Jesse Vang had a felony conviction for harming a child when he was seventeen. He'd been charged with human trafficking. He'd done federal time for a drug conspiracy. And when he was released in 2022, he was placed on supervised release through 2025. By February 2024, Katrina Baur was dropping off her three-year-old son at Vang's apartment in Two Rivers, Wisconsin for what she described as “disciplinary reasons.” The question that hangs over this case: did anyone around Jesse Vang know what his record looked like before Elijah Vue disappeared?The criminal complaint paints a picture of coordinated cruelty between Baur and Vang. Text messages show two people discussing how to make a toddler “fear” them. A deleted photograph recovered from Baur's phone shows Elijah blindfolded and bruised at 3:13 in the morning. Standing punishments lasting hours. Cold water. One diaper change a day. Vang called it “boot camp.” Baur called it teaching her son “how to be a man.” Elijah was three years old, still in diapers, still bottle-fed.And the history between these two adults goes deeper than anyone initially realized. When investigators interviewed Katrina Baur about the adults in her son's life, she used a word that stopped them: “structure.” She described Elijah's biological father, Jimmy Vue, as “the alpha” over Jesse Vang. Jimmy Vue was incarcerated at the time. Vang was the man Baur placed her three-year-old with — a convicted felon still on federal supervised release. And Baur had once told police that Vang had trafficked her.The dynamic between these adults is central to understanding how Elijah Vue ended up where he did. In a Two Rivers apartment, subjected to what the criminal complaint describes as standing punishments lasting hours, cold water, forced prayer, and isolation. Vang texted Baur that he would make the boy hate him. She replied: “Don't want him to *hate* YOU. Just fear you.” A photograph recovered from Baur's phone showed Elijah blindfolded with bruises on his face and neck at 3:13 in the morning. The DuPage County State's Attorney's office says Hence was denied pretrial release and is charged with several crimes including Possession of a Weapon by a Felon, and two counts of Misdemeanor DUI. His next court date is June 29th.

He was still on supervised release when Katrina Baur drove her son Elijah Vue two and a half hours across Wisconsin and left him in Vang's apartment for what she called “disciplinary reasons.” She told investigators she wanted Vang to teach Elijah “how to be a man.” The child was three years old.According to the criminal complaint, Vang described the arrangement as “boot camp.” He forced Elijah to stand for up to three hours at a time as punishment. He subjected the boy to cold water. He took away the child's only toy. He changed his diaper once a day. Their text messages show two adults coordinating what was happening to this child — and Baur's deleted photograph, recovered by investigators, showed Elijah blindfolded with bruising on his face and neck at 3:13 in the morning. She erased it within the hour. Eight days after Baur dropped Elijah off, Vang reported him missing. He told police the boy walked away while he slept. Within one minute, Baur messaged Vang telling him what to say. She deleted that message too. Investigators found it anyway.The community searched for seven months. Elijah's remains were found in a wooded area three miles from the apartment — discovered by a hunter on private property. Doctors found healed fractures on his skull and face. His death was ruled a homicide. Vang now faces life in prison. Baur faces up to sixty years. Both have pleaded not guilty. While 92% of black women voted for Kamala Harris, statistics show a different story for other demographics, leading to the argument that there are no white victims in a second Trump term, only volunteers.
