A few months ago, on an atlas bash in the Free State, I met Cameron Blair. After some great evening conversations about birding, and especially his love for cisticolas, I knew I had to get him onto the podcast. We sat down last week to record what was meant to be one episode, but it quickly turned into two. So this is the start of a special two-part conversation with a fascinating ornithological student. We unpack how a project he started at just 12 years old, along with where he grew up, shaped his journey into birding. He shares his passion for honeyguides and cisticolas, along with plenty of other great insights. There is also a lot of practical advice here, especially if you want to get better at identifying cisticolas. There were a few recording challenges on Cameron's side, which you may hear in parts of the audio, but don't let that distract you. This is a conversation you don't want to miss.Visit our online store to get your birding related merchandise at great prices https://www.thebirdinglife.com/online-storeIntro and outro music by Tony ZA https://soundcloud.com/tonyofficialza

“Send Coach John a message”I found a post that got me thinking about how much I need to find this. I'm talking about finding a “quiet mind.” It comes from Curious Minds (@CuriousMindsHub) where this post was shared: “A quiet mind … A quiet mind learns better. A quiet mind observes better. A quiet mind acts better.” Yep… I need a quiet mind more often. I need MY mind to be quiet more often. I think back to my past, when I was a little kid at times. I knew my mind was quieter at that time because of the things going around me that my mind was trying to deal with and think about. Today - I feel that it's multiplied many times more than that. It gets me thinking (and planning) about finding ways to slow my mind down - especially at night while I'm trying to sleep. I want to keep looking for ways to simplify my life and mind for that matter. Be more in the moment when I can remember to do that. I want to make my habits and choices fit into this a bit more. How about you? Thanks for listening. What does it look like to be a musician who is also an inventor—someone whose curiosity about how things work shapes the way he approaches his instrument? Pianist Josef Hofmann spent his entire career exploring that, and his story is worth knowing. This year marks the 150th anniversary of Hofmann's birth. He was a Polish-American pianist, born in 1876, and considered by many—including Sergei Rachmaninoff—to be the greatest pianist of the 20th century. And yet, despite his many musical achievements, including a fifty-year performing career, 100 compositions, commercial recordings, a signature tone, and enviable technical precision, he doesn't have the same name recognition as his contemporaries. What do we know about him? What set him apart? And what can we learn from him as musicians and teachers today, over a century later? In this episode, I'm sharing some of my research into Hofmann's life, career, and contributions to our field. For show notes + a full transcript, click here.Resources Mentioned*Disclosure: Some of the links in this episode are affiliate links, which means if you decide to purchase through any of them, I will earn a small commission. Somewhere between childhood and adulthood, most of us quietly stopped asking questions. Responsibilities filled the spaces where wonder used to live, and without even noticing, we traded curiosity for routine — including in our faith. We read the same passages, pray the same prayers, and somewhere along the way, the thrill of discovering who God is begins to feel like a distant memory. But what if God never meant for that sense of wonder to fade? Proverbs 2 paints a vivid picture of someone who seeks understanding the way a treasure hunter pursues hidden riches — actively, hungrily, refusing to settle for the surface. That is the posture God invites us into, not just as new believers, but for the entirety of our lives with Him. He is not threatened by our questions or put off by our desire to understand more. He is a God of infinite wisdom, which means there is always something new to discover about who He is and how He works. A curious mind doesn't weaken faith — it deepens it. When we open Scripture asking the Holy Spirit to show us something fresh, when we pay attention to the evidence of God's creativity woven into the ordinary moments of our day, we find that seeking Him is not just a discipline. It is a delight. Today's Bible Verse "Indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God." — Proverbs 2:3-5, NIV Ponder Today Curiosity is not a childish trait to outgrow — it is a God-given gift that draws us deeper into knowing Him, and He invites us to cultivate it throughout our entire lives. God is not threatened by our questions; He is actually the one who extended the invitation to seek, search, and discover — and He promises that those who seek Him will find Him. Seeking God with a curious mind is an active choice, not a passive one — it means opening Scripture, paying attention to creation, and asking the Holy Spirit to teach us something new each day. Today's Prayer Dear God, I want to know You more. I confess that I sometimes settle into routine and stop seeking You with the curiosity and wonder You deserve. Give me a curious mind that is eager to learn and a heart that longs for Your wisdom. Teach me through Your Word, through creation, and through every experience of my daily life. Help me search for understanding the way a treasure hunter searches for hidden riches — actively, hungrily, and with great expectation. I trust that as I seek You, You will reveal more of who You are. Thank You, God. Amen. Enjoy Today's Prayer? If this episode encouraged you, we'd love to stay connected! In Part 2 of my conversation with Stacy M., we continue pulling back the curtain on Freemasonry and examining the questions most people are told not to ask.If the organization is simply a harmless fraternity, why so much secrecy? Why the elaborate rituals, layered symbolism, and strict oaths? And why have so many influential leaders throughout history been tied to it?In this episode, we dig deeper into the structure of Freemasonry, the meaning behind its rituals and symbols, and the concerns many Christians and researchers have raised about its spiritual and cultural influence. We also discuss why criticism of the organization is often quickly dismissed—and why that reaction alone should make people more curious, not less. This conversation isn't about sensationalism. It's about discernment. When powerful institutions operate largely out of public view yet intersect with leadership, culture, and faith, they deserve thoughtful examination. The goal isn't to tell people what to think, but to encourage them to start asking questions for themselves.--https://www.youversion.com/bible-app
Today on Uncommon Sense, I'm joined by Stacy M. for a conversation that too many people are afraid (or unwilling) to have. We're discussing Freemasonry: what it is, what it claims to be, and the darker, more sinister elements that often get brushed aside or ignored entirely. From secrecy and symbolism to influence and power, we're asking the questions that rarely get real answers. Why has this secret society maintained such a strong presence for so long? Why does it seem to intersect so frequently with positions of power—including within our own government? And most importantly… why aren't more people talking about it?This episode isn't about blind accusations, it's about awareness. If something holds influence, operates behind closed doors, and shapes culture or leadership in any capacity, it deserves scrutiny. It's time to start paying attention and asking better questions.--https://www.youversion.com/bible-app

Many individuals grappling with anxiety often question the intensity of their feelings, the depth of their thoughts, and their heightened awareness of minor shifts in situations. Today, I aim to provide a comforting perspective: anxiety can arise from the natural interplay between one's personality traits and external stressors, rather than being seen as a personal shortcoming. We begin our exploration with Neuroticism, a trait characterized by emotional sensitivity, which correlates strongly with anxiety. Those high in this trait are quick to recognize potential threats and often feel emotions more deeply. While this heightened sensitivity can lead to increased worry and rumination, it also brings valuable strengths such as empathy and intuition. My key message for anxious listeners is that learning to soothe a sensitive nervous system is more beneficial than attempting to completely change one's innate responses. Understanding this aspect of ourselves can foster a sense of empowerment rather than defeat.Moving into Conscientiousness, we examine the traits of being organized, responsible, and goal-oriented. While these qualities can provide structure and stability, they may also lead to perfectionism and an internalized pressure to perform flawlessly. I encourage those who resonate with this trait to cultivate self-compassion, recognizing that it's okay to make mistakes and that human fallibility is part of the journey.#AnxietyCoachesPodcast #BigFive #OCEANModel #MentalHealthAwareness #NervousSystem #PersonalityTraits #GinaRyan #AnxietyRelief #SelfCompassion #Neuroticism #Conscientiousness #IntrovertProblems #HighlySensitivePerson #PsychologyTips #Mindfulness #EmotionalWellbeing #StressManagement #HolisticHealth #InnerPeace #SelfUnderstanding #EmotionalSensitivity #MentalHealthMatters #OvercomingAnxiety #PersonalityPsychology #HSP #Empathy #SelfGrowth #NervousSystemRegulation #CarlJung #EmotionalIntelligence #MindBodyConnection #CalmYourMind #InnerHarmony #PersonalDevelopment #Overthinking #AnxietySupport #ACPSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
“You would not want to be me.” — Elon MuskYesterday I argued that Dario Amodei is the most interesting man in America because he's doing something nobody else has the balls to do: acting like a human being in public. Elon Musk is the opposite. He has the balls — nobody would deny that — but what's missing is the human-being. Or perhaps Elon is all-too-human, which explains why so many of us — including myself — loathe him.Charles Steel, a London investor, doesn't loathe Elon. In fact, he's self-published a book about him: The Curious Mind of Elon Musk: Nine Ways He Thinks Differently. Rather than an Elon hagiography, Steel insists, it's an attempt to explain why Musk admirers don't fully understand him, and the Hate-Elon crowd would probably loathe him for different reasons even if they had full navigation rights to his mind.As I said, I'm in the second camp. My dislike of Musk is political — the cosying up to Trump, the DOGE fiasco, the embrace of far-right groups, the transformation of Twitter into a safe space for misanthropes. But Steel makes a case that, in our therapeutic culture, might be harder for some to dismiss: Musk's “curious mind” is the product of childhood bullying, high-functioning autism, an abusive father, and an existential crisis resolved not by philosophy but by The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Apparently Elon read Nietzsche and that, of course, only compounded his existential crisis. Probably because Nietzsche was warning us about a future dominated by philistines like Elon Musk.In navigating the Musk mind, Steel discovers three traits: hyper-rationality, existential angst, and belligerence. Lots of Silicon Valley founders have the first. Some have the second. Almost none have the third. The combination produces a man who genuinely believes that the scientific method — the right of anyone to criticize anything — is a secular religion, and that “wokeness” is a competing religion that must be destroyed. Whether or not you buy this self-serving argument, Steel might be right to stress a Musk worldview — even if that worldview is often childishly indefensible.I suggested to Steel that Musk is trapped in a Hobbesian state of nature — frozen alone, unable to read other people, incapable of separating himself from himself. A kind of naturally narcissistic state. This is what I most dislike about Elon. That he's normalizing this state of nature. Nietzsche might (like his contemporary disciple Peter Thiel) have called him the Anti-Christ. He's certainly the anti-Dario. Five Takeaways• Musk Is the Anti-Dario: Amodei acts like a human being in public. Musk has the balls but what's missing is the human-being. Or perhaps he's all-too-human, which explains why so many of us loathe him. The contrast between them is the story of Silicon Valley in 2026.• Steel's Case Is Harder to Dismiss Than You'd Think: Musk's “curious mind” is the product of childhood bullying, high-functioning autism, an abusive father, and an existential crisis resolved not by philosophy but by The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He read Nietzsche and it made things worse. Probably because Nietzsche was warning us about philistines like Musk.• Three Traits: Hyper-Rationality, Angst, and Belligerence: Lots of Silicon Valley founders have the first. Some have the second. Almost none have the third. The combination produces a man who believes the scientific method is a secular religion and wokeness is a competing one that must be destroyed. Whether or not you buy this self-serving argument, Steel might be right to stress a Musk worldview — even if it's often childishly indefensible.• Trapped in a Hobbesian State of Nature: Musk is frozen alone, unable to read other people, incapable of separating himself from himself. A kind of naturally narcissistic state. What's most dangerous about Elon is that he's normalising this state of nature for the rest of us.• The Anti-Christ and the Anti-Dario: Nietzsche might, like his contemporary disciple Peter Thiel, have called Musk the Anti-Christ. He's certainly the anti-Dario. The contrast between Amodei and Musk is the story of Silicon Valley — and perhaps America — in 2026. About the GuestCharles Steel is a London-based investor and writer. He has worked with Tony Blair and Save the Children. His book The Curious Mind of Elon Musk: Nine Ways He Thinks Differently is self-published and out now. His next project is on Albert Camus.References:• The Curious Mind of Elon Musk: Nine Ways He Thinks Differently by Charles Steel — the book under discussion.• Episode 2835: Why Dario Amodei Might Be the 21st Century's First Real Leader — yesterday's TWTW, the direct counterpoint.• Zero to One by Peter Thiel — referenced by Steel on Asperger-like traits and Silicon Valley success.• The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams — the book Musk credits with resolving his existential crisis.• The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus — Steel's next project, and the question he'd most like to discuss with Musk.About Keen On AmericaNobody asks more awkward questions than the Anglo-American writer and filmmaker Andrew Keen. Charles Steele reflects on "more than two decades in private equity, banking," combined with "public service roles, including advising Tony Blair," and how these experiences led him to a late but powerful discovery: "the best way to really find purpose in life is to be creative, to make stuff." He explains that "the things I'm writing about now I am only able to write about because of what I spent the last two decades doing," and how this realization became a turning point. He describes how stepping outside traditional career paths creates "periods where you have perspective," and how "follow your curiosity" eventually brought him back to the ideas that mattered in his youth. He shares that "in the last five years, I feel like I've become a student again" and that this shift awakened a deeper understanding of work, mission, and meaning. Charles discusses the discipline behind creative work: "writing is not writing. Writing is rewriting," and how the creative act is "one of making mistakes, learning from them, getting better." He also explains the importance of reframing difficulty, saying, "if it was an easy thing to do, then everyone would do it," and why maintaining "a sense of humor" matters when navigating the inevitable "peaks and troughs." Turning to Elon Musk, Charles argues that Musk is "far more different than most people would imagine." He explains that Musk always says, "when I talk you don't need to read between the lines, just read the lines," and that understanding him requires stepping outside our assumptions: "you have to step out of your shoes and step into his shoes." Charles outlines Musk's worldview, guided by what Musk calls "a philosophy of curiosity." Musk believes "the universe is the answer," and that progress comes from learning to "ask better questions" so we can "increase our consciousness" as a civilization. Charles describes how Musk's companies, from Tesla to SpaceX to XAI, are designed as "civilizationally positive" efforts to "increase the scope and scale of consciousness." He explains Musk's use of first-principles thinking: "you need every time to go back to look at your assumptions," then "make a conjecture" and "try and prove that your theory is wrong." This mindset also shapes how Musk builds organizations: through mission, product obsession, and "the rate of innovation," a culture in which people "work extremely hard" because they believe deeply in the purpose. Charles closes by stressing the importance of alignment and risk-taking: that leaders must understand "your risk tolerance," think in "a range of different outcomes," and recognize that this discipline "really helps you to think about how much risk you're willing to take on for what return." Charles Steel spent two decades at top-tier firms like Goldman Sachs, The Carlyle Group, and Ares Management, working closely with management teams to build companies and deploy capital at scale. He later advised Tony Blair in Jerusalem, chaired Save the Children UK, and most recently authored The Curious Mind of Elon Musk: Nine Ways He Thinks Differently, where he dissects how the world's most driven entrepreneur approaches risk, purpose, and problem-solving. Across finance, policy, and philanthropy, Charles brings a rare, multi-angle perspective on how big money and big ideas actually get made. On this episode we talk about: How a hectic teenage restaurant job taught Charles camaraderie, stoicism, and the confidence that “we'll figure it out and get paid by the end of the day.” The path from a middle-class upbringing and studying history at Cambridge to landing at Goldman Sachs and learning what true excellence looks like. Why he wishes he'd fed his curiosity more at university—and how he's become a student again later in life. The workload and culture at elite investment banks in the late '90s, and the tradeoffs of chasing excellence at 80–100 hour weeks. How curiosity pulled him from private equity into advising Tony Blair in the Middle East and chairing Save the Children UK. Why Elon Musk is so hard to categorize and the three “ingredients” Charles believes truly explain him: existential anxiety, hyper-rational engineering, and unusual creativity. How Musk reframes risk, probability, and failure—and what regular entrepreneurs can learn from that mindset. Why embracing your “strangeness,” feeding your curiosity, and doing intricate, carefully made work can be a powerful (and profitable) life strategy. Top 3 Takeaways Curiosity is not just about asking questions; it's about caring enough to explore deeply, cross disciplines, and stick with difficult, intricate work long enough to make something truly valuable. Elon Musk's advantage isn't just IQ or work ethic—it's the way he reframes risk, failure, and the future as a range of possible outcomes he can influence by backing himself and acting boldly. You don't need to copy Musk to benefit from his thinking; you can apply the same principles by betting on yourself, embracing hard problems, and leaning into what makes you different instead of trying to be “normal.” Notable Quotes “At Goldman Sachs, I learned what excellence really was.” “I wanted to understand what really drove him—what drives the most driven person in the world.” “Don't worry so much about being normal. Embrace your differentness.” Connect with Charles Steel: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/charles-steel-3804397b/ Twitter/X: https://x.com/crasteel Other: Website – https://charlessteel.com (links to his book The Curious Mind of Elon Musk: Nine Ways He Thinks Differently and other work) Learn more about your ad choices. “Send Coach John a message”I found so many powerful posts today and I wanted to share this one with you first. Coming at you a little bit late in the day today, but sometimes “life” gets in the way a bit. So, I'm in the library studio today and getting some stuff done. This comes from Curious Minds (@CuriousMindsHub) where this one hit me right between the eyes and I hope you connect with it too! “It's time to get more aggressive about the life you want.” It is time. Not just because it's late January of a new year, but it's because it's TODAY! Today is the only time I can do something about this because that is the moment I'm in. Truthfully, it would have been really easy to stay at home. The weather is cold and nasty, but I knew I wanted to get back to my “roots” of going someplace outside of the house, getting a coffee and having a quiet space to work in. My local library offers this with their study rooms to sign up for. So many podcasts, school work, video recordings, etc., have been done here. I knew I wanted to take some time to really intentionally focus on getting some things done, investigated, read, watched, etc. So I hope this reminds you to do the same - as soon as you can!! Adam and Dr. Drew kick things off talking about the difference between curious and clueless people before diving into Adam's latest AI experiment — Burt Reynolds as Gavin Newsom tackling the homelessness crisis. Adam compares Newsom's “face of homelessness” spin to saying “the real face of termites is seagulls” and even offers $5,000 to anyone who can find the photo Newsom claims exists. What prevents some of us from acting on our creative ideas while others dive right in? That's the question creativity researcher, Zorana Ivcevic Pringle, set out to answer. It's what she writes about in her book, The Creativity Choice: The Science of Making Decisions to Turn Ideas into Action. Zorana is a senior research scientist at Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. Through her work, she's learned that creativity is a choice, and, when things get hard, we need to employ specific psychological and emotional tools to sustain our efforts. We also need to tap into strong and weak ties for support. If you're looking to unstick your creative capacity, this is the book you'll want to pick up. It's an inspiring read! In this bonus episode of the Mindful Motherhood Podcast, Dr. Katie addresses the emergence of 'bad' words throughout childhood and adolescence and how to turn these awkward moments into teaching opportunities. She explains how children's brains are wired to mimic and explore language, and recommends establishing boundaries around inappropriate language use by establishing specific 'safe zones' at home (e.g., the bathroom), for language exploration without social consequence. This strategy provides children an outlet for their curiosity, emphasizes context in language, and helps develop children's communication and impulse control skills in a constructive and mindful manner. The search for life beyond Earth is no longer science fiction—it takes a lot of data, powerful telescopes and a bit of cosmic detective work. And at the center of this search is University of Chicago astrophysicist Jacob Bean. Bean was part of the team that made history by detecting carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of a distant planet using the James Webb Space Telescope—a major step forward in our ability to study exoplanets.Bean uses cutting-edge tools and discoveries that are reshaping how we think about planet habitability, biosignatures and our place in the universe. From potentially habitable exoplanets like K2-18b to false hopes like Gliese 486b, Bean shares why the atmospheres of these faraway worlds might hold the key to one of humanity's oldest questions: Are we alone in the universe?
In this special live-recorded episode of Therapy Works, we explore the often unspoken patterns that shape our families — and ourselves. Whether you're navigating sibling tensions, generational expectations, or a long-standing rupture with a parent, this conversation offers powerful insight into how family systems operate, why we fall into certain roles, and how healing truly begins. Note: As this was recorded live, the audio isn't perfect — but the rawness adds to the realness! You'll hear real-life therapy sessions unfold in real time — including a moving segment on estrangement — revealing just how much our early environments impact our adult relationships, self-worth, and sense of belonging. What we explore in this episode: Why understanding the family system matters more than focusing on one person's behaviour How unresolved trauma can silently pass through generations What happens when a family faces unexpected change The difference between rupture and repair — and why both are inevitable Why communication breaks down, and how to rebuild it with clarity and compassion How to navigate the tension between love, resentment, and loyalty With stories, therapeutic insight, and deeply human moments, this episode is for anyone trying to make sense of where they come from — and how to break free from cycles that no longer serve them. Highlights: 01:57 – How families react to change 03:58 – Parenting under pressure 05:33 – Tools for breaking family patterns 21:31 – Live therapy: Joe's estrangement story 36:17 – How revelations shape identity 43:15 – Compassion vs. resentment: finding the balance 48:32 – Q&A and closing reflections Find out more about Curious Minds Festival: https://www.batharts.co.uk/curious-minds This is a paid advertisement by BetterHelp.
