More than six years after the first—and more than four since the last—we have found our way back to DJs In The Distance. The project began as one of our more constructive lockdown decisions: Four mates, stuck in separate abodes, passing a DJ mix between one another… in lieu of the usual beers, banter and laughing away an afternoon in the studio. Thankfully, the lockdown part is now history. The format, though, well, it remains rather good fun. For the uninitiated, it remains our DJ interpretation of pass the parcel: One of us kicks off, plays a handful of tracks, and sends it on. The next picks up wherever the music has landed. It is without a central brief, fixed genre or agreed destination: New music, old favourites, deeper cuts, guilty pleasures and the occasional left turn are all fair game. The only real objective is to listen, respond and keep the thing moving. We had intended this eighth volume to be the final edition: The project had achieved all it intended, noting that—thankfully—the bad ol' COVID days are behind us. In that spirit, each contribution was softly extended to about half an hour rather than a rigid four-track requirement, facilitating a longer mix and greater opportunity for individual expression and to stretch the legs! The result is the eighth instalment: four individual selections, connected into one long and—hopefully—cohesive musical conversation. And, well, despite the six-month-long wait for Brendo to pull the finger out, it may not be the final chapter after all.
