In this episode of Art of the Kickstart, we spoke with Erin Holloway, President of FundAmerica by Prime Trust. In 2012, FundAmerica became the crowdfunding arm of Prime Trust and currently acts as the technology and finance handler behind companies like StartEngine and Republic. Prime Trust was founded in 2016 and supports the largest fintech brands. Listen to learn about the meteoric rise of equity crowdfunding and the current trends pushing the industry forward. Short on time? Here's what we talked about. Equity crowdfunding is a booming industry and will continue to grow. Although the concept might not be familiar to everyone, the idea of crowdfunding is much more mainstream than we realize. Platforms such as Shark Tank and GoFundMe have crowdfunding topics and accessibility more mainstream. Holloway predicts Prime Trust and FundAmerica will continue to grow because of the normalization of trading securities and the increased usage of crowdfunding in the younger generation. Holloway offers key questions investors should be asking before engaging in an investment opportunity while considering economic and external factors that can shape an entrepreneur's business and financial plan. Today’s guest is Peter Kirby, CEO of Kuvera. Peter and his co-founder Mahesh Paolini-Subramanya were first involved with the Factom project, before they stepped away to pursue Kuvera. They did this because they saw an interesting opportunity to move real-world assets on to the blockchain. Peter explains how Kuvera will be useful in solving real-world problems like the process of getting a mortgage and buying property. We learn that selling mortgages is even more complicated because of the data that is attached to them. Peter says that blockchain can simplify these systems by allowing all parties to look at the same, untampered mortgage data. He explains the status of Kuvera today and what the future holds for Kuvera. As Peter and his team move forward, he shares some of his insights into gathering additional educational information about the industry. Topics covered: - Success with Factom and starting Kuvera. - Moving the mortgage market into the 21st century with Kuvera. - The archaic use of a large amount of paper when getting a mortgage. - The current process of selling a mortgage and data verification. - The stage that Kuvera is in and transferring mortgages to the blockchain. - Working with institutions and demonstrating value. Bloomberg Opinion columnist Barry Ritholtz interviews Paul Vigna, a Wall Street Journal reporter who covers the cryptocurrency sector. His most recent book, co-authored with Michael J. Casey, is "The Truth Machine: The Blockchain and the Future of Everything." On this week's Innovation Engine, we're pleased to welcome Alex Tapscott back to talk about unlocking the blockchain. Among the topics we'll discuss are how far blockchain technology has come in just a few short years, what your company may be able to learn about organizing teams from a company called Consensus, and why blockchain may represent the “Internet of value.” Alex last joined the podcast about two years ago, when the book he co-wrote with his father Don had just been published (Blockchain Revolution: How the Technology Behind Bitcoin is Changing Money, Business, and the World). Alex and his father Don also co-founded The Blockchain Research Institute and, in 2014, Alex wrote the seminal report on governing digital currencies for the Global Solutions Network program at the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. We planned to be off for the holidays, but we couldn't resist. Too much excitement this week. Enjoy. We are witnessing one of the largest price declines in the history of Bitcoin, but worry not, 2018 is just around the corner and this technology is just getting started. Josh and Mike discuss why Coinbase sucks, fees to move Bitcoin are not a big deal, and learn that 18 year olds are in love with Bitcoin. Also, Mike shares his ideas on the future of autonomous vehicles and real estate in a digital tokenized world. A lot of good stuff this week. Happy Holidays! Buck is joined by best-selling author and satirist P.J. O’Rourke to discuss what’s next for the Trump administration if the stalled Senate health care bill fails…and why the Russia investigation is most likely headed down the “Whitewater rabbit hole.” Paul Vigna of the Wall Street Journal and author of The Age of Cryptocurrency: How Bitcoin and the Blockchain Are Challenging the Global Economic Order tells Buck and P.J. about the one company that could make bitcoin mainstream overnight.
While bitcoin and blockchain may sound like something from science fiction, they have become powerful tools to help us rethink banking and finance. What began as a cypherpunk vision has become a viable model of currency and exchange for everyone with access to a Smartphone, from the unbanked in Afghanistan to the urban hipster in New York City. Eager to learn more about where bitcoin and blockchain technology has come from and where it is headed, co-authors Michael J. Casey and Paul Vigna researched and wrote the bestselling book, The Age of Cryptocurrency: How Bitcoin and the Blockchain are Challenging the Global Economic Order. In this interview, Michael J. Casey, Senior Advisor to the Digital Currency Initiative at the Media Lab at MIT and former global finance columnist for The Wall Street Journal, shares what they learned and why we should care. In this episode, we talk about: Connections to science fiction, cryptography, and cypherpunks The blockchain and bitcoin origin story What it means to decentralize the banking system The mystery of Satoshi Nakamoto Trust and the huge role it plays in launching a new currency How it all started when someone bought a pizza What bitcoin and blockchain mean for us as customers and as business owners How blockchain and bitcoin can upend industries from medicine to music What this tech means for the poor and unbanked How mobile tech, bitcoin, and blockchain are empowering millions Ways Wall Street is already co-opting ledger tech for its own purposes How this tech will govern the economy of the future Selected Links to Topics Mentioned @mikejcasey http://www.michaeljcasey.com/ Satoshi Nakamoto Cypherpunk Cryptography Michel Foucault Hyperinflation Deflation Casa de cambio Laszlo Ripple Ethereum MIT Internet of Things Micropayment www.dougrushkoff.com Oliver Luckett The Audience If you enjoy the podcast, please rate and review it on iTunes. In our seventy-fifth episode of the Steptoe Cyberlaw Podcast, Stewart Baker, Alan Cohn, Meredith Rathbone, Michael Vatis, and Jason Weinstein discuss: federal law enforcements’ issues with unbreakable encryption; Hacking Team was itself hacked; and the right to be forgotten still on the offensive. In our second half we have an interview with Michael Casey, former senior columnist for the Wall Street Journal and – as of last week – senior advisor at the MIT Media Lab’s Digital Currency Initiative. Michael is also the author, along with his former Wall Street Journal colleague Paul Vigna, of The Age of Cryptocurrency: How Bitcoin and Digital Money Are Challenging the Global Economic Order. The views expressed in this podcast are those of the speakers and do not reflect the opinions of the firm.
Bitcoin has not been easy for Wall Street and other traditional financial centers to wrap their collective heads around, let alone take seriously. But that has changed recently, argue authors Michael Casey and Paul Vigna in their book The Age of Cryptocurrency -- How Bitcoin and Digital Currency are Challenging the Global Economic Order. The two Wall Street Journal writers join the a16z Podcast to talk about how far bitcoin has seeped into the Wall Street worldview, and more broadly, into the fabric of the global economy. Casey and Vigna describe the five "stages" of bitcoin conversion from disdain to obsession, and why, with the failings of our financial system still painfully fresh, the bitcoin blockchain could be a tool to help rebuild trust, governance, and faith in the power of currency post-recession.
