Send us Fan MailNEW EPISODE - I'm so pleased to welcome back my friend Peter Wehner — political thinker, former White House speechwriter, regular contributor to The Atlantic and The New York Times, and one of the most thoughtful Christian voices speaking into America's moral and political turmoil.Peter joins me to discuss four remarkable recent *essays that confront some of the darkest and most urgent questions facing our nation right now. Together, we explore the rise of militant Christian nationalism, the theology and rhetoric surrounding Pete Hegseth, and the dangerous fusion of political grievance, religious certainty, and the language of holy war.Peter examines how biblical texts — especially the imprecatory Psalms — are being weaponized to justify aggression, vengeance, and even bloodlust in modern political life. We talk about the influence of figures like Douglas Wilson, the appeal to “King David” spirituality, and why many respected biblical scholars insist that the conquest ethic of the Old Testament cannot be used as a model for Christian political action today. As Peter argues, the Sermon on the Mount stands as a direct repudiation of that worldview. We also step back from the headlines to reflect on our deeply fractured culture — our polarization, loneliness, loss of community, and longing for what the Hebrew Scriptures call shalom. Along the way, we draw wisdom from voices like Desmond Tutu, Rowan Williams, and David Bentley Hart. This is an honest, sobering, and ultimately hopeful conversation about faith, power, truth, and the soul of America. I hope you'll join us.*See SHOW NOTES for Pete's four recent essays.Support the showBecome a Patron - Click on the link to learn how you can become a Patron of the show. By the grace of God, we have seen a genuine Christian community grow up in our midst over the years. We have wanted to be a Bible people, which means Christian liberty on issues like alcohol, and so we have not allowed the traditions of men to place any extra-biblical restrictions on us. God gave wine to gladden the heart of man (Ps. 104:15), God urges the purchase of strong drink with the tithe money (Dt. 14: 26), and the Lord Jesus Himself uses wine in the sacrament of the new covenant (Luke 22:20; 1 Cor. 11:25). “Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations—“Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle”” (Col. 2:20–21, NKJV). So never let a legalist bind up your liberty in Christ. But our liberty in Christ has a left flank also, and in a community like ours, and in times like ours, it is far too easy to leave that flank exposed. I am talking about the threat of license, which in the name of liberty abuses God's grace even more than does the legalist. King's Cross Church is a member congregation of the CREC in Moscow, ID. We know that 2016 was a tough year. We saw a difficult election cycle and lost more celebrities than one would like to count. Most people are excited to see 2016 go. We at the Laymen's Cup have a lot to be thankful for. We have be been blessed beyond our wildest imagination. The show has grown by leaps and bounds. We have been downloaded on every continent, and people have reached out to us from numerous states and other countries. The Laymen have had some ups and downs, too. One of our own, Patrick, went on into ministry, and even though we are really proud of him, it was hard to see him go. Then Bob came on, and now we can't imagine doing the show without him. We held our first annual golf tournament that raised money for Shaun and Ann's adoption. People came from all over to help us raise money and had blast doing it. We want to say thank you for all the interviews, from Dr. Danny Akin, Dr. Frank Turkey, Dr. Douglas Wilson, and the many friends who came to hang out, like Travis, McCoy, and John. We owe a huge thank you to Dr. Chris Griggs, our pastor, and the one who holds us in check. Thank you to all who have participated in the show. The Laymen are especially thankful for all of the listeners. We do the show, first for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and also for you. We love all the reviews, emails and messages throughout the year. It encourages us each time someone reaches out to us. We hope that in everything thing we do we bring honor and praise to Jesus. Our hope is always to portray the Gospel in every conversation. Thank you for listening. You can find us on iTunes, and we are on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @laymenscup. Please pray for us, as we pray for you. Kemp, Shaun, Wes, and Bob.
Muziek: Khi Rho Beats
In this episode, Douglas Wilson opens with commentary on Candace Owens and the fallout surrounding Charlie Kirk's assassination, then turns to Scripture's language about an evil and adulterous generation, spiritual unfaithfulness, and the way false teachers exploit lust under religious pretenses, before closing with a review of David Talcott's Plato and a reflection on whether Plato deserves a more sympathetic reading than he is often given. For more from Doug, subscribe to Canon+: https://canonplus.com/
The recent surge of Christianity has been heavily influenced by vocal Catholics, or at least those who give them the platforms to speak. This includes Candace Owens, Tucker, Carlson, Megyn Kelly, Nick Fuentes, etc. It has also been influenced by is Israel propaganda in making a link between Jesus and the modern state of Israel. The First Amendment guarantees religious freedom from both restriction and force. It applies to atheists as much as it applies to Islam and general Christianity, including Catholicism. The question is, are Christians in general willing to allow their faith to be mocked because of Jewish propaganda; are Christians willing to allow Catholics to be targeted by people like Douglas Wilson, and Pete Hegseth, in the name of the defeating antisemitism or religious competition? The same goes for free speech. Are we willing to tolerate mockery and restriction of both religion and speech for the benefit of one group or another? Are we really unable to see that lowering a group from the position of superiority that they placed themselves in, and treating them not with special privileges but with blind equality, is not hateful or antisemitic? On the other hand, are we really unable to see that people who elevate themselves over others in these ways are really anything but human. Ion their attempt to appear morally and spiritually superior, they belittle the rest of humanity, proving that they are not superior or equal; they are inferior because they are a threat to civilization and the law which holds it together. When it's acceptable to condemn one group and not another with speech, then we do not live in a free society. When Carrie President Prejean Boller, a Catholic, can be fired from the Religious Liberty Commission for expressing her religious views, we do not have religious freedom.*The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. In this episode, Douglas Wilson reflects on the birth of modern Israel, tracing the Balfour Declaration, the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, British promises to Jews and Arabs, and the wars that followed, before turning to a study of hatred in Scripture—how it marks the natural man, contradicts life in Christ, and yet can be righteous when directed against sin and iniquity—and closing with a review of Blood, Money, Power, a book arguing that Lyndon B. Johnson may have had a role in the assassination of John F. Kennedy. For more from Doug, subscribe to Canon+: https://canonplus.com/

In this solo episode, I explore a tension that I've encountered both personally and clinically—the way some high-control religious communities can feel deeply warm, relational, and inviting at first, and yet over time reveal a much more rigid and exclusionary structure underneath.I begin with a personal reflection on being re-exposed to Douglas Wilson while listening to conversations about Christian nationalism, and how his winsome, calm, and disarming tone stands in stark contrast to what I see as deeply dangerous ideas—especially when it comes to democracy, pluralism, and the ability for real difference to exist. From there, I unpack what I'm calling aesthetic hospitality—the way warmth, attentiveness, and belonging can function as a kind of soft power that draws people in before they've had the chance to fully discern what they're stepping into.Drawing on psychoanalytic insights, including Todd McGowan's critique of community and James Hollis' distinction between internal and external authority, I explore how belonging in these systems is often conditional, particularly for LGBTQ+ individuals, and how exclusion is frequently reframed as truth, morality, or righteousness. This episode is ultimately an invitation to develop a deeper kind of discernment—not just asking whether a community is kind or welcoming, but whether it can actually tolerate your full existence without requiring you to become someone else in order to belong.
In this episode, Douglas Wilson returns to the question of immigration, arguing that the real issue is not immigration versus no immigration but rates of immigration. He then explores the morally neutral verb metastrepho, to turn, showing how turning from vice to virtue is repentance while turning the gospel is to pervert the gospel of Christ, before concluding with a review of Plato’s Revenge and its case that the spiritual world is a necessary, empirically demonstrable reality. Many churches underestimate the impact their worship could have on culture. Yet it is a vitally important conversation if we are to truly be salt and light in the world as faithful covenant communities.Henry VanTil famously said that culture is religion externalized. Thus, how we worship will inevitably affect the type of culture we produce. In this episode, we sit down with Doug Wilson to discuss covenant renewal worship and how churches should consider their worship practices, as well as their impact on the type of culture they cultivate within the church and beyond.Douglas Wilson is the longtime pastor of Christ Church in Moscow, Idaho, a Reformed theologian, author, and leading voice in classical Christian education and cultural engagement. He is the founder of Logos School, a key figure behind New Saint Andrews College, and a co-founder of the Association of Classical Christian Schools, helping to shape the modern classical Christian education movement. A prolific writer and public thinker, Wilson has authored numerous books on theology, education, family, and culture, and is known for his forthright defence of historic Christian orthodoxy in the public square.

This SASF episode breaks down the life and legacy of Charlie Kirk. What a story: How the devil messed up by killing Charlie, because martyrdom after Christ doesn't work. Charlie's cheerful masculinity made him a target. Why Charlie's "free speech" approach prevents civil war. Crazy progressives in public high schools and universities only "reproduce" because of your children. Live like Charlie by faithfully "raking the gravel" in your life. Gary discusses several news stories involving Charlie Kirk and Douglas Wilson. The Left is getting nervous and beginning to reveal its hand with these "red meat journalism" hit pieces. Thinking they are exposing crazy views by the Right, they are actually revealing their own insanity and illogical views. The presuppositional approach has that effect, as Greg Bahnsen showed years ago. Watch the CNN interview with Doug Wilson here.
Is there a clear and deliberate agenda against men and boys in culture today? Or, is it simply a byproduct of the relative ease of modern times. My guest today, Pastor Douglas Wilson, makes the case that it's a combination of both and, more accurately, than “modern times,” a result of “wealthy times.” And, if that is the case, what should men do for ourselves and for the future of our children and this world? Today, Doug and I talk about rebuilding strength and order in our lives and instilling it in our boys, how exactly men can step up against the lunacy and degeneracy we see in modern culture, why men make inferior women and vice versa, why reality calls for us, as men, to reckon with the dangerous times in which we live, and why masculinity cannot (and, should not) be legislated away.
