It's the last destination of Season 2 before a very special 'Finale' episode, and where better to go than the country that many credit for being the birthplace of the Blockchain movement: Canada... Yes, Canada... Canada has had a surprisingly significant influence from the original Bitcoin white paper, to the founding of Ethereum, Crypto Kitties, the Blockchain Research Institute and much more... While Canadians are famously modest about their achievements, I'm going to do my civic duty and shine a light on the impressive Blockchain projects, the people and associations behind the rise of Blockchain in Canada. This might just be the most enlightening show we've ever produced, and we've got a VERY special guest speaker for this episode's Bonus Round! We include speakers from leading Blockchain organisations like Stellar, Shyft, Linux Foundation, Hut 8 Mining, Shopify, Guild One, Veritree, Deloitte, MHH Technology Group, Blockchain Supply Chain Association and Global University Systems; as well as leading academic institutions like ICTC, George Brown College, and the University of British Columbia... Oh, and a rather significant guest speaker... A veteran of 7 MILLION Ted Talk views, author of the most-read book on Blockchain, and founder of the Blockchain Research Institute: it's the legendary Don Tapscott! Do not miss the chance to hear the great man's take on the good and the bad of Blockchain in Canada, and what more is needed to scale Blockchain technology in Canada and around the world. More than 4 years ago, Don Tapscott gave a groundbreaking talk on how blockchain is changing money and business. He believes blockchain is the key in transitioning from the internet of information into a new era — the internet of value. The lessons he shared still ring true today with one of the best analogies suggesting that Bitcoin is the first application of the internet of value as email was the first app in the internet of information. And along this train of thought, Ethereum is akin to what the early web was many years ago, both with incredible future potential. In this episode Don Tapscott explores: Crypto bubble vs Dotcom bubble Cracking the double spend problem The Ethereum flippening Signing a book for Mark Zuckerburg Privacy as the foundation of freedom Blockchain's radical changes The internet of value Criminals using new technology Bill Maher's stupid takes Digital conglomerates The technological genie --- This episode is brought to you by Voyager, your new favorite crypto broker. Don Tapscott talks about BlockChain and the crisis of legitimacy of democracy – exhibit A the United States. What is that crisis? Why does it exist? What's happening in the US today, with the President refusing to concede? Dale Chrystie is a Business Fellow and Blockchain Strategist at FedEx who has been in the transportation industry for over 30 years. He also serves as chairman of the Blockchain in Transport Alliance (BiTA) Standards Council, and is a member of the Blockchain Research Institute. In this podcast Dale walks us through the work FedEx is doing in the blockchain space and his view on why he believes the future of blockchain is an open source one instead of a consortium one. What is blockchain? Dale believes that to effectively define what is blockchain to as wide an audience as possible you need to use basic language and basic concepts. He boils blockchain down to five words: digital, ledger, permanent, transparent, and shared. Blockchain is a digital ledger that is permanent and uses cryptography. Once an entry is added to the ledger it can’t be changed. It’s transparent to all relevant parties and it is shared which is to say it exists on the cloud. Having said that, Dale is also known for characterising blockchain at conferences as boring and useless. Because blockchain is just a database that sits amongst many other tried and tested databases that are fast, process millions of transactions, are enterprise ready and ruggedised. Blockchain isn’t quite there yet. It isn’t very fast, scalable or mature. However, what it does, it does really well. For example, where authenticity and provenance matter, blockchain will completely change worldwide supply chains. Challenges of the logistic industry and the role blockchain can play The logistics industry is one where information systems use paper legal documents and electronic data is transmitted via electronic data interchange (EDI) and where documents are often shared via email, fax and courier. In the freight industry or the Less than Truckload (LTL), industry as it is known in the US, has been using paper process with bills of lading, documents and manifests for decades. Dale believes it is ripe for moving forward into the digital world. In 1978, Fred Smith founder of FedEx, is famous for saying "The information about the package is as important as the package itself." For Dale, Smith was way ahead of his time as that statement still holds true today. He believes that we are at this very unique intersection of the physical world and the digital world. Where on one side you have the physical world and on the other you have a digital twin of it which contains data about the package. Blockchain is the first technology where companies will be able to share selected data in a peer to peer fashion without the need of middlemen. For Dale, blockchain has opened our eyes to what is in the realm of the possible. He doesn’t think of blockchain as process improvement. He thinks of it as a breakthrough technology. As he states if you look at blockchain as process improvement you can do this with existing legacy technology. If you look at blockchain within the breakthrough realm then no existing legacy technology could have changed the art of what is possible and the nature of the conversation as blockchain has done. Fedex blockchain journey Fedex’s blockchain journey started around a process in the dispute resolution area that was causing freight claims for a couple of million dollars a year. Around that time Walmart had a few early use cases in the food safety space which had inspired Dale on how blockchain could be used. The identified issue was for a three party dispute resolution scenario involving a receiver, a shipper and a carrier. The issue was that the receiver was ordering hypothetically 100 items from the shipper via a purchase order. The shipper then received it and fulfilled it. In their fulfilment process they pushed it to the warehouse in two pallets of 40 items and created a bill of lading. The two pallets of 40 and the bill of lading is given to the carrier and ultimately delivered to the receiver.

Don Tapscott is the Co-Founder and Executive Chairman at the Blockchain Research Institute and bestselling author of 16 books. His most recent book is Blockchain Revolution: How the Technology Behind Bitcoin is Changing Money, Business, and the World. Don has been on the Thinkers50 list 5 times, most recently in 2017 when he was ranked #2 on the list. He also wrote the afterword for my 2012 book, The Collaborative Organization. At the Blockchain Research Institute, Don and his team study hundreds of cases and stories within 15 industries in order to document the strategic implications of blockchain. Because of this research they are able to help leaders in business and government navigate the blockchain revolution. Why do we need blockchain? As Don explains up until now we have had intermediaries such as banks, brockers, credit card companies, governments, etc… in order to make sure that assets are safe. But these intermediaries are getting hacked and they sometimes have processes that are outdated, lengthy and costly. That is where blockchain comes in. The intermediaries will not disappear altogether, but the value will change. He says, “I think the opportunity to create new value, may be bigger than the old disintermediation. I mean, look at... Barnes and Noble suffered, but look at Amazon, it's the most valuable company in the world now. It's in the middle, right in that space. So I said, "The problem is, the leaders of the old middle are not typically the ones to create the new middles." So what happens to these people? Well, we're of the view the future is not something to be predicted, it's something to be achieved. It depends on what they do. And traditional people in the middle, I'd say Western Union, I wouldn't think that they have a huge chance. I don't know the company very well, but I don't see a lot of signs that they're trying to innovate a whole new model for remittances globally, using this technology. So it's really up to you.” Blockchain still has a long way to go, it’s still, as Don says, “relatively immature”. It’s going to take awhile to fully implement it, but it is still a profound advancement and it is definitely going to impact the way we live and work. Don’s advice to individuals and leaders is to be curious and look into blockchain to learn what you can about it. He says if you run a large corporation it doesn’t matter what function you are in--whether you are the CEO, in HR, even in marketing--you will be affected by blockchain and there will be big opportunities to utilize it. What you will learn: What is blockchain and how is it impacting the future of work Don’s advice for the younger generation currently in college The implications of AI--will they be positive or negative? A look at specific trends that are forcing organizations to take blockchain more seriously now Don’s advice for both non-leaders and leaders on what we should be doing about blockchain

According to Don Tapscott, Co-founder and Executive Chairman at Blockchain Research Institute, Sweetbridge is "truly a pioneer of this next era of the digital revolution". As he goes on to say, they certainly have a bold vision to improve the way we do business, and make global commerce more accessible for everyone. So via a recent TeamBlockchainMasterclass event at CMS, I took the opportunity to explore that vision with Alastair Band of Sweetbridge, who're looking to create a decentralised OS for global commerce. We talk about Sweetbridge launching a two-token economic system where their Sweetcoin and Bridgecoin serve separate, but entirely complementary, purposes. Alistair says, growing your community is not about paying for Telegram users; it’s about connecting people, getting them together, getting them talking. And blockchain gives the opportunity to distribute not only information, but also wealth, and thereby make the world a fairer place, targeting different demographics and to giving everyone an equal opportunity to profit. The Sweetbridge ICO offers both the Sweetcoin, a membership token used within their application, and the stable Bridgecoin backed by real-world assets. In short, Sweetbridge will offer usage tokens that you can later offset against loan interest. And Bridgecoin loans can be set against your assets. If you want to put an extension on your house, you don’t have to go to the bank and re-mortgage. You can put your house in the smart contract allowing you to create liquidity in the value of your property, and borrow funds against that. Your loan is issued in Bridgecoin, which you can then change to fiat currency to pay the builder. And if you have enough Sweetcoin lodged, you can stake that against the loan, and reduce your interest potentially down to 0%. It’s cutting out an awful lot of those dreaded middle men… And finally there will also be a Sweetbridge accounting protocol, basically an app where everything, all your assets, your house value, your stocks, your shares, your crypto assets, plus an API which plugs into your banking and shows your banking assets, all your savings accounts, how much is left on your mortgage, in one real place. It’s not just a wallet for Sweetbridge, it’s a wallet for everything. So far, Sweetbridge have raised £12 million of their £65 million total goal. Think that sounds a lot? As Alistair says, they are trying to disrupt a $54 trillion industry, after all. Sweetbridge believes it can affect every single product in our lives, making things cheaper to produce, easier to access. There’s a real-world impact to this, from making it easier and cheaper to raise finance to facilitating rice production in South East Asia. And if there’s one final thought to take away from this interview, it’s the inevitable and incontestable: there is a better way.
