Of course, Brexit is a tragic phenomenon for both the EU and Ukraine, for it is the first time, in the history of European integration and expansion, that a Member State decided to say no to the European project (excluding colonial territories that opted out after gaining independence). This, in terms, poses multiple implications including the shrinkage of collective EU forces, economic repercussions following a state that is exiting the largest single market in the world, but it also puts into question the future of the idea of a collective European identity – an identity to which Ukraine aspires to. In this case, Brexit should not be looked at as a positive phenomenon for Ukraine, yet at the same time, given that the process has become, for the most part, inevitable, one might as well consider the opportunities that this inevitability presents.

After episodes about the Hong Kong protests, Chinese authoritarianism, and the Israel/Palestine conflict, we turn our attention to Europe and the United Kingdom's departure from the European Union.Other than the word, spork, Brexit might be the world's current favorite portmanteau*, or combination of two words to make a new word. When the British-Exit, or Brexit, from the EU became a possibility, the messy divisiveness of how to accomplish the exit became evident. We discuss the parliamentary vote this week that gave Boris Johnson and the conservative party control in the UK. Their platform was, "GET BREXIT DONE" so that will be happening sooner rather than later. What does this mean for Ireland and Scotland? What does it mean for Europe? Can the UK stay together? England hasn't been this divided in hundreds of years. All will be discussed. To prepare for this episode, we began by learning as much vocabulary around the issue as possible. We read several articles about the past and present and looked closely at the upcoming parliamentary elections which happened to be December 12, one day before our recording/editing date. We prepared for several different outcomes depending on who won. We watched documentaries, made spidea webs, studied maps, used the question formulation technique and countless sticky notes to organize our thinking and learning. We hope that you find this episode clear, concise, and informative. We worked to stay objective, fair, but also insightful about the implications and their causes. We hope you enjoy this episode. *Other popular Portmanteaus:podcast = iPod + broadcastemail = electronic + mailsmog = smoke and fogsitcom = situational + comedyclasp = clutch + graspsplatter = splash + spattersnark = snide + remarktaxicab = taximeter (tax) + cabriolet (carriage)electrocute = electric + executebiopic = biography + pictureavionics = aviation + electronicsVelcro = velvet + crochet (small hook in french)breathalyzer = breath + analyzerfrankenfood = frankenstein + foodbromance = brother + romanceshopaholic = shop + alcoholicromcom = romance + comedybrunch = breakfast + lunchspork = spoon + forkemoticon = emotions + iconsalphanumeric = alphabetic + numbericfavicon = favorite + iconphablet = phone + tabletnetizen = Internet + citizenfreeware = free + softwaremalware = malicious + softwarewebisode = web + episodeWifi = wireless + fidelitymobisode = mobile + episodewebinar = web + seminarnetiquette = Internet + etiquettewikipedia = wiki + encyclopediaYelp = Yellow pages + helpfrenemy = friend + enemyginormous = gigantic + enormouschillax = chill + relaxbollywood = bombay + hollywoodmockumentary = mock + documentarymetrosexual = metropolitan + heterosexualcyborg = cybernetic + organismSpam = spiced + hamroyalty-free music by bensound.com

Will it be the end of the global economy as we know it? Will it be Britain against the Continent, again? Will the US even feel it?

In fact, they’ve just had another historic vote. William Walton of Northumbria University brings us up to date.

Markets are in an uproar today after the UK voted to leave the EU. But has anyone bothered to look at what happens next? I think a lot of people believe that a British separation from the EU is inevitable, even imminent but nothing could be further from the truth. By my estimation, it's going to take at least two and a half years for the UK to make it's transition and that's assuming there are no political shenanigans that come up. Considering that a mere 2% separated the winners from the losers, it would not be at all unlikely to see some MP's step up to block the referendum from being implemented. What you need to understand is that we are years away from any change coming to the trading relationship between the UK and EU, and a lot can happen between now and then. From the EU discussion, we'll move to guns where I'll play some interesting comments from Charlie Rangel, who apparently believes he deserves to be protected by guns while you should be forced to fend for yourself. It's a crazy backward world out there, and it's getting crazier by the day. Don't miss a minute of today's show. You won't here this type of commentary anywhere else in media. JasonSupport the show.

Now the EU referendum has been announced, there is one question which I am starting to hear over and over again: How will Brexit affect my investments? They specialise in multi-asset investing, bringing institutional investing techniques to ordinary people like you and me. 7IM put their name to my show and to my site because they believe in what I'm doing, trying to get decent, easy-to-understand financial information out to the world. I'm very grateful to them for their support. You can see what they're up to at 7im.co.uk How will Brexit affect my investments? Since 1973 the UK has been a member of the European Economic Community, and we voted in a referendum to stay within it in 1975. Well, I didn't, as I was born that year! Since then, the EEC has changed beyond all recognition and now, on June 23rd we're going to be given the chance to vote again on whether we should stay or leave what is now called the EU. As you can imagine, my clients have been asking the question - what will the British Exit, or Brexit mean for investments? So I have been reading, listening and watching what I can to try and get on top of the pros and cons of each camp. The first person I called was Justin Urquhart Stewart, who returns to the MeaningfulMoney podcast for the fifth time! In this session, you'll discover: What affect the announcement of the EU referendum has already had on investments Justin's view on the pros and cons of a British exit from the EU Some clear parallels between the pressures currently being faced by the EU and those faced in ancient Rome Some of the key drivers of the current market volatility, apart from the EU referendum How Justin Urquhart Stewart is planning to vote in the referendum The best plan for riding out market volatility, whatever the result I think there are so many facets to this debate and it will depend very much on your point of view. And it was ever thus, right? We'll make the decision based on what it means for us, perhaps at the expense of the greater good. Ah well, we'll see, sometime on June 24th probably, what the outcome will be Resources mentioned in this show Transcript: As always, there is a full transcript of this show available by clicking the big blue button below: Join the conversation I love to read and respond to your comments, so please do join in and share. Question: How are you planning to vote, and why?
