How and why did Hindu nationalism become popular among India's diaspora after India's independence in 1947? This is the central question of Hindu Nationalism in the Indian Diaspora: Transnational Politics and British Multiculturalism, a 2023 book by the historian Edward Anderson. The book interrogates the distinctive resonance Hindutva ideology has overseas, and the multiple ways in which the diaspora engages with British politics and society, while sustaining connections back home in India.Anderson is assistant professor in History at Northumbria University in Newcastle. He was previously the Smuts Research Fellow in Commonwealth Studies at the University of Cambridge, where he obtained a PhD in History.Anderson joins Milan on the show this week to discuss the trajectory of Indian migration to Britain, the founding of the first overseas Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) shakha, and the Emergency's impact amongst the diaspora. Plus, the two discuss the role of the diaspora in funding politics and the emergence of “neo-Hindutva.”Episode notes:1. “A Reappraisal of Indira Gandhi's Life—and Legacy (with Srinath Raghavan),” Grand Tamasha, June 11, 2025.2. “The Secret to Indian Americans' Success (with Meenakshi Ahamed),” Grand Tamasha, June 4, 2025.3. “The Indian American Vote in 2024 (with Sumitra Badrinathan and Devesh Kapur),” Grand Tamasha, November 6, 2024.4. “What to read about Hindutva,” The Economist, April 5, 2024.

Located on the banks of the Mississippi river, New Orleans is famous for many things such as jazz music, Creole and Cajun cuisine, and a rich cultural heritage that blends African, Native American, Spanish, Caribbean, and French ancestry. Nicknamed “The Big Easy”, New Orleans conjures up images of Mardi Gras parades with their colourful purple, green, and gold bead necklaces, and bands walking the streets playing to roaring crowds… But the joyful, celebratory side of New Orleans has an equally dark, sombre, and much more frightening side…This is Haunted UK Abroad, and today we visit the Southern state of Louisianna in the U.S. and, specifically, the – by all accounts very haunted – city of New Orleans.Do you have an interesting story which you'd be willing to share with the show? So, grab a hot chocolate, maybe a tea, maybe something stronger … because this is Haunted UK Podcast's 'Short Haunts –Angel or Apparition.'Many of us go through life with little or no interaction with the paranormal, whilst others seem like beacons, who cannot help but attract activity. As we've heard so many times on this podcast, the supernatural and paranormal can become embroiled in the lives of so many different people...scientists, doctors, care-workers, lawyers. It doesn't care who's lives it touches, and whilst many of the stories which we've heard, and researched, consist of accounts which left those at the centre of the activity completely terrified, there are a handful of stories which...go against that grain.Presented by Steve HollowayProduced by Pink Flamingo Home StudiosScript edited by Marie Waller Proofreading Do you have an interesting story which features the paranormal? Pain is the subject of this month's episode, something that can affect people with Parkinson's in a huge variety of different ways. Dr Jenni Naisby, Assistant Professor of Physiotherapy at Northumbria University has been collecting a vast array or personal experiences of pain in her research looking into how the condition can affect pain processing at multiple levels of the central nervous system, and then find ways of classifying it by its mechanisms. By understanding how pain behaves she hopes to find better ways of treating it. ‘One night, in the early hours of the morning, I was suddenly awoken – and believe me I was wide awake – with the realisation that ‘something' was standing in the doorway of my bedroom. Women have been left on the sidelines when it comes to sport and exercise research. Research finds a measly 6% of studies in the field have exclusively focused on women. That's bad. But for menopausal women, it's worse. Of that 6%, menopausal women account for only 9% of total study participants, with only 16% of female-only studies focusing exclusively on older women. This despite the fact that 40+ women have been lining up in greater numbers in sports of all kinds. We deserve better and this week's guest, women's health and performance researcher, Kelly McNulty, PhD, has a lot to say about it. We talk about what she has learned studying menopausal women of all walks of life and how education and information can make our lives exponentially better. Kelly McNulty, PhD, is a research assistant at Northumbria University currently investigating endocrinological, lifestyle, and psychosocial determinants of brain health outcomes in female veterans. She is a graduate from Northumbria University, with both a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Sport and Exercise Science and a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Strength & Conditioning. Her research interests are in the area of female physiology; the menstrual cycle, hormonal contraception, breast health, pelvic floor health, pregnancy, menopause, as applied to sport and exercise. Kelly is the founder and podcast host of 'The Period of the Period'; a digital education platform on a mission to change the narrative for women's health and performance in sport and exercise by promoting awareness, increasing evidence-based education & providing support.ResourcesExperience of the menopause transition in Irish women and how it impacts motivators, facilitators, and barriers to physical activity engagement hereInvisibility of female participants in midlife and beyond in sport and exercise science research: a call to action here“Invisible Sportswomen 2.0”—Digging Deeper Into Gender Bias in Sport and Exercise Science Research: Author Gender, Editorial Board Gender, and Research Quality hereJoin the Feisty Girona Gravel Camp: https://www.thomsonbiketours.com/trips/feisty-girona-gravel-camp/ Subscribe to the Feisty 40+ newsletter: https://feistymedia.ac-page.com/feisty-40-sign-up-page Follow Us on Instagram:Feisty Menopause: @feistymenopause Hit Play Not Pause Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/807943973376099 Support our Partners:Hettas: Use code FEISTY20 for 20% off at https://hettas.com/ Midi Health: You Deserve to Feel Great. If you ever find yourself asking “What's left?” you're in good company. Today's left is often indistinguishable from neoliberal centrism. Steve's guests are Simon Winlow and Steve Hall, authors of the book, The Death of the Left: Why We Must Begin from the Beginning Again. They talk about the historical shifts that have led to ideological collapse, disconnection from the working class and the embrace of individualism over collective action. The conversation emphasizes the urgent need for a revival of working-class politics that transcend identity divisions and focus on collective struggles against economic neoliberalism and austerity.Simon Winlow is Professor of Social Sciences at Northumbria University, UK. A fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, his work is particularly well known in the fields of criminology, sociology and contemporary political analysis. ‘As I was coming down the road, I saw what I thought were the lights of an oncoming car, so I stopped to let it pass. After a few moments I flashed my lights but got no response so, thinking the car may have broken down in the snow or got stuck; I walked into the woods towards the lights to help. As I neared, I saw there had been an accident and ran to the car which had struck a telegraph pole, knocking it into the woods. I pulled the car door open …'This is episode 60 – Part 2 – of the Haunted UK Podcast, and we're back with another jam-packed episode of listeners' stories – hold tight because this is The Crash and Other Listeners' Stories. As usual, the response from all of you fantastic listeners has been phenomenal. A huge thank you to each and every single one of you who have taken the time out to type your stories up and send them in to the show. Kentucky Chronicles: A Podcast of the Kentucky Historical Society
Loretta Lynn rose to musical fame through songs such as “Coal Miner's Daughter,” “Trouble in Paradise,” and “The Pill.” But have you ever wondered how her Kentucky roots influenced her lyrics? Join us today for a discussion with a former research fellow who explores how Lynn's upbringing in Johnson County indelibly shaped her artistic output. Dr. Brian Ward is a Professor in American Studies at Northumbria University. His previously published books include (1) Just My Soul Responding: Rhythm and Blues, Black Consciousness and Race Relations, (2) Media, Culture, and the Modern African American Freedom Struggle, (3) Radio and the Struggle for Civil Rights in the South, and (4) A&R Pioneers: The Architects of American Roots Music on Record. In this episode, he shares research from his article in the Register of the Kentucky Historical Society: “Sex, Drugs, and Country Music: Loretta Lynn, Gender Politics, and the Health Environment in Mid-Twentieth Century Rural Kentucky.” Read more about Dr. Ward's research in Volume 122, Number 3&4, Summer/Autumn 2024 of The Register, out now, and available on Project Muse: https://muse.jhu.edu/issue/54237 Kentucky Chronicles is inspired by the work of researchers worldwide who have contributed to the scholarly journal, The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society, in publication since 1903. https://history.ky.gov/explore/catalog-research-tools/register-of-the-kentucky-historical-society Hosted by Dr. Daniel J. In episode 277 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Earl John Charlton. Earl is currently employed by Northumbria University as a professional with lived experience. However, prior to that he has worked as an outreach worker and a seller for The Big Issue, one of the most important charities in the UK for giving homeless people an income, dignity and pride. Earl spent 18 years of his life being homeless. His start in life began with trauma and violence as he witnessed his dad domestically abusing his mum from the ages of 3-13 years old. He was subsequently placed into the care system but ran away from it at 14 and became homeless for the first time until he was 19. He became a heroine and crack cocaine addict and stayed an addict for the next 19 years, as well as an addiction to alcohol for 20 years. He then became involved in drug gangs, running county lines for them to earn money and feed his addiction. His rock bottom moment came in 2013/14 after he had been in London for a few years when he put himself in serious danger after a dispute with one of the gangs. He managed to escape London through a friend and went back to the North East. By the time he had beat heroine and crack cocaine addiction in 2014, alcohol addiction in 2016 and a methadone addiction in 2018, Early had nearly died twice and nearly lost his leg three times. We came across Earl through his interview in a hugely powerful film by Lorna Tucker called ‘Someone's Daughter, Someone's Son', which highlights the plight of many homeless people across the UK. Since Earl has gotten clean, he has started giving back to his South Shields community by working as an outreach worker and putting on open-mic nights with musicians from the local community. He also got national media coverage when UK Rock artist Sam Fender came across Earl's story and they had a conversation you can find on YouTube. That has culminated in one song on Sam's upcoming new album ‘People Watching' being about Earl called ‘Crumbling Empire'. In this episode we chart Earl's life journey, from witnessing the domestic abuse, to the negative impact not having a positive father figure in his life had on him, being homeless for 18 years, becoming a father and then losing access to his son when his partner left him one day, the throes of addiction and his recovery to where he is now. We then discuss all the advocacy and community work he has done since getting clean, meeting Sam Fender and much more. DR TOM MAY on PLAY FOR TODAYFirst broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on February 23rd 2025.This week I'm joined by another new voice for the show, DOCTOR TOM MAY from NORTHUMBRIA UNIVERSITY who I was put in touch with because he's written his PhD thesis all about the BBC's long running drama series PLAY FOR TODAY which ran throughout the 1970s and well into the early eighties and presented an eclectic mix of so many iconic dramas many of which are still talked about in hushed and awed tones even today.I was very kindly allowed access to read his thesis, and it really is a fascinating and highly detailed piece of work. DOCTOR TOM MAY has done the kind of astonishingly thorough in-depth research that TV archivists adore, and, luckily for us, he is planning on publishing a book based upon this fascinating topic, which should already have you eagerly anticipating being able to get hold of a copy.PLAY FOR TODAY was such an iconic and eclectic series, written by perhaps the most well-known writers of that generation, directed by some of the giants of the art, and starring many of the most iconic actors of its time, that we can probably only touch upon it in the most general terms today, but I hope you'll enjoy our efforts if you stick around for the next hour.PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.
My grandfather, being the gentleman he is, graciously offered to give them a lift. He drove the women home and, in true Irish fashion, they invited him in for a cup of tea to say thanks. My grandfather accepted their offer and went into the house for a cup of tea. Laurie Taylor explores the fascination for true crime stories. He's joined by Jennifer Fleetwood, Senior Lecturer in Criminology at City, University of London, whose latest work considers the remarkable rise in the number of people who speak publicly about their experience of crime. Personal accounts used to be confined to the police station and the courtroom, but today bookshops heave with autobiographies by prisoners, criminals, police and barristers while streaming platforms host hours of interviews so how easy is it for the 'truth' to come out?Louise Wattis, Assistant Professor in the Department: Social Sciences ·at Northumbria University, Newcastle looks at the skyrocketing interest in true crime as a form of popular entertainment. What do we know about the appeal of 'Hardman' biographies of violent criminals, a hugely popular subgenre, particularly for male readers?Producer: Jayne Egerton
Dr. Jamie Tallent is the Director of the Human Performance Research Group at the University of Essex, previously holding the position of Associate Professor in Strength and Conditioning at St Mary's University. Jamie earned his PhD from Northumbria University, UK, focusing on corticospinal adaptations from eccentric and concentric resistance training muscle actions. Jamie has worked in professional sport, as the lead strength and conditioning coach at Derbyshire County Cricket Club. Jamie has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications and numerous book chapters. His research, a mixture of applied and mechanistic studies, includes leading various projects in collaboration with International Cricket Teams, Premiership Football clubs, International Rugby Teams, and world-leading ballet schools and companies. Recently, Jamie has also begun to explore the role of strength and conditioning in children with cerebral palsy. QUOTES “Micro-dosing is just splitting up your training sessions, your volume of work into small manageable chunks” “I'm better putting in small doses that are going to enhance an athletes performance over long periods of time, rather than that scheduling in longer sessions that could affect their training in the subsequent days” “I think the recommendation for micro-dosing I'd almost give is that go to higher rep work as with lower rep work, maybe that's not as easy to microdose in time constrained situations because you're going to have to spend so much time warming up'” “What we've shown in ballet is that the groups that are training three times a week of 15 minutes versus 1 time a week of 45 minutes are getting slightly greater adaptations in strength, in jumping ability, in counter-movement jump.” “I think it's important how we package things as S & C coaches and I think it's important that the athletes are aware that micro-dosing is still going to help them. The narrative to athletes is even if you do one set, even if you do two sets, it's still a positive kind of thing for your sport.” SHOWNOTES 1) Jamie's journey into sport science and strength and conditioning 2) The definition of microdosing and its use to reduce risk of injury or soreness 3) The philosophy of getting as much work as possible into athletes and how microdosing aligns with this 4) How time constraints influence microdosing sets and rep schemes 5) The timing of microdosing S&C around sports training sessions and “clustering” sessions in a training week 6) Examples of microdosing in cricket and ballet and the benefits of microdosing for training absenteeism 7) Managing your communication in different environments and the future of data analytics PEOPLE MENTIONED Glyn Howatson Nathan Spencer Duncan French Jess Turner
In his new book Ten Days in Harlem: Fidel Castro and the Making of the 1960s (Faber, 2020), Simon Hall, a Professor of Modern History at the University of Leeds, colorfully details an extraordinary visit by Fidel Castro to New York in the Autumn of 1960 for the opening of the UN General Assembly. Holding court from the iconic Hotel Theresa in Harlem, Castro's riotous stay in New York saw him connect with leaders from within the local African American community, as well as political and cultural luminaries such as Gamal Abdel Nasser, Nikita Khrushchev, Kwame Nkrumah and Allen Ginsberg. Through exploring the local and global impact of these ten days, Hall recovers Castro's visit as a critical turning point in the trajectory of the Cold War and the development of the 'The Sixties.' E. James West is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in American History at Northumbria University. He is the author of Ebony Magazine and Lerone Bennett Jr.: Popular Black History in Postwar America (Illinois, 2020). Learn more about your ad choices. Send us a textIn 1985, the nine-hour film Shoah by Claude Lanzmann hit theaters. This powerful production featured survivor testimony as well as secretly filmed interviews with Nazi perpetrators. It's length and the way it was shot challenges our understanding of what a Holocaust film is. Is it a documentary film or something else? How has it impacted both our understanding of the event as well as the ways in which others have made films and movies about the Holocaust? In this discussion with Dominic Williams, we dive into all these questions and more! Dominic Williams is an assistant professor of history at Northumbria University in Newcastle, UK. Abbie and John discuss learning to appreciate the process of "unbecoming" and celebrating (not judging) others for their experiences and growth; using John's PPRR (Problems, Potential, Resources, and Restraints) to understand the many, many layers of everything we do; and exploring explore the wonders of Systemic Therapy. John shares the things he has learned from those he works with, including the resoluteness of the human spirit, experiencing real awe, and how he learned to be less certain and seek clarity instead.
