In this episode we explore some of the emotional and psychological life of international governance. Professor Daniel Laqua, Professor Dan Gorman and Dr. Anne-Isabelle Richard talk about GLO, a transatlantic research project examining how civil society, activists, and NGOs have campaigned to build, shape, reform or put an end to international organizations from the early 20th century to the early 2000s. They discuss findings from the project about emotional experiences such as love, hate, trust, and sense of belonging in this context, and consider the way people relate to and through international institutions through psychodynamic concepts of projection and transference. Listen to examples from the League of Nations, United Nations Associations, Jubilee 2000, and the Council of Europe. Learn about the archival research methods, and what grassroots diplomacy suggests about the possibilities of change. Resources: Ask a Librarian! Ask an Archivist! Phil Anderson, Senior Lecturer at Northumbria University, joins the Forensic Focus Podcast to talk about the Forensic Focus International Well-Being Study. Phil and host Paul Gullon-Scott unpack the findings from a survey of 179 digital forensic investigators across the UK, US, Australia, Canada, Germany, South Africa, India, and beyond. The study used validated psychometric instruments to put hard numbers behind what the profession has been hearing anecdotally for years. Paul and Phil dig into the emerging impact of AI-generated CSAM, where 60% of respondents reported finding it slightly more distressing than real material — and where victim identification is beginning to break down as the realism of generated imagery improves. They also examine the most clinically significant finding in the study: 20% of digital forensic investigators reported active suicidal or self-harm ideation at a clinically significant frequency, roughly four times the general population rate. Set against 61% of respondents lacking access to good-quality support services, alongside hypervigilance, sleep disturbance, retention risk, and physical health symptoms, the picture is one Forensic Focus is taking directly to the UK Home Office. #DigitalForensics #DFIR #MentalHealth #InvestigatorWellbeing #CSAM #AIGeneratedCSAM #LawEnforcement 00:00 Welcome and Study Intro 00:38 Meet Phil and Motivation 03:23 Survey Scope and Global Reach 07:53 Who Responded and Why It Matters 09:38 Methodology and Validated Measures 11:38 Workload Pressures and AI Factor 15:21 Top Stressors and Management Levers 20:29 Burnout Risk and Retention Crisis 25:56 AI Generated CSAM Findings 31:36 AI Victim Misidentification 32:42 Investigator Stress Burden  33:27 Tech Outpacing Regulation 36:28 PTSD Symptom Findings 38:06 Judgment Under Trauma 40:14 Suicidal Ideation Data 45:16 Support Services Crisis 46:42 Physical Health Impacts 50:03 Report Next Steps

Episode 73 — Sleep Paralysis Experiences Part 1 explores one of the most terrifying and mysterious nighttime phenomena through real listener accounts sent to the Haunted UK Podcast. In this episode, we dive into deeply unsettling experiences shared by those who have found themselves awake but unable to move, often accompanied by shadowy figures, oppressive presences, and the overwhelming sense that something is in the room. Some of these stories were submitted by participants involved in a sleep paralysis research study conducted by Dr Emma Barkus at Northumbria University, offering a fascinating link between scientific research and personal paranormal experience. Across multiple accounts, striking similarities begin to emerge — sensations of waking, false awakenings, figures at the bedside, and the blurred boundary between dream and reality. These listener experiences highlight how sleep paralysis continues to sit between science and mystery. Are these episodes purely neurological, or do they sometimes feel like genuine encounters? If you're fascinated by true paranormal stories, shadow figures, mysterious phenomena, night terrors, and scary stories rooted in real experiences, Sleep Paralysis Experiences explores a chilling collection of accounts where waking up may not mean you're truly awake.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/haunted-uk-podcast-history-hauntings-and-the-unexplained--6759967/support.

American International Pictures had made money with Italian films such as Black Sunday (1960) but would often need to oversee many changes to make the films suitable for an American audience. Their solution was to provide a script and co-produce a film so they could control the content.   The film had a small budget of around $200,000 and although it definitely has its fair share of Schlock, Bava had a reputation for doing a lot on a small budget.  My guests unravel why Mario Bava's reputation and love for this film continue to grow.  Scott Higgins is Professor of Film at Wesleyan University as well as being the Curator of the Wesleyan Cinema Archives.  Russ Hunter is an Assistant Professor in Film & Television Studies at Northumbria University. Hopkins was known as the Witch Finder General in the 1640's, but he was only one of many people who were 'employed' to hunt down and kill witches.Thankfully, with our more modern outlook and understanding of the occult and witchcraft, it's not always necessarily seen as a practice of evil intent.Presented by Steve HollowayProduced by Pink Flamingo Home StudiosDo you have an interesting story which features the paranormal? This is the central question of Hindu Nationalism in the Indian Diaspora: Transnational Politics and British Multiculturalism, a 2023 book by the historian Edward Anderson. The book interrogates the distinctive resonance Hindutva ideology has overseas, and the multiple ways in which the diaspora engages with British politics and society, while sustaining connections back home in India.Anderson is assistant professor in History at Northumbria University in Newcastle. Women have been left on the sidelines when it comes to sport and exercise research. Research finds a measly 6% of studies in the field have exclusively focused on women. That's bad. But for menopausal women, it's worse. Of that 6%, menopausal women account for only 9% of total study participants, with only 16% of female-only studies focusing exclusively on older women. This despite the fact that 40+ women have been lining up in greater numbers in sports of all kinds. We deserve better and this week's guest, women's health and performance researcher, Kelly McNulty, PhD, has a lot to say about it. We talk about what she has learned studying menopausal women of all walks of life and how education and information can make our lives exponentially better. Kelly McNulty, PhD, is a research assistant at Northumbria University currently investigating endocrinological, lifestyle, and psychosocial determinants of brain health outcomes in female veterans. She is a graduate from Northumbria University, with both a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Sport and Exercise Science and a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Strength & Conditioning. Her research interests are in the area of female physiology; the menstrual cycle, hormonal contraception, breast health, pelvic floor health, pregnancy, menopause, as applied to sport and exercise. Kelly is the founder and podcast host of 'The Period of the Period'; a digital education platform on a mission to change the narrative for women's health and performance in sport and exercise by promoting awareness, increasing evidence-based education & providing support.ResourcesExperience of the menopause transition in Irish women and how it impacts motivators, facilitators, and barriers to physical activity engagement hereInvisibility of female participants in midlife and beyond in sport and exercise science research: a call to action here“Invisible Sportswomen 2.0”—Digging Deeper Into Gender Bias in Sport and Exercise Science Research: Author Gender, Editorial Board Gender, and Research Quality hereJoin the Feisty Girona Gravel Camp: https://www.thomsonbiketours.com/trips/feisty-girona-gravel-camp/ Subscribe to the Feisty 40+ newsletter: https://feistymedia.ac-page.com/feisty-40-sign-up-page Follow Us on Instagram:Feisty Menopause: @feistymenopause Hit Play Not Pause Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/807943973376099 Support our Partners:Hettas: Use code FEISTY20 for 20% off at https://hettas.com/ Midi Health: You Deserve to Feel Great. If you ever find yourself asking “What's left?” you're in good company. Today's left is often indistinguishable from neoliberal centrism. Steve's guests are Simon Winlow and Steve Hall, authors of the book, The Death of the Left: Why We Must Begin from the Beginning Again. They talk about the historical shifts that have led to ideological collapse, disconnection from the working class and the embrace of individualism over collective action. The conversation emphasizes the urgent need for a revival of working-class politics that transcend identity divisions and focus on collective struggles against economic neoliberalism and austerity.Simon Winlow is Professor of Social Sciences at Northumbria University, UK. A fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, his work is particularly well known in the fields of criminology, sociology and contemporary political analysis. Laurie Taylor explores the fascination for true crime stories. He's joined by Jennifer Fleetwood, Senior Lecturer in Criminology at City, University of London, whose latest work considers the remarkable rise in the number of people who speak publicly about their experience of crime. Personal accounts used to be confined to the police station and the courtroom, but today bookshops heave with autobiographies by prisoners, criminals, police and barristers while streaming platforms host hours of interviews so how easy is it for the 'truth' to come out?Louise Wattis, Assistant Professor in the Department: Social Sciences ·at Northumbria University, Newcastle looks at the skyrocketing interest in true crime as a form of popular entertainment. What do we know about the appeal of 'Hardman' biographies of violent criminals, a hugely popular subgenre, particularly for male readers?Producer: Jayne Egerton
