    Ivy Insights

The CEO Podcasts: CEO Chat Podcast + I AM CEO Podcast Powered by Blue 16 Media & CBNation.co is an exceptional podcast that offers valuable insights and advice for CEOs and entrepreneurs. Hosted by Gresham Harkless, this podcast features interviews with a wide range of CEOs and business leaders who share their stories, experiences, and strategies for success. The best aspect of this podcast is its authenticity. Unlike other podcasts that focus on high-profile CEOs like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, The CEO Podcasts explores the journeys of everyday CEOs who are hustling their way to success. This gives listeners a unique perspective and allows them to connect with these relatable guests on a deeper level.

One of the standout features of The CEO Podcasts is the quality of its guests. Gresham has a knack for finding CEOs with amazing stories and valuable insights to share. Whether you're a solopreneur or a seasoned CEO, you'll find something valuable in each episode. The show not only provides entertaining stories but also practical hacks and nuggets of wisdom that can be applied to your own CEO journey.

Another great aspect of this podcast is its focus on diversity and inclusivity. The show features a variety of founders who did not necessarily go to school for business or marketing, which is refreshing in an industry that often highlights traditional paths to success. This makes the podcast more accessible to those in identity-consuming roles such as teachers, nurses, moms, etc., who may be looking for inspiration or guidance on how to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams.

While there are many positive aspects of The CEO Podcasts, one potential downside is that some episodes may feel short or lack depth. As each episode aims to provide key tips and takeaways in a concise manner, listeners may crave more in-depth discussions on certain topics. However, this format does make it easy to binge-listen to the podcast and consume multiple episodes in one sitting.

In conclusion, The CEO Podcasts: CEO Chat Podcast + I AM CEO Podcast Powered by Blue 16 Media & CBNation.co is a must-listen for CEOs and entrepreneurs seeking valuable insights and inspiration. With its authentic and relatable storytelling, diverse range of guests, and practical CEO hacks, this podcast provides a wealth of knowledge and guidance for anyone looking to grow their business or enhance their leadership skills. Gresham Harkless is an excellent host who asks incisive questions and creates a supportive community for his listeners. Tune in to The CEO Podcasts and take your CEO journey to the next level.

IAM2659 - Mastering the Art of Fitting in Every Day

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 23, 2025 6:17

In this special episode, Gresham provides an update on a significant shift in his business focus. He acknowledged making a sizable investment and trying hard, but the lack of movement and leads has brought him to a crossroads. The speaker is now contemplating whether to switch gears entirely or continue on a reduced basis, realizing he must prioritize other areas of his business that are showing more activity. Despite the shift, he has re-joined BNI (Business Networking International) specifically for the franchise brokerage opportunity, recognizing it as the highest potential revenue stream.  Gresham concludes by outlining his current business priorities: Blue 16 Media is the bill-payer, CEO Hacks is the most in alignment and unique, and the Franchise Brokerage has the largest financial upside, despite being his third priority. He is taking a step back from the franchise business because it proved more challenging than anticipated, choosing to navigate the "ebbs and flows" of his ventures one step at a time. Play Episode Listen Later Nov 22, 2025 7:22

In this special episode, Gresham emphasizes the need for self-reflection to understand how he reached his current point, noting that getting "off path" is usually a gradual process, not a single decision. He had to make necessary, albeit unpleasant, decisions for the health of his business, which involved drilling down into the numbers for each micro-business or "pod" and resetting expectations. The core issue was realizing that he was working hard to generate more revenue just to maintain existing overhead, only to have opportunities "fumbled" due to a lack of his own presence or execution. This prompted a massive effort to restructure and reboot the entire system.  The restructuring led to the crucial realization that not all business "pods" are worth growing, which requires a new focus and clarity. Specifically, he is rethinking his franchise brokerage business model. Instead of guiding clients through the entire process himself, he is considering pivoting it into a lead generation machine, handing off opportunities to more experienced brokers for a split.  Blue Star Franchise: bluestarfranchise.com Browse the Franchise Inventory: bluestarfranchise.com/franchise Is franchising right for you? In this special episode, Gresh begins with a thought experiment: if he were starting his business journey today, knowing what he knows now, how would he approach it, specifically focusing on lead generation. He recalls the constant desire during his own path to be ahead of where he started. He notes that the perennial challenge in this type of business remains how to effectively generate leads, acknowledging that there is no single, solid, established "new formula" for this crucial process, prompting a need for continuous experimentation. Drawing inspiration from listening to an entrepreneur's long-form content, the speaker realizes that the key focus should not be merely on the quantity of leads, but their quality.  Ultimately, Gresham concludes that if he were to start over, he would pivot his entire focus to becoming a specialist lead generation company. Instead of handling the entire broker process (calling, qualifying, and guiding), he would generate quality leads and then partner with established brokers, splitting the commission.  Blue Star Franchise: bluestarfranchise.com Browse the Franchise Inventory: bluestarfranchise.com/franchise Is franchising right for you? He recounts his own low point—being fired twice, working a graveyard‑shift custodial job, and hitting rock bottom—before pivoting to public speaking in 2013, eventually securing paid gigs, coaching Fortune 500 clients, and building a robust team of specialists who support his podcast, CRM, operations, and creative production. In this episode, Gresham candidly shares the hurdles he's faced in his first year: no closed deals yet, restructuring his marketing company, personal setbacks and juggling family responsibilities. Despite generating a sizable pool of leads, his outreach—via Google Ads, LinkedIn DMs, Facebook groups, and newsletters—has produced little traction. He notes that franchise sales cycles can stretch up to a year, and he's still searching for low‑hanging‑fruit opportunities that haven't materialized through his existing channels. Recognizing that big‑budget spending has been ineffective, Gresham plans to reboot his marketing approach by leaning into his strengths: personal networks (BNI), organic content creation, and modest test ads to identify what works. He also mentions challenges such as client layoffs, under‑delivering strategy sessions, and weighing the ROI of a mentorship program he feels isn't paying off. Despite the hurdles, Gresh emphasizes the power of networking. He recounts gaining referrals through a BNI group, which led to a promising conversation about a potential franchisor. He acknowledges that consistent outreach—especially to people affected by layoffs—is essential, even if the volume of responses can be low. He reflects on the inevitable setbacks—crying, yelling, feeling stretched thin—and emphasizes the importance of patience, honesty, and realistic expectations. In this episode, Gresh shifts to the challenges he's faced in his existing digital‑marketing and franchise‑brokerage businesses. After years of relying heavily on his own involvement, he realized the models had hit a ceiling and required major pivots. He discusses how his original target market for the brokerage didn't generate enough traction, prompting him to rethink prospecting strategies—using LinkedIn to focus on people with clear pain points, such as those affected by layoffs, and reshaping the business foundation to become more scalable and less dependent on him alone. The conversation ends with a personal metaphor: Gresh recounts training for a 10‑mile run and adopting the Galloway run‑walk method to build endurance despite limited time. He parallels this fitness adjustment with the business pivots he's making—recognizing when a current approach no longer works, breaking things down to the “studs,” and rebuilding from the ground up.  Blue Star Franchise: bluestarfranchise.com Browse the Franchise Inventory: bluestarfranchise.com/franchise Is franchising right for you? His broader advice for entrepreneurs is to focus on solving real problems for real people who have real money, warning against chasing vanity projects that lack market demand. Kevin believes great CEOs must have been good followers first, learning from mentors and mastering two‑way listening. In this episode, we have Mickie Kennedy, founder of eReleases, who turned a creative‑writing degree and a grueling wait‑staff job into a 25‑year PR career that helps small businesses get national media coverage without the huge budgets of big brands. He learned early that raw data alone doesn't attract journalists; stories need a hook and context. By building a Rolodex of ~10,000 journalists and partnering with PR Newswire for high‑volume, discounted distribution, he provides an affordable alternative to costly newswire services. Kennedy's key growth hack is a “survey‑and‑trade‑association” tactic: commission niche industry surveys, get trade groups to distribute them, and issue press releases that spotlight surprising findings. The resulting resource pages earn dozens of editorial links, boost SEO, and turn thin‑content sites into recognized thought‑leaders. He stresses targeting the right journalists, avoiding generic email blasts, and using contrarian angles to stand out—plus trusting hires, avoiding micromanagement, and constantly split‑testing processes.  Website: www.ereleases.com LinkedIn: Mickie Kennedy   Check out our CEO Hack Buzz Newsletter–our premium newsletter with hacks and nuggets to level up your organization. In this special episode, Gresham then shifts to a personal story that led to his current drive: being laid off after years of “purpose‑filled” work running sports camps for young children in Northern Virginia. Despite his dedication—early arrivals, late stays, driving across the region, and filling in whenever needed—he felt discarded, which forced him to confront the deeper frustration of never being given a real chance to build his own business. That painful turning point ignited a long‑standing entrepreneurial spark. Gresham recalls early side‑hustles—selling potato chips on a playground, publishing a family newsletter, and taking sales jobs solely to learn how to launch something of his own. Now, with the layoff acting as a catalyst, he's committed to turning his vision into reality. Jason explains that his primary motivation is to be present for his family, and after the birth of his first child he realized his deeper purpose: to guide other creators toward the same balance of financial stability and personal freedom. He leverages his own experience—recurring client work, community building, and two podcasts (“Live in the Feast” and “Ask Res”)—to offer templates, strategies, and personal lessons that cut through the overwhelm of today's information‑heavy market. Jason's coaching focuses on narrowing an ideal‑client profile, identifying red‑flags, and providing actionable templates that shorten the learning curve for his students. In this special episode, Gresham Harkless Jr. frames the show as a resource for anyone building a business, emphasizing the value of sharing real‑time experiences and encouraging listeners to subscribe for more content. He then recounts his personal experience with layoffs, beginning with his first layoff in his early twenties, describes the fear, disappointment, and feeling of being misled that came with a reduction in force, noting how the instability of early jobs forced him to confront the reality that no one—not even CEOs—is immune to job loss. This turning point sparked a mindset shift: rather than waiting for another opportunity, he decided to “burn the boats” and pursue entrepreneurship, recognizing that the stakes would feel far higher later in life when family responsibilities increase. Seeing franchising as a hybrid path that blends entrepreneurial ownership with a proven business model, Gresham explains why he gravitated toward this avenue. He is compiling resources, such as a “layoff survival list,” to help others facing similar setbacks and hopes to connect with listeners who might become franchise candidates.  Blue Star Franchise: http://bluestarfranchise.com Browse the Franchise Inventory: https://bluestarfranchise.com/franchise Is franchising right for you? Gresh delves into his personal philosophy, rejecting “impossible” as an excuse used by those who fear stepping outside their comfort zones. He reframes “possible” not as a fact but as a dare, a temporary state that can be expanded through mindset work. By challenging his own assumptions, questioning self‑imposed “facts,” and confronting setbacks with curiosity rather than defeat, he illustrates how shifting perspective can dissolve mental barriers. This internal work feeds into his broader goal of creating a “limitless” business model that continuously levels up, rather than settling for static results. In this episode, Gresh pivots to a quick primer on franchising, demystifying the model for anyone unfamiliar with it. He describes the franchisor (the “Zor”) who owns the brand and system, and the franchisee (the “Z”) who purchases the rights to run a local operation. By leveraging an established playbook, brand recognition, training, and ongoing support, a franchisee can bypass the guesswork of starting a business from scratch. Gresh highlights that while well‑known names like McDonald's and Chick‑fil‑A dominate the conversation, there are hundreds of lesser‑known opportunities across a wide range of industries. Gresh underscores why franchising is especially relevant today: people are seeking stability, purpose, flexibility, and a safety net that traditional entrepreneurship often lacks. Whether someone is transitioning from corporate life, looking for a side hustle, or aiming for full‑time ownership, there's likely a franchise model that fits.
