Only Three Lads: Top 5 Albums of 1972 - with garage pop band The Wesleys

This week, we crank the wayback machine to 1972, a year filled with political turmoil, social unrest, and a whole lotta groovy, life affirming, socially conscious, groundbreaking music that cut across multiple genres and geographic boundaries. With possibly our most eclectic batch of lists yet, we cover a good cross section of what 1972 had to offer. Joining us on this journey are guitarist/vocalist Henry Girard and drummer/vocalist Pablo Garcia from Montreal garage-pop provocateurs The Wesleys, who have just released their highly anticipated Self-Titled debut LP on Little Village Records. The debut album is a dynamic exploration that ventures into a sonic landscape that transcends conventional boundaries, blending elements of the rock, power pop, indie, and alternative genres. The Wesleys embrace their DIY ethos, channeling their creativity into music that feels authentic and natural, a reflection of their shared passion and unwavering dedication. The Wesleys craft melodic rock n' roll songs that resonate with both heart and adrenaline, and will surely appeal to fans of The Clean, The Replacements, Teenage Fanclub, Pixies, The Shins, or Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever. Plus: Get the inside scoop on the awesome Montreal scene! Teletubbies on acid! Trouble at the border! Trudeau cuts off the band's wifi! Morgan Freeman! Hockey! Capes! Clam pizza! Welcome to Roadcase!!  We're psyched to have Fran Keaney of Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever for this special episode. This amazing band from Australia just released their new album, Endless Rooms, in May of this year, and Fran and the band were in the midst of their North American tour back at the end of the summer when Josh caught up with Fran in an early AM interview from Fran's hotel in Brooklyn the day of their show at Music Hall of Williamsburg that evening. Known for their expansive soundscapes and "guitar army" of sound, these bandmates had been playing in various iterations since the mid 2000s, and once they got picked up by the SubPop label in 2018, they simply took off. Touring globally and bringing their music to various corners of the world has brought a new level of gratitude and appreciation for what their music means to their multitude of fans worldwide. From humble beginnings, Fran explains how Rolling Blackouts C.F. continue to bring the energy and a special level of joy into the post-Pandemic world. So hop aboard the Roadcase bus for this special interview with Fran Keaney. As broadcast April 12, 2022 with plenty of indie healing for your podcast experience.  Tonight we start the show marking this date in 2015 at Coachella, where a rather overenthusiastic Florence Welch dove off the stage and broke her ankle.  However, to her infinite credit, she did perform the rest of the tour although bound to a chair, which most artists would not do.  This evening also marked Kat Bass taking over the reigns of our Under The Radar indie weekly, with choice selections for the majority of the gig.  Cuts from Wet Leg, POND, and Maggie Rogers were the highlights, but there's so much more inside if you take the safe dive with us.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Florence + The Machine – My LoveRolling Blackouts Coastal Fever – My EchoMaggie Rogers – That's Where I AmWallice – 90s American SuperstarSOAK – purgatoryTOPS – Perfected StepsPart II (36:26)almost monday - sunburn Will Joseph Cook - Little MissAlexander 23 - CrashThe Regrettes - Nowhere Yot Club - u dont kno meGracie Abrams - Block me outPart III (64:50)Chloe Moriondo - nice pupVance Joy - ClarityBarrie - QuarrySevdaliza - High AloneBLUE ROOM - hope everything finds their colorLizzy McAlpine ft. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - "The Way It Shatters" from the 2022 album Endless Rooms on Sub Pop. In early February, Australian rockers Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever announced their third studio album, Endless Rooms, due out May 6 via Ivy League/Sub Pop. Following up 2020's acclaimed Sideways to New Italy, the record is described by the band as “almost an anti-concept album,” with the title reflecting “our love of creating worlds in our songs. We treat each of them as a bare room to be built up with infinite possibilities.” The first room to be shared by Rolling Blackouts C.F. and today's Song of the Day is “The Way It Shatters.” Automatically, it's clear that the extra time the band had during lockdown to work on their new record has paid off because the song is an expansive new step. Adding synth for the first time into their usual jangle-rock, the song is blistering but also has darker lyrical undertones, dealing with the human race and our various places within it.  The band had this to say about the song: “It's about how ending up in your particular situation in life is the result of absolute randomness. If you happen to be born into wealthy Australia or happen to be born into a war zone in Syria. That's just the way it shatters. So it's when this good luck is mistaken for a sense of pride in one's self or their country they become confused and deluded about what's important. It's when those on the other side of the luck scale are completely othered and considered not worthy.” The song comes with video by Nick Mckk, who also worked with RBCF on the videos for “Sideways To New Italy,” “Cameo,” “Cars In Space,” and “She's There.” He had this to say about the video: “The new album has a night time feeling, so we wanted to explore shooting the whole thing from sundown. Fran [Keaney, vocals/guitar] had the idea of revisiting memories, of resetting groundhog day style, but each time we come back the world is a little different. The attraction of light works as a narrative device, coaxing Joe into this house of memories, and back out again.” Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever are, at long last, embarking on an international tour this summer, with dates in the US starting in August. Catch them in Seattle on August 18th at Neumos. Watch the video for “The Way It Shatters” at the link below. There are some bands that just sound like summer. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, are one of them. Those jangly guitars, the three part harmonies… pressing play on their songs sends me straight to the beach, to balmy nights and road trips with friends. We're on the cusp of summer right now but given 2020's shitshow of a year I figured we may as well skip ahead to that happy place. So I asked Tom from the band to Take 5 with his “songs of summer”. Whether it's a sound, or a memory, he transported us to dance festivals, and family holidays, to rolling waves and Australian classics. Like eating an ice-cream, there's no way you can be sad listening to these songs. Sometime around 2011, the park lost its small trees, leaving only one surviving tree and four other square patches of grass amidst the concrete where other trees used to stand. Even more depressing, there are now 4x4 wooden posts in the patches of grass with a small Parks Department logo attached, marking where trees used to be planted as far back as the 1950s. Við heyrum í þeirri sveit og af plötunni þeirra sem heitir Anthem of the Peaceful Army. Við heyrum svo í Dúkkulísunum Erlu og Grétu en Dúkkulísurnar voru að senda frá sér zex laga jólaplötu með þremur frumsömdum lögum og svo lögum eftir Raveonettes, Pretenders og Tom Petty.
