What does the Bible actually say about natural law? In part two of our three-part series, host Phil Cecil and his guest make the biblical case that God has woven a real, knowable moral order into creation — one that even unbelievers can perceive.Guided by three questions (Is there an objective moral order? Has it been revealed? Jonathan Drake is still long winded, Section Two of Spooner's "Natural Law" is still just one paragraph, and yet somehow this takes an entire episode. Predictably, it earns every minute. The central distinction of the night is one that sounds simple until you think about it: being illegal is always immoral, but being immoral is not always illegal. Legal violations empower the executioner. Moral violations empower your neighbors to stop returning your calls. Meting out the punishment reserved for one in the case of the other is itself a short circuit. Jonathan then turns to the concept of exigency, arguing that justice delayed is justice denied, and that the modern legal system's bloat and cost are not accidental. The episode closes with a deep dive into Kian vs. Florida, a SCOTUS case challenging whether a six-person jury satisfies the constitutional guarantee, and Florida's breathtaking response: overturning the precedent would jeopardize 90% of federal civil verdicts. Jonathan's take? That is precisely the point.

After eight weeks of vortexes, ferrocells, and the occasional theological mic drop, Jonathan Drake flies solo this week and pivots from physics to political philosophy, though the underlying framework holds up surprisingly well. The new series digs into Lysander Spooner's 1882 essay "Natural Law, or the Science of Justice," a short but dense treatise with one of the more delightfully blunt subtitles in nineteenth century literature. Jonathan walks through Spooner's biography, from his abolitionist convictions to the short lived mail company that nearly put the US Postal Service out of business, before diving into the essay itself. The central claim: living honestly is the entire foundation of justice, and consent means the authority to say no, not merely the power to. Jonathan also connects the dots back to the ether series, arguing that peace is grounding and war is a short circuit. If that sentence alone doesn't make you want to watch, nothing will.

Our latest Anchoring Truths Podcast episode centers on a 2026 case in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, covering New York City. This case presented a fascinating opportunity to discuss the intersection of Natural Law, international law, and contract law. Petersen Energia Inversora v. YPF (2nd Cir. opinion here) concerns how Argentina raised more than a billion dollars from American investors on the New York Stock Exchange with ironclad anti-nationalization guarantees—only to seize YPF in 2012 and, according to the plaintiffs, stiff minority shareholders out of $16 billion.We are thrilled to discuss this case in light of those larger considerations with one of the lawyers for Petersen, our old friend and returning podcast guest Mike Fragoso. This is Part 11 in a series celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Harvard University Press' 1985 publication of Richard A. Epstein's "Takings: Private Property and the Power of Eminent Domain." We continue our celebration of this anniversary with a fair use and transformative reading, taking a close look at ch. 6 continuing in the same section which Richard calls ""Takings Prima Facia," which makes the analogy between riparian rights and land rights. He titles chapter 6, "Possession and Use," because he's taking a look at the natural law of the natural coherent unity of the very nature of incidents of ownership (possession, use, disposition/abuse) and the American constitutional order, how these things interact and hang together, ensconced as it is in the purpose of the Constitution. That moral purpose is the protection of individual liberty against claims by a simple majority in a democracy, or judicial or executive fiat, or by the government in any other way in a taking of private property. It's also a good reflection on nature of property per se, whether public or private. For governments are owners as well as takers of property. Today we discuss the entirety of his chapter 6 from pp. 63 to 73.. At the end, this episode concludes with a reading of Psalm 60 in the KJV and January 30th in Streams in the Desert (Cowman Publications, Lost Feliz Station Lost Angeles, Calif. 1925 original non-woke edition). The purpose of the Declaration of Independence, wrote Thomas Jefferson, was “to place before mankind the common sense of the subject; [in] terms so plain and firm, as to command their assent, and to justify ourselves in the independent stand we [were] compelled to take.” To make their case they called on “the laws of nature and of nature's God,” on a Creator who endows humans with “inalienable rights” including the right to abolish a tyrannical government and replace it. Natural law and natural rights were central to the founders' thinking and I know of no one more qualified to help us understand why that's true than Dr. Hadley Arkes.

Though tracing this history in detail is a lengthy process, one simple truth stands out: After the fall of Adam and Eve, God gradually unfolded the perfection of His Divine Law to His people. In the same way, He draws each of us closer as we slowly convert and are purified through our spiritual journey.At the start, God established what we call the Natural Law. Adam and Eve understood moral truths naturally. However, after their sin, that Law became obscured and remains so today. God then made a covenant with Noah, promising never again to destroy the earth by water. With Abraham, the covenant deepened, as God promised to bless all nations through his descendants. Then came Moses, and with him, the Ten Commandments, a clear moral code for living. Ceremonial laws were introduced to guide the people in worship, and civil laws helped establish the Israelites as God's distinct people.Once Israel was established, God sent prophets to call for a deeper, internal transformation of heart. The prophets urged the people to repent, return to God, and prepare for the Messiah, who would fulfill the Covenant in its entirety.When Jesus arrived, His teaching illuminated a fuller understanding of the Law. In Him, all the promises and precepts of the Law were realized. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus established a New Covenant of grace, bringing about the fullness of redemption.This overview of salvation history is not only important from a historical perspective but also offers insight into how God relates to each of us personally. In the beginning of our own conversion, God meets us where we are: He calls us to be His children, and we are drawn to follow His commandments, avoiding serious sin. As we progress, our faith practices, including the sacraments, take on new depth. Gradually, we internalize the call to live from the heart, not just through outward observance. We begin to see God as an intimate and personal God, and we work to overcome even small attachments to sin. Ultimately, we are called to turn fully to the Gospel, letting it lead us into a deeper relationship with Christ.Recognizing this progression is essential for our spiritual journeys. If we fail to see this path, we might become complacent. Everything God revealed at the beginning of your conversion remains true, but the start is not the fulfillment. As you reflect on your life, ask yourself: Can I see how God has drawn me closer to Himself, deepened my faith, and called me into greater union with Him?God leads us gently, knowing that immediate perfection would be overwhelming. Still, He desires our daily growth. Each day is an opportunity for continued conversion, deeper transformation, and spiritual purification. The great saints have written about this journey, showing us the way to holiness.Reflect today on the call to be perfect. If that seems impossible, commit to one step at a time. The road to perfection is long, demanding, and difficult—but it is also freeing, transforming, and ultimately glorious. Though you won't become a saint overnight, you can take the next step toward holiness today. Say “Yes” to this journey and trust that God will lead you.My revealing Lord, little by little You have shown us the path to salvation.
