa the Great, Thandiswa Mazwai, Emmanuel Jagari Chanda and Mag44 discuss music standing the test of time, African music, and the new generation of musicians. Sampa the Great was born in Ndola in Zambia and became interested in music from a young age, writing poems and singing from the age of 9, spending time in both Zambia and Botswana. She released her first mixtape in 2015 whilst at university in Australia, and created a sound influenced by everything from classic hip-hop to Zamrock. Her latest album, As Above So Below, was released last September and came about after returning home to Zambia during the early days of the pandemic. Thandiswa Mazwai is one of the most influential South African musicians around today. She has been at the forefront of change in South African music since the late 90s with her politically-conscious lyrics and stunning vocals, both as a solo artist and lead singer of ground-breaking trio Bongo Maffin. Emmanuel Jagari Chanda is a founding member of the Zambian rock genre known as Zamrock, which blends rock with funk and African rhythms. He was the leader of the band Witch (We Intend to Cause Havoc) who were the first band to record a commercial record in Zambia in the 1970s. Magnus Mando, AKA Mag44, is a rapper and music producer who has expanded Zambia's musical horizons. He started singing and rapping in church, before writing his own lyrics which gave birth to his career. He also co-produced Sampa the Great's latest LP.

Zambian singer Sampa The Great and her band have consistently broken barriers as the first Zambian performers at Lollapalooza, Coachella and, most recently, ‘The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.' Currently on tour in support of the deluxe version of her 2022 album ‘As Above, So Below,' Sampa called in from the road to chat with Vocalo's Nudia Hernandez on the air before her Chicago show at Thalia Hall on June 14. They discussed the album, touring, her Zamrock roots, meeting Michelle Obama and having a song featured in a trailer for ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.' This interview aired on Vocalo Radio 91.1 FM during Nudia In the Afternoons on Wednesday, June 14. It was edited and produced by Nudia Hernandez and Morgan Ciocca. Keep up with Sampa The Great on Instagram @sampa_the_great.

Footage from last month's Invasion Day rallies around Australia featured speakers urging those gathered to vote ‘No' in the promised Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum expected later this year. Most Australians would think the vast majority of First Nations people would support a ‘Yes' vote – but that's not necessarily the case. In this two-part special, we speak to advocates from both sides of the debate so we can better understand what's at stake when we eventually get our chance to vote in the referendum. In this episode, we hear from a proud Bundjalung woman and human rights advocate, Vanessa Turnbull Roberts, about why she's opposing the voice. This episode is part two of The Soul of Music—Overheard's four-part series focusing on music, exploration, and Black history. Our guest this week is Sampa The Great, a Zambian-born rapper, singer, and songwriter. Sampa The Great is a songwriter, rapper, and singer from Zambia. She was based in Australia for years, but came back to Zambia in 2020, shortly before the pandemic hit. When she couldn't travel, she decided to make her next album there in Lusaka. The album is called As Above, So Below, and it was produced by Mag44. In this episode, Sampa the Great and Mag44 break down the closing song "Let Me Be Great," which features vocals from legendary West African singer Angélique Kidjo, winner of 5 Grammys and one of TIME's Most Influential People. The Pride Of Queanbeyan returns to The Betoota Advocate Podcast this week to discuss the rise of Australian Hip Hop over the last three years. It's been roughly that long since we last spoke to him and Hauie has pivoted from artist to pioneer. From OneFour to Sampa The Great, to The Kid Laroi, he was there in the studio before anyone knew their names. Hau has this week published his memoir, titled KING, which is the Tongan translation of his own name - and also a metaphor for his selfless contributions to hip hop in this country.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
WITCH - "Waile" a 2022 single on Desert Daze/Partisan. It's been almost 40 years since WITCH (which stands for "We Intend To Cause Havoc") caused some havoc. The Zambia-based band were early adopters of the "Zamrock" sound, a combination of traditional African music with psychedelic rock, releasing seven albums back in the '70s and '80s. After Zambia-born hip-hop artist Sampa The Great featured them on her latest LP As Above, So Below, WITCH decided to reconvene, releasing the single "Waile." "'Waile' was one of the songs that I brought to the WITCH when I joined in 1978," explained keyboardist Patrick Mwondela via a press release. "While it was played live often back in the day, it was never recorded until the new formation of the band picked it up 43 years later during a rehearsal on an island in Kenya, where the band embraced it and made it their own. A few months after that, they gave it a new lease of life by recording it in Lusaka's legendary DB Studios. Sang in my native language Luvale, the subject matter is a nostalgic wailing for home of ancient African tribes that would eventually settle in Zambia." "As young, upcoming artists, we aim to be the examples we saw, but as you grow in your artistry, you realize that example was only there to show you you could do it. Now it's time for you to take that example and interpret it into who you are. So, the less I tried to be like Lauryn [Hill], the more I could be Sampa. And the more I could see what I love, the stories I love to tell, the music I grew up on and love sharing, and the more I could solidify myself as an artist," says the Zambia-born Botswana-raised poet and rapper Sampa The Great, reflecting on her creative path, in episode 79 of LSQ. "And so that journey has continued and grown within the past six years, and I think it's taken a really beautiful turn in relocating back home. Because now the context isn't me trying to represent different groups of people in a country I wasn't raised in, to bring people something different than what's shown on the mainstream. You're bringing African artists to the mainstream in a country like Australia, that's huge work, and I know it was a huge weight for me, even though we broke a lot of walls. I realize it took a huge toll on me and it was a huge weight, that, when I relocated back home [to Zambia], that full-circle moment of being in a place where the dream actually started forced me to go back to the mindset of the kid who dreamt it, and how happy I was to express the music and share music, in general, without the opinions or weight of anything else, and really forced me to take a look into representing Sampa for a change, versus everybody else. I mean, everybody else didn't even ask me to represent them, if we're being honest. And just taking a chance to look at who I am outside of my music, my own happiness, and making sure that I actually love what I do. And those all are important ingredients to the world of self-discovery, and just being transparent with myself, and aiming to be my freest self are some of the thought processes that went into As Above, So Below." Sampa The Great's awesome new sophomore studio album, As Above, So Below, is out now. Tickets to her upcoming European headlining tour are available HERE.

A compelling voice in global hip-hop, Sampa The Great lived up to her moniker on MBE recently. In the last couple of years, the Zambian-born, Botswana-raised poet returned to Zambia where she dug deep to find the strength she needed from her upbringing to pour into her work. “Never Forget” is an ode to the socially prolific genre of Zamrock.

Sampa the Great - Lane (feat. Denzel Curry) - a 2022 single on Loma Vista. Today's Song of the Day finds Zambian-born, Botswana-raised artist Sampa The Great taking up some well-deserved space, alongside guest vocalist and fellow rapper Denzel Curry. “We're not going to stay in one lane, we're going to create multiple ones,” she said in a press statement. “My truest self encourages me to explore different lanes, and go beyond what I think I know of myself.” She adds that the song is “about expressing the full range of who you are without being boxed by anyone else's definitions of you. Connecting to your younger self means connecting to your truest self, and that truest self is not confined by any labels and any boxes. ‘Lane' is about breaking those boxes, and staying true to yourself.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This is a talk that's been in the making for quite a while and the amount of joy I have in getting to share this with you is insurmountable. Sampa The Great is a singer-songwriter, poet, and rapper from Zambia and Botswana who's fiercely unapologetic about what she stands for. A major touchstone of her values is an unwavering love for family, friendship, and culture, but another key focus is a steadfast acceptance of who she is and where she's going. For years now she's been praised by outlets like NPR, The Fader, Noisey, NME, Complex, and at this point pretty much the whole fucking world agrees: Sampa the Great is an unbelievable talent. And yet, it still feels like things are only getting started for Sampa, which is what we delve into within today's podcast. We chat about her return to Africa after years in Australia, the differences between creating music about your home vs. while you're actually there, her now-legendary performance of Final Form at the ARIAS (aka the Australian equivalent of the Grammy's), and so much more.
