Hello and welcome to Women Taking the Lead. I'm going to start us off by reading a quote I read not too long ago of my guest today. “As leaders in an increasingly polarized society, it's crucial that we recognize the talent within our organizations. Incredible talents are often overlooked, underutilized, or placed in situations that are bound to fail. The consequence of this is stagnant teams and underperforming businesses because our people feel disconnected. However, it's not the people who are broken; it's our organizational systems that require fixing.” That is a bold statement made by Dr. Mary-Clare Race, the President of Talking Talent. Meet Mary-Clare Race Dr. Mary-Clare Race is recognized for her remarkable career spanning four continents. She has played a pivotal role in facilitating business improvement for globally renowned organizations, including Barclays, Goldman Sachs, GSK, Unilever, Coca-Cola, and Estee Lauder Companies, as well as governmental organizations including the British Government, Cabinet Office, and the UK National Health Service. A prominent figure in her field, Dr. Race's research contributions have been published in reputable journals such as Frontiers in Psychology, Mental Illness at Work, and People & Strategy. In this episode Mary-Clare and I discussed: The history DEI and the current state of DEI efforts around the globe. The importance of considering the ecosystem vs. the individual when looking to retain talent Where companies can make investments in the coming year to see meaningful progress. How the most effective programs will both customize to the organization and personalize to the individual. Amanda Baldwin never considered herself an entrepreneur because she's technically not a founder. But her mindset shifted when she won Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2022. Amanda earned this distinction as a first-time CEO of Supergoop! the first protective skincare brand that puts SPF at the forefront because she has been breaking boundaries and innovating in her role from day one. Supergoop!'s mission is to change how the world thinks about sunscreen through its clean, feel-good, highly innovative formulas that are fun and easy to use daily. She has taken the brand to places no other sunscreen category has gone before. Amanda was also recently named one of the top 25 Women in Consumer HealthTech and a Woman of Influence by the New York Business Journal. Amanda is a veteran of the beauty and finance industries, but this role as CEO is her first. Under her leadership for the past seven years, the company has grown well over 20x, become highly profitable, and secured a majority investment from Blackstone Growth, Blackstone's platform backing the next generation of category-creating brands. Beginner's luck? No way. Her educational and experience pedigree has shaped who she is today. She oversees the entirety of the organization, setting its strategy for growth, building a world-class team, and leading the company's marketing, sales, product development, operations, and finance divisions. Before joining Supergoop! Amanda was a member of the operating team at L Catterton with a particular focus on the beauty sector. Prior to L Catterton, she led the omnichannel marketing strategy of Dior Beauty at LVMH, Inc. and held several positions at Clinique, a part of The Estee Lauder Companies. Her career began in finance as a private equity investor at Apax Partners and an investment banking analyst at Goldman Sachs. In this episode, Amanda spills the secrets to her success, and spoiler alert: it involves putting in the hard work. We discuss what it means to innovate in a category, her views on marketing and partnerships, and why one of the biggest challenges of entrepreneurship is that you can see the big, big, big, big picture, but that doesn't mean you can do all of it right away. We dive deep into what she attributes to her success in gaining management's trust to test, learn, and iterate. She shares how she thinks about leadership, the matchmaking process of hiring, and why it's not just about knowing how to do the job but LOVING to do the job and how candidates can stand out from the pack. In this week's episode, we're covering Nikki Phillippi and her husband Dan's history of problematic behaviour on YouTube over the years. Last week, the couple faced severe backlash when they revealed to Nikki’s 1.3 million subscribers that they chose to euthanize their 9-year-old dog, Bowser, after he got aggressive with their son despite refusing to train him. The copywriting space is booming, but with so many writers from a ton of different industries moving into it, it's more important than ever before to set ourselves apart. Creating a personality for our brand is a great way to do that, but how can we make sure it still feels authentic to who we are? Assuming a character helps keep us top of mind for our clients, but it's only effective when it fits in with our existing personalities. Is there a way to strike a balance between the two? What can we do to ensure our work is a true reflection of us, our personalities, and our quirks? In this episode, Co-Founder of The Copywriter Club and self-proclaimed Copy Chef, Kira Hug shares how to build a business by being unique. Three Things You’ll Learn in This Episode How to take the plunge into the copywriting pool: Copywriters get a lot of work opportunities from other copywriters, so get in the same room as them and start building genuine relationships. The great thing is, it’s easier than ever before to get into those rooms because so many have moved online. What makes copywriting essential in any business: Without the right words to express our brands and what we stand for, no one will hear our voices. Great copywriting makes it easier to stand out in a sea of competitors. Why business owners should have a working knowledge of copywriting: It’s easier to give direction or edit when necessary when we have a general understanding of the processes that go into copywriting. Knowing the basics is a valuable skill for any business owner to have, so take the time to learn more about it. Guest Bio- Kira Hug is a conversion copywriter who specializes in personality-driven launch copy. She also helps business owners package their ‘weird’ and figure out their brand strategy following her signature Weird Trifecta Framework™. In a previous life, Kira was an art major (yep) and ended up working with global brands like Estee Lauder Companies. She also led the marketing team for startups like ActionableBooks.com and global health nonprofits (what up, glaucoma and breastfeeding). Today, Kira refers to herself as a Copy Chef (she dresses the part!), and she leads a team of multiple copywriters in a flex micro-agency focused on personality-driven sales copy for course, membership, and product launches. All links and images for this episode can be found on CISO Series (https://cisoseries.com/why-do-we-fire-the-ciso-tradition/) Yes, firing the CISO probably won't solve our security issues. But our community has a multi-generational heritage of relying on scapegoats to make them feel good about their decisions. This episode is hosted by me, David Spark (@dspark), producer of CISO Series and Mike Johnson. Our guest this week is Kirsten Davies (@kirstendiva), CISO, Estee Lauder Companies. Thanks to our podcast sponsor, Kenna Security With Kenna Security, companies efficiently manage the right level of risk for their business. Our Modern Vulnerability Management model eliminates the friction between Security and IT teams about what to patch, providing clear prioritization based on real-time threat intelligence and guidance applied to each customer’s unique environment across infrastructure, applications and IoT. Why is everybody talking about this now? On the AskNetSec subreddit one redditor asked, "Why do people always get fired over a breach?" to which one responded, like many others, "it’s just tradition. Military, government, corporations. It’s an old-fashioned thing really, but a lot of people still believe a 'blood sacrifice' is required to restore faith from the public or the shareholders." How tenable is it to keep doing this with so many breaches? After a breach what are the different actions needed to appease shareholders, executives, employees, and customers? And when is blood letting warranted? How to become a CISO Over on the CISOseries subreddit, a hopefully soon-to-be-CISO asked, "What should I ask before being a CISO at a startup?" This startup is pre-IPO. 2000 employees. About $1B in valuation. The redditor is looking for advice beyond asking what's the current security strategy and what the reporting structure would look like. What would you want to ask in such a situation? "What's Worse?!" Probably the ultimate "What's Worse?!" scenario. Hey you’re a CISO. What’s your take? On LinkedIn, Kris Rides asked, "If you can only do one thing to retain your staff what would that be?" What have you done and has any of your staff let you know that certain actions you took meant a lot to them. According to research from leadership consulting firm DDI, 57 percent of employees who walk out the door, do so because they can't stand their boss. For that reason, the pressure is heavily on the CISO to make sure they're well-liked by their staff. There’s got to be a better way to handle this Can you think of a moment you had to make a significant shift in your security program? What did you do and why? Was there a specific event that triggered it?

“No one knows where the work is going to take them. Doing work in the first place is such a vulnerable thing. Putting it out there, you’re already in the unknown.” —Maria Baez In this episode, I sit with Maria Baez, a principal photographer at jet.com. Maria is a friend, and we got to know each other at Estee Lauder Companies, where she set up a fantastic in-house media studio. She is a talented content creator and thought partner who is five years into her commercial photography career. We usually talk with business owners and creative people who are further along in their careers, so this is a great time to bring in a fresh perspective. In this episode, we see the business through the eyes of someone who is also seeing it anew, charting a new path, and developing their voice. This conversation is about a family history of immigration, learning a new language, and making a whole new life. The work ethic and tenacity Maria brings on set and as a thought partner at a brand is a testament to her heritage. And it's incredible to see it play out. Nancy Mahon, SVP of global philanthropy and corporate citizenship for The Estee Lauder Companies and global executive director for the MAC AIDS Fund, has some counsel for social entrepreneurs and other business leaders interested in impact. It begins with context. We are in “the golden age of purpose.” “We are seeing an acceleration of a trend that has been in motion for some time where consumers are voting with their dollars and they are saying yes we care that you care. We share your values and we want not only a good financial model, but great products and a place to work and a great stock to invest in, we want a sustainable business. You have to make the world a better place,” Mahon says. MAC Cosmetics, an Estée Lauder brand, has been selling Viva Glam lipstick for more than 20 years and giving every penny of the retail revenue to the MAC AIDS Fund to fight AIDS. At the end of 2017, the lifetime total raised reached $480 million with $25 million raised in 2017. Read the full Forbes article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/2Cfbnjd.
