Get your tackle boxes ready … it's time to go fishing! That's right, in this episode of Coffee to Go, co-hosts Karin Peter and Blake Smith join Jesus near the Sea of Galilee as he calls Simon, Andrew, James and John to follow him, using the skills they already have to participate in his mission. The good news is that you too already have the skills you need to herald the inbreaking of God's peaceable kingdom... no fishing required. What do the Andrews Sisters, an apple tree and today's Coffee to Go have in common? Not much... with the exception of a reference to sitting under a tree. But for today's journey with Jesus sitting under a fig tree if very important. Grab your coffee and join cohosts Karin Peter and Blake Smith as they witness Peter's excitement, Nathaniel's suspicion (at least initially), and Jesus' revelation. John the Baptist and Jesus are important characters, but when the “hovering dove” shows up, you know it's got to be important! In this moment, God shows up in the wilderness … on the shore of the Jordan, but the reality is that God is always present. Join co-hosts Karin Peter and Blake Smith as they journey with Jesus on this important day, and see why it matters! And, don't be afraid of the wilderness. It might just be the place where you meet God. If so, you won't be the first. Today is Epiphany … the day when we celebrate the revelation and acknowledgment that Jesus is the Son of God, and that he has come for all people. The star is shining bright and the “Magi” make their way to Bethlehem to meet Jesus. But it's not good news for everyone. Take King Herod for example... the scripture say he was troubled. Join co-hosts Karin Peter and Blake Smith, to hear why it is good news for us. Then, take time to consider what is the “star” that guides you on your spiritual journey towards Jesus. Faithful action and wisdom take center stage in today's episode of Coffee to Go. Even Jesus takes on a secondary role. Today is all about Anna and Simeon and Mary and Joseph. Hidden behind the words of the passage is the assurance that the sacraments and rituals of faith are accessible to all, and everyone … even old ladies … have something to contribute. Join co-hosts Karin Peter and Blake Smith, for a challenging conversation regarding the requirements and expectations of faith, as well as a few helpful ideas for what “sacrificial offerings” you might be able to share. Merry Christmas to all! Hopefully, you have not just completed a long ride on a donkey to get to wherever you are. If so, we understand if you feel a bit cranky. Who wouldn't? Though our pageants, and carols, and nativities paint a beautiful picture of the birth narrative, chances are that even Mary, the mother of God, was a little out of sorts. Join co-hosts Karin Peter and Blake Smith for a brief look inside and behind the scenes of the birth narrative. See how even though the process of following God can be difficult, God is always there to sustain us. On this third Sunday of Advent, we find ourselves journeying with someone other than Jesus. Instead, we're hanging out with the camel hair-wearing, locust-eating John the Baptist. It seems that Jesus wasn't the only one the religious leaders were willing to interrogate. Join hosts, Karin Peter and Blake Smith as they wander with John … clearly NOT Jesus, but rather the one that points to him. Perhaps we can pick up a few pointers from John as we wait for the true “light” to come. That's right, we're journeying with Jesus and waiting for him to be born. Most everyone wants to belong … to a group or organization or sacred community, but not many folks will admit wanting to belong to someone. It's a good thing, then, that God is not just any some “one.” And, from the day of our conception, and made public in the waters of baptism, we belong to God. It doesn't matter whose head is imprinted on the coins in our pockets. God's image is imprinted on our hearts. When it comes to matters of faith, it's sometimes hard to know whether to stand up or to stay quiet. Today's episode finds hosts Karin Peter and Blake Smith journeying with Jesus in Jerusalem as the religious leaders are questioning Jesus about his authority. And, no surprise, Jesus has a question or two of his own that leaves them speechless. The question is, will we be speechless when we are called on to stand up for our faith and claim without embarrassment that which we say we believe? “That's not fair!” is a common response to today's gospel passage. But, then again, nothing is in the Kingdom of God … thank goodness! If things were “fair” we might get what we actually deserve rather than the grace and unconditional love offered to us freely by God. This week, hosts Karin Peter and Blake Smith take us on a journey with Jesus as he shares the parable of the laborers in the vineyard. This week's journey with Jesus comes with an especially difficult but incredibly important challenge … the mandate to forgive. Too often, when we encounter conflict or disappointment with someone else, we choose to simply move on rather than seek forgiveness and reconciliation … especially when dealing with “repeat offenders.” But as cohost Karin Peter reminds us in this episode of Coffee to Go, it's in those times that we need to “put goodness and mercy out into the world.” After all, God never stops forgiving us. We've got nothing to lose if we at least try to do the same for others.Download TranscriptThanks for listening to Project Zion Podcast!Follow us on Facebook and Instagram!Intro and Outro music used with permission: “For Everyone Born,” Community of Christ Sings #285. Following Jesus can be like a wild roller coaster ride. One minute you're the rock on which Jesus says he'll build his church, and the next minute he's calling you Satan and telling you to get behind him. If that's ever happened to you, you're in good company. Peter knew the words to say, but as hosts Karin Peter and Blake Smith talk about in this episode of Coffee to Go, knowing the right words to say isn't enough. And, taking up one's “cross” isn't just about dealing with your personal issues, it includes standing up for the things that matter to Jesus. Who do you say that I am? Jesus' question to Peter as recorded in the Gospel According to Matthew didn't seem to catch Peter off guard. Peter was quick with his answer. How about you? Who would you say that Jesus is? Would you be ready with a quick answer, or would you need time to think it out? In today's episode of Coffee to Go, hosts Karin Peter and Blake Smith consider why it's important to know the answer to that and to other questions of faith. It's not about being right or wrong. It's about honesty... with yourself and with God. A Rabbi, a Priest and a minister walk into a bar … Now that we have your attention, it was actually, a Syrophoenician who walked up to Jesus and the disciples and started shouting, “Have mercy on me Lord!” The thing is, Jesus didn't respond the way we might expect. Only through the woman's persistence in the face of rejection did Jesus have a change of heart and listen to what she had to say. This week, join hosts Karin Peter and Blake Smith as they look at the more “fully human” side of this fully human/fully divine man we call Jesus. See what can happen when we don't give up easily when seeking what is right. Do you sometimes feel like you are tossed about by the “stormy seas” of life? Why is it that we often wait until times get tough to reach out to God? In this week's gospel passage, Jesus reminds us, through action not words, that self-care and preparation are important in helping navigate the storms of life. We need not wait until we are “sinking” to reach out our hand to God. God is available to us at ll times. Listen in as hosts, Karin Peter and Blake Smith, discuss the message behind the miracle this week. Looking for ideas for children's spiritual formation practices? Go to allthingsarespiritual.org. “Of course we get it, Jesus! Do you sometimes find yourself surrounded by “toxic weeds” in your life … people whom you'd rather not be around for one reason or another? Have you ever wondered if you are the toxic “weed” in someone else's “field?” In this episode of Coffee to Go, hosts Karin Peter and Blake Smith take a look at another parable in which Jesus suggests that, in the Kingdom of God, it's better to let the weeds grow rather than pluck them out. After all, the “plucking” is God's responsibility, not ours. Our responsibility is to be a nutrient for the field rather than a toxin. Are you the seed, or are you the soil? If you're the soil, you may find that some days you are more like rocky ground than fertile soil. When was the last time you welcomed a stranger? Back in the “day,” houses had front porches, or stoops, and privacy fences were almost unheard of … at least in most neighborhoods. Now, we live in a time where back decks and privacy fences have become the norm. Welcoming the stranger may not be easy, but it is our calling and responsibility. Join hosts, Karin Peter and Blake Smith, as they walk with Jesus and the disciples in Matthew 10:40-42. and lift up the importance of hospitality in a seemingly unhospitable world. Nobody said it would be easy. Certainly not Jesus! If you're looking for an easy ride, it could be that discipleship is not for you. A short passage for a deeply complex concept … the Trinity. Rather than getting bogged down in conversation about Trinity in this episode of Coffee to Go, however, hosts Karin Peter and Blake Smith focus in on the “sending” aspect of the scripture text. God sends Son, Son sends Spirit. Spirit sends the Church (a.k.a. the people... us). There's no getting around it. No matter how you understand the Trinity... no matter how you refer to the Trinity … the bottom line is the same. As a disciple, you are being sent. It's up to you to discern how and for what purpose. The blessing for this episode was taken from: Malcolm Guite's “A Sonnet for Trinity Sunday.” The full text of the sonnet can be found at: https://malcolmguite.wordpress.com/2021/05/29/. Yes, we're still in the season of Easter. But, it's getting close to time for Jesus' departure, and he is on an errand of hospitality. The disciples are concerned. How will they find their way to the divine dwelling place of which Jesus speaks? Jesus has not only shown the disciples “the way,” he has proclaimed that he is, in fact, The Way. But, what exactly does that mean? Fences are meant to keep things out … to protect what is inside. Gates, on the other hand, are meant to provide a passage through... both in and out. On this, the third Sunday of Easter, hosts Karin Peter and Blake Smith travel with Jesus and a couple of disciples on a road of discovery, hospitality and relationship. “Anticipation, it's making me wait.” These are not just the words to the refrain of a Carly Simon song or a ‘70s ketchup commercial.
