Michelle and Lindsey in conversation with Sarah Leung, of the Woks of Life, and Christina Chan of Choy Division. Learn about why these women were inspired to bring their family traditions to a larger audience, and also how to grow and prepare bok choy. Sarah Leung, The Woks of Life Sarah Leung is a food blogger, photographer, and one of the founders of The Woks of Life, a multigenerational family blog she runs with her parents Bill and Judy Leung and sister Kaitlin Leung. What began in 2013 as a quest to record their family's history through food has become a robust online community, an authority on Chinese cooking, and a platform to tell stories and share food across distances, demystifying traditional Chinese cooking and creating recipes for a new generation. https://thewoksoflife.com/ Christina Chan, Choy Division Christina Chan is the owner and farmer of Choy Division, which is the culmination of her passions and interests. As a native New Yorker and second-generation Chinese-American, she often felt torn between being American and being Chinese. Sustainably growing Asian vegetables has been a way of connecting the two halves of herself, of finding her way back home, and of reconnecting with her culture and her family. For her, farming is about more than putting seeds in the ground, it is about the cultivation of the community around you. After all, food is what connects each and every one of us. She believes that fresh, locally grown food is a right, not a privilege, and strives to make her produce accessible to all communities. She has worked at Stepney City Farm,(London, UK), Randall's Island Urban Farm, (New York, NY), Rise & Root Farm (Chester, NY) and counts herself incredibly lucky to have mentors in Larry Tse of Dig Acres, Kristyn Leach of Namu Farm, and Dan McManus of Common Hands Farm. https://www.instagram.com/choydivision/ More episode links: Second Generation Seeds https://www.secondgenerationseeds.com/our-seeds Kitazawa Seed Company https://www.kitazawaseed.com/index.html

This week’s featured farmer: Dan McManus, Common Hands Farm, Hudson Valley, NY. Dan has lived much of his life in and around biodynamic farm communities, first during his early years in South Australia, and then as a teen in New York, working on and apprenticing under numerous farms. After working and managing his own masonry business for ten years, he desired to put these skills to a more creative use, and began traveling with mentor and teacher Johannes Matthiessen building social sculptures all over the world. He has also studied tracking and primitive skills in VT and holds a certificate in Permaculture Design. Through his studies in associative economics, social-threefolding and peer-lead learning models, Dan’s passion for working and learning with others continues to grow. Now the owner and head farmer of a large CSA outside of Hudson, Common Hands Farm, he works with his partner Tess on 20 acres of land growing vegetables, fruit, herbs, flowers, small grains. Together they supply 5 farmers markets, local restaurants and wholesale accounts, and a 140 member CSA locally and in Brooklyn. There is so much beauty and possibility in merging organic farming with the health of our local communities, and Dan feels blessed to be part of this movement. This program was brought to you by Heritage Foods USA. “The goal behind our entire farm is to help pave the road for not just our farms but many farms — to serve our most local communities.” [01:00] –Dan McManus on Greenhorns Radio
This week on Greenhorn Radio, Severine talks with Dan McManus of Common Hands Farm in Hudson, NY. Dan has lived much of his life around biodynamic communities, both from his early years in South Australia, and moving to New York working and apprenticing on numerous farms. Dan began to realize for himself, after desiring a more direct connection to what nourishes himself and others, that there is no art more beautiful or important right now than growing food and designing effective and low impact systems of living from and supplying healthy, organic vegetables. Dan studied regenerative community design at Goddard College in Vermont, has managed a community garden project in low-income areas of Detroit, and has focused his masonry skills by working on transformational social sculpture with mentor and teacher Johannes Matthiessen throughout the world. He has also studied tracking and primitive skills in Vermont and holds a certificate in Permaculture Design. Through his studies and interests in associative economics, social-threefolding and peer-lead learning models, Dan seeks to continue learning through farming and working with others. This program was sponsored by White Oak Pastures. “The work that people are doing with food culture- and just documenting what is going on is amazing. And these resources are what have really kept us going…the amount of stuff going on in the community is what really makes it possible to be a starting farmer today.” — Dan McManus on Greenhorn Radio
