Every aspect of life has its own authority structures, including our homes, churches, schools, and society as a whole. When we fail to understand these levels of authority, we often end up frustrated, confused, and even rebellious. In part two of Levels of Authority, Duane Sheriff teaches God's divine order of authority and emphasizes why this understanding is crucial for every individual, especially our young people.God's government stands as the highest authority, and all other forms—self-government, family, church, and civil—flow from Him. When a lower authority attempts to overrule a higher one, corruption follows, leading to disorder and instability. Understanding authority not only provides protection but also empowers us to live with confidence and order in a culture filled with confusion.

In this episode, we examine what the Bible says about the relationship between the Christian and government. Some of the questions we will consider: Must Christians pay taxes to a government that spends money wastefully or promotes evil? Can Christians vote? Can Christians run for political office? What should the relationship be between the church and government? biblequestions.org

Chapters 22 and 23 of the Westminster Confession explain the our responsibilities to God with reference to oaths we take and how we relate to the civil magistrate. Join us as we think through what these chapters teach.
Today I share some thoughts on David Lipscomb's use of Scripture in his classic work titled Civil Government: Its Origin, Mission, and Destiny, and the Christian's Relation to It. Although this book is well over a hundred years old, it is surprisingly relevant today as Christians wrestle with how to understand the Bible and how to apply it.
Recast of episode aired 1-13-2021We don't want to pour more fuel in the fire that surrounds us today. But, it needs to be said that Christians are called to interact with the government and society in a vastly different way. Today we welcome back Don and discuss the joys of living our vocations as called children of God through Jesus. What does that mean for us in this changing society?
John McGowan joins the podcast again to discuss a recent republication of Hannah Arendt's essay "Civil Disobedience, which responds to Plato's Crito, Thoreau's "Resistance to Civil Government," and the leftwing mass movements of the 1960s. John and I discuss Arendt's importance as a theorist of revolution and totalitarianism, as well as the complex life of the idea of civil disobedience and its reception by Tolstoi, Gandhi, and King.
Preaching from 1 Peter 2:11-16, how does Peter form and fashion our relationship to the government?

As Protestant Christians, we believe that the Bible is the final authority in all matters of faith and practice because it is the very word of God. Despite what some seem to think, God's word has much to say about the civil government and Romans 13:1-7 is a key passage. With another important election, it will benefit us greatly to consider what God says about his purposes for, the authority of, and our relationship to the civil government.
Civil Government : Romans 13 : Pastor Raef Chenery : 09-29-24 by Park Community Church
The government's primary role is to be a terror to bad conduct bringing punishment and justice. This is for the good of the citizens and the good of the church.
What is the Christians responsibility to be subject to the governing authorities? Does subjection mean perfect and absolute obedience? A Christians subjection to the governing authorities is a posture of the heart, a general willingness to cooperate with the authorities God has put over us.
Dabney warns that governments are often eager to lean on the church to do its bidding and that if we are not careful the energies of the church will be subsumed under the aims of the state. The establishment of the church by the state almost always turns out better for the state than the church.
In this sermon, we wrestle with the problem that we often trust our political will to transform our community more than the power of Gospel love and proclamation.

With a proper understanding of God's design for civil government, the church is to be a law abiding people. We must have a biblical way of thinking about civil government. There are three spheres of sovereignty, and yet each sphere does not have absolute authority. Only God has absolute authority.

God has clearly set the boundaries of human authorities in His Word: civil, church, and family. Do you know what the Bible has to say about the rightful role of government? Listen in on this conversation as Caleb and Lindsey discuss the Bible's teachings concerning how Christians ought to relate to governing authorities and the Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates. This episode, Part 8 on God's Word as our ultimate authority, is a part of an ongoing series on Building a Thoroughly Christian Worldview. Everyone has a worldview whether they realize it or not, and more than likely their worldview is not consistent with itself. The Bible is our only standard for all of life and truth. We are called to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). We can only do this by knowing God's Word. Listen in to this multipart series as Caleb and Lindsey discuss what a worldview is, how to evaluate your worldview for inconsistencies, and also ways to apply God's Word and mission to every area of your life. As disciples we are meant to have a "Kingdom Mindset." Many Christians today have more of a defeatist mindset and live defensively instead of offensively. The Christian's worldview directly applies to how Christians engage the culture, and this is what we will be discussing in future episodes during this series. **THIS MONTH'S SPONSOR:** Christian Light Education Read Lindsey's Personal Review of CLE's Horticulture Today High School Elective: https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/teach-valuable-life-skills/ Read Lindsey's Personal Review of CLE's Learning to Read Program: https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/learning-to-read-cle-review/ Visit Christian Light Education's Website: https://christianlight.org/shop-curriculum >> **FREE** Christian Worldview Family Field Guide >> Download Your Copy Now! >> All resources listed in this episode can be found on the Reformed Faith and Family Recommended Resources page here. An interview with Pastor Taylor Drummond about his article “Fool's Gold?: A libertarian analysis of VanDrunen's account of state legitimacy,” which appreciatively, but critically, examines arguments in the book Politics After Christendom by Dr. David VanDrunen. Pastor Drummond introduces himself and recounts how he became a confessional, Calvinistic Baptist, and a libertarian-anarchist. He speaks about how VanDrunen's biblical arguments for the legitimacy of the state fail his own standard for justifying the state. Drummond also explains how VanDrunen's theoretical argument is at odds with his own view of law, justice, and rights, and is in tension with many of his economic and theological insights.https://reformedlibertarians.com/017Main Points Of Discussion00:00 Introduction00:32 Episode description01:50 About Pastor Drummond06:54 VanDrunen's brief biblical arguments and Drummond's response17:22 Monopoly, Noahic covenant, and negative natural rights24:26 VanDrunen's view of customary legal order27:50 Drummond's response on law and rights34:44 Need for clearly distinguishing just and unjust coercion38:56 Protectionism, sin, politicization, and inefficiency47:29 Concluding thoughtsAdditional ResourcesArticle discussed: “Fool's Gold?: A libertarian analysis of VanDrunen's account of state legitimacy,” by Taylor Drummond: https://libertarianchristians.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/CLR-5-Drummond.pdfPolitics After Christendom by David VanDrunen: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0310108845/ Taylor Drummond congregation: Grace Community Church, Allentown PA https://gracecommunityallentown.org/ Politics substack: https://thearchy.substack.com/ Theology site: https://servantofthesovereign.wordpress.com/ Other books mentioned: The Road To Serfdom by Friedrich Hayek: https://mises.org/library/book/road-serfdom The Law by Frederic Bastiat: https://mises.org/library/book/law Foundations of Economics: A Christian View by Shawn Ritenour: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1556357249/ The Conservative Mind by Russell Kirk: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0895261715/ For A New Liberty by Murray Rothbard: https://mises.org/library/book/new-liberty-libertarian-manifesto Christian Libertarian Review call for papers 2024: https://libertarianchristians.com/2024/02/03/call-for-papers-2024-volume/ The Reformed Libertarians Podcast is a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute: https://libertarianchristians.com and a member of the Christians for Liberty Network: https://christiansforliberty.netAudio Production by Podsworth Media - https://podsworth.com
Some Christians in our day push back against the idea of “the separation of church and state,” but David VanDrunen argues that, in reality, this is a crucial distinction taught throughout the Bible. Eric Metaxas’s new book, Letter to the American Church, Biden’s use of the image of God in proclaiming Transgender Awareness Day, and 29 years of direct legal and policy advocacy have brought home to me with increasing urgency observations made about Christianity and society by Abraham Kuyper in the 1890’s. Is Christianity and the work and activism of most Christians in law, civil government, and public policy Christ-less? How does it matter? John Owen’s Christologia provides a needed answer.

As COVID-19 swept the globe in 2020, civil authorities around the world issued lockdowns and social distancing edicts which, in effect, forbade churches to gather for corporate worship. Many pastors and church leaders caved to the pressure, opting for exclusively online services, while others scrambled to formulate a biblical response that upheld God's command to Christians to assemble as a body for worship. Once such pastor was Timothy Decker, who grappled with this key question: Does Romans 13 command Christians an unqualified obedience toward the civil magistrate? Decker's study led his church to a deeper understanding of this pivotal text, as they opened their doors during COVID. In this podcast, Scott Brown and Jason Dohm interview Decker about his new book, A Revolutionary Reading of Romans 13, in which Decker shares what he learned. Decker's contention is that biblical submission to earthly authorities—which is commanded by God—is always qualified. Even as a wife or child is not bound to obey an unlawful command by a husband or father, neither is the church bound to an unlawful edict by the state. Romans 13 teaches lawful subjection to the civil magistrate, Decker maintains, while at the same time affirming a Christian's duty to resist tyranny when the state violates God's prescriptive Word.
