The question of Christianity and politics is hotly debated. It always has been. Some advocate for complete separation from all involvement, while others advocate for harnessing the power of government to implement Christian values. This week, we'll study a passage that shows a Christian's relationship to the government is both highly nuanced and highly sacrificial, and must point to the greatness of Christ.

In this episode I talk once again with Old Testament scholar Dru Johnson, who recently hosted a conference about Christianity and politics entitled “Bible First”. I ask him a wide range of questions about the political themes and consequences of the Torah and Old Testament. We explore the relationship between creation and human agency in Genesis 1-11, the patriarchal narratives and their role as shepherds of Israel, the Law as God's covenantal contract with Israel, how Deuteronomy defines the unique role of Israel's king, the failure of Israel and their king to keep covenant, particularly with Israel's desire to have a king like the nations around them in 1 Samuel 8, God's promise to David in 2 Samuel 7 that one of his descendants will establish an eternal kingdom, how the prophets deal with Israel's failures and future hope, and how this relates to the kingship of Jesus in the New Testament. This is a wide-ranging and engaging conversation which reframes our perspective on the Old Testament and its impact on Christian political theology.  Media Referenced:Dru's Website: https://drujohnson.com/X: @Dru_JohnsonBiblical Law Episode: https://libertarianchristians.com/episode/ep-239-understanding-biblical-law-with-dru-johnson/Genesis 3 Episode: https://libertarianchristians.com/episode/ep-232-genesis-35-and-the-problem-of-power/1 Samuel 8 Episode: https://libertarianchristians.com/episode/1-samuel-8-biblical-critique-of-monarchy/The Protestant Libertarian Podcast is a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute and a part of the Christians For Liberty Network. The hosts emphasize the importance of interpreting Scripture in its full context rather than selectively, warning listeners about politicians who use religious language to advance political agendas. They encourage Christians to think critically and biblically when evaluating public figures, regardless of political affiliation, and to engage thoughtfully with those influenced by such messaging.

What happens when pastors and politicians stay silent? The culture fills the void. Summary In this podcast episode, Vince Miller and his son-in-law, Minnesota State Rep. Elliott Engen, discuss the dangers of silence in both the church and the political arena. They unpack how cultural drift on issues like gender ideology, abortion, and education has accelerated because believers have stayed quiet. Together, they call men and Christians everywhere to break the silence, speak truth with grace, and lead courageously in their families, churches, workplaces, and communities. Reflection & Small Group Questions 1. Why do you think so many pastors and politicians have remained silent on cultural issues? 2. In your own life, where have you been tempted to stay silent instead of speaking truth? 3. Elliott mentioned toxic empathy—how do you see this playing out in today's culture? 4. What practical steps can you take to articulate biblical truth with love in your workplace or home? 5. How does silence lead to complicity in both politics and faith? 6. What did you think about the phrase: “If you're not doing politics, politics is doing you”? 7. What “small untruths” in your own life need to be confronted before tackling bigger cultural battles? 8. What hill are you personally willing to die on for your faith? 9. How can Christians model courage without being needlessly combative? 10. What does it mean for you to “live all in for Him who lived all in for you” in this cultural moment?

What if everything you thought you knew about the Bible's structure was making it harder to understand God's story? Pastor, author, and Bible engagement architect Randy Frazee joins host Robert on Refining Rhetoric to discuss why so many Christians—even those in Bible-believing churches—can't articulate the basic narrative of Scripture. The problem isn't a lack of commitment; it's how the Bible is organized. In this episode, you'll discover: ·       Why chronological Bible reading changes everything (and how The Story makes it accessible) ·       What really happens after you die—and why most Christians have it backwards ·       The surprising biblical truth: heaven isn't the final destination (hint: read Revelation 21-22) ·       Why the Garden of Eden matters for understanding eternity on the new earth ·       How Paul wrote the ultimate treatise on joy... from prison ·       The neuroscience that validates ancient biblical wisdom about depression and anxiety ·       Why gratitude is the #1 weapon against worry (backed by both Philippians and brain science) ·       The loneliness epidemic destroying Americans—and how proximity creates real community ·       Practical ways homeschoolers can combat isolation and build deeper connections Randy brings decades of pastoral wisdom, research-backed insights, and a refreshing perspective on biblical literacy. From explaining why Psalm 51 should be read right after 2 Samuel 11 (David's confession after his fall with Bathsheba) to unpacking why we'll still struggle at golf in the new kingdom (yes, really), this conversation bridges ancient truth and modern science.   This episode of Refining Rhetoric is sponsored by: 2026 Classical Conversations Family Cruise Have you heard? How are Christians to respond to our current civilizational moment? | with Os Guinness

Gospel Spice

Stéphanie welcomes Os Guinness back again on the Gospel Spice podcast. Os offers his analysis of the critical juncture facing Western civilization, particularly America, and provides a trustworthy framework for Christians to understand and thoughtfully respond to today's unique social, cultural, and political challenges. Os Guinness's recent book, Our Civilizational Moment, gave Stephanie a framework to understand the current news headlines, including the assassination and memorial service of Charlie Kirk, a devoted follower of Jesus who died for his beliefs. She and Os discuss the events as Os provides a uniquely courageous and nuanced perspective. Os urges Christians to think deeply, be courageous, and avoid simple partisanship. He advocates looking back to the biblical foundations—faith, family, education—and promoting them through partnership with like-minded individuals, including Jews. Christian maturity means engaging with nuance, confession, and humility, rather than tribalism or reactionary politics. He also hopes for a significant national conversation and rededication, especially approaching America's 250th anniversary, rooted in prayer, repentance, and recommitment to core biblical principles. THE CONVERSATION MORE IN DEPTH Os Guinness defines the concept of a “civilizational moment,” which is a critical point in a civilization's history when its foundational principles are either renewed, replaced, or lost, leading to decline. For the West, this moment involves deciding whether to return to its Judeo-Christian roots or continue on a path shaped by secular Enlightenment thought and radical ideologies. Every civilization faces a time when it must choose—renew what made it great, replace it with something else, or decline and fall. Os describes four major “waves” or movements currently undermining the West from within: ·         The Red Wave: Rooted in cultural Marxism, this movement has transitioned from economic revolution to influencing culture and institutions over decades. ·         The Rainbow Wave: The sexual revolution, driven not just by recent pop culture but by deep philosophical roots aiming to overturn centuries of Judeo-Christian and Jewish values about humanity and sexuality. ·         The Black Wave: Radical Islamism, which has allied itself with the other movements to destabilize Western civilization. ·         The Gold Wave : A nod to economic and technological factors, less emphasized during the conversation, but brilliantly explained in the book. Os explains their convergence—especially the surprising alliance between radical left movements and Islamism—as an effort to dismantle the traditional Western order. These movements often work together, despite their differences, because they share a goal of undermining the Christian-influenced foundations of Western civilization. Guinness reminds listeners that the West owes its structure to the Christian faith, rooted in Judaism. Other influences (Greek, Roman) contributed, but it was the biblical worldview—especially covenantal thinking from the Old Testament—that shaped institutions and ideals. A loss of conviction in these roots leads to confusion about identity and direction, both culturally and politically. America in particular is experiencing: ·         Ideological Polarization: A deep divide between visions anchored either in the American Revolution (biblical) or the French Revolution (secular, Enlightenment). ·         Institutional Polarization: Growing distrust between elites and ordinary citizens. ·         Crisis of Words: The breakdown of truthful, respectful communication, leading to increased violence and mistrust. Os cautions against seeking solutions purely through power or politics, whether from the left or right. Both extremes, if detached from biblical truth and justice, are dangerous. Hope is found in trusting God, returning to biblical truth, and joining together, beyond politics, to seek the good of society and witness to the gospel. Our  “civilizational moment” requires discernment, wisdom, and Christ-centered courage. Christians are called to be salt and light—engaging culture thoughtfully, grounded in truth, and seeking both the renewal of their nation and the flourishing of humanity worldwide. Os helps us identify the key cultural forces at play, and explore how Christians can wisely and courageously navigate this pivotal time. MORE ABOUT “OUR CIVILIZATIONAL MOMENT” Purchase the book here: https://www.amazon.com/Our-Civilizational-Moment-Waning-Worlds/dp/B0DL3LW558/  Where do you find the great civilizations of the world? In ruins, in museums, and in history books. Each one in its time rose, flourished, and then declined and fell. Is the West facing its own civilizational moment today? A civilizational moment is a critical transition phase in the rise, course, and decline of a civilization when a civilization loses its decisive connection with the dynamic that inspired it. Such a moment must then issue in one of three broad options: a renewal of the dynamic that inspired the civilization in the first place, a successful replacement of the original dynamic by another, or the decline of the civilization. In sum, the issue for a civilization in a civilizational moment is its vision of ultimate reality: Is the civilization in living touch with the ideas, ideals, and inspiration that created it in the first place and that it needs to continue to flourish? Or, with its roots severed, is it destined to decline and die? Guinness's analysis is wide-ranging and hard-hitting, but he ends with hope. This book is for all who care about the state of the world, who strive for a human-friendly future, and who are ready to make a stand for what matters. MORE ABOUT OS GUINNESS Os Guinness is an author and social critic. Great-great-great grandson of Arthur Guinness, the Dublin brewer, he was born in China in World War Two where his parents were medical missionaries. A witness to the climax of the Chinese revolution in 1949, he was expelled with many other foreigners in 1951 and returned to Europe where he was educated in England. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of London and his D.Phil in the social sciences from Oriel College, Oxford. Os has written or edited more than thirty books, including The Call, Time for Truth, Unspeakable, A Free People's Suicide, and The Global Public Square. In an unprecedented move, he read his Obergefell dissent from the bench—something he's never done before or since—warning that "five lawyers" were imposing their will without constitutional basis. Now, with a transformed Supreme Court and religious freedom wins piling up, Staver explains why 2026 could be the year everything changes. From the legal strategy that's already defeated "terrible decisions" to why Christians can't repeat the post-Roe mistakes, this episode reveals the inside story of the case that has constitutional conservatives hopeful.   Resources: https://lc.org/mat-staver https://lc.org/Kim   This episode of Refining Rhetoric is sponsored by: 2026 Classical Conversations Family Cruise Have you heard? What if you discovered you have more religious freedom right now than at any point in your lifetime—but nobody told you? In this episode of Refining Rhetoric, Robert sits down with Kelly Shackelford, President and CEO of First Liberty Institute, to discuss the remarkable string of religious freedom victories at the Supreme Court that most Americans don't even know happened. Shackelford, a constitutional scholar who has argued and won multiple cases before the Supreme Court, breaks down four major religious liberty wins achieved in just 13 months, including the landmark Coach Kennedy case that overturned 50 years of anti-religious precedent. Key topics covered: How the Supreme Court restored religious freedom protections in the workplace and schools What these victories mean for Christians, business owners, and educators Practical guidance on exercising religious rights at work and in public spaces The truth about what pastors can and cannot say from the pulpit regarding politics Why millions of Christian voters staying home could change election outcomes Resources available at FirstLiberty.org for understanding your religious freedom rights Shackelford emphasizes that Americans now have more religious freedom than they've had in their lifetime, but many don't realize the extent of their restored rights. This episode provides essential insights for anyone wanting to understand and exercise their constitutional religious liberties. What if the biggest threat to Christian values in America isn't hostile politicians—but Christians who refuse to vote? Bunni Pounds drops a bombshell statistic that will shake you: Christians are registering and voting at exactly the same rates as the general population. That means roughly half of Bible-believing Americans are voluntarily sitting out the very process that determines who governs their communities. While faithful Christians stay home on election day, secular activists are showing up in droves to elect school board members who push gender ideology, city council members who restrict religious freedom, and county officials who shut down churches. We're literally handing over our nation to people whose worldview is diametrically opposed to Scripture—and then wondering why our culture is falling apart. Bunni's journey from homeschool mom to political consultant to mobilizing nearly a million Christians reveals the stunning power of engaged believers and the devastating consequences of Christian apathy.   Resources: https://www.bunnipounds.com/   https://christiansengaged.org/   https://www.americareadsthebible.com/   This episode of Refining Rhetoric is sponsored by Grand Canyon University and Classical Conversations Plus Undergraduate Program: Is your homeschooler ready for what's next? Reflecting on his political and spiritual evolution, Jacob discusses how growing up in a conservative household, early exposure to mainstream political narratives, and critical high school experiences planted the seeds of skepticism towards government authority. He recounts his shift from conservative views to leftist politics during the Bernie Sanders era, ultimately leading to disillusionment with the left's focus on identity politics. This period of political homelessness opened the door to libertarian ideas, fueled by YouTube debates, podcasts, and local Mises Caucus meetups. Jacob highlights pivotal moments, like questioning the morality of taxation and the ethics of government authority, leading to his adoption of anarcho-capitalism. Throughout, he emphasizes the importance of universal morality, free markets, and the biblical call to peace and human flourishing. In this episode, Jacob aims to bridge personal testimony with philosophical exploration, showing how his Christian faith and libertarian values align in advocating for a peaceful, cooperative society free from coercive state control. In this episode of the Biblical Anarchy Podcast, Jacob revisits the pilot episode and foundational themes of the show, offering a refined and expanded exploration of biblical anarchy. He clarifies what "biblical anarchy" means by emphasizing the primacy of Scripture in Christian political thought, arguing that all authority must be evaluated against God's word. He traces the historical development of anarchist thought from Proudhon to Rothbard and explains how these ideas intersect with biblical principles. Diving into passages like 1 Samuel 8 and Romans 13, Jacob challenges common interpretations that justify centralized human authority, arguing instead that the Bible warns against monopoly governance and calls for a decentralized, just approach to human authority.Jacob also engages in a theological critique of the state, demonstrating how its coercive nature contradicts biblical principles of justice and proportionality. He addresses key objections, including the role of taxation and Jesus' statement about rendering unto Caesar, showing how these issues align with a Christian libertarian perspective. Through careful exegesis and historical analysis, this episode serves as a refreshed introduction to the podcast's mission—challenging statist assumptions and calling Christians to align their views on governance with the teachings of Christ.Full Episode Show Notes at BiblicalAnarchyPodcast.comThe Biblical Anarchy Podcast is part of the Christians For Liberty Network, a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute.Audio Production by Podsworth Media.

In this episode, Pastor Josh McPherson tackles the complexities Christians face in the current election, providing a three-tier framework for assessing political issues and candidates. By breaking down policies into realms of opinion, wisdom, and obedience, he explains why some political matters require Christian discernment and debate, while others demand a clear biblical stance. Pastor Josh highlights why this election cycle is unique, with most issues falling under the moral guidance of Scripture, and urges Christians to vote not just for candidates but for the values and policies that align with their faith. This episode aims to equip believers with tools for making informed, biblically grounded decisions this election season. Thanks for listening! Go to www.StrongerManNation.com for more resources.
