Mo'Ju is a shapeshifting artist. Over more than a decade, they've explored different sounds, stories and scenes… forever disrupting our expectations. Their new album is Oro, Plata, Mata. It's a concept record based in cycles, and very much rooted in Mo'Ju's sense of self and where they're headed. A week out from it's release, Mo'Ju joined me to Take 5 and explore this new era. Take 5 sings when my guest embraces the theme. And Mo'Ju did that, lacing in some extraordinary pieces of music with the fabric of where their head has been at, in making something new. From Tyler the Creator to Ngaiire to Nessun Dorma, this is an invitation into Mo'ju's musical heart. Tyler The Creator - Igor's Theme Milan Ring - Keep Me Safe Giacomo Puccini (Pavarotti recording) - Nessun Dorma Ngaiire – Him Gabriel Garzón-Montano - The Game

Sydney-based, Papua New Guinea-born artist Ngaiire delves into the personal journey that inspired her third studio album, 3 (out August 27). The singer-songwriter explains why going back to her Papua New Guinean roots turned into “a very expensive therapy session”, reveals the deeply personal events that inspired her powerful new single, Him, and shares why she's come to terms with people not ‘getting her' as an artist.
Lee Tran Lam talks to Alice Ivy about her second album, Don't Sleep, which was nominated for an Australian Music Prize. The Melbourne artist finished the record just as the world went into lockdown last year. She talks about collaborating with local greats Thelma Plum, Ecca Vandal and more, plus her international songwriting sessions with Cadence Weapon and other overseas collaborators on the record. She also covers the surreal way her Ecca Vandal track, "In My Mind", blew up around the world thanks to an Apple ad, while she was stuck in Melbourne during its intense 100+ day lockdown. This album was created at airports, on airplanes, in sweaty basements, in studios where the power cut out and has a million stories behind it. TRACKS INCLUDE: ‘Champagne Late Nights' ‘Sunrise feat. Cadence Weapon' ‘In My Mind feat. Ecca Vandal' ‘Ticket To Heaven feat. Thelma Plum' ‘Don't Sleep feat. Imbi & Boi' ‘I'll Find It feat. Odette' ‘Sweetest Love feat. Seja talks to her guest Ngaiire about surviving a volcanic eruption in Papua New Guinea as a child, how Australian life differs to PNG life, and how she started to love singing. She tells Seja about studying jazz, singing with Blue King Brown, and her mother’s influence on how she conducts herself creatively and personally. They chat about how writing a happy song is hard, getting a live show together and working in the gaps of parenting. Ngaiire’s strange show experience is illustrated by Ben Ely (Regurgitator). An edited version of this episode is also a video which you can see here: When I started this podcast in July 2016 with no knowledge of audio recording - let alone how to start a podcast - I never imagined that four years later I would have interviewed close to a hundred painters, as well as curators and authors, and have a YouTube channel with over 100 videos filmed on my iPhone. Building up this podcast would not have been possible, though, without the encouragement of those close to me and the time and generosity of my guests as well as many others' support in the wonderful Australian arts community. It has also been a privilege to get to know so many of you listeners either through messages, comments on social media or meeting you in person. Even if we haven't had any contact, you are the reason I keep doing the show so thank you for listening. I couldn't think of a better place to celebrate the centenary episode than the Art Gallery of NSW where about a quarter of my podcast guests are finalists in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes. So I'd like to say a big thankyou to the Art Gallery of NSW who allowed me in with my selfie stick to film and speak in front of these works. You can listen to this episode as an audio guide if you are at the gallery (scroll down for a map of where the works are), watch the edited version as a video here or just listen as an audio episode - all the works are reproduced below. Click here to see the map if you are looking at this on your podcast app. Next to each artist's name is a time marking for each painting so you can skip forward or back. https://youtu.be/C0DniKUU7Uo The Sulman Prize 1. Rachelle Jeanty and Rosie Henshaw Rayah are two Internationally acclaimed musicians, yoginis and inner peace advocates, who share sacred songs from the soul, chanting for the heart and meditation as a means of awakening the divine potential in all of us. Together they are RAYAH (the origin of this name comes from a Hebrew word meaning “friend of God”). Prolific singer/percussionist Rachelle hails from Haiti via Montreal, now based in Europe as a performer, Gospel workshop leader, meditation teacher and public speaker. After years in the glamour world of music as a backing vocalist for Celine Dion, Rachelle chose a deeper path, which led to her spiritual awakening. Since then, her heart's mission became to use her soulful presence and blessed gifts to serve the Divine A childhood spent meditating at the foothills of the Himalayas in India brought multi-instrumentalist/singer Rosie a great sense of spiritual awareness and musicality. Between India, the shores of Australia and now currently Amsterdam, Rosie has found true joy in expressing her heart through performing sitar, guitar, voice and devotional songwriting – with an extensive music career in Australia performing with Shanti Fire, Old Man River, Lulu & Mischka and Ngaiire, to name a few. The duo met by the riverside in Cabella Italy at a meditation retreat, and instantly felt swept up in the joy of devotion and commitment to serving the higher purpose. Their energies and music combine to offer nourishment to the heart and sweetness to the soul. In addition to the musical offering of their heart & soul songs, RAYAH wish to share with you the gift of Kundalini awakening through meditation and affirmations. Hi and welcome back to another episode of No Offence, But.I'm happy to be bringing you a conversation with one of my favourite artists and people, Sela Vai. Sela, is a Tongan Australian artist who seeks to create sensuous alchemy through movement. I first saw Sela perform a few years back at a Ngaiire gig at the Factory Theatre in Marrickville, Sydney. A couple of months later, Sela was working with Black Birds as choreographer of our first full-length theatrical show. Since then, Sela has choreographed all of our Black Birds shows and has become our Movement Director and Associate Artist. She's also movement directed for Ngaiire, Thelma Plum, L-Fresh the Lion (to name a few), choreographed for events, commercials and is a sought after teacher for movement and dance programs around the world. Sela also runs an artistic development program called Humxn that aims to connect, up-skill and empower womxn of all walks of life, inclusive of those femme/female-identifying/non-binary. Humxn is a safe space for womxn to explore their artistry to the ends of their unbound potential. Last year Humxn (which was previously known as You Therefore Me) and Black Birds co-curated an event called Reclaim at Sydney's PACT, which went on to win FBi Radio's SMAC award for Best On Stage (yeet!).In today's chat Sela shares her experience of being of the diaspora and living between two worlds, what it was like learning traditional Tongan movement from one of the Tongan Royal Family's ex-staffers and why it's so important for teachers and choreographers to facilitate a safe space. She tells us how the commercial dance industry is inhibiting artists and why she created Humxn. We also touch on the sometimes perilous world of Instagram and Sela tells us why she avoids using the word 'inclusive'.I loved this korero with Sela - I hope you do too! (And if you do ~ rate, review and subscribe!!!)You can find Sela and her program Humxn on IG @selavai and @__humxnor on YouTube (this is her new channel and this is her older channel). I highly suggest you just search 'Sela Vai' on YouTube because a whole lot of gold comes up. Sydney singer Ngaiire is a powerhouse. I remember the first time I heard her voice, I was a goner. The way her voice curled around every lyric was one thing, but her songwriting craft showed a promise that would pay off in the EP's and albums that would follow. Music has always been a big part of Ngaiire's life. As a child of the 90's, she grew up listening to pop songs in Papua New Guinea and New Zealand, then Australia. She would find a connection particularly to Janet Jackson and Talib Kweli; a brown woman in song in an overwhelmingly white Australia. This is a conversation about how we find our place, and connection, no matter where we are. Janet Jackson - ‘Together Again' Sisqó - ‘Thong Song' Talib Kweli - ‘Black Girl Pain' Frank Ocean - ‘Pink + White' Spice Girls - ‘2 Become 1'
