No Ghoulish Green Monsters Here Author Dawn Secord joins host Laura Reeves to discuss the release of her new book “No Ghoulish Green Monsters Here.” Secord describes a lifetime in dogs, her time with Irish Setters and her childhood starting with Milk Bone snacks. “Combining my love of art and writing and looking back on being a child with so many kids not acclimated with dogs and not realizing what a wonderful opportunity it is to find companionship,” Secord said. “Find security and to use words to make the kids feel safe. And so in 1984 it was laid on my heart when I got my first Irish Setter that I was going to do a book about an Irish setter for children and share my love of my dogs. “I want to give parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and nieces, whomever, a book to sit down and talk about dogs and talk about their fears. This first book has messages about facing fears because everybody's afraid of something. And I wanted kids to know it's OK to be afraid and talk about it. Don't be afraid by yourself. “The book comes with a free download that's on my website. So if they want to make it into an educational tool, it's got a glossary and it talks about Irish Setters. I even made maps for kids to learn how to read a map and some pictures and coloring book pages for the little ones, some things to research for the older ones. So I really wanted parents or adults, whoever they are, they have an opportunity to turn the book into an educational opportunity if they desired. “I really want to promote that having a purebred dog is cool. So that's one thing. For the writing, I feel that it's timeless and I want to make an impact.”

Early in the third century, a small group of Greek Christians began to gain prominence and legitimacy as intellectuals in the Roman Empire. Examining the relationship that these thinkers had with the broader Roman intelligentsia, Jared Secord contends that the success of Christian intellectualism during this period had very little to do with Christianity itself. With the recognition that Christian authors were deeply engaged with the norms and realities of Roman intellectual culture, Secord examines the thought of a succession of Christian literati that includes Justin Martyr, Tatian, Julius Africanus, and Origen, comparing each to a diverse selection of his non-Christian contemporaries. Reassessing Justin's apologetic works, Secord reveals Christian views on martyrdom to be less distinctive than previously believed. He shows that Tatian's views on Greek culture informed his reception by Christians as a heretic. Finally, he suggests that the successes experienced by Africanus and Origen in the third century emerged as consequences not of any change in attitude toward Christianity by imperial authorities but of a larger shift in intellectual culture and imperial policies under the Severan dynasty. Original and erudite, Christian Intellectuals and the Roman Empire: From Justin Martyr to Origen (Penn State UP, 2020) demonstrates how distorting the myopic focus on Christianity as a religion has been in previous attempts to explain the growth and success of the Christian movement. It will stimulate new research in the study of early Christianity, classical studies, and Roman history. Benjamin Phillips is an MA student in History at Ohio University. This week we welcome Dr Martin Bush to the podcast to discuss the role of imagery and visualisation in the circulation of science and knowledge. Martin is a member of the HPS department at the University of Melbourne who focuses primarily on the role of imagery in the popularisation and teaching of astronomy. In this episode, he takes us through the different arenas in which science is produced, discussed and circulated, and how these spheres can influence, or gate keep knowledge from each other. Martin then looks at the role that imagery and visualisation plays in the popularisation and understanding of scientific knowledge, and at the use of imagery as documentary evidence. In Episode 9 I sit down and have the pleasure of interviewing NHL Alumni and recently retired American Airlines Captain, Al Secord.Over the last couple of years we have been fortunate to get to know Al off the ice and he is by far one of our favorite people to sit down with and chat. From hockey to health, Al is honest and passionate about everything he touches in life and this makes for great conversation as well as life perspective.Drafted in the first round of the NHL draft, 16th overall, to the Boston Bruins Al began a very successful NHL career in 1978. Al made the Bruins roster as a 20 year old and in our podcast we discuss what his first taste of an NHL camp was like and what it took to make the roster of the an NHL team.Al had his best season while playing for the Chicago Blackhawks where he scored 54 goals and 32 assists in the 1982-83 season. In total Al played 766 games in the NHL and notes he was told he was in approximately 170 fights. That is approximately one fight every 4 to 5 games for 12 years. This was at a time where the NHL was like other contact sports and did not fully know the long term effects of concussions and traumatic brain injuries. After Al retired from the NHL he started his second successful career as a pilot. Al eventually was hired by American Airlines where he served as captain and just recently retired last month after a long and successful career in the air.Regardless if it was the NHL or the American Airlines, what we love best about Al is how he pours his heart into everything he touches and it is contagious when you sit down and talk with him.In our podcast we discuss his journey as an NHL player, American Airline Pilot, parent and health advocate and what he has done to keep his health in tip-top shape. 65 years young and Al looks like he is in his 20-30's on the ice, keeping up with the younger generations still on the ice.Al shares his experience with the Amen clinic and his brain scan and we discuss how his follow up brain scans at the Amen clinic actually improved over the years as he implemented various brain based strategies to support and improve his brain function. From regular labs, dialing in nutrition, to the right types of exercise, Al shares his inspiring story on how concussions and Traumatic Brain Injuries can have a gameplan post career where you can take control and focus on supporting your future and brain health. We hope you enjoy today's episode featuring Al Secord. Please share and let others know if they have had a history of concussion and TBI that there is hope out there!

We are celebrating Native American Heritage Month and the NEA National Heritage Award by revisiting Theresa Secord—a 2106 awardee and Penobscot basketmaker. Although Secord's great-grandmother was renowned for her baskets woven from the bark black ash tree and sweet grass, Theresa herself didn't learn to weave until she was an adult. In the podcast she discusses returning to the reservation after getting a master's degree in geology and becoming interested in the traditional cultural art forms of the Wabanaki and learning basketry from an elder Penobscot basketmaker. Becoming an accomplished and award-winning artist, Secord talks about her growing awareness that basket-making was close to becoming a dying art form and her determination not to watch this fade into history; she discusses co-founding the Maine Indian Basketmaker's Alliance—an organization she led for 21 years, and her continuing commitment to conservation to preserve the ash tree against the destruction of the invasive emerald ash borer beetle. Join us online on November 17 when we premier the documentary called “Roots of American Culture” a celebration of the artistry of the 2022 National Heritage Fellows. Check out our website arts.gov for more details. We'd love to know your thoughts--email us at artworkspod@arts.gov.

Rich Schultz & CT Chad Toms talk crazy, funny stories on Secord Lake. Hear about the time when CT almost killed the power for ½ the lake and hear Rich talk about how he got super duper tight with the Amish peeps. And CT shares the time when he had 911 called on him and he had to come to the door in an oversized dish towel with scenes of every scary movie he's ever seen running through his head. And they boys reminisce about the time JagerBomb Rich almost killed them with a flurry of JagerBombs.
