I had my first business from 2012 to 2016 as a Fundraising Consultant. I ended it after 4 years because I was done with the ups and downs of owning a business.Sure, there was shame, BUT my nervous system was so calm that I manifested my dream job and dream boss, with whom I am still good friends to this day.Maybe YOU are also thinking of ending your business or doing it on the side, and as someone who ended their first business, there's NO shame in it. It's about honoring where you're at.I've been talking to more people who are getting frustrated with their business right now. And there can be different reasons:The economyElection yearBeing overwhelmed Things that were once working are no longer workingLower cash flow this year than normalHere's the reality no one is talking about: 2020 and 2021 were an anomaly. Many businesses grew, but it was because we were stuck at home from the pandemic, including mine, that doubled. But many of us are reevaluating. I want to emphasize that if you feel like it's only you feeling this way, it's not. It's rough out here now, and shifting feels like a must.Even for me, here are some shifts I'm doing:I'm simplifying my business by only working with 24 clients at one timeLooking for more corporate contracts with companies like LinkedIn with my courses.Recently, I've also been approached by a couple of Fortune 500 companies to do executive coaching with their leaders.Whether you're thinking of closing your business, simplifying it, pivoting, or having it on the side, remember, we're all evolving. Life is more than work; it's about experiences and making memories. This is why my friend and Marketing Strategist Monica Schrock and I had a vulnerable talk about why there were times when we went back to the workforce. We discuss the impacts of the economy, personal well-being, shifting personal priorities, and honoring each stage of life. What We Cover in This Episode:Navigating Business and Personal ChallengesThe Business of Balancing: From Full-Time Jobs to FreelancingBoosting Credibility and Skills in BusinessIf you would like to see how to work with me to create a more sustainable life where you can be more present with yourself and create your own checklist of success that's not created by society and loved ones, then schedule a complimentary legacy business and career review at elainelou.com/callResources Mentioned:Subscribe to the Business & Career Diaries Newsletter: elainelou.com/joinWhere We Can Connect:Apply to the Business & Career Mastermind: elainelou.com/mastermindSchedule a Business & Career Audit call with me to see if it's a good fit to work together: elainelou.com/callFollow the Podcast on Apple: WOC and Allies: Business and Career RealtalkFollow the Podcast on Spotify: WOC and Allies: Business and Career RealtalkFollow Elaine on Instagram: @elainelou_Connect with Elaine on LinkedIn: Elaine Lou CartasCheck out our other podcasts for Women of Color

Nick Schrock, the innovative mind behind Dagster Labs and the renowned co-creator of GraphQL, joins me on Tech Talks Daily. Nick takes us through his illustrious journey from his foundational days at Facebook, where he spearheaded the Product Infrastructure team, to his visionary leap into solving some of the most pressing issues facing data and ML engineering today through Dagster, his open-source data orchestration platform. Nick shares insights from his experience at Facebook, elaborating on how internal tools like React and GraphQL revolutionized the company's development practices and set new benchmarks for the developer community worldwide. His transition from Facebook to founding Dagster Labs was driven by a deep-seated desire to address the complexities and inefficiencies in data infrastructure, a challenge he identified as a critical pain point for engineers across industries. Throughout the conversation, Nick delves into the core areas of data orchestration, highlighting the importance of enabling practitioners to have end-to-end ownership of data pipelines without the need for a centralized team. This approach, he argues, is pivotal in the era where data and ML engineering are becoming fundamental to decision-making processes both in human and business contexts. Much of the discussion is dedicated to exploring the future of open source in the SaaS-dominated landscape and the operational convergence of ML, AI, and data engineering. Nick emphasizes the delicate balance required in managing an open-core business model and shares personal anecdotes about the "Engineering Founder's Dilemma" — the intricate dance between leading the vision and running the company. Listeners will gain a unique perspective on the evolution of data platforms and engineering, underscored by Nick's advocacy for a robust, community-driven approach to open-source development. He sheds light on the challenges and rewards of building a platform like Dragster, which aims to simplify and democratize data infrastructure for companies of all sizes. Nick also advises technical founders on maintaining equilibrium between their visionary roles and their companies' operational demands. This episode is a deep dive into the mechanics of data orchestration and a masterclass in leadership, innovation, and the transformative power of open-source projects in addressing complex engineering challenges.

We welcome David Schrock to discuss his book, The Royal Priesthood and the Glory of God, in which he presents a biblical theology that explores the theme of priesthood throughout the Bible. The book demonstrates that the concept of priesthood, starting with Adam in the Garden of Eden, is central to understanding God's plan for humanity and the overarching narrative of Scripture. Schrock argues that Adam, as the first priest in the biblical narrative, sets a pattern for priesthood that echoes through the patriarchs and is ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ. This priesthood is not limited to a specific lineage or tribe but is a calling for all of God's people. The book traces the development of this theme through the Old and New Testaments, showing how the priesthood develops from the Levitical priesthood of the Old Testament to the royal priesthood in Christ, fulfilling God's purpose for humanity to serve as mediators of his presence and ministers of his covenant. Schrock's work invites readers to see themselves as part of this royal priesthood, called to serve God and reflect his glory. David S. Schrock is pastor for preaching and theology at Occoquan Bible Church in Woodbridge, Virginia. He is a founding faculty member at Indianapolis Theological Seminary, where he teaches theology. It's the holiday season and all the new products and ads are popping up left and right. You know the ones! They're designed to make us think we'll never have this life-changing opportunity again. And those Playstation and Nintendo “launches” were successful because Mario Kart 64 was EVERYTHING!And now, small businesses launch using money and time to promote one thing. I used to be a launcher myself, promoting retreats and masterminds six times a year.I had spreadsheets and copy of emails, social media posts. I was constantly sharing my life online. It was exhausting. In this podcast episode, I'm joined by my marketing strategist, friend and client, Monica Schrock, on how we moved away from launching and towards a more sustainable life where we get consistent clients. For example, I'm not promoting anything but I:Just closed a deal with a company to film another course. I'm heading to Santa Barbara next week. This course is going live soon with a VERY WELL-KNOWN companySigned on a new 1:1 client, and have 4 calls already scheduled in December with others who want to work with usWorking on a contract with a 1 Billion dollar company to do executive coaching with their leadersMore important than these professional wins, personally:I DO NOT post everyday online because my business is NOT dependent on social mediaI've been able to settle into our new home making so many trips to Goodwill to donate things I don't useI'm doing Muay Thai (Thai Kickboxing) on a consistent basis again (at least 3x a week). This was a New Years Resolution that I was 11 months late in doing lolI've made more and worked less this year compared to last year which includes a 2 week vacation in Tanzania where I had no laptop, no wifi and had the trip of a lifetime climbing Kilimanjaro and going on a safariWhat We Cover in This Episode:The importance of consistency and simplicity to get clientsHow we've built a business not dependent on social media, and focused on referrals and actually being good at what you doUnderstanding conversion rates: Knowing lead-to-client conversion rates is key.If you would like to see how to work with me to create a more sustainable life where you can be more present with yourself and create your own checklist of success that's not created by society and loved ones, then schedule a complimentary legacy business and career review at elainelou.com/callRelated Podcast EpisodesEpisode 57.
