    Ivy Insights

The CrossPolitic Studios podcast is a powerful and refreshing Christian commentary podcast that boldly tackles cultural and political issues from a biblical perspective. This podcast is not afraid to pull its punches and consistently emphasizes the lordship of Jesus Christ in all aspects of life.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is its unwavering commitment to the truth of Scripture. The hosts fearlessly discuss current events, philosophy, and theology, all while keeping their focus on Christ as King. They provide informative and thought-provoking discussions that challenge listeners to think critically about their beliefs and engage with culture in a way that reflects their Christian worldview. Additionally, the variety of topics covered ensures that there is something for everyone.

Another great aspect of this podcast is the engaging and entertaining nature of the discussions. The hosts have a great chemistry together and their conversations are filled with laughter, making it enjoyable to listen to. Despite discussing serious topics, they manage to keep the mood light-hearted without compromising the depth or importance of their message.

While there are many positives about this podcast, one potential drawback is the inclusion of certain guests or viewpoints that some listeners may not agree with. This can be divisive for those who strongly hold certain beliefs but may find themselves challenged by differing perspectives. However, this also provides an opportunity for growth and learning as listeners are encouraged to engage with ideas even when they disagree.

In conclusion, The CrossPolitic Studios podcast is a game-changer in the Christian commentary genre. It offers practical insights from a biblical worldview, encourages critical thinking about current events, and glorifies God in a world that often rejects Him. While it may not always align perfectly with every listener's personal beliefs, it serves as an important resource for those seeking to navigate culture through a Christ-centered lens. Overall, this podcast is definitely worth listening to for anyone looking for engaging discussions on politics, culture, theology, and more from unapologetically Christian perspectives.

Seven Troubling Tim Walz Connections to Communist China https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2024/08/08/exclusive-seamus-bruner-seven-troubling-tim-walz-connections-to-communist-china/ Tim Walz’s Long Relationship With China Defies Easy Stereotypes https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/11/us/tim-walz-china.html Next we talk about our primary sponsor, Pray for China, where we encourage Christians from every US state to pray for every Chinese province. Today in “honor” of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, we are looking at the Chinese province of Heilongjiang (Black Dragon River), which is paired up with the state of Minnesota for prayer in our Pray for China intercession scheme. Heilongjiang translates literally as Black Dragon River, and is located in far northern China just south of the Black Dragon River, which separates it from Siberia to the north. Black Dragon River is known for its pine forests, rivers, lakes, and frigid winter weather (sound familiar?). It makes a natural fit for Minnesota. The capital of Black Dragon River is Harbin, but that same trip I also visited the towns of Suihua, Hegang, Yichun, Jiamusi, Shuangyashan, Jixi, Qiezihe, Qitaihe, Mishan, Hulin, and more. This short episode is very important to understanding a video clip of apologist William Lane Craig circulating on. social media in which he says he is unable to affirm or deny the Nicene Creed (325 A.D.) about the Son of God being begotten of the Father. His agnosticism on this subject drives home the importance of the metaphysical considerations that have passed from the evangelical mind. It also demonstrates what Kuyper said about apologetics and illuminates James 2:19.

Finally, check out my personal landing page PrayGiveGo.us for everything else, including our missions website, substack, books, and more… Why the Prison Pulpit? The goal is to remind people to pray for persecuted believers as Hebrews 13:3 teaches: “Remember those who are in prison, as bound with them.” We’ve looked at Wang Yi and Early Rain Church’s writings in the aftermath of their arrest and attack in 2018, but I’ve also regularly turned to other persecuted ministers who have gone before, such as Richard Wurmbrand, to give us a voice literally from prison. (Here you’ll find some free PDF books by Richard Wurmbrand: https://richardwurmbrandfoundation.org/) Help Bring Pastor John Cao Home https://revelationmedia.com/bringcaohome Help Us Equip and Encourage China’s Persecuted Church First, please pray for these Chinese leaders! Not only do they risk their lives to preach the Gospel within Communist China, but they also risk their freedom just to receive training that we easily take for granted. Pray that God would protect them, provide for them, equip them, and prepare them to continue serving faithfully in one of the most difficult mission fields on earth. Second, help sponsor a Chinese pastor and send him to one of these two Great Commission Conferences for the Chinese Church! The need is roughly $1k per attendee, and we are expecting 60 total. Nearly $45k has already been raised, which leaves about $15k to go. One final thought: whoever gives to wholly “sponsor” one Chinese missionary, I will personally greet them on your behalf and provide you with their name (or nickname), and general location of ministry within China, so you can continue to “adopt” them in prayer for going forward. Online donations can be made via the giving link at MCI3.org (https://givebutter.com/missioncatalyst). Checks can be sent to: Mission Catalyst / PO Box 73047 / Houston, TX 77272 (Memo: China) If you have any questions or would like to confirm your sponsorship or “adoption” of a Chinese missionary, feel free to email (bfwesten AT gmail dot com) anytime or donate directly at: MCI3.org Pray for China Cities of the Week (Aug 17-23): https://chinacall.substack.com/p/pray-for-china-aug-17-23-2026 Follow China Compass Thank you for listening! Pharmakeia — Show Notes: Fight Laugh Feast Documentary In this Fight Laugh Feast documentary, CrossPolitic traces a single Greek word — pharmakeia — from Homer's Odyssey through the book of Revelation to argue that the ancient world never separated medicine from sorcery, and that the modern West's attempt to draw that line may be its most consequential mistake. The film follows materialism's promise from the Big Bang to the therapy couch, tracks the ladder from prescription pharmaceuticals to ayahuasca retreats in Peru, and asks why the men who most loudly deny the existence of demons are increasingly found in dark rooms communing with named spirit entities. Along the way it draws on C.S. Lewis, Aldous Huxley, Peter Hitchens, and the testimony of a man who sat in fifteen ayahuasca ceremonies — and what finally set him free. The answer is not another ceremony. It is guilt, repentance, and the One who drank the cup fully awake so we wouldn't have to. Timestamps 0:24 — What is a woman? In this episode of The Based Boomer Podcast, Mike D’Virgilio examines the fall of Jerusalem, the destruction of the temple, and the horrific Roman siege that brought an end to the Old Covenant age. Drawing from Scripture and historical accounts, Mike explores the events surrounding A.D. 70 and their connection to Jesus’ warnings in Matthew 24. Was the Great Tribulation a worldwide event still waiting in our future—or was Jesus describing the catastrophic judgment that would fall upon Jerusalem within that generation? Mike makes the case that understanding A.D. 70 changes the way we read biblical prophecy, the Olivet Discourse, and the advance of Christ’s kingdom in history.

Scripture presents eternity as a reality every person must face. But for the Christian, the future is not merely about “going to heaven.” Our ultimate hope is resurrection and life in God's renewed creation. This message calls us to consider eternity seriously, repent of sin, trust in Christ alone, and live with urgency, compassion, and hope in light of the gospel.

The conversation ranges over the “why” of sacrifice, its significance in the Eucharist today, and even the Sword of St. Michael, a set of seven churches dedicated to St. Michael in a straight line from the Holy Land to Ireland. It’s an interesting and provocative conversation about topics not often discussed in the Reformed and Evangelical worlds. Daniel 7 presents one of Scripture’s clearest visions of Christ receiving His kingdom and everlasting dominion—but when does it happen? In this episode of The Millennial Medic, Jacob Glass concludes his study of Daniel 7 by examining the Ancient of Days, the divine courtroom, the thrones, the books, and the Son of Man coming on the clouds. Jacob connects Daniel’s vision with Revelation, Matthew 24, Ephesians 2, and the judgment of A.D. 70, arguing that Christ’s ascension and enthronement mark the transfer of kingdom authority from the beasts to the saints. Christ reigns with everlasting dominion. His kingdom cannot be destroyed—and His people need not fear earthly nations or demonic powers.

We cover a lot of important ground in this episode, assuming your definition of “important” includes pets behaving like tiny freeloading roommates, rock musicians attempting to communicate with the International Space Station, and comedians discovering that technically any location becomes a comedy club if somebody puts a microphone in it. We talk about the strange bargain of pet ownership, the glorious excess of rock concerts, and what happens when comedy escapes the controlled environment of an actual comedy club. Along the way, we get into audience interaction, stories from onstage and backstage, and the mysterious way music can unite a room full of strangers without requiring anyone to understand what the drummer is doing. Our conclusion: music really is its own language, performers should enjoy themselves when they play, and most shows are just “a show.” Unless something goes terribly wrong. Then you have a story.

Lastly, to learn more about our ministry endeavors or get one of my missionary biographies, visit PrayGiveGo.us! Today I’m going to look closer at four of the ten letters, each dealing primarily with prayer, from last weekend’s podcast on the China letters of C.S. Lewis: https://chinacall.substack.com/p/the-cs-lewis-china-letters (Also see this related content: C.S. Lewis, Burnt Marshwiggle, and the Brainwashing of Richard Wurmbrand) Here are the specific letters we cover in today's Prison Pulpit podcast: 1940- To his brother Warnie, on the burden of sympathy in a world of “instant” news: Barfield…is very much depressed, having a greater faculty than you or I for feeling the miseries of the world in general, which led to a good deal of argument, how far, as a man and a Christian, one ought to be vividly and continuously aware of, say, what it's like on the [front]line at this moment. I took the line that the present rapidity of communication, etc, imposed a burden on sympathy for which sympathy was never made: that the natural thing was to be distressed about what was happening to the poor Jones's in your own village and that the modern situation, in which journalism brings the Chinese, Russians, Finns, Poles and Turks to your notice each morning really could not be [faced] in the same way. 1946- To Dom Bede Griffiths, on a future Christian China and carrying all the world’s burdens: No, I don't think I feel like you, ‘disillusioned’. I think that though I am emotionally a fairly cheerful person my actual judgement of the world has always been what yours now is and so I have not been disappointed…When you say that nothing… has a value in itself, that everything has a value in relation to God, I couldn't agree with you more. And I often, like you, think that all the valuable future may lie with the Christened Chinaman. But one mustn't assume burdens that God does not lay upon us. It is one of the evils of rapid diffusion of news that the sorrows of all the world come to us every morning. I think each village was meant to feel pity for its own sick and poor whom it can help and I doubt if it is the duty of any private person to fix his mind on ills which he cannot help. (This may even become an escape from the works of charity we really can do to those we know). 1953- To Father Manna, on the Chinese “disaster” and Western culpability in the matter: [Dearest Father Manna, regarding] your article on [the] Chinese disaster…I used [to entertain many hopes for China myself], since missionaries have served there for many years not unsuccessfully: now it is clear, as you write, that all is on the ebb. Many have reported to me too, in letters on this subject, many atrocities, nor was this misery absent from our thoughts and prayers. Footnote- [In his letter] Fr Manna pleads for greater recognition of the gravity of Communist persecution of Christian hospital workers (as well as missionaries) in China. He argues that if [a French Communist Party leader] is arrested in the West, the Communists rise in protest. There should be no less an outcry on behalf of victimized missionaries. 1962- To Mary Van Deusen, on ignoring present pain to pray for the suffering in China: You are always in my prayers. As regards this particular matter [of moving], I sympathise both with [your husband’s] dislike of noise and your dislike of moves. I suppose one thing we must do about these minor crises is to get them into perspective. At the moment when the nuisance of the move is worst, remember that (at that precise moment) people are dying in pain and others are at their bedside, and in China children starving and men in prison camps and some of them being tortured. He also addresses common objections and demonstrates how historical evidence strengthens the case that John's original audience would have immediately recognized the reference. If Revelation was written in the first century, the number 666 may not point to a distant future ruler at all—but to a persecuting emperor already known throughout the Roman world.

This is our 100th riff session! To celebrate, we're including this sentence announcing our 100th riff session! The conversation starts with an unexpectedly serious debate over the difference between tin whistles, recorders, and the people who insist on using the correct musical terminology, revealing that musicians have an entire vocabulary devoted to preventing anyone from casually calling the wrong instrument a flute. That attention to detail quickly collides with stories about orchestras, concert etiquette, and the realization that some instruments carry far more cultural prestige than others, despite all of them ultimately requiring someone to blow into them. From there, the focus shifts behind the curtain of television and concert auditions, where the advertised search for raw talent turns out to involve a surprising amount of pre-screening, strategic casting, and carefully managed storytelling. Then into memories of buying concert tickets before everything moved online. Waiting in line becomes its own form of live theater, producing strange conversations, questionable life decisions, and the shared optimism that standing outside for hours is perfectly reasonable if it eventually leads to decent seats. The same perspective extends to modern stage productions, where even legendary bands rely on lighting, effects, and carefully engineered spectacle that is seems to treat music as kind of an afterthought. The discussion eventually drifts back to childhood, when entertainment required little more than a box containing pickup sticks, a Spirograph, or some other object that encouraged creativity instead of software updates. Those toys become reminders that entire afternoons could disappear without batteries, Wi-Fi, or downloadable content, even if the rules occasionally ended with someone insisting everyone else was playing incorrectly.

Most of us were raised to think of the public square as religiously neutral territory. School is just school. Law is just law. Science reports the facts and leaves the value judgments to us. Joe, Michael, and Nate spend this episode arguing that none of that holds up, and that Christians have paid a heavy price for believing it. They start with what a worldview actually is and why nobody gets to opt out of having one. Underneath any reading of the world sit answers to a few unavoidable questions: who God is, what a human being is, where morality comes from, what history is for. Those answers don't vanish when a culture stops going to church. They get relocated. Secularism has its own answers, and it enforces them. A good stretch of the conversation goes to where this shows up in practice: curriculum, legislation, news coverage, research funding, family life, politics, the arts. Along the way they draw a distinction that's easy to miss. Christians can and should use tools that unbelievers built. The trouble starts when they take on the foundations along with the tools. The objections get their turn too. Can't we just meet on common ground? Isn't this too black and white? Does it mean Christians can't cooperate with anyone? And the one that comes up most often: isn't secular government neutral by definition? The answer to that last one is that every legal order enforces some moral vision. The only question is whose.
