n this episode, Nick Bullock, senior pastor of Christ Church (PCA) in New Braunfels, Texas, joins Camden Bucey and Jim Cassidy to discuss an upcoming conference themed "Thy Word is Truth" (February 27–March 1, 2026) and, more importantly, why a sturdy doctrine of Scripture is not a luxury but a necessity for the church. They explore how Scripture's authority undergirds every other theological conversation, shaping how Christians understand God, worship him, and resist the many counterfeit "voices" that compete for allegiance. The conversation also highlights a timely pastoral burden: weak views of Scripture often leave believers vulnerable—whether to "me-and-my-Bible" isolation (confusing sola with solo), or to the perceived stability of traditions that promise rootedness without delivering true unity. By reconnecting the doctrine of Scripture to the doctrine of God—his truthfulness, immutability, and steadfast love—the episode invites listeners to hear again the shepherd's voice in God's word and to respond with reverent, regulated, Christ-centered worship. In this conversation from Austin, Jim Cassidy, Lane Tipton, and Camden Bucey reflect on the abiding value of the Westminster Shorter Catechism as a tool for cultivating a God-centered, covenantally rich, and confessionally rooted Christian life. The discussion highlights Jim's new book, Introducing the Faith: A Study of the Westminster Shorter Catechism, which serves as a written complement to his two free Reformed Academy courses through which he teaches the Shorter Catechism (Questions 1–38 and Questions 39–106). Together, the hosts trace their own histories with the Standards, demonstrating how catechesis shapes believers in the chief end of man—to glorify and enjoy God forever. They also explore how the catechism's covenant theology anchors the church in biblical teaching, safeguarding the glory of God amid contemporary pressures. The discussion turns to the weighty task of confessional subscription—its history, responsibilities, and the risks of revision. With pastoral clarity and historical attentiveness, the hosts encourage churches and teachers to handle their confessions with both gratitude and vigilance. Reformed Forum is happy to introduce a major new publishing initiative: the Redemptive-Historical Bible Studies series. In this episode of Christ the Center, Camden Bucey is joined by Ryan Noha, Jim Cassidy, and Dan Ragusa to discuss how these resources embody Reformed Forum's vision for accessible, Christ-centered theological education. This series begins with two volumes—Jim Cassidy's The Book of Job: Suffering unto Glory and Dan Ragusa's Exploring 2 Peter: The Promise and the Path—each drawn from Reformed Academy courses. Designed for adult Sunday schools and small groups, these studies help readers encounter Christ in every book of Scripture. Rooted in the conviction that all Scripture testifies to the sufferings and glories of Christ, these studies move beyond mere grammatical-historical observation to unfold the redemptive unity of God's Word. Dr. James Cassidy speaks at the Reformed Forum Annual Theology Conference, held at Lakeland Church in Gurnee, Illinois on September 27, 2025. The lecture, titled "The Seed of Abraham, Christ in the patriarchs and the promise" by Dr. James Cassidy, addresses the common theological perception that New Testament authors, particularly the Apostle Paul in Galatians 3, give a "surprise ending" to the Old Testament, seemingly reading it against its original intent. Dr. Cassidy argues against this view by showing that the Abrahamic Covenant is fundamentally a covenant of grace, centered on Christ as the singular "offspring" of promise. He explains that the promise is both individual (Christ himself) and collective (all those redeemed through him from every nation), a subtlety Paul rightly handles without misinterpreting Genesis. Crucially, the address highlights that the subsequent giving of the Mosaic Law 430 years later did not and could not annul the original promise of justification by faith, thereby maintaining the primacy and immutability of God's covenant of grace. Chapter Markers 00:00 - Introduction 00:23 - Greetings and Reading of Galatians 3:15–20 02:20 - The "Surprise Ending" View of the New Testament Reading the Old Testament 04:13 - Three Parts of the Address: Paul's Theology, Eschatology, and Primacy of the New Testament Reading 04:35 - Part 1: Paul's Theology of Abraham's Offspring (Galatians 3) 05:25 - Argument from the Lesser to the Greater: Human vs. Divine Covenants 07:13 - Paul's Interpretation: Offspring is Singular (Christ) and not Plural (Ethnic Israel) 08:24 - The Grammatical Ambiguity of "Offspring" (Collective and Individual) 11:12 - The Individual and Collective Scope of the Offspring (Christ and the Church) 11:35 - The Law's Function: It Did Not Annul the Promise to Abraham 13:30 - The True Seed of Abraham is Christ and Those In Him 14:13 - Part 2: The Eschatology of Abraham's Promise 15:35 - The Delay in Fulfillment: Hope Against Hope (Romans 4) 18:24 - Abraham as the Archetypal Believer and the Nature of Saving Faith 20:18 - The Promised Land and the City Whose Builder is God (Heavenly Fulfillment) 22:15 - Christ is the Mediator of the Abrahamic Covenant 23:43 - The Abrahamic Covenant's Fulfillment in the New Covenant 25:27 - **Part 3:** The Primacy of the New Testament's Reading of the Old 26:40 - Reading the Old Testament Through the Lens of Christ 28:13 - The New Testament is the Proper Hermeneutical Key to the Old 30:17 - Application: Gospel Living and World Missions 32:00 - Conclusion and The Blessings to All Nations 35:55 - Final Exhortation

Jim Cassidy | The Church's Mission Is Teaching

Dr. James Cassidy considered Matthew 28:20a, “teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you,” at the Reformed Forum Annual Theology Conference held on September 28, 2024 at Hope OPC in Grayslake, Illinois. Dr. Cassidy offers a comprehensive exploration of the central role of preaching and teaching in the mission of the church. Rooted in the Great Commission, Dr. Cassidy emphasizes that the work of the church is inseparable from the task of proclaiming and teaching the Word of God. He challenges the common distinction between preaching and teaching, arguing that both serve the same ultimate purpose: the faithful execution of Christ's command to make disciples. Dr. Cassidy presents a biblical and theological case for viewing preaching and teaching as fundamentally the same activity within the church's mission. He turns to the New Testament to show how the apostles, including Paul and Timothy, understood their ministry as both preaching the gospel and teaching the whole counsel of God. In this way, the church is called to faithfully declare not only the imperatives of Jesus but also the entire redemptive narrative of Scripture from Genesis to Revelation. This address also covers the broader implications of preaching and teaching, emphasizing that these activities must be biblical, systematic, and polemical. Dr. Cassidy encourages pastors and ministers to preach the whole counsel of God, to structure their sermons with theological coherence, and to boldly defend the Christian faith against false religions and worldviews. In conclusion, Dr. Cassidy underscores that preaching and teaching are the church's primary tasks in fulfilling the Great Commission, and any other activities must serve or flow from this central mission. This address is a profound reflection on the core identity of the church and its mandate to proclaim Christ to all nations.

This lesson is part of the course, The Gospel of John: A Study in the Truth (Chapters 1–10), taught by James J. Cassidy. This course is an overview of the Gospel of John. It is geared toward adults and could be used in a Sunday school class or in a Bible study. As an overview, the course will leave most details uncovered. However, its purpose is to give students key themes in John's Gospel (e.g., truth) which will help them in their interpretation of the book as a whole. In addition, the material is intended to be edifying, showing the centrality of Christ in all of Scripture. With this course, students will—by God's grace—be made to grow in the knowledge of who Jesus is and what he came to do. This, in turn, will equip students to share Christ more clearly and effectively with others. Jim Cassidy is the pastor of South Austin Presbyterian Church.
