Welcome back to another Friday episode of Retail Reflections! This week, we're diving into five hot topics that are shaping the retail landscape right now.We kick off with the much-anticipated return of Topshop. After months of build-up, the relaunch has finally landed but does it live up to the nostalgia? We share our honest thoughts on the collection's design choices, its approach to sustainability, and whether the brand has truly captured the iconic spirit that made it a household name.Next up, we look at JoJo Maman Bébé's new pre-loved platform in partnership with The Little Loop. This initiative lets customers trade in outgrown children's clothes for instant credit. We unpack why circular fashion is gaining momentum, and why this collaboration feels like a real win for eco-conscious families. Then, it's onto Boots, who have just launched their first fragrance-only boutique in London. We discuss what this move means for their place on the high street, how it stacks up against specialist beauty retailers, and the emotional pull of fragrance as a category. We also explore M&S's £340 million investment into its food supply chain the largest in the retailer's history as they look to double their food business. From product innovation to plans for airport stores, we debate whether M&S is setting itself apart enough to challenge Waitrose and stay ahead in an increasingly competitive space. Finally, we close with Amazon, which is facing legal action over alleged price inflation and tough vendor agreements. We consider what this means for sellers and consumers. As always, we'd love to hear your thoughts on the topics we cover so keep the feedback coming! And don't forget to tune in next week for more insights and reflections from the ever-changing world of retail. This week's top takeaways:Nostalgia isn't enough for a successful brand relaunch innovation and authenticity are key.Sustainability is no longer optional, with kidswear brands leading the way in circular fashion.High street icons like Boots and M&S are reinventing themselves to stay relevant in a fast-moving market.Support the showIf you've liked this episode please rate, follow, subscribe and share :) - and if you already have, thank you!Follow us @buyingandbeyond on Instagram Send us a DM or email hello@buyingandbeyond.co.uk Find out more about us www.buyingandbeyond.co.uk If you'd like to show a little more love, then head here to give us just a little bit *extra* and show us your support :) thank you! https://www.buzzsprout.com/2300060/support

Eighty years ago today, Japan unconditionally surrendered, following the US atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The war in Asia and Pacific ended, and World War Two was finally over. Tens of thousands of British, and hundreds of thousands of soldiers from across Britain's empire had fought Japan. Thousands were taken as prisoners of war and held in appalling conditions. British civilians were also captured and interned. We learn about Shelagh Brown who was held captive for three and a half years, after fleeing her home in Singapore, then a British colony, when the Japanese invaded. The Women's Rugby World Cup, being held in England, starts a week today. In this episode, we speak with Anna Youngston, founder of Majury Merchandising and former merchandising professional at Accessorize, about her transition from a long-standing career in retail to establishing her own consultancy. With over 20 years of experience in merchandising across major British fashion retailers, Anna provides valuable insights for professionals in fashion, retail, and business strategy. Her career spans well-known retailers such as Harvey Nichols, Principles, Accessorize, Warehouse, and Topshop. She now works with small businesses, helping them strengthen their commercial performance through data-driven merchandising strategies. This episode offers practical guidance for retail buyers, founders, and operators navigating a highly competitive and fast-changing market. One of the key misconceptions Anna addresses is the belief that merchandising is only relevant for large businesses. In reality, it is often the missing component in smaller brands seeking sustainable growth. She explains how better stock visibility, range planning, and forecasting can significantly improve performance. Her consultancy work highlights how many small brands fail to unlock the full value of their data. Whether addressing pre-orders, managing cash flow, or responding to evolving customer behaviour, effective merchandising is not optional - it is essential. Anna also discusses the importance of reactive agility. Successful merchandising is not only about long-term planning, but also about adapting quickly to challenges. From excess stock to supply chain delays, the ability to make timely, informed decisions can significantly impact cash flow and profitability. She emphasises the importance of understanding financial performance at a granular level. Whether discussing pre-order models, seasonal range architecture, or margin contribution, she underlines the value of knowing precisely where growth is coming from. Anna believes there is a need for objective, data-led decision-making. Emotional attachment to products or legacy ideas often results in poor commercial outcomes. The ability to pivot with intention and strategic clarity is a critical skill for modern retail businesses.Takeaways from the Episode:Merchandising isn't just for big brands - it's a game-changer for small businesses. Don't be afraid to pivot, and don't just rely on hope - it's not a good sales strategy! Know your numbers: You have to make sure you understand your forecasting, lessons learned, and your building blocksWhether you're a brand founder, a solo entrepreneur, or a retail team member trying to get a grip on your stock and strategy, Anna's wisdom offers practical tools to build resilience, make smart decisions, and grow with confidence.Connect with Anna Youngston or follow Majury Merchandising on Linkedin, or check out https://www.majurymerchandising.com/Thanks for tuning in! Welcome to another episode of Buying and Beyond! In this episode it's just us! We're taking a small break from our guest spots, as we dive into the world of Comp Shops, discussing why they're essential for staying inspired, spotting trends, and growing creatively in retail - not for copying! We break the myth; trendspotting is about inspiration and evolution, not duplication. Our recent comp shop took us to the streets of London, walking down Oxford street to see the latest IKEA takeover of the former Topshop space, which felt rather eerie and strange, however the recent news of the standalone stores for the impending Topshop re-brand was a real pick me up! We talk trends, like the buttermilk yellow and boutique branding in mainstream chains, and highlight some of our standout stores, such as the fairly newish roll out of Sostrene Grene and the rise of M&S's sell out collections. We also dig into retail news, the shift toward experience-led shopping, and how tech (and even hackers!) are reshaping the industry. With TALAS's CEO declaring “we're in the hospitality business” we unpack the new expectations for high street retail, it's more important than ever for bricks and mortar to provide a customer experience, as transactional shopping is the online offer. What is the reason a customer is coming to your store? It needs to be emotive, tangible, show quality and interaction. We are forever more reliant on technology, which has so many positive outcomes, but it also put us at risk of a more robotic future, and less human sociable interaction. On which note, a huge thanks to everyone who attended our first networking event! We share how it went, what we learned, and why community is at the heart of everything we're building - plus, what's next as we expand this exciting space for industry connection!
Luxury retail is no longer confined to storefronts and seasonal campaigns. Brands are bringing hospitality to retail, building deeper emotional connections, and extending their presence beyond the product. Coach, among other heritage labels, is experimenting with cafés, branded bars, and immersive spaces that offer more than a transaction—they offer belonging. According to MG2 Advisory, 1 in 5 consumers say immersive, sensorial store experiences are a top reason they return to luxury stores, and nearly 1 in 4 cite creative offerings and high-touch services as key motivators for repeat visits. These findings reinforce the growing demand for experiences that feel distinct, emotionally engaging, and memorable. So, how can retail brands design experiences that go beyond shopping and spark genuine loyalty and community? In this episode of Retail Refined, host Melissa Gonzalez speaks with Giovanni Zaccariello, SVP of Global Visual Experience at Coach. Together, they unpack how Coach is transforming retail environments into community-centered spaces, blending Gen Z values with design innovation and consumer insights. From cafés to digital universes, Coach is testing bold ideas to turn brick-and-mortar into something far more memorable. This approach is a leading example of bringing hospitality to retail in a way that is both localized and globally resonant.Key highlights from the episode:Coach is integrating cafés, bars, and mobile coffee trucks into retail locations to increase dwell time and emotional connection. Each experience is hyper-localized—menus and design reflect the culture of each location, from Tokyo to Singapore.Coach sees hospitality as a strategic way to engage Gen Z and Gen Alpha, blending community, culture, and self-expression.Giovanni Zaccariello is a seasoned visual merchandising and experiential design leader with over two decades of global experience across top fashion and lifestyle brands. As SVP of Global Visual Experience at Coach, he has driven innovation through immersive retail concepts, hospitality integration, and digital engagement strategies, with prior leadership roles in Asia and North America. His career spans brands like Mexx, Marks & Spencer, Topshop, Esprit, and Uniqlo, showcasing expertise in global visual strategy, consumer-centric design, and cross-cultural brand storytelling.
Today we're joined by Shani - Shani has worked for Arcadia, Tesco, Tie Rack and Superdry - all large Uk retailers but with very different buying offices and Shani is here to tell us all about it. It's a really raw and honest talk about how retail used to be and the stereotypical situations you would hear about in Buying offices.Katy and Shani met at university studying the same Fashion Retail Buying course (20 years ago!) and lived together at their first jobs in London. We dive into the stories of the struggles, dramas and hilarious moments as they entered the world of buying. We talk about why Shani decided to study at De Montfort and her inspiring lectures Helen Dunn and Pippa Clarkson- what a difference it makes when your taught by someone who has come from industry!Shani talks us through her career history as she climbed the ladder from a visual merch role at Topshop right through to a Senior Buyer level at Superdry. We talk about how grateful she was to get that first opportunity at Burton (thanks Jane!) after taking a risk to move to London without a job! Shani's story is a real rollercoaster ride of different retailers departments and demands, as we hear all about the different buying structures she has worked within, how to manage up & down when you land that first promotion, and how to navigate working for a company that does not have any processes! We hear all about why Shani loved her time in buying from the travelling, the buzz of being able to make some big decision that will make a difference, but most of all the incredible people you meet along the way. They are your tribe, we are all similar in our thinking and determination to succeed with passion and excitement for what we do. Our key takeaways are: Take a risk if it feels comfortable it's not going to challenge you or change your journey! The right balance of Buying AND Merchandising skills is so important for a businesses survivalIts can be a very uncertain environment as you could be moved around departments at a moments notice, just remember though it's great to challenge yourself with a new category and take it as a compliment your obviously doing something right! Oh and ALWAYS have biscuits - sign offs, supplier meetings, or toddler tantrums! If your a buyer listening to this and would love to join us for a chat on the podcast, get in touch- we would love to have you on to share your experience with others to inspire and inform anyone looking to join the wild world of retail buying. Not every tire shop can claim that they attract “raving fans,” but at Best-One of Indy, it's actually what they're known for. It's literally part of the company's mission statement – and honestly, the team just does a great job at it. You have to give this team credit: It's not easy making a “raving fan” out of someone who just found out they're going to need to drop a few hundred dollars on tires. That's a big part of why Best-One of Indy has been named Tire Review's 2024 Top Shop. But, if you stop digging into the shop's strengths there, you're doing yourself a big disservice. To understand the inner workings of what makes this business tick – from attracting customers to hiring skilled technicians who want to stay on board for the long term, and how the business stays at the front of drivers' minds in the Indy area, I sat down with the leadership team here at Best-One to pick their brains.Watch the video above to see us surprise the Best-One of Indy team with news that they have been named Tire Review's 2024 Top Shop Winner. Hello Wonderful Readers,I felt a lot of resistance writing this piece. I'm very tired right now. Most of you reading this are not in high school, and any of my younger cousins or friends who might be are probably just scrolling on TikTok. You can see how my inner critic is already working against me! That's why it's important to me to challenge myself. I'm determined to write and publish this piece for you anyway.I'm stealing the idea of this list from Austin Kleon, who stole it from Debbie Millman. I listened to his story about it on Millman's podcast this week. Here, I've cobbled together the first six things I wish I had known when I was graduating from high school. That year was 2013, and a lot has changed since then. Instagram existed at the time, but it wasn't widely used. This was years before TikTok, when the first major sex scandal about Jimmy Savile came out, and Oscar Pistorius, the South African sprinter, had just murdered his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.I was finishing up my A-Levels at my incredibly fancy and academically rigorous “secondary school,” Westminster School in London. I had gotten rejected from all the top universities I applied to and was on my way to taking a gap year. I had no idea what I was doing with my life (spoiler, I still have no idea what I am doing now). So, without further ado, this is what I wish I had known at that time.1. The mean girls don't matter in this cruel world

Joining Jill and Doron on our 28th episode, the tenth of our second season, to tell us her story is British entrepreneur and Israel warrior Emily Cohen. Emily completed her A-Levels at Surbiton High School in Surrey, and thereafter - rather than go to university - chose to start working, in public relations. She began at the Lynne Franks agency in London, advising mainly showbiz and other celebrity clients. She then ran Hilton Hotels' London press office, from where she moved to head European PR for the Planet Hollywood restaurants chain. Next, Emily founded Pout Cosmetics, which Victoria's Secret acquired eight years later. She then consulted for fellow Carmel alumnus Sir Philip Green, and created a Top Shop cosmetics brand. 17 years ago, she co-founded and acted as creative director of the kids' fashion label Sunuva. Since October 7, she has come back full circle to her PR roots in support of Israel, focusing on people rather than politics. She and her husband Roy, an Israeli-American, have been married for twenty years, with two children. They live in Queens Park, and have a second home in Tel Aviv. Hear Emily talk about her highly irregular Carmel induction, ‘mansara' living, impersonating MeatLoaf on Purim, her suspension for being the beacon of tuck, ‘Earth, Wind & Fire' 4ever, a very cheeky birthday card, showing Arnold around Tel Aviv, Kylie Minogue's pouty red lip gloss, fielding an unexpected call from Sir Philip Green, and life as an Israel warrior. Thank you, Emily Cohen, for turning us again to Carmel days! Can You Actually Have It All In A Stepfamily? Today I'm sharing an interview I did for this year's Stepmom Summit because it's the kind of story that we don't get to hear enough of as stepmoms: a stepmom and mom who not only get along, but are real-life friends, work together, and have made co-parenting virtually seamless for their kids. I'm talking with Emmy Award-winning journalist Catt Sadler and Digital Dept. CEO Sarah Boyd. These women are each superstars professionally, and both vowed to put the kids in the stepfamily first. It's a wonderful story of how the dynamics can come together in a loving and positive way. About Catt: Catt Sadler is a three time-Emmy winning journalist, renowned for her work on E! Entertainment, where she spent more than a decade contributing to E! News, E! News Weekend, Daily Pop, Live From E! and hosting various network specials. She's also been a fixture on the red carpet covering high-caliber events and interviewing celebrities during awards season. She has been co-host of the Vanity Fair Oscars Party show for the last several years. Today, she is the host and EP of her weekly podcast: CATT SADLER Now. Catt has appeared on The View, The Talk, The Tamron Hall Show, and many other programs. After choosing to leave E! over a wage gap issue and receiving an outpouring of support, Catt became a prominent voice for the equal pay movement. She has spent much of her time contributing to the cause by taking part in the LA Women's March, speaking at the Equal Pay Day rally at City Hall in New York, and starring in LUNA Bar's Equal Pay Day campaign. Catt was also selected for the NYDJ Denim campaign highlighting women leading change. She starred in the SECRET deodorant “I'd Rather Get Paid” initiative and MM.Le.Fleur's “What Are You Made Of?” fashion campaign. In 2021 she was featured with a diverse group of women in Summersalt's swimwear campaign celebrating an eclectic group of confident and successful women who love their bodies – in all forms, at any age. Championing women has always been her passion. About Sarah: Sarah Boyd is the co-CEO of The Digital Dept., which represents the most sought-after celebrity influencers. Her current/past clients roster includes Alessandra Ambrosio, Jamie Chung, Olivia Culpo, Julianne Hough, Lauren Bushnell Lane, Jana Kramer, and many more who look to Sarah to help them capitalize on their influential status in the entertainment industry to make their mark in the influencer world. Sarah started her career in Fashion PR and in 2012, she decided to channel her expert industry know-how, her extensive list of contacts, and relationships into starting her own business, SIMPLY, a collective with one goal in mind: connecting. The SIMPLY ‘Do What You Love' event is an annual Fashion and Beauty Conference in cities such as LA, NY, Chicago, and Dubai. Since 2012, SIMPLY has hosted tens of thousands of attendees. Sarah has secured partnerships with prestigious brands like CITI, Topshop, Barney's NY and many more. She's been featured in Marie Claire, People Style Watch, Fox News, E!, LA Business Journal, to name a few. She was named a “Female Founder to Watch” by Forbes and is now a Forbes Fashion and Beauty contributor. In 2017, Sarah completed a successful acquisition for SIMPLY with Socialyte (under the NYLON LLC parent company) and Sarah held the position of President of Socialyte. In 2018, Sarah co-founded the Moms + Babes Box with partner Jana Kramer which is a quarterly subscription box filled with 6+ full sized products for moms and their babes. In 2020, Sarah and Jana sold the business. In 2022, Socialyte was acquired by Dolphin Entertainment, and in 2023, Socialyte and Be Social merged to become The Digital Dept. where Sarah was installed as co-CEO.
