Summary: Whether you're young or just young at heart, the explosion of Young Adult novels in the last decade has made an impact on the publishing industry and readers alike. Today, Holly and Devin review YA stories from their wheelhouses, showing us the breadth and depth of YA stories - they can get intense, both romantically and horrifically. Topics Discussed: The Heart (6:23): Devin discussed I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuinston, a YA romance following Chloe Green after her rival and prom queen Shara Wheeler kisses her and then disappears from their small Alabama community. Chloe teams up with Rory Heron and Smith Parker, who Shara also kissed, to find her. Along the way, they also realize they're finding themselves. Devin's key takeaways were: The characters embark on a journey of self-exploration, grappling with their sexuality, ambitions, and the expectations imposed by their conservative community. McQuinston highlights the complexities of discovering and embracing one's true self, especially in a setting that demands conformity. The story explores the tension between individuality and societal pressures, especially within the confines of a rigidly conservative environment. Shara's mysterious game becomes a form of rebellion, challenging the rules and norms of their community while encouraging others to question them too. Through the unlikely alliances and shared experiences of Chloe, Rory, and Smith, the book examines the power of understanding and empathy. It underscores the importance of building authentic connections, healing fractured relationships, and finding common ground with others—even those you least expect. The Dagger (16:22): Holly discussed The Grace Year by Kim Liggett, a YA dystopian horror set in the fictional Garner County, in which a patriarchal society teaches girls they have the power to lure grown men from their beds and drive women mad with jealousy. As a result, each girl is banished from the community when they turn sixteen - they must release their magic into the wild so they can return purified and ready for marriage. Tierney James dreams of a better life, but as her own grace year draws near, she realizes that she has a lot more to fear than the brutal elements outside Garner County. Holly's key takeaways were: This story was particularly well suited for a young adult audience even though it clearly can resonate with anyone of any age. Liggett takes things that teens are dealing with, especially expectations and limitations on girls and women throughout history to today, and shows them in a new light by dialing them up to this extreme, dystopian level. The Grace Year critiques societal systems that oppress women through fear, control, and systemic violence. The story explores how women are pitted against each other under patriarchal systems and how solidarity can emerge even in dire circumstances. The concept of "magic" is used metaphorically to explore how fear and myths are wielded as tools to control and subjugate populations. Tierney's struggle to survive physically and emotionally highlights themes of resilience and self-reliance inside of the restrictive bounds of that “magic.” Hot On the Shelf (31:52): Devin: Single Player by Tara Tai Holly: Water Moon by Samantha Sotto Yambao What's Making Our Hearts Race (36:21): Devin: Athletic Brewing NA Beer Holly: Conclave Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Welcome to Over the Rainbow, the podcast: a safe space and voice for all queer identities. Episode 31: Queer comedy with Chloe Green (she/her): In this episode, Chloe and I talk about LGBTQ+ representation in comedy. We explore how diverse the comedy scene actually is, how queer people were traditionally the butt of jokes, and how we need to continue to push for fair and proper representation of all queer people and other marginalised communities. Queer comedy is an important part of our culture and challenging the lack of representation of queer people in comedy and wider society is a job for all of us. It's August! It's raining! And I'm back at the world's biggest arts festival for another year - so it's time for an Edinburgh Fringe special! This episode I'm joined by three founding members of comedy collective The LOL Word - a group of queer women and non-binary comedians who are absolutely dominating the Edinburgh Fringe and beyond. We talk getting your first period during a school prank, the waves of anxiety that can come with menstruation, and a lot about period sex. A LOT. You'll be able to tell from the first second that I forgot to bring my audio equipment to Edinburgh. I'm so, so sorry, and I've done everything I can to make it a passable listen. The content is worth it, I absolutely promise. And I'm indebted to the wonderful Matt Hutchinson who made anything vaguely possible. First Blood is a podcast about periods and puberty, hosted by Ella Woods. Get in touch at FirstBloodPodcastUK@gmail.com, and follow us on @FirstBloodPodcastUK on Instagram, @FirstBloodPodUK on Twitter. Follow @LOLwordcomedy, @_ChloeGreen_, @ChloePetts and @JodieMitchell_ to find out where to catch The LOL Word near you. And, if you're around, Chloe Green and I would love to see you at our show 'VENN' - 11pm at the Gilded Balloon until 13th August.

Plus we are celebrating having an awesome guest in the studio - the fantastic Ana Winner joined us (she's learning about podcasting but you know her as @joebidenho420 on TikTok). Do you remember the "Hot Felon", Jeremy Weeks? Well, he's in hot water with his babe, Chloe Green, so you know we are covering that. We're talking about Rhianna - the richest pop star on the planet- and Leonardo DiCaprio's intimacy issues. Finally, we're giving you all we've got on first date conversation starters!
How do wee met the people we love? Comedians share stories that led to love, friendships, happy endings. Or not. Sometimes it doesn’t work out. But heartbreak is best when shared with others, isn’t it. In this episode I talk to comedian Chloe Green about falling in love, falling in love in the workplace, and what that means if your workplace is the Labour Party, and you're queer. It’s the political one. Samantha’s chatting to the Deputy Leader of the Green Party, Amelia Womack, who was the youngest elected deputy leader in any UK political party when she was elected aged 29. They’re joined in the studio by Chloe Green, a political comedian who also works in politics and runs a monthly comedy night for the brightest queer comedians.Top quotes:Chloe: “I was a trending topic by accident. These days I’d kill to trend”Amelia: “I see young people at the centre of demonstrations and activism and the ballot box is just one part of that"Amelia talks about her route from rocks to rocking the commons, shares a 'lovely' story about whips, and tells us why she picked Amelia Earhart as her historical woman of note.Chloe tells us how a random interaction with David Cameron threw her into politics. She also tells us about some of the most unimaginative sexist heckles she’s heard, and why she’s providing a platform for under-represented comedy talent in London. She picks Henrietta Lacks, an African-American woman whose cells were immortalised for some of the most important research in medical history. But they were taken without her consent.Follow our guests:Chloe Green is a comedian based in London@lolwordcomedy has just appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe@_chloe_green_ on TwitterAmelia Womack is deputy leader of the Green PartyTwitter @Amelia_WomackInstagram @greenameliawomack www.ameliawomack.co.uk@periodspodcast See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Our first Tuesday episode (feels good!) and our 200th episode (feels really good!) on the same day? There must be something in the air...Maybe it's the spirit of ghost-Diana congratulating us as she prepares for Meghan's big day? (We'll have to see if the Psychic Twins can get us in touch.) Or maybe it's Leonardo DiCaprio's very first girlfriend who can speak! Her name's Camila Morrone and you won't BELIEVE who her "stepfather" is. Or maybe you will. Plus, Iain Lee fell in a well, Hot Felon and Chloe Green are PREGNANT and Kristin Kreuk definitely left that sex slave cult before they did anything totally bad. Ahh! Mandy Moore is waiting for us at the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, so we gotta run! Thanks for listening!
