In the second beatitude in Matthew 5:4, Jesus connects poverty of spirit with mourning. He pairs knowledge of our empty-handedness with grief over it. In doing so, He teaches us that it matters how we respond to the knowledge of our spiritual bankruptcy. It matters that we don't just “get” that we're sinners—but we also feel the weight of our sin. And the amazing promise is that when we do, we will be comforted. If you want to dig deeper into the themes in this episode, here are a few passages and reflection questions to consider.Consider your theological or church background. Was mourning over sin emphasized? Was God's comfort equally emphasized? Reflect on your personal experience with mourning over sin. Read James 4:1-10. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you where you may be living in friendship with the world right now. How can you put this passage into practice this week?Read Romans 5:1-5. How does the Holy Spirit pour out God's love into our hearts? What reassurance does He give us, even though we sin?Consider John 11:35 and John 11:38. How does Jesus demonstrate mourning over sin, even though it is not His own? What do you learn from His response to sin?
Jesus Christ is rich in compassion toward his people who suffer grief and sorrow. And he binds up our wounds.
When your heart breaks, it feels like time stands still. Your breath catches. Your world shifts. You try to function, but the pain keeps whispering that nothing will ever be the same again. Whether it's the loss of someone you love, a dream that collapsed, a betrayal, or an unexpected blow—you're not alone in that space. God sees it. And He moves toward the brokenhearted. Our springboard for today's discussion is:“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 (ESV)God isn't afraid of your heartbreak. He doesn't pull back from your tears, your questions, or even your anger. He steps into it. Psalm 34 doesn't say He tolerates the brokenhearted. It says He's near them. And not just nearby in theory—but close in presence, in comfort, and in rescue.Hope doesn't mean pretending the pain isn't there. Hope means acknowledging the pain, and still believing there's something on the other side of it. It means trusting that God is writing a greater story, even if all you can see is the torn page in front of you.The world says, “Get over it.” But God says, “Come to Me with it.” He doesn't rush your healing. He walks with you through it.Hope for the brokenhearted doesn't come from quick fixes. It comes from quiet presence. From the Word of God gently restoring what has been torn. From worship in the middle of weeping. From other believers who hold up your arms when you can't lift your own.And when you feel like you're barely holding on, remember: God isn't asking you to hold it all together. He's holding you.You may be broken, but you are not beyond repair. In God's hands, even shattered hearts can shine again.Question of the Day:What's one step you can take today to move toward hope—no matter how small?Mini Call to Action:Write the words of Psalm 34:18 on paper and place it somewhere visible. Let God's nearness be the truth you lean on this week.Let's Pray:Father, I bring You the pieces of my heart. I don't know how to put them back together—but I trust that You do. Draw near. Heal what's broken. And fill me again with hope. In Jesus' name, amen.Let's Get To Work!Hope doesn't deny the pain—it declares that God's not done yet.My Reasons To Believe is a reader-supported publication. Lisa's world changed forever the day her husband suddenly passed away—leaving her not only as a widow, but as the “only parent” to their young children. The grief was overwhelming, and her identity—so long intertwined with her husband—felt lost in the chaos. With raw honesty and gentle humor, Lisa recounts her journey through loss, moving from shock and survival to healing and new beginnings. She opens up about the awkward conversations, the unexpected kindness of neighbors, and the deep reshaping of faith required to move forward. Along the way, Lisa found purpose—starting a ministry for widows, creating resources to help others navigate grief, and encouraging those in seasons of suffering. Feeling discouraged? Needing to be reminded of God's promises for you? Join us in today's study in a super-encouraging psalm that is sure to bless your time in God's Word. DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. What did the podcast mean when it said that this psalm, and others like it are part of a class of genre called “Gnomic Literature”? How do we handle this kind of literature and these kinds of promises? Why do we tend to let “exceptions” cause us to lose faith in God's universal principles? 2. The opening lines of this psalm say something along the lines of: "A psalm of David when he feigned madness before Abimelech, who drove him away and he departed." What did the podcast explain about the inspiration behind these statements regarding the background and setting of certain psalms? 3. Looking at verse 1, when does David declare that he will bless the Lord? What guidance does this give us about the frequency of how often we praise the Lord? Are there any changes that you need to make in order to be a person who “blesses the Lord at all time” and “whose praises are continually in your mouth?” 4. In verse 3, what does David call us to join with him in doing? How might you fulfill this exhortation in your life today? 5. Verses 4, 6 and 7 all give reasons for David to praise God and magnify Him. What are they? Why should these things cause us to praise the Lord more? 6. The podcast paused to focus on the Angel of the Lord that is mentioned in verse 7. Who is He and what does He do? 7. What attribute of God are we to see in verses 8 & 9? What should this cause us to do? When you face adversity, is this something you do easily or struggle with? Why? 8. Verses 13 & 14 show us the path of life that puts a person in position to receive these promises. What does this path look like? Are you on that kind of path? 9. Who is the Lord listening to in verse 15? How would this kind of person be living if they were in your life situation? 10. In verses 17 to 19, what do we learn about God's watchful care over the brokenhearted and afflicted? 11. Glance over verses 6, 15, 17, 18 and 20. What does the Lord do for His people in these verses? As you live your day in light of these promises, how can you be the kind of person that receives this watchful care of God? Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! With soulful storytelling and a powerful personal reflection from her recent Resilient Hearts workshop, Kc challenges modern female leaders to explore whether comfort is actually cloaking complacency. Walk away with two potent journaling prompts and a renewed sense of purpose as Kc reminds you that your presence, your choices, and your courage are shaping your legacy right now—not someday in the distant future.

Susanne's world fell apart piece by piece—her marriage ended, her health declined, her family home was lost, and as she mourned her father's passing, she also became her mother's caretaker. Just as Susanne thought she had found hope again, another deep loss left her shattered and without direction. Through this cascade of heartbreak, Susanne discovered that the well-meaning words and advice society gives us about grief often leave us even more isolated and confused. In this episode of The Mom Next Door: Stories of Faith, Susanne Murphy joins Pam Fields to share her raw and honest journey through extraordinary loss and the profound lessons God revealed in the midst of her pain. Susanne not only tells her story but offers practical, biblically grounded tools to help us walk alongside others in their sorrow. She exposes the myths our culture perpetuates about grief and invites listeners to approach heartache with compassion and listening ears. You'll hear Susanne's heartfelt encouragement for the brokenhearted and learn how even life's “good” changes—like a child moving away to college or a big family move—can trigger grief that needs to be acknowledged. Drawing from her work as a grief recovery specialist, Susanne brings hope, healing, and a new perspective on how to hold space for our children and friends as they process loss, both big and small. If you or someone you love is facing grief, this conversation will equip you to respond with empathy, listen without judgment, and recognize God's redemptive work in the midst of suffering. Susanne reminds us that our stories are not over—hope, healing, and God's loving presence are waiting as we step forward in faith.Listen in for practical tips, biblical encouragement, and the gentle reminder that you are never alone in your heartbreak.Check in with Susanne at Whole Heart Coaching or on Instagram @Susanne_MurphyYou can also connect with Pam and Friends on the Facebook group, Tending Fields Mom's Group and on Instagram@TendingFieldsThe book mentioned in this episode wasThe Grief Recovery Handbook by John W. Everyone asks at some time, if God created everything who created God? These are fundamental questions that often get asked by children when they are young. Dr. Ross explains using the space time continuum to demonstrate that God, the triune Creator, must transcend the created universe.

Modern radios are very selective. They pick up one station at a time. So as you listen to A NEW BEGINNING, you’re not hearing the latest hit on the Polka Parade, or pork belly prices from the farm report. Today, Pastor Greg Laurie points out we need to be just as selective with our hearing. It’s all too easy to let the voices of our culture plant ideas and values in our heads. But today, we’ll see two brokenhearted individuals who were tuned in to Jesus. A miracle is defined as “a surprising and welcome event that is not explainable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore considered to be the work of a divine agency.” Essentially, something awesome, God did it. So many of us have needed a miracle at times . . . maybe you need one right now. Well today on A NEW BEGINNING, Pastor Greg Laurie talks about these kind of supernatural events, and what part our faith plays in the story. Good encouragement is coming.
