How do you respond when things don't turn out as you hoped they would? It was lovely to pause for a chat with my friend, Cameron Airen recently. It had been a while since our previous recorded conversation (back in 2018). A lot has changed for all of us since then! Cam is no exception. On this weeks episode of The Gentle Rebel Podcast, we discuss what happens when things don't turn out as hoped. We explore areas of work/business, relationships, and hobbies. How do we not take it personally when our endeavours don't turn out as we hoped? What tells us when it's time to cut our losses and let go? How do we get through it? How do we know where to go next? Cameron and I discussed how we rarely hear people discuss things going wrong, but it's refreshing to do so. It helps us feel less lonely and more connected. I want to amplify those people trying to muddle along, living meaningful lives in ordinary ways. This might also serve as a small antidote to the dehumanising effects of celebrity culture, where we focus on turning people we don't know into gods and monsters for entertainment. Role Models in Real Life I'd like to avoid Survivor Bias as much as possible by sharing incomplete stories that do not have neat endings that wind up at destination "All's Well That Ends Well". So it was strangely satisfying to talk about situations where things have not turned out as hoped, and how disappointing that has been for us at times. I believe we need more role models who are learning to adapt to the ups and downs of everyday life. People who can role with the punches and engage with creative spirit and purpose in the midst of "ordinary unhappiness". We connect with each other on the building sites of loss, in our collective grief, and through shared moments of bittersweet melancholy. From there we can create a more meaningful and sustainable sense of hope for the future. Connect with Cameron's Instagram and website.

In the previous part of Serenity in the Trenches, we identified the signs that tell us we need to recharge our batteries. In this episode we think about the practical side of refuelling the tank. What are your go-to sources of self-care and rest? Retreating This is a word that comes up a lot. Carina Nickerson mentions it, and I've had some lovely discussions with Laurie Helgoe about the importance of it for introverts. At its core, "retreating allows us to move away from the din of outside stimulation and to adopt a more natural and authentic rhythm." Laurie goes on to say that, "for introverts, retreating is more than a movement away. It is a compelling pull toward. In the quiet space of a retreat, we dream, we hear the voice within, we can remember what we love, notice what we have, and envision what we want." This is such a beautiful reminder that 'retreat' isn't simply an escape from all that is bad. It is a movement towards all that is good. And as introverts it is of paramount importance because the din of the world 'out there' can drown out that quietly creative voice within. Laurie points out, "because introverts are so mentally "absorbent," the concerns and wishes of others too easily displace our own. Though we love to make sense of everything in our worlds, doing so becomes taxing. We need to refuel." And this is where rest, self-care, and retreat all come in. Retreat Towards, Not Away From In this part of Serenity in the Trenches we explore the go-to sources of refuelling the tank. Self-care has become a slightly trite phrase used to sell bath salts and chocolate. But this fails to appreciate the more transformational and foundational aspects of its true meaning in our lives. We hear from all 23 contributors about the importance of taking this seriously. And they share their struggles and successes with their own 'retreat towards' practices. Alice Southern, Beth Buelow, Boom Shikha, Cameron Airen, Carina Nickerson, Cat Rose, Jacob Nordby, Jacquelyn Strickland, Jim Woods, Jennifer Kahnweiler, Josie George, Lauren Sapala, Leah Burkhart, Mark Pierce, Michaela Chung, Nancy Ancowitz, Neil Hughes, Sarah Kuhn, Sarah Santacroce, Thea Orozco, Tracy Cooper, Tracy Guillet, Tuula Ahde Healthy Retreat Laurie suggests that "we need both, personal and collective retreats. A solo retreat gets us up close and personal with ourselves, which can expose vulnerabilities as well as desires." This is the bedrock of a life that carries meaning and joy. We've got to go inwards and explore the depths of our biggest dreams, hopes, and fears, so that we can design a life that reflects all of us. This is not a one time event, but happens over time, step by step, moment by moment. Laurie warns against placing all the pressure on a one-off retreat. "Maybe the bed is too hard, or the mosquitos are hungry, or you discover difficult emotions you've neglected. We are better able to mindfully accept such experiences when we have an attitude of discovery. And we foster this attitude when we make retreating a practice -- a renewable resource. So we have the annual or semi-annual or quarterly retreat away, but we also take ourselves on regular "dates" and walks and into favorite hideouts on a regular basis." Regular Retreating The contributors explore how they structure their own regular retreats. There are many similar themes that emerge, but also plenty of differences in what works for each of them. And this is an important thing to remember. We get to craft this for ourselves. It's not a situation where we can paint by numbers. We can't copy what someone else has found useful, believing that it is the magic bullet. Always be skeptical about anyone who positions themselves as a guru or the person with 'THE way' to the secret, answer, solution etc. Life is an experiment. It's our canvas to paint. And we get to be a part of the process of design and crafting.

I just read a passage from The Courage to Be Disliked about value judgements. 'The Philosopher' says that feelings of inferiority arise when we compare ourselves to others. For example,"I'm too short", "I'm not clever", "I'm ugly". This resonates strongly with the content of this week's interview with Cameron Airen. Speak to pretty much anyone, and they will point to fixed traits that make them feel inferior to others. These can quickly become the pull of our attention. Three Responses to Inferiority An excuse (I can never do what I dream of because I'm a Highly Sensitive Person), a futile obsession (I am going to eliminate or at least hide my sensitivity), or a twisted focus (I'm going to prove that it's better to be highly sensitive). These three responses to inferiority are unhealthy, because they continue to build the story around the inferiority feelings. We often fall into this because they're all such natural responses. But if we're going to learn to live and thrive within the truth of who we are at our core, then we need to accept those things. Reject inferiority feelings (this makes me worse than others). Dismiss the pull towards superiority (this makes me better than others). Embrace the middle ground of acceptance (this is how I function). Ask what this makes possible. We often focus on the opposite question: what does this make impossible? You probably ask this question about all sorts of things without even thinking. Cameron Airen I am joined on the podcast by Cameron Airen, who is a feminist mindset coach, gender consultant, writer and podcaster. She helps people frame their high sensitivity as a superpower. This is the key to unlocking their consciousness to create the kind of change they want to see in their lives and the world. She focusses on the stories we have been told and have come to believe about who we are supposed to be. Cameron helps people see the specific messages that have influenced them as an individual, so that they can find their own true voice beneath and actively choose how to show up in the world. In the interview we discuss: Competition and the Highly Sensitive Person Cameron was a fitness coach and long distance running coach. She knows what it takes to succeed in the field of endurance sport. We talk about how HSPs often carry an intrinsic drive to push themselves and succeed at chosen pursuits. And how this can be destroyed by society's obsession with interpersonal competition and win-at-all-costs mentality. Gender Stereotypes There are subtle messages everywhere we look, which point us towards particular gender frames. We filter all manner of things, which are completely unrelated, through a lens of gender: the toys we play with as children, the clothes we wear, the appropriateness of our ambitions, or the relationship we have with our emotions. Things to which there is no correlation other than the social constructs we have built up. We talk about how these constructs are damaging our health, both as a society, and for individuals within our communities. Gentle Rebellion Cameron definitely fits the Gentle Rebel mould (in that she doesn't fit a mould!) We talk about how she grew in confidence to stay true to her natural sensitivity, while at the same time standing up for what she believes in. The surprising truth is that this was about becoming more of her highly sensitive self, not less. She believes that when we give ourselves permission to allow the sensitivity to flourish, we become more resilient and resistant to the prevailing messages that we need to rail against.   Support the Podcast and get bonus extras:

If someone wishes to explore their own spirituality and divinity there shouldn't be anything stand in their way of doing that right?  Right.  Except that so many of us are internalising messages of oppression every day from institutions such as the patriarchy, white supremacy and capitalism, that we may fail to see how they are truly impacting us; especially minority people who are bombarded with messages that things such as their sexuality, body, race, culture and so many other things are unacceptable.  All of these things deeply impact any person's sense of self and desire to see themselves as a Divine and whole human being as feminist consultant Cameron Airen explains to us in this episode.

The eighth of a ten part series looking at the aftermath of the Pulse shooting in Orlando, solely through the voices of members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Following the shooting, I began seeing members of the community openly worrying on social media, understandably for their lives, but also about the packaging of the attack both by major news outlets and elected officials. It seemed like coverage of the shooting was overwhelmingly formatted as cisgender, heterosexual people talking about members of the queer and Latinx community rather than talking to them. After frustrating hours of fruitlessly searching for perspective from the actual communities affected, I remembered that, in this modern world, I didn’t have to wait for any other outlet to have these conversations for me; I could do it myself. As I started thinking about the project, something else became painfully obvious to me: I couldn’t wrap my head around the weight of 49 lives lost. I heard about a news anchor reading all 49 names on air, and was surprised to hear that this simple act took seven minutes. That number, 49, by itself, can feel small. 49 cents, 49 seconds. I wanted to understand the enormity, the massive loss of life, by talking to 49 people who identify within the LGBTQIA+ community, to understand that weight.
