I offer the following explanation of Romans 7:20-21 by John Owen from 1667 that I hope provides a better understanding of the effect the “dominion of sin” has on what we can expect from our politic enagement and be helpful to understanding better the importance of tomorrow’s email about the real purpose of First Amendment’s Free Exercise Clause.

We covered a lot of ground in this conversation, which is another way of saying we wandered bravely from topic to topic with the confidence of people who believe curiosity is a form of planning. It started with musical dreams, which immediately ran into taxes, because nothing crushes artistic ambition faster than discovering the government would also like a solo. From there we examined the mysterious phenomenon of celebrity wealth, which turns out to be mostly an illusion created by sunglasses, confidence, and someone else paying for lunch. Naturally this led us to government conspiracies, because once you realize famous people don’t have as much money as you think, it’s only a short hop to assuming someone is hiding something. We discussed survival skills for the collapse of society, a scenario everyone is very confident about despite having trouble assembling IKEA furniture. The Doomsday Clock came up, which is reassuring because it’s good to know the end of the world is being managed by people who own a clock. We also talked about zombies, because every serious discussion eventually circles back to zombies, the one apocalypse we’ve fully rehearsed thanks to television. Along the way we touched on personal health journeys, which mostly involve learning what foods now hate us, and food preferences, which are deeply emotional and should never be questioned. Black pepper emerged as a cultural force, gold mining as an economic mystery, and hibernation as an underutilized lifestyle choice for anyone tired of the news. In the end, the conversation proved that modern life is complicated, confusing, and possibly ending soon, but at least we can laugh about it while seasoning our food aggressively and considering a long nap.

Today we look at how we can pray for the persecuted Christians in Iran, and other Muslim-majority nations, where believers are isolated and word is scarce. Leaders cast vision, explain strategy, lay out plans. But not every leader is successful at rallying people to a better future. Yes, much of it has to do with the leader's character and presence, for sure. But his ability to communicate the vision in a way that is clear and enticing is fundamental to his leadership. Earlier this month, there was a series of large scale arrests similar to those in 2018. Seven church members were arrested and confined, while five other members were brought in for questioning and then released. Several of the people arrested are elders of the church. Pray for those who have been arrested and their families… Pray for brothers and sisters in Chengdu and Deyang who have been taken away, are missing, or are under surveillance at home. Pray for God to grant them peace and protection, and to experience God’s presence and strength amidst uncertainty and hardship. Especially pray for the families and children to experience God’s comfort and love in suffering. Pray for the Lord to preserve brothers and sisters in the church, to love one another, and to be united and show the witness of Christ in times of trouble. Pray for Sister Z, who was taken to jail with her husband. Their two children were taken in with them, and spent the first night at the police station. Now they have been temporarily placed with their grandmother. Pray for a seminary student who was arrested and beaten in Chengdu recently. Pray for God’s comfort and grace to be with him, that he would know the presence of the Lord even in suffering. Pray for comfort and strength for his wife, and for him to be released soon. Continue to pray for Pastor Wang Yi, who was arrested in 2018 and continues to serve time in prison. Pray for the Lord’s presence to be with him in prison, that he may even be a witness to those with him in jail, and for his family and church on the outside. There’s a point in your business building efforts where you’ve given everything you have and the problem is still there. The choice is obvious. Quit, or keep going. It’s not complicated. But it most definitely is difficult. And that’s where most businesses die. Not because the problem was unsolvable. But because the owner ran out of will before they ran out of options.

Our society and law have progressed from prohibiting access to contraceptives in 1879 to a Supreme Court argument this week about human sexuality to U.S. Senator Josh Hawley asking a Doctor if a man can get pregnant.
