And even though it was a joyous celebration, that didn’t stop WIll and Matt from pulling a prank during rehearsal! And with a big, yet somewhat disappointing, graduation speech, the gang wonders if Shawn was the actual star of this season, while Will details how his "To Sir" close-up, and two very special cameos, came together. And Topanga has made her big decision, giving the show its biggest cliffhanger yet! The gang knows they're in for a new era of BMW - but it all starts with this season finale rewatch on Pod Meets World...See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Now "here's a howdy-do" (The Mikado, Gilbert & Sullivan). How does Joe Meek shed light on that ascendant movement -- and it still is ascendant -- within New Testament scholarship and interpretation? Let me say how. Admirers of Joe Meek's amazing productions like to say that he was way ahead of his time in terms of technology and recording innovation BUT that the songs themselves, almost all of them, in their many hundreds, are sentimental, corny and juvenile. But they're not! They may sound that way, but just listen to the words. They're about "guys and gals", the denizens of Grease and also of To Sir, with Love, and -- wait for it -- everybody. None of Joe's songs -- not a single one, except maybe, at the very end, one, entitled "It's Hard to Believe It" -- are about issues or groups or themes. Every song Joe ever chose to produce is about love: love gone wrong, love gone right, love fulfilled, love disappointed, love obstructed, love enabled. The evidence for this preoccupation is in the lyrics -- and oh, about 99.999 % of them. The same is true in relation to the New Perspective on Paul. The evidence that that movement is founded on an imposed "story" or paradigm, is overwhelming. That is, if you actually read the Letters of St. Paul. Or the Book of Hebrews, from start to finish. Christ came to give us a New Covenant, not a sort-of "expanded" version of the Old. The Old is passed away, behold the New is come. For years and years, I have tried to say this. (One is instantly accused of "supercessionism" if one says it. And that seems to end the argument. But the accusatory term is arbitrary, linguistic, and freighted.) The evidence of the New Testament is in fact overwhelmingly contrary to the evisceration of Grace that has been dynamized by the New Perspective. Joe Meek underlines this. His lyrics confirm it. A little "icky" at times they may be, but relationships that strive for mutual love can also be icky. Joe's songs mirror an odd truth: life is about individual men and women who are trying to find... belovedness, and therefore love in return. Dear New Testament interpreters, read the Letters of St. Paul. Read the Letter to the Hebrews. Read the Gospels -- all of them. And read 'em again in the light of Joe Meek! The subject and meaning is staring you in the face. LUV U.

In this episode, Elizabeth and John talk with Derron Wallace, sociologist of education and Brandeis colleague, about his new book The Culture Trap, which explores "ethnic expectations" for Caribbean schoolchildren in New York and London. His work starts with the basic puzzle that while black Caribbean schoolchildren in New York are often considered as "high-achieving," in London, they have been, conversely thought to be "chronically underachieving." Yet in each case the main cause -- of high achievement in New York and low achievement in London -- is said to be cultural. We discuss the concept of "ethnic expectations" and the ways it can have negative effects even when the expectations themselves are positive, and the dense intertwining of race, class, nation, colonial status, and gender, and the travels of the concept of culture in the 20th and 21st centuries. Lulu's husky croon is unmistakeable. The Scottish shouter is a UK national treasure, and still gorgeous. Picking up the torch from Brenda Lee, and passing it to Miley Cyrus, Lulu was, (along with Dusty Springfield), foundational to the world-wide popularization of white, female voiced R&B. Her 1964 cover of The Isley Brother's Shout, at the age of 15 cemented her vocal persuasiveness, and To Sir, With Love catapulted her into the dreams of millions of devotional worshippers like me. James Clavell's film about a black teacher thrown into the deep end of London's inner city school system, was part of Sidney Poitier's cinematic triple crown of 1967, following: In the Heat of the Night (for which he won the academy award), and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? Everything about the project was poised for success, and the title song didn't disappoint - driving to number 1 as it cascaded out of every car radio across America. I was 13 when I saw the film, and it made a big impression on me. Of course, Sidney Poitier's journey from awkward novice to mentor was totally convincing (as were all his performances? - but it was Lulu's voice that has stayed with me through the years. And, with each passing year it glows a little bit warmer.

The British Invasion of the mid-60's is best known for The Beatles, but there were more groups than just the boys from Liverpool.  In fact, just a month after The Beatles played on Ed Sullivan the Dave Clark Five would take that stage, the first of 12 appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show.  The quintet consisted of Dave Clark on drums and backing vocals, Rick Huxley on bass, Mike Smith on vocals and keyboard, Lenny Davidson on lead guitar, and Dennis Payton on Sax, Harmonica, and vocals. The British Invasion was really a re-introduction of American music, as many of the British acts took inspiration from soul, gospel, and blues music from places like Chicago, Detroit, Memphis, and New Orleans.  This re-introduction was accompanied by intriguing accents, strange fashion and hair styles, and a lot of energy and heart. The sixth American album release from the Dave Clark Five was entitled Having a Wild Weekend, and was the soundtrack to a movie of the same title.  This film was originally released as "Catch Us If You Can," in the UK, but was renamed when it was released in the States.  It is a light-hearted social drama similar to "A Hard Day's Night" released by the Beatles, and it likewise was used as a vehicle to increase the popularity of the band and their songs.Unlike the Beatles, the Dave Clark Five never ventured into the psychedelic sound of the late 60's, and their popularity began to wane by 1967.  The group would disband in 1967.John Lynch brings us this classic group and soundtrack for this week's podcast. Having a Wild WeekendThis single was written by Dave Clark and Mike Smith, and is the lead-off and title track to the album.  The premise of the album is that Dinah, a model for an add campaign for meat, runs off with one of the stunt men while shooting a TV commercial.  The ad executives use their disappearance to generate more publicity for their client.New Kind of LoveWe're not really sure if this song is about a guy whose girlfriend cheats on him, or about a stalker who like a girl who has no idea that the guy thinks they're dating.  I Said I Was SorryWhen the guy messes up in the relationship, he is left wondering why everything isn't OK now that he has said he was sorry.  The lyrics at the time weren't meant to be studied too seriously, were they?  At least he said he was sorry, because we would find out from Elton John years later that "sorry" seems to be the hardest word.Catch Us If You CanCo-written by Dave Clark and Lenny Davidson, this was the title song for the UK version of the album.  It leads off side two, and was the hit single from the album, rising to number 4 on the US charts.  The finger snapping and guitar leading into the song was a catchy hook. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “Gidget” The Frederick Kohner novels about a teenager in the surfing culture would lead to films of the late 50's, and a TV show that would begin in 1965 starring Sally Field. STAFF PICKS:Just a Little by The Beau BrummelsBruce's staff pick is one of the groups that is credited with creating the San Francisco sound.  The Beau Brummels were Sal Valentino on vocals, Ron Elliott on lead guitar, Declan Mulligan on guitar, Ron Meagher on bass, and John Petersen on drums.  This is off their debut album entitled "Introducing the Beau Brummels," which was produced by Sly Stallone  The Train Kept a-Rollin' by Screaming Lord Sutch & the SavagesYou may be familiar with the Aerosmith version of this song, but Rob brings you an earlier version of the classic blues track originally recorded by Tiny Bradshow in 1951.  Screaming Lord Sutch was known for his Halloween-themed stage shows, complete with knives and coffins, with the lead singer appearing as Jack the RIpper. The Game of Love by Wayne Fontana and the MindbendersWayne features a number 1 hit from the Billboard Hot 100.  The group took its name from a British movie, and appeared in the 1967 Sidney Poitier film, "To Sir, with Love."  The group broke up at the final concert of a UK tour with The Who, Arthur Brown, and Joe Coker on November 20, 1968.Count Me In by Gary Lewis and The PlayboysLynch closes out the staff picks with a group that was originally known as Gary & the Playboys, hiding the relationship that Gary had with his celebrity father, Jerry Lewis.  They auditioned and were hired to play at Disneyland, and frequently played to full houses.  The group suffered in live performances, because producer Snuff Garrett utilized session musicians heavily on their studio tracks, and the band could not duplicate their studio sound on the stage.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Maiden Voyage by the Herbie HancockThis instrumental jazz piece that closes out the podcast shows the longevity of Herbie Hancock's career, and was the title track to his album of the same name.

Sidney had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where cast and talent came out to show their support for the Poitier family. Red carpet appearances included: Oprah Winfrey, Sherri Poitier, Pamela Poitier, Anika Poitier, Sydney Poitier, Sherri Poitier, Beverly Poitier- Henderson, and Reginald Hudlin. All came together with one thing on their minds, love. Oprah said when discussing content for the film, everyone came together. Oprah said they never spoke about being "trailblazers" but about the cosmos, life, struggle,s and more. Meanwhile, Sherri Poitier said she surprised her family and came together in the spirit of love that her dad would have wanted. She said he was about love, giving it to the world, and the world giving it back to him. Listen to hear the rest of the family and attendees talk about the importance of this film while honoring Sidney Poitier. Host: Monica Gleberman Editor: Marianna Randazzo Social Media Graphic: Jojo -- Synopsis: Sidney Poitier was one of the most gifted and charismatic actors the cinema has known. This sweeping documentary crafts a richly detailed portrait, surveying Poitier's films, life story, and litany of accomplishments as an artist and activist who forever changed what it means to be Black in America. Poitier's own words provide the narration, telling the story of a boy born to tomato farmers in the Bahamas. Moving to the US at age 15, he quickly learned the brutal realities of the Jim Crow era but also found his passion for acting. Director Reginald Hudlin (House Party, Boomerang, Marshall) weaves together a rich mix of archive footage and contemporary interviews with a stellar group of interview subjects — from the late cultural critic Greg Tate to Halle Berry, Denzel Washington, Spike Lee, and Oprah Winfrey (also producer of the film). Poitier's contemporaries and the holders of his legacy detail just how extraordinary his rise was, from early failure at the American Negro Theater to Oscar-nominated roles in films like The Defiant Ones, to becoming the living, big-screen embodiment of America's hopes for racial justice. Poitier's rise to stardom occurred in tandem with his commitment to social change, marching for civil rights with Martin Luther King Jr. alongside his lifelong friend Harry Belafonte, and helping to usher Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, a milestone in portraying Black American experience, from Broadway to the big screen. By the mid-1960s Poitier was everywhere. In 1967 alone he made Guess Who's Coming to Dinner; To Sir, With Love; and In the Heat of the Night. Watching signature scenes from his films, getting a glimpse of rare footage from his life beyond Hollywood, and seeing how pivotal his life and example has been for so many of today's icons, it's clear that there never was and never can be a figure quite like Sidney Poitier. This film serves as a beautiful, powerful testament. *The film is currently screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. Ep. 152: Change of the Guard, the Films of Peter Bogdanovich - Part 5

The Twin Geekscast

The following chapter of Bogdanovich's career has yet to be recorded in any significant capacity. Previous retrospectives of his works tend to end at his dramatic apex, with the more thorough examinations dipping into the later classics and recent reevaluations recognizing his last theatrical works. Nobody, however, has paid any attention to his TV works from the ‘90s. Nobody. “I did a lot of tv work that I'm very proud of, but television work doesn't get considered the same as a feature, even though you shoot it like a feature. It's still a movie. You still get the script right, you still cast it, you shoot it quickly. And it's harder to do because you're shooting fast, but it doesn't get any consideration. It's snob appeal.” That's what Bogdanovich had to say in a rare interview in which he was asked about his television works, expressing at least some bitterness at the disregard paid to the work he gave equal efforts to despite the smaller canvas. “I was directing, but I wasn't doing theatrical features. I did five television films in five years. I shot them very fast, and nobody saw them except millions of people.” Although these films are all but forgotten today, in their time Bogdanovich's “movie-of-the-week” work was quite successful. With every household glued to their tvs in search of nightly entertainment throughout the decade, Bogdanovich's films made waves across the Neilson ratings, but promptly disappeared from the pages of posterity. Even his first television project, a sequel to the classic Sidney Poitier film To Sir, with Love, has made no impression on the Bogdanovich canon. In a depressing fit of irony, the two Hollywood legends passed tragically on the same day, making To Sir, with Love II a kind of twilight coda for the both of them, buried within the legacies of their more treasured works. It's a worthy successor to its predecessor – better, even, in some regards, such as the way it transplants the tangential racial themes of the first movie to the progressive and more critical conversations of the 1990s. Bogdanovich's films had rarely ventured outside his prerogative for thematic material up until now, but by transitioning to for-hire work on television he'd find a number of new opportunities to explore perspectives and struggles which were beyond his own. Blessed Assurance (perhaps also known as The Price of Heaven) attempts to continue this conversation in its portrayal of a Korean War veteran returning home to face a moral dilemma in a job which requires him to prey on the vulnerability of an impoverished Black commune. The truncated structure of the TV-movie mold does the story a disservice and leaves the film little room to flesh out its themes. Its embrace of melodrama betrays the sense of distinction Bogdanovich eloquently bestowed on his first TV production, embodying the kind of schmaltzy, middling productions derisively associated with the genre. Rescuers: Stories of Courage: Two Women is the first in a series of three thematically related movies about courageous persons aiding the escape of Jews from Nazi agents in occupied Poland. Bognavoch helmed this first entry, but the film lacks any recognizable features attributable to the director. Despite himself having been conceived in the former Yugoslavia before his parents fled from the Nazis and landed in New York, the film lacks any personal distinction or any significant revelations – as bog standard as Bogdanovich ever got.Jules Dassin was unfortunately not one of the major Hollywood directors whose influence managed to inspire Bogdanovich to chronicle their legacy, but his important role as an architect of Film Noir's impact on cinema nonetheless managed to worm its way into Bogdanovich's career. The Naked City was a seminal 1948 noir which distinguished itself with a documentary-like approach to shooting on the streets of New York. Bogdanovich was hired to make a tv movie continuation of the characters first seen in Dassin's film, now dealing with the criminals of contemporary New York. Naked City: A Killer Christmas stars Scott Glenn in the role first helmed by grizzled noir everyman Richard Widmark searching for a serial killer terrorizing the city. It's about as close as Bogdanovich ever got to inheriting the legacy of Fritz Lang or Edgar Ulmer, but more often the film feels like any ordinary cop drama than an expressionistic revival. The next film from Bogdanovich couldn't be farther from his usual prerogative. A body swap comedy set in New Orleans where professional football player David Alan Grier and artist wife Vivica A. Fox mend their marriage through the old adage of walking a mile in each other's shoes. It's also a Disney film, brimming with the requisite amount of Disney cornball and childish humor. A Saintly Switch maintains a certain affable charm, a universal appeal which speaks to the importance of family and communication, while supplying some fantastical humor in all of Bogdanovich's illustrious comic career.   From one sports sphere to another, Bogdanovich's last TV film was produced, surprisingly, by ESPN. They asked him to make a movie about disgraced baseball legend Pete Rose, whose story interested Bogdanovich as a kind of embodiment of the failures of the American Dream. Rose rose his way up in prominence through a lucrative and record-breaking career in baseball, but squandered it all away thanks to a debilitating gambling addiction. He became a coach for the team he first became famous on, and started fixing games to pay his bills. When he was finally caught, he spent five months in jail and was stripped of all his previous honors. What we see in Hustle is that downfall in full, a depraved portrait of a fallen man finally reaching the end of his rope. If you're not a fan of baseball, or aren't particularly familiar with the legend of Pete Rose, then Hustle will likely be a foul ball instead of a home run. But regardless of how successful or not these films ultimately were, they kept Bogdanovich employed – and even more than that, they sharpened his skills. “I couldn't have made The Cat's Meow, which we did in 31 days, if I hadn't have done five television films back-to-back in five years — all of them 19, 20, 22, 24 days.” There would never be another Last Picture Show for the enlightened successor of the Hollywood masters, but he did manage some respectable efforts working in an undervalued medium. Bogdanovich never considered his television works any less worthy of consideration than his feature films, and neither should we. Considering how a number of Bogdanovich's most treasured films still don't have proper distribution (even Paper Moon lacks a North American blu-ray release), it should come as no surprise that his televisual period languishes thanks to pervasive obscurity. We feel very privileged here at The Twin Geeks to have the resources necessary for us to catalog and cover these forgotten films, with special thanks to Scarecrow Video in Seattle, Washington for preserving these works on a physical format, which not even the unsavoriest of internet pirates have thought to claim. It's up to us to preserve the legacy of filmmakers like Peter Bogdanovich; to do for him what he did for Orson Welles, John Ford, and innumerable others. To prop up his legacy and appreciate everything he gave to the world – classics, flops, scriptures, and chronicles – because, if nothing else, the life and career of Peter Bogdanovich exemplified an appreciation for the art of cinema above all else, and the necessity of its preservation and celebration in equal measure.

Book Vs Movie: “To Sir, With Love” The 1959 E.R. Braithewaite Novel Vs the 1967 Sidney Poitier Movie To Sir, With Love was a smash hit movie in 1967 making over $40 million at the box office and making singer Lulu an international sensation who not only stars in the film but sings the theme song. The Margos take a deep dive into the original work and how it came to be the voice of a generation in London during the “mod” movement.  The 1959 novel is based on the true-life story of E. R. Braithwaite, a Guyanese-born English/American writer who served in the Royal Air Force during World War II and then gained his education at the City College of New York and his Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge. Despite his exceptional skills and education--as a black man, he had a very difficult time finding a job in the work of his choosing. The racism of the time forced him to find work as a teacher in the East End of London.  Later he became a social worker and human rights advocate fighting racism and oppression. It is unclear how he felt about the 1967 adaptation which was written and directed by James Clavell who decided to jettison a subplot about interracial romance and focus more on the students.   The biggest reason for its film's success was the lead actor Sidney Poitier who was one of the most bankable stars of the 1960s and never really got his due for his box office appeal. He would go on the make millions from this film when the studio gave up on creating a more rough tale that included a sexual assault and/or a “big fight.” Poitier also appeared in the 1996 Sequel To Sir, With Love II.  So between the novel and the movie--which did we prefer? Have a listen and find out!  In this ep the Margos discuss: The biography of E.R. Braithwaite and his scholastic career  The author's experience in South Africa in the 1970s   The changes between the novel set in 1947 and the movie set in 1967  The cast: Sidney Poitier (Mr. Mark Thackery,) Judy Greeson (Pamela Dare,) Christian Roberts (Bert Denham,) Suzy Kendall (Miss Gillian Blanchard,) Lulu (Babs Pegg,) Geoffrey Bayldon (Mr. Theo Weston,) Patricia Routledge (Clinty Clintridge,) Edward Burnham (Mr. Florian,) and The Mindbenders (as themselves.)  Clips used: Behave like adults To Sir, With Love trailer Fight scene How ladies and men should behave Last scene with Lulu singing  It's Getting Harder All the Time  performed by The Mindbenders Book Vs Movie is part of the Frolic Podcast Network.
