Your morning briefing, the business news you need in just 15 minutes. On today's podcast: (1) Confronted with fresh warnings from financial markets, business leaders and top advisers, President Donald Trump this week eased off on two of his frequent punching bags: Jerome Powell and China. He turned down his aggressive rhetoric a day after meeting with executives from Walmart Inc., Home Depot Inc. and Target Corp., who said import taxes could disrupt supply chains and raise the prices of goods, according to people familiar with the matter (2) Citadel founder Ken Griffin said President Donald Trump’s trade war has derailed business leaders’ plans to spend the next four years focusing on growth.Griffin had previously criticized Trump’s tariffs even though he said he agrees with the president’s assessment of the issues that the US faces. (3) President Trump has mused that he could announce tariff rates for countries, including China, “over the next two to three weeks.” At the same time, Trump said the deadline would ultimately depend on whether China engaged. (4) The UK isn’t in a hurry to strike a deal with the US that lowers the tariffs President Donald Trump’s administration has slapped on British imports, Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves said, highlighting that Britian is prepared to stand by red lines on safety standards. (5) BNP Paribas SA reported record income from equities trading as the French lender rode the global market volatility in the first quarter of this year. The French lender on Thursday reported a 42% surge in equities trading revenue to €1.19 billion ($1.35 billion) in the three months through March, beating even the most optimistic analyst estimate. It was also the highest in data compiled by Bloomberg and going back to 2007. (6) Companies moving office in London last year leased more expansion space than they have done since 2019, just the year before the coronavirus pandemic upended white-collar working practices and sent shock waves through commercial real estate markets. Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 21ú lá de mí Aibreán, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1978 tháinig an nuacht amach go raibh an GAA sa Tuaisceart chun a dheontas de 130 míle punt a fháil ar ais ón Bhreatain. I 1989 tháinig sé amach go mbeadh an praghas den pheitreal chun dul suas chuig 12p a ghalún an mhí tar éis. I 1989 chaill 37 duine a bpost I mBaile an Mhuilinn. I 2006 bhí andúileach drugaí agus daoine ólta cúisithe de bharr go raibh siad ag tógáil am ó na haltraí agus gur rinne siad ionsaí ar na haltraí ag an ospidéal in Inis. Sin The Bangles le Eternal Flame – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 1989. Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 2002 chuaigh Oasis chuig uimhir a haon sna cairteacha lena hamhrán Hindu Times. Chuaigh a amhrán le Ellie Goulding darbh ainm I Need Your Love chuig uimhir 7. An t-amhránaí a rinne é sin cheana ná Michael Jackson – lena albam Bad agus Dangerous. Agus ar deireadh breithlá daoine cáiliúla ar an lá seo rugadh aisteoir Robbie Amell I gCeanada I 1988 agus rugadh aisteoir James McAvoy san Albain ar an lá seo I 1979 agus seo chuid de na rudaí a rinne sé. Beidh mé ar ais libh amárach le heagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo. That was The Bangles with Eternal Flame – the biggest song on this day in 1989. Onto music news on this day In 2002 Oasis went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Hindu Times', the bands sixth UK No.1 and the first single to be released from their fifth album Heathen Chemistry. 2013 Calvin Harris made chart history by becoming the first artist to have eight top 10 hits from one studio album. His track 'I Need Your Love', featuring singer Ellie Goulding, climbed to No.7 on the Official UK Chart. The Eagles have parted ways with Britian Covey which has some in the city down but it also asks the question who will return the punts next season?
Sir Winston Churchill, who led Britian through its darkest hours, was a man of many notable accomplishments. He is recognized as one of the great leaders in world history. But of his life's work, he said, “My most brilliant achievement was my ability to be able to persuade my wife to marry me.” He and his beloved Clementine were married in 1908 and remained married until his death 56 years later. Of course, many couples have been married longer than the esteemed prime minister. According to Guinness World Records, the record is 86 years, 9 months, and 16 days, and...Article Link
“While I was doing the Spine, even though I was on my own on the Pennine Way, it felt like I had the other Black Trail Runners around me.”What started as a reluctant attempt to stay active quickly became a passion for Rebecca Devereux. Her journey was fast and within three years she was standing on the cusp of one of Britian's most grueling races. The Winter Spine Race is notoriously difficult. It also had a really convenient finish line just a few minutes from Rebecca's house. It was a challenge she couldn't resist and so she was in. Community Trail Running is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. As much as the race was about personal triumph, it was also about community. Black Trail Runners had been crucial to her growth in trail running. When she first stood at the start line of a race a year into her running journey, she was the only person of colour. It was an experience that left her feeling isolated, despite being used to predominately white spaces in her career and community. The disconnect sat with her until she met Sabrina Pace-Humphries at a talk and heard more about Black Trail Runners. That sense of solidarity gave Rebecca the strength she needed, knowing that she wasn't just running for herself. This new community gave Rebecca energy and a sense of belonging in the sport, and this helped her push herself into such a challenging race."I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Black Trail Runners. I wouldn't have been in that race. I wouldn't be on this podium. They've been such an important part of my running journey.”It was awesome chatting with Rebecca and hearing her story. It's so incredible how fast she's taken to the sport and amazing to think what else she might accomplish! I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did.Trail Running Film FestivalWe're incredibly excited to be hosting the Trail Running Film Festival once more. Tonight, I am joined by Kiwi Keasha as we discuss the ghost haunting England's most haunted village: Pluckley.
Send me a messageMeasuring less than one square mile, the island of Heligoland in the North Sea, just 30 miles off the north German coast, is an easily forgotten British colony. But, this Frisian (not German) peaking island of 3,000 inhabitants was part of the British Empire from 1814 to 1890.Support My ShowHeligoland had its own British governor (or.Lt. governor), its own flag incorporating the Union flag, and from 1867 issued its own stamps with Queen Victoria's head on them.During British rule, the island became a spa resort attracting the cream of European society. The laid-back colony, became a hub for German liberals, avoiding the more draconiangovernments in places like Prussia. One of these liberal was the poet, August Heinrich Hoffman von Fallersleben.Whilst staying on the island in 1841 he wrote a poem entitled “Das Lied der Deutschen”Put to a tune previously written by Joseph Hayden 40 years before, it has become the German National Anthem. In 1890 in a bizarre land deal, Britian gave up the island to Kaiser Wilhelm II's Germany in return for recognition of her colonial ambitions in Uganda, Kenya & Zanzibar.During both the First and Second World Wars the island was heavily fortified by the Germans.During WW2, it suffered from a 1,000 bomber raid from the RAF and after the war, in 1947 the British conduscted one of the largest ever non-nuclear explosions to destroy German fortifications once and for all (operation Big Bang).Nowadays, Heligoland, with a population of just over 1,000 is part of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein.Support the show

https://notesonfilm1.com/2024/11/29/pofcrit-podcast-2024-dylan-day-on-trainspotting-danny-boyle-1996/ Adapted from the 1993 novel by Irvine Welsh, Danny Boyle's Trainspotting is as whimsical as it is putrid. One of the most iconic and provocative films of the 1990s, it serves to examine the life of heroin addict Mark Renton and his addict friends as they endlessly search for the next hit. With an unrivalled energy and an unforgettable soundtrack, we seek to dig deeper into this film's messages and influences of the film, its context within the “Britpop” movement, its allusions to Thatcher's Britian, its representations of addiction beyond heroin and so on. We take a look at how effective the audio-visual style of Trainspotting is at conveying the visceral experience of drug addiction and how it is unique in its representation of addiction. Join us as we talk about all this and more.

In this episode we speak with Scottish Stonelifting stud Jamie Gorrian! We discuss his close relationship with Scotland's historical stones which he garnered through hundreds of lits and dozens of self organized stone tours. Jamie is also the organizer of the McGregor Stonelifting Games, Scotland's Strongest Stonelifter, and Britian's Strongest Stonelifter (to name a few!!!). Through these competitions he has introduced countless people to Stonelifting and has made a point to teach new and experienced lifters alike about the intensely important topic of treating historical stones with respect. This is a central theme of this episode, which is timely due to some of the unsavoury lifting practices that have come to the forefront in the community as of late. By the end of the episode, we are hoping that as a community we are encouraged to reflect on our own relationship with lifting historical stones and make a commitment to lead by example as new eyes rapidly continue to find this incredible strength and cultural practice.

Senior Editor Alona Ferber is joined by international affairs expert, and Prospect contributing editor, Isabel Hilton to discuss. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
‘The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; and they that dwell in the land of the shadow of Brexit, upon them hath the light shined.' (Isaiah 9, v.2 with only one word changed) In retrospect, the melodies and lyrics of Handel's Messiah appear quite appropriate for this most non-Messianic of Messiahs, the man of our moment, Sir Keir. Therefore, despite Alex and Jason's fear about the large Reform vote and their trepidation about Biden's remaining in the US Presidential race, they still make time to ‘Rejoice, Rejoice, Rejoice Greatly' because British democracy does work. It operates via a system of checks and balances -- where every action causes a counter reaction, and every Sunak Rwanda scheme, Truss tanking of the economy, and Boris-y lie elicits a shift in public opinion. Despite the positive news of Britian's Independence from Neo-Populists, the Enduring Disorder still prevails in many corners of these resplendent Isles. Jason tells of his undercover ethnographic field trip to Clacton-on-Sea, where he discovers that Reform are actually just the UK branch of the MAGA movement. Jason and Alex debate if: 1) Britain is in a phase of post-populism or proto-populism; 2) if the wave has crested or if Britain is just at an earlier stage in development than France or the USA; 3) What we can extrapolate about how the British electorate's protest votes over Gaza or immigration bode for the American election; and 4) the power of the anti-system and anti-incumbency pressures and how these two factors might be the big difference btw the British and American elections -- as in the US both anti-system and anti-incumbency tendencies are working for the Republicans and against the Dems, whereas in the July 4 UK election the anti-system vote worked against the Tories and for Reform while the anti-incumbency vote worked for the Tories and against Labour. Jason is so so so excited he just just just can't hide it. He sees the hand of a providential mega orderer at work with the UK going to a general election on July 4th. He doesn't understand why his British friends poopoo his man crush on Starmer, because he sees Sir Keir as truly messianic in his non-messianic-ness and as a better, younger, more competent version of Biden. To get a native-born insider's view on the election, Jason is joined by his Scottish doppelganger (Jane Kinninmont) to discuss what the election could mean for UK foreign policy, post-July 4th Britian's ability to be an orderer on the global stage, and also what this election timing means for developments North of Hadrian's wall. The duo discuss: alternate theories as to why this election timing came about, where the electoral battlelines are being drawn (solidly in the centre ground – especially on foreign policy), if the electoral competition is not focused on wildly different worldviews but on competence, and the potentially disordering role of anti-system players like Corbyn, Galloway, Farage, and Richard Tice. The show ends with Jason putting forward his mystical grand unified theory of how Irish, Italian, Israeli, and British elections effect US elections. You wouldn't want to miss it. The life of a stunt performer is both exhilarating and dangerous, spectacular yet physically and mentally demanding. Stunt performers put their lives on the line every day for our viewing pleasure, yet are seemingly ostracised from the film world, especially in Hollywood where there is still no Academy Award for their service to the industry. Since this podcast was launched in 2016, I have had the pleasure of speaking to many of the leading voices in the stunt world, from stunt doubles and performers to fight trainers who work with huge movie stars to make them look awesome for the big screen, and stunt coordinators whose job it is to keep everybody safe. In this 'best of' episode - one of three compilation shows which have been released simultaneously - my guests include: Jonathan Eusebio, the legendary fight coordinator who helped to create the fighting styles for both Jason Bourne and John Wick, revolutionising Hollywood action cinema in the process; Jwaundace Candece, founder of stuntpoc.com, who is working tirelessly for better representation for stunt performers of colour in the industry; Olivia Jackson, whose life was transformed forever when a stunt went horribly wrong while doubling Milla Jovovich in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter; Rocky Taylor, Britian's oldest stunt performer, still going strong at nearly 80 years old; and Heidi Moneymaker, stunt coordinator and performer best known for doubling Scarlett Johansson as the Marvel superhero, Black Widow. If you enjoyed this 'best of' compilation episode, then remember to check out Best of Directors and Best of Actors, which have also dropped at the same time as this episode. This episode was recorded on the 18th of April, prior to Israel's missile strikes on Iran.Tensions in the Middle East have heightened further after Iran launched a missile attack on Israel last week. This was in response to Israel's strike on the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria - which killed 16 people. Western leaders came to Israel's defence and condemned Iran's attack, but prior to this David Cameron - the UK foreign secretary - had warned that the UK's support for Israel was ‘not unconditional'. So how have these latest developments divided the government's stance on Israel's conflict? And how are Labour planning to act should they come into government amid this war?Anoosh Chakelian, Britian editor at the New Statesman, is joined by Freddie Hayward, political correspondent, and George Eaton, senior editor.Read: The new Tory divide on IsraelSign up to the New Statesman's daily politics email Morning Call Hosted on Acast.
