Reggae legend King Kong, also known as Dennis Thomas, emerged in the early 1980s Jamaican music scene alongside other iconic artists like Tenor Saw and Nitty Gritty. His talent was quickly recognized by the legendary producer King Tubby, who brought him on board to record several singles for the Firehouse label, including "Step On Dem Corn," "Aids," and "Babylon."As digital music began to reshape the soundscape in 1985, King Kong collaborated with Anthony Red Rose on the hit song "Two Big Bull Ina One Pen." He later joined forces with producer King Jammy, churning out successive hits like "Legal We Legal," "Trouble Again," and "Mix Up" between 1985 and 1986. King Kong's versatility was further showcased during this period through his work with other labels including Black Scorpio, Bunny Lee, and Prince Jazzbo. In the late 1980s, King Kong's career took him beyond Jamaica to the United States and Canada, where he established his own label, Conscious Music.King Kong continued to make his mark in the late 1980s with a tribute song, "He Was A Friend," dedicated to the late reggae artist Tenor Saw. He then set his sights on new horizons, traveling to London in the early 1990s. There, he collaborated with several prominent figures in the reggae scene, including Mafia & Fluxy, Fashion Records, and Gussie P. He also linked up with the New York-based label Massive B.King Kong's creative spark remained evident in 1990 when he recorded a dubplate, a custom-made reggae record, titled "Call Mr. Madden." While initially unreleased, the song's potential was undeniable. Two years later, producer Bobby Konders decided to share "Call Mr. Madden" with the world, and it became a dancehall hit. Interestingly, the Fugees would later draw inspiration from this title for their smash hit "Fu-Gee-La" released in 1996.Despite these successes, King Kong's reggae career maintained a sporadic presence on the global stage.Reggae Reignited: Later Years and Continued SuccessAfter facing legal troubles in the mid-1990s, King Kong returned to Jamaica and reconnected with producer King Jammy, releasing tracks like "Seize All Guns" and "Break Down The Walls." However, it was the New York label Massive B who truly reignited his artistic fire. Collaborations with them produced inspirational songs like "Jah Is My Best Friend," "Earth Is The Lord," and "I Feel A Joy."King Kong's adventurous spirit then led him to Ethiopia in 2007. This new chapter culminated in the 2012 release of his 10th album, "Ethiopian Dream," a collaboration with the Dutch label King Shiloh. Singles like "Sweet Rub A Dub" and a cover of "Door Peeper" kept the momentum going. In 2017, he dropped an EP titled "In The Old Capital" featuring five tracks and their dub versions, produced by Old Capital Records.King Kong's artistic wellspring continued to flow in 2018 with the release of the acclaimed album "Repatriation" on the Irie Ites Records label. With a career spanning over 35 years and boasting an impressive discography of 12 albums and countless singles, King Kong remains a force to be reckoned with in the reggae world mark the minds of fans of the artist!https://www.irieites.net/https://www.facebook.com/irie.ites/https://soundcloud.com/irie-ites-recordshttps://www.youtube.com/user/IRIEITESMANAJAHhttps://twitter.com/IRIEITESRECORDSWho Needs a Superhero When You Have Whipped Body Butter?Dry, itchy skin? Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

Incoming transmission from Hopeton Overton Brown, better known as Scientist. As a protege of dub pioneer King Tubby, Scientist represents dub's third generation—at least that's how his 1981 collaboration with Tubby and Prince Jammy, First Second, and Third Generation, puts it. Originating in Kingston, Hopeton earned his nickname from Bunny Lee due to his highly complex mixing skills, who famously opined, "Damn, this little boy must be a scientist.”  These days he's living in Los Angeles, where he joined host Jason P. Woodbury for this all-new episode. Prepare to cover a lot of ground, as we move from his origins at Channel One and Tuff Gong to divine messages, run-ins with Lee "Scratch" Perry, aliens and angels, simulation theory, his suspicions about modern cannabis strains, the digital vs analog debate, and much more. For heads, by heads. Aquarium Drunkard is powered by its patrons. Keep the servers humming and help us continue doing it by pledging your support via our Patreon page. 本期讨论的内容有: 牙买加的deejay 文化,跟我们通常认知的DJ 是不同的,其实更像 MC; 70s 开始流行的deejay 文化中, riddim 的概念开始突出,也出现 dub 这种后来被广泛应用于电子乐制作的手法; 想要了解70s中期雷鬼deejay 面貌,推荐以制作人 Bunny Lee为核心的 backing band The Aggrovators ; 70s 后期至80s前期发展出了 rub-a-dub这种风格,成为了dancehall 开始的根源,最有代表性的backing band 是 The Revolutionaries,Sly&Robbie脱离乐队后,Roots Radics 与制作人 Hery “Junjo” Lawes ,混音师 The Scientist 成为固定组合; 出现于50s末期的牙买加 sound system 的有趣背景; 当代dancehall 音乐人里我们喜欢的 Koffee,Chronixx,和 dancehall 对当下流行乐的影响体现; 90s在纽约有很多Hip-Hop与 dancehall的融合,是一段非常奇特的时期(24期我们也说过像 KRS-One 就非常喜欢dancehall 元素),代表人物 Super Cat, Shaggy, Bounty Killer,也产生了之后更跨界的 Ragga ; 我们都非常喜欢的一个自2000s以来长期统治 dancehall 的狠哥哥Vybz Kartel; 牙买加的俱乐部文化 daggering 可太牛逼了; 2000s 出现了一个非常著名的一个Riddim 类型—— Diwali Riddim (制作人是 Lenky)对当时的流行乐影响其实也很大,只不过并不太被承认; Diwali Riddim 的流行跟当时美国市场喜欢异域音乐的口味相对应; MoWax 曾经也出过一个 Riddim 合辑 ”Now Thing Vol.1” 想了解更多 2000s dancehall音乐的影响可以听 Greensleeves 厂牌发行的合辑; 老林推荐的出版公司:Trojan, Dr Bird, VP, Blood&Fire, Heartbeat, Island Records, Jet Star Playlist: Revolutionaries - “Kunta Kinte” Barrington Levy - “Here I Come” Young Thug - “Wyclef Jean” Super Cat feat. Heavy D - “Dem No Worry We” The Notorious B.I.G - “Respect” Bounty Killer, Fugees - “Hip-Hopera” Vybz Kartel - “Pussy Jaw” Nicki Minaj, Skillibeng - “Crocodile Teeth” Wayne Wonder - “No Letting Go” Ward 21 - “Mad” Bob Marley - “Redemption Song” 延伸阅读: https://digitizedgraffiti.com/2017/02/28/rub-a-dub-style-inside-the-roots-of-dancehall-culture/ https://daily.redbullmusicacademy.com/2015/10/diwali-loop-history 老林特意为节目挑选的 Spotify 歌单:

Radio Nova revisite ses propres classiques : les raretés de tout bord qui rythment notre antenne, de la soul-funk au hip-hop en passant par les musiques afro-latines et la pop. Aujourd’hui : « Don’t Leave Me » de Delroy Wilson. Visuel © Go Away Dream de Delroy Wilson See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The great Johnny Clarke joins us to talk about his career as one of the greatest, most influential artists in Reggae music. We discuss his work with producers like Clancy Eccles, Rupie Edwards and the great Bunny Lee. Johnny describes the magic of a mid-70s King Tubbys dance, and tells us about working and recording with the master of dub to voice some of the biggest tunes in the history of Jamaican music. We also dive into the backstory behind the creation of some of our favorite Johnny Clarke cuts. Possessing a silky yet grainy, versatile voice, singer Delroy Melody has been playing his trade for 50 years. Born Lassive Jones, he began his career in late 60s trio The Schoolboys, with Lawrence Weir (brother of the Jamaicans’ Norris Weir) and one Jacob Miller (who would lead Inner Circle). Not to be confused with Prince Buster’s namesake child ensemble, The Schoolboys recorded the fast-reggae sides Guilty Of Love and Oh Tell Me for producer Bunny Lee. Guilty Of Love would be refashioned by Miller as Love Is A Message at Coxsone Dodd’s Studio 1 and Keep on Knocking for Augustus Pablo. In the 1970s, Delroy Melody went solo, cutting debut Tears for Bob Mac’s Abeng label. Six years later he voiced roots anthem Dread Must Be Fed for Dickie Wong’s Tit For Tat Records (written by his friend, drummer Sly Dunbar, in response to Haile Selassie’s passing). The song got a makeover for soundman Emperor Marcus, crowning his 1979 collector’s LP of the same name. Like his close comrade, Jamaicans member, Errol “I Kong”, Mr Melody experienced the vicissitudes of the Jamaican record business. The Dread Must Be Fed album was released abroad without Delroy seeing any royalties, while Marcus served jail-time for herb. The following year, Ease Up The Pressure - a remake of Dennis Brown’s Easy Take It Easy for Ruddy Williams - was repurposed in 1980’s infamous election and banned by the radio. Again like I Kong, Delroy retired to the St Elizabeth countryside during the slackness era, where he and his wife have been happily self-releasing via their Level Head Music label. Lately, he has branched out to European imprints: reissuing Ease Up The Pressure and Dread Must Be Fed on France’s Jamwax Records; and updating 1986 Harry J hit Buss Shot for Glasgow’s Scotch Bonnet Records’ Puffer’s Choice compilation. https://unitedreggae.com/articles/n2331/013018/interview-delroy-melody-part-1

24 Bigmikeydread Reggae Radio - The Gorgon - A Tribute to Bunny Lee Bunny Lee passed away on the 6th October this year of 2020. This show is offered in respect of I believe the greatest of all the Jamaican record producers. Not only did he virtually single handedly define the ‘Skinhead’ era of Early Reggae but he excelled in the era of the Golden age of Roots Reggae, a mission seemingly past the capabilities of Coxsone Dodd and Duke Reid, who only re-packed and re-dubbed their earlier output for a new era, fantastic though it was, while Lee produced fresh rhythms and entirely new music. Not only did he encourage the creativity of the greatest of house bands, but he employed the early creative talents of King Tubby, a genre defining artist (in the true meaning of the word) himself. He produced one of the first tunes to be called ‘Reggae’ Bangarang by Max Romeo and Lester Sterling.. he truly was ‘The Gorgon’ a Monster of Music. With thanks to Ken Jones aka Charlie Reggae for the Unity and Gas Singles. Charlie passed away many years ago, but was my original Reggae music mentor. 1. It's time for Paul to play some records, so that's what he did for hour one. There was an anniversary cut, the birth of a new (mini) feature and a Bunny Lee tribute set.Hour two is a completely different affair. Steve was sure that it was a cohesive hour. Think of it a bit like translating a paragraph from French to English a word at a time only using a dictionary. While it each word may make sense, when viewed as a whole piece it's a nonsense. The selection took place at the 31. of March. This time it contains roundabout 2 hours of roots reggae and dub music. Straight from the foundations to the present time. For example there are some new tunes from the latest LP produced by Jah Schulz: Right Time - Right Dub. The selection opens the connection to UKs underground scene in the past commercially known as UK Dub. Aba Shanti I is a well known provider with the Shanti Ites and the 90s revival represses. At this point there is no need for more words. Hope you fulljoy the set. Dub it! 1. Ayatollah – Jackie Mittoo 2. Little Flute Chant – Lee Perry with Brad Osbourne & The Towerchanters 3. Cole was born in #Kingston, Jamaica in July 26 1942 and nicknamed "Stranger" by his family, as they considered that he didn't resemble any member of his family. Cole was initially successful as a songwriter, writing "In and out the Window", which was a hit for Eric "Monty" Morris. This success gave him the chance to make his recording debut in 1962, instantly finding success with singles such as "Rough and Tough" and "When You Call My Name" (a duet with Patsy Todd) for producer Arthur "Duke" Reid. Further success followed with singles for Reid through to the mid-#1960s, and he also worked with other producers at this time, including Clement "Coxsone" Dodd (a duet with Ken Boothe on "Worlds Fair"), and Prince Buster. Further duets included recordings with Gladstone Anderson (on "Just Like a River") and Hortense Ellis, the tendency to record duets apparently due to his shyness when it came to singing alone. In the late 1960s and early #1970s he recorded with several producers, including Bunny Lee, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Sonia Pottinger. These included further material with Todd as "Stranger & Patsy." In 1971 he emigrated to England, where he toured extensively, and moved on again to Canada in 1973, settling in Toronto

Cole was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1945 and nicknamed "Stranger" by his family, as they considered that he didn't resemble any member of his kin. Further success followed with singles for Reid through to the mid-1960s, and he also worked with other producers at this time, including Clement "Coxsone" Dodd (a duet with Ken Boothe on "Worlds Fair"), and Prince Buster. Further duets included recordings with Gladstone Anderson (on "Just Like a River") and Hortense Ellis, the tendency to record duets apparently due to his shyness when it came to singing alone. In the late 1960s and early 1970s he recorded with several producers, including Bunny Lee, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Sonia Pottinger.

Davis was born in the Waterhouse district of Kingston in 1973.He was involved in the music industry from a young age, starting toasting at the age of five, and was encouraged by his uncle Sydney Knowles, who played drums for Jimmy Cliff. He won the Tastee Talent contest in 1981, and Radio DJ Barry G introduced him to local sound system operators, who helped to establish the popularity of the young deejay, who became known as Beenie Man. He recorded his debut single, "Too Fancy", with record producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes in 1981, with Lawes also including him on the 1983 album Junjo Presents Two Big Sounds alongside established stars such as Dillinger, Fathead, and Ringo. His debut album, The Invincible Beenie Man: The Ten Year Old DJ Wonder was produced by Bunny Lee and released in 1983,his first hit single following the same year with the Winston Holness-produced "Over the Sea". In 1984 Beenie Man recorded some material with Barrington Levy (released ten years later), but his music career was put on hold while he finished school, and spent time travelling to the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada.

Born: March 27, 1940 (age 76), Clarendon Parish, Jamaica Children: Queen Ifrica Albums: Tougher Than Tough (Rudie in Court), Genres: Rocksteady, Reggae, Ska,Record labels: Trojan Records, ROIR, Charly Records.Derrick Morgan Jump-Starts Careers Of Cliff, Buster And Others. Now visually impaired, but still going strong, Morgan celebrated his 76th birthday last Sunday, and that makes it quite opportune for us to reminisce on the enormous contribution he made to Jamaica's popular music during its embryonic stage.Buster, who asked me to help him out by doing some songs and starting a business. I helped him and later went with him to studio. He recorded, They Got To Go and Shake A Leg, and then I took Monty Morris with me and he did Humpty Dumpty, and that's how we became friends in the music".In 1967 Morgan was at it again, helping his would-be brother-in-law Bunny Lee into the production business. Lee was grateful. His production of Max Romeo's, Let the power fall on I, and his penning of three festival song winners between 1998 and 2002, seem to have defied the laws of logic when one considers that the achievements were attained while Morgan was visually impaired.

++ TRIBUTE TO JOHN HOLT ++ John Holt passed this week and as his golden voice touched us so deeply we felt it necessary to drop a tribute mix to the man. The Paragons seduced us with Rock Steady - the soaring harmonies and raw emotions of Left With A Broken Heart. We swayed to a solo John Holt as he teamed up with Bunny Lee to Stick By You. He lent his polish to a few roots tune that drove me with flying cymbals. And then he teamed up with Junjo Lawes to drop Police & Helicopter and that yearning romanticism turned dark, militant, unforgiving and mirrored so perfectly the dark under-currents of the time that it almost took my breath away in its utter artistic transformation. To cover the man's career would be impossible, so I just chose a few of my favorite tracks in full acknowledgement of all the ones I will be kicking myself later for not adding. The Celebrity Link: #1 songs  by Jamaicans  reaching UK Singles National Chart The incidence of Jamaican recordings reaching the United Kingdom charts and impacting British culture has become commonplace. Millie Small's 1964 remake of Barbie Gaye's 1957 R&B hit, My Boy Lollipop set the trend when it climbed to No. 2 on the British charts. It effectively opened the floodgates for a deluge of Jamaican recordings to flow incessantly onto the British charts. Earlier, others like Laurel Aitken and Dandy Livingstone created an initial impact, with Aitken's Boogie in My Bones and Little Sheila in 1957 becoming the first Jamaican-made recordings to be distributed in England. A couple years after Millie Small's hit, ska legend Prince Buster burst onto the UK music scene with the ultimate rude-boy song, Al capone Guns Don't Argue, which established his career in Britain. The year 1967 saw the biggest Jamaica-UK hit of that period, when Desmond Dekker's 007 (Shanty Town) found its way to the No. 14 slot on the charts. Dekker, who had ushered in a more conscious form of Jamaican rocksteady, revealed to the outside world, through the recording, the condition of ghetto dwellers and gun-toting hoodlums in a society going through a transition: Two years later, Dekker and the Aces would return to register Jamaica's greatest impact on the UK charts and the first Jamaican record to hit the No. 1 spot there — Israelites. Although few could understand its lyrics, it became a timeless masterpiece, merely on the strength of its intense reggae beat, reaching the top in April 1969.http://www.herald.co.zw/jamaican-music-rules-uk/ 661-467-2407 www.crsradio.com

Mighty Diamonds are a Jamaican harmony trio, recording roots reggae with a strong Rastafarian influence. was formed in 1969 and remains together as of 2012. They are best known for their 1976 debut album Right Time produced by Joseph Hoo Kim and the 1979 release Deeper Roots.Formed in 1969 in the Trenchtown area of Kingston, the group comprises lead vocalist Donald "Tabby" Shaw, and harmony vocalists Fitzroy "Bunny" Simpson and Lloyd "Judge" Ferguson.[1][2] They had become friends at school in the mid-1960s, and were originally called The Limelight, adopting 'The Mighty Diamonds' after Shaw's mother started referring to them as "the diamonds".[3][4] Their smooth harmonies and choreographed stage show were inspired by Motown vocal groups of the 1960s, with Shaw listing The Temptations, The Stylistics, The Impressions, and The Delfonics as influences as well as Jamaican rocksteady artists such as John Holt and Ken Boothe.[2][3][4] Their early recordings were produced by Pat Francis, Stranger Cole ("Girl You Are Too Young" (1970), "Oh No Baby"), Derrick Harriott ("Mash Up"), Bunny Lee ("Jah Jah Bless the Dreadlocks", "Carefree Girl"), Lee "Scratch" Perry ("Talk About It"), and Rupie Edwards, but it was in 1973 that they had their first hit single with the Francis-produced "Shame and Pride", recorded at the Dynamic Sounds studio.[2][4][5] It was their mid-1970s work with producer Joseph Hoo Kim that gave them their real breakthrough.[1] "Country Living" and "Hey Girl", were recorded and released by the Channel One label. "Right Time" followed, on Hoo Kim's Well Charge label, and cemented their status as one of the top Jamaican groups of the time www.crsradio.com 661-467-2407 caribbeanradioshow@gmail.com

Holt was born in Kingston in 1947.  He recorded his first single in 1963 with "I Cried a Tear" for record producer Leslie Kong, and also recorded duets with Alton Ellis. He achieved prominence in his home country as lead singer of The Paragons and they cut a succession of singles for Duke Reid at his Treasure Isle Studio and enjoyed a string of hits, including "Ali Baba", "Tonight", "I See Your Face", and the Holt penned "The Tide Is High" (later made famous by Blondie and also covered by Atomic Kitten). "Wear You to the Ball" was another of his hits with The Paragons, and hit the charts again when U-Roy added a Deejay verse to it. During his time with the Paragons, he also recorded solo material for Studio One (including "Fancy Make-up", "A Love I Can Feel", "Let's Build Our Dreams" and "OK Fred") and Prince Buster ("Oh Girl", and "My Heart Is Gone"). Holt left the Paragons in 1970. By the early 1970s, he was one of the biggest stars of reggae, and his "Stick By Me" was the biggest selling Jamaican record of 1972, one of a number of records recorded with producer Bunny Lee. His 1973 album, Time Is The Master, was successful, with orchestral arrangements recorded in London. The success of the string-laden reggae led to Trojan Records issuing a series of similarly arranged albums produced by Bunny Lee starting with the 1,000 Volts of Holt in 1973, a compilation of Holt's reggae cover versions of popular hits (and later followed by similarly named releases up to 3,000 Volts of Holt). 1,000 Volts spawned the UK Top 10 hit "Help Me Make It Through the Night" (written by Kris Kristofferson), which peaked at number 6,[2] and included covers of Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" and "Touch Me in the Morning" by Diana Ross. http://en.wikipedia.org

Few artistes have contributed more to Jamaican music than Ansel Collins.  Not necessarily as a featured artiste, though he can lay claim to two UK top 10 records, but more as one of the musicians who have helped form the music over the last 40 years.  He must be on many hundreds (probably even thousands!) of reggae tunes.  And, whenever the Reggae Hall of Fame is built, he will have the right to be among the first handful admitted. Born in Jamaica in 1949, he began in the 60s as a singer but then switched, first to drums and then more fruitfully to keyboards. In 1971, with vocalist Dave Barker, he recorded "Double Barrel" for the Winston Riley Techniques label.  The tune went to No 1 in the UK and young Ansel found himself, fresh from Jamaica, in the history books and on "Top of the Pops".   The first ever all-male duo to top the UK Pop charts saw the follow-up "Monkey Spanner" miss the top spot but still make the top 10.In 1973, he recorded "Stalag 17", an instrumental track.   Collins spent the rest of the 70s busily working as a studio musician with every reputable aggregate that Jamaica could put together. This included being a member of the Bunny Lee house band The Aggrovators, and (with a young Sly and Robbie), the keyboardist of the Channel One house band, The Revolutionaries.  When Sly and Robbie set up their own Taxi label, he became part of their house band, the Taxi Gang too! He also worked with many of the most legendary producers of the 70s such as King Tubby and Lee Perry (for whom he wrote and recorded "Night Doctor").

The producer Joe Gibbs, hardcore Jamaican entrepreneur, engineer, and record producer started recording artists in the back of his electronics repair shop in 1966. He worked with Lee "Scratch" Perry who had left the employ of Coxsone Dodd's Studio One. Bunny Lee helped them form The Amalgamated record label. Soon 'Niney The Observer' joined the team and they were able to produce Rocksteady era hits. In 1972, Errol Thompson came on board as the chief engineer and together with Joe Gibbs formed "The Mighty Two." Their studio band called The Professionals featured bassist Sly Dunbar, drummer Robbie Shakespeare, and guitarist Earl "Chinna" Smith. Hundreds of hits came out including "Money in My Pocket" by Dennis Brown and "A So We Stay" by Big Youth. In 1977 the Culture album entitled "Two Sevens Clash" debuted and became a smash hit which coincided with the punk rock craze in the UK.  Artists recorded and produced by Joe Gibbs included Dennis Brown, Jacob Miller, Gregory Isaacs, Junior Byles, Barrington Levy, Cornell Campbell, Delroy Wilson, Beres Hammond, JC Lodge, Marcia Aitken, Althea and Donna, Ranking Joe and Peter Tosh. The list goes on and on. In the new millennium, Joe Gibbs focused on marketing his back catalog.  Joe Gibbs passed on to Zion in February 2008.  He had over 100 Jamaica number one hits and over a dozen UK hits. He released music on an array of different record labels. An amazing body of work, the Joe Gibbs catalog includes some very important songs in the story of Jamaican music.  Salute to the icon, the giant, one of the greatest producers ever - Joe Gibbs.  Please subscribe to the reggae lover podcast.
