This week I sat down with a group of BTS fans from around the world and spent two hours listening to their stories. As a lot of the media hype and attention around them has either focused on their solo efforts or been replaced by the next generation of idols, I thought it would provide some nice distance from the unprecedented levels of success they were achieving as a group a few years back. And so we explored different things together: When did they first discover BTS? What was the performance or the album that made them fall in love? How has their fandom affected their lives? What's their favorite song? How many of the dances can they do? Who's their favorite member? What makes them stand out from other groups? Before becoming a professor at Pai Chai (培材) University in South Korea, she founded and directed the CrossSound new music festival in Alaska, and the new music touring ensemble IIIZ+ (guzheng, koto, gayageum, and percussion), organizations through which she commissioned and/or premiered over 30 new works for Korean gayageum. Next to her work in contemporary music she is the first foreigner without Korean heritage to become an official government disciple in the National Heritage system, in the genre gayageum sanjo and byeongchang [伽倻琴散調/竝唱]. Other research interests include music of place, aesthetics, and contemporary “national music” performance practices in Northeast Asia in the age of AI. Tonight we travel to a country often confused with it's neighbor right across the mighty Central African river they're both named after. The Democratic People's Republic of the Congo is often confused with the nation that called Brazzaville its capital, but we head to Kinshasa tonight to hear the sounds of one of Africa's truly gifted countries when it comes to musical expression. One source of the success of K-Pop idols and groups, in Korea as well as abroad, can be found in their exceptionally active and dedicated fans. For many of them, being a fan goes beyond just listening their idols' music; it also means buying and collecting merchandise, attending fan events and live recordings, or even translating appearances of their idols for global fans. These are costly endeavors, both in terms of money and time, yet they have become a hallmark of K-Pop's fan culture. To learn more about the relationship between K-Pop idols and their fans, we spoke to Dr. Stephanie Choi. She told us about how fans act as both promoters as well as regulators of their idols' activities, and about the role that intimacy plays in this relationship. We also discussed the origins of fan groups in Korea and their evolution over the decades; the kinds of labor fans engage in to ensure the success of their idol; the rules dictating fans-idol interactions; and the services that idols provide in return to their fans. Stephanie Choi is Adjunct Assistant Professor in East Asian Studies at New York University. She earned her Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She also holds an M.A. in Ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University and a degree in Korean Music from Seoul National University. Interviews with Stephanie Choi have been featured in the New Yorker, NBC News, the Korea Herald, and the Korea Times, among others. This episode was produced in cooperation and with the support of the East Asian Studies Center at The Ohio State University and its Title VI National Resource Center grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

Is listening to K-Pop like buying sweatshop-made clothes? From rigorous childhood performance academies to long, labour-intensive contracts for young idols, does the South Korean music industry have an exploitation problem? In this two-part episode of How Music Charts, Bernie pulls the curtain back on K-Pop and the Korean music industry, showing just how successful South Korea's export strategy has been worldwide.
If you've ever used Spotify or YouTube to listen to music, you've probably stumbled upon a song in a language you don't know how to speak. But have you ever heard a song that features not just one, but 3 different languages? This week we chat with Crystal's high school friend Austin (aka Aleebi). He makes music in English, Korean, and Japanese and has garnered over 200,000 total streams on Spotify.Austin shares with us his experience as an Asian-American rapper in an increasingly global music market. Simon and Martina are passionate about the indie music scene in Korea but generally disappointed at the lack of promotion for these artists. Can the success of K-Pop bring attention to other music genres in Korea?

Where Ween meets Willie Nelson, this is weirdo, operatic guitar rock at it's strangest: expat/Korean hybrid Saure Gurken are currently playing around Seoul supporting the release of their new EP '?'. From their bio at doindie.co.kr-"Saure Gurken is a three-piece rock band based in Seoul, South Korea. Formed in 2013 by original members Vance Baryn (vocals, bass) and Quaziq (guitars), they were later joined by Josh King (drums) in 2014. Saure Gurken have released one EP (“?” 2015) and will release two more EP's in 2015 and a full album in early 2016. Like its members, Saure Gurken's sound is strange and eclectic, delving into different styles and sounds with the goal of creating musical experiences rather than simply songs. If one listens closely, they might perceive the infuence of a wide variety of artists including Tom Waits, Metallica, Operation Ivy, Mr. Bungle, and Willie Nelson. Ultimately, Saure Gurken's goal is to create music that is interesting and original which defies notions of genre." A review of their EP '?'can be found here: http://sleepingbagstudios.ca/saure-gurken-%E4%B8%8A/ For more of the band's music, go to https://sauregurken.bandcamp.com/releases
Since its rapid growth in the nineties, K-Pop has become a multi-billion dollar industry and an integral part of South Korea’s image both domestically and abroad. In stark contrast and despite support from the South Korean government, Korean traditional music, or Gugak, remains a somewhat unknown tradition in and outside Korea. How do we define Korean traditional music? What position does it hold in contemporary South Korean society? What role has the government played in its evolution since the end of the Korean War? Will Gugak follow a path similar to K-Pop – a product designed for export – or is it still a living and thriving tradition? To answer these questions, we had the pleasure of interviewing Prof. Hilary Vanessa Finchum-Sung. Prof. Finchum-Sung earned her Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from Indiana University in 2002 and is now Associate Professor in the Department of Korean Music at Seoul National University. She has served as the Chair of the Interdisciplinary Major in Music Education at Seoul National University, and formerly worked as a lecturer and researcher at the University of San Francisco and UC Berkeley. She has also published in several academic journals, including Ethnomusicology, The World of Music, and the Seoul Journal of Korean Studies.

Over two nights in New York, Asia Society presented two styles of traditional Korean music. The first evening was dedicated to four musicians performing sanjo — a solo form of virtuosic traditional music with roots in indigenous shamanism and folk music, while the second concert was devoted to pansori, a solo sung storytelling form, in a showcase for the male maestro Lim Hyeun-bin.
