It's no secret that massive change is needed to restore our planet's vital ecosystems. Permaculture offers practices to restore local environments by focusing on creating sustainable agricultural systems that mimic patterns found in nature. But how might permaculture initiatives go beyond agriculture to transform some of our largest-scale problems, such as social cohesion, climate stabilization, and even human migration? In this conversation, Nate sits down with permaculture educator Andrew Millison to discuss the Great Green Wall project, a massive ecological initiative aimed at combating desertification in the Sahel region of Africa. They explore the causes of the Sahara Desert's expansion, the simple but impactful permaculture techniques being employed to restore land, and the significant ecological and nutritional benefits resulting from these efforts. This conversation highlights the collaboration between local communities and global organizations, emphasizing permaculture's potential to transform lives and ecosystems around the world.  How can innovative permaculture techniques aid in helping our most complex ecological challenges? In what ways have land restoration projects reduced conflict between people in resource scarce areas? Furthermore, what kinds of  responses – both grassroots and top-down – are needed to implement these practices on a large scale?   About Andrew Millison: Andrew Millison is an innovative educator, storyteller and designer. He founded the Permaculture Design education program at Oregon State University (OSU) in 2009. At OSU Andrew serves as an Education Director and Senior Instructor who offers over 25 years of experience, and a playful approach to regenerative design. Andrew is also a documentary videographer who travels the world documenting epic permaculture projects in places such as India, Egypt, Mexico, Cuba, and throughout the US. If we are in the midst of the Great Derangement (thank you Amitav Ghosh), what tools do we have to help us shape a system that is actually fit for purpose? Who are our elders and what can they teach us? How do we learn to listen to our heart's (and hearts') desire and shape the communities of place, passion and purpose that will allow us to emerge into a different culture? Our two guests this week live and work at the heart of a global movement for cultural change.  Looby Macnamara is the co-founder of the Cultural Emergence movement. She is an author, designer, gardener, song leader, mother, and artist. She has written four influential books including People & Permaculture and Cultural Emergence - and she has a new one coming out in September: Design Adventures: Discover a Creative Framework for Effective Change.  She is also creator of the CEED card deck - Cultural Emergence Empowerment & Design.  With her partner, Chris, Looby runs Applewood Permaculture Centre in Herefordshire, UK, where they facilitate courses and demonstrate permaculture of both land and people . Leona Johnson, host of Connection Matters Podcast, is a transformational life coach, connection facilitator, and guide dedicated to personal growth, cultural emergence, and regenerative ways of being. She has spent decades exploring how we heal the crisis of disconnection, within ourselves, in our relationships, and in the world around us.Through her work in nature connection, rites of passage, life coaching, and cultural emergence, she supports people to step into Connected Self-Leadership and what she calls ‘Everyday Spirituality' practical, embodied ways of living with depth, purpose, and alignment.Leona co-hosts the PEACE course with Looby and online with Jon Young, runs the Connection Matters Leadership Programme, Nature Quests around the world, and Children, Nature & Spirituality courses. At the heart of her work is a simple but powerful message: When we remember our interconnectedness, with ourselves, each other, and the other than human world, we step into our fullest potential and create the conditions for a thriving world. These two transformational women are part of a growing movement to shift the entire foundation of our culture. What happens if we stop being the hamsters in the wheel of modernity and become the lively, inspiring, inspired - and connected - individuals we could be?  In this episode we explore the nature of cultural emergence, the values that could underpin our new culture and the real, grounded, practical ways we can begin the journeys of shift in ourselves and our communities. Cultural Emergence www.cultural-emrgence.comCultural Emergence Courses https://cultural-emergence.com/courses-overview/PEACE Course (24th - 29th June 2025)  https://applewoodcourses.com/uk_courses/peace-empowerment-and-cultural-emergence/Applewood Courses https://applewoodcourses.com/courses/Looby's Books https://applewoodcourses.com/sales/books/Leona's website: https://www.leonajohnson.life/Leona's podcast Connection Matters https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/connection-matters-podcast/id1515564368Leona's FREE mini course on Elemental Connection  https://pages.leonajohnson.life/elemental-connections-helloandIf you want to share the journey with Accidental Gods, we're here: Accidental Gods Gatherings https://accidentalgods.life/gatherings-2025/Accidental Gods Membership https://accidentalgods.life/join-us/

After 8 years of interviewing people in the regeneration sector, It's become clear to me that knowledge is not as valuable as experience. Gathering facts, concepts and theories is great up to a point, but until you put those ideas into practice, it's impossible to know if those ideas clash with your reality, or require adaptation to what's really going on on the ground. For this reason I was excited to see that Don Hall, who has worked with the transition towns movement in various capacities for 16 years now, has come out with a new book titled, The Regeneration Handbook: Transform Yourself to Transform the World. Don also holds a Master's in Environmental Leadership from Naropa University, a certification in Permaculture Design from the Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute and is currently the Training Coordinator for Transition Network. You can find accounts of much of his work and learnings at his website and blog at evolutionary change.org In this episode a lot of what we explore revolves around the International Transition Network, how it started, and how it's grown to a movement since the early 2000s. We go into Don's practical experience building the transition movement in both Colorado and Florida, some of the shared priorities of those communities that formed the basis of initiatives and unity that was formed, and how others can participate in creating these kinds of programs in their own communities. We also get into related topics like how transition is as much an internal process as an external community one, and the skills that Don believes we need to relearn in order to live in close knit communities the way that almost everyone used to in recent history.

My guest for this episode is Ben Falk. If you don't know Ben, he's the author of The Resilient Farm and Homestead, 20 Years of Permaculture and Whole Systems Design, which I would describe as THE homesteading manual and is the result of decades of Ben's life in Vermont designing, implementing, and maintaining regenerative polycultures systems. Ben is very well known in the permaculture world, but isn't known so much in the wine world… which seemed a shame to me, as he has immense practical knowledge to share that would be useful to those of us growing wine. We cover many topics, as usual, in this conversation. From the state of the world, to learning how to design your life to be able to spend more time working in the land. And we get practical about many aspects of growing and maintaining fruiting perennials… which is my catch all term for grapes, apples, pears, berries, etc that we use to make wine. I've been thinking a lot about how owners of smaller vineyards can incorporate grazing, since the larger ruminants like sheep and cows are difficult to keep in any significant numbers without a good bit of land. Ben loves working with cows more than sheep, as it turns out, and has some great suggestions about how to protect your fruiting perennials from them. But we also dig into geese, which are also amazing grazers for smaller vineyards and orchards, and have their own nuances, as well as ducks, chickens, fencing, livestock guardian dogs, and more. Also, Ben has some beautiful things to say about mead making and has very much inspired me to consider mead making. Ben asks us to consider resilience in our winemaking. What kind of winegrowing and making can we continue to do indefinitely? What kind of wine makes our land continually healthier and more lush? What kind of winemaking makes our lives happier and more energetic? What kind of winemaking can continue to nourish us regardless of the changing whims and trends of the wine market? I think you'll find that Ben has some great insights into answering these questions. https://www.wholesystemsdesign.com/ Support this episode by subscribing via patreon. In this interview, I visited Itai Hauben at his lovely home and permaculture education center called Adama. Adama is nestled in the mountains of the Chirripo River Valley, where Itai and his wife Melina teach permaculture design courses to lucky students every year. It's also the headquarters of Symbiosis Eco Design, their permaculture design and implementation business, serving land projects nationwide. Symbiosis is a powerful change agent in this country ecologically, socially, and educationally. We got together to chat about why creating a permaculture design is such a highly recommended investment BEFORE making any significant investments into any land-based endeavor. Itai gives several examples illustrating the importance of hiring a professional who can read the landscape and avoid potential pitfalls. In addition, Itai emphasizes the need to conduct proper due diligence before purchasing a property and hiring specialists to ensure the security of your investment. There are some things that just can't be undone!Understanding and integrating local knowledge into permaculture design can't be overstated. We've delved into the critical aspects of water management, soil stability, and the creation of food forests, illustrating the importance of thoughtful, well-planned permaculture designs. Learning from our mistakes is ordinary, meaningful, and part of the journey. Learning from other people's mistakes through research or hiring the assistance of someone further along the path is wisdom, and an integral part of the permaculture design process. The episode wraps up with talks on preventing burnout and pacing a project according to the client's needs. Let's carry forward the wisdom and inspiration from Itai's journey. Remember, the path to successful, sustainable living and professional growth in permaculture is paved with patience, planning, and a profound respect for the surprises that can be found amidst the natural world. May we all embrace these principles in our own endeavors, nurturing a future where both our environment and our businesses can flourish in harmony. To follow more of Itai's contributions toward a regenerative world, check out:Website - https://symbiosiscr.com/ FB - https://www.facebook.com/SymbiosisEcoDesign IG - https://www.instagram.com/adama_permaculture/ Email - symbiosisecodesign@gmail.com Other recommendations:Regeneration of desert into forests in Jordan https://www.greeningthedesertproject.org/ To support the show, go to https://ko-fi.com/regenerationnationcr. You can now also visit our website's Resources page to find lots of great information and products that many have found to make their lives better.  Visit: https://regenerationnationcr.com/resources Support the show

Today I interview Joshua Longbrook on real world applications of Private Membership Associations for creating systems of support - i.e. the parallel society - outside the jurisdiction of the public (State dominated) sphere. We'll cover what PMAs are, what protections they do and do not offer, how they are best utilized as extensions of a larger unincorporated Church, and the types of voluntary interactions they enable within and between local communities. We'll also get into Josh's personal experience with running the Agora Food Club and how the structure has enabled many home-scale producers to supply their wares or seasonal abundance to their fellow food club members in exchange for credits they can apply towards their own grocery bill. I think this is one of the "killer apps" the PMA structure can provide a network of homestead-minded people. Let's face it - even if you're just gardening for yourself, or have a small orchard with even a handful of fruit trees, it's very easy to be overwhelmed with the seasonal abundance from these systems. The PMA creates a way for these small scale producers to exchange their goods that doesn't require all of the licensing and legal hopscotch that becoming an official business does. The PMA literally enables the creation of circular, local economies without the energetic drain of taxes, licensing and all the things the State requires to be deemed "legal". As Josh shares in the interview, a PMA enables the same dynamics that take place when you invite friends over for dinner - you cook food for them in your home (no food service business license, no health inspections etc), you might offer them a drink of wine (no liquor license required), and you might even offer them a bottle to take home for a few bucks. All of this is OK within the confines of your private home, but for some reason when this activity takes place in a business, and selling is happening, then it needs to be regulated (and taxed). The PMA is basically just a bigger dinner party with more friends all happening within the private sphere. Debt, Wealth & Counter-Economics As A Means To Create A World Worth Inheriting ~Epi-073

How do we create a regenerative economy and all that entails when that work is arbitrarily outlawed, suppressed or actively disincentivized by the value systems that dominate our current culture? HINT: We have to step outside of the current imposed power structure - no permission required. My presupposition for this episode is this: Mainstream, state sponsored and enforced economic theory and practice has herded humanity as a whole onto a degenerative trajectory with respect to environmental integrity, social cohesion and individual well-being. We are living in a debt-driven world - stealing from future generations so we can have more now. If we want to live regeneratively, there has to be another way of meeting our needs today without destroying the ecosystems that provide them. In fact, we need to make them stronger and more productive! That "other way" is Counter-Economics. Counter-Economics is the theory and practice of all human action neither accepted by the State nor involving any initiatory violence or threat of violence. Counter-Economics exists and can be practiced outside the boundaries of State power (the State being that institution that has a legal monopoly on the use of force within a certain arbitrary geographic border). State power exists at the intersection of three things: Scope – laws on the books. Reach – boots on the ground. Will – what lives in the heart of the agent of the State. To engage in the counter economy is to engage only in moral actions (voluntary, without initiation or or threat of violence). They may or may not be legal as viewed from the perspective of the State Agent. In order to get to a regenerative economy, we have to add one more layer - an ethical framework provided by the Prime Directive and three ethics of permaculture. Prime Directive: The only ethical decision is to take responsibility for yourself and your dependents. Make it now. Permaculture Ethics Care Of The Earth: Provision for all life systems to continue and multiply. Care Of People: Provision for people to access those resources necessary for their own existence. Setting Limits To Population And Consumption: By governing our own needs, we can set resources aside to reinvest towards the first two ethics. Once we have combined Counter-Economics with the ecologically sound guideposts from permaculture, we have created the foundation for a truly regenerative economy. One in which the 7th Generation Principle can come to fruition in act and spirit:  The 7th Generation Principle: A 7th generation systems creates socially and economically fulfilling lives for its inhabitants, whose daily activity patterns regenerate natural ecosystems and increase living capital year over year, such that the economic and social value of natural ecosystems is always increasing, and the value-ing of those systems is transmitted intact across generations.   Show Resources The Regenerative Agora: Counter-Economics For Stewards Of The Future The Prime Directive, Ethics and Principles Of Permaculture The 7th Generation Principle: Designing Ecosystems For Continuity Across Generations Counter-Economics: From The Back Alleys To The Stars - by Samuel Edward Konkin III   ____________________________________________________________________________ WHAT I DO: Design: On-Site Consultation Online Site/Project Consultation Holistic Ecosystem Design   Implementation: Water Harvesting Earthworks High-function, Low-Maintenance Access Living Systems Spring Development   Courses: Minimum Holistic Goal Building Your Sovereign Homestead   Media: The Sovereign Homestead Podcast YouTube Instagram

Today's episode is a short primer on live staking - what it is, how it works, what its good for, what types of species you can use to do it, and how to harvest, prepare and plant your live stakes. If you have perennially moist soils in need of stabilization, or are able to irrigate certain areas to ensure adequate soil moisture for establishment, you can plant hundreds of trees for pennies per stem and create living structures that provide many layers of function while getting stronger over time! Why We Use Functions-First Design To Create Holistic Ecosystems ~Epi-069

When we design holistic ecosystems, we start with mapping out desired and required functions THEN search for, select and/or design elements/systems that provide those functions in a way that aligns with the site-specific context. This is contrasted with how most people "design" systems - they see an ad or read an article and like the thing or the method/technique they see, and then say "I want thing A" or "I'm going to do technique B" on my land. And then systems start being built around these sexy, cool things that are out of alignment with the context of time and place. Today I hope I can convince you that starting your homestead design (or re-design) by first assessing your desired and required functions - and thus creating a map of functions and functional outcomes that you require to support your chosen Quality of Life - that you can then much more quickly and effectively design or select the appropriate elements to populate your design. This is functions-first design, and I encourage everyone to at least give function mapping a try when designing their homesteads.   Show Resources The Prime Directive, Ethics and Principles of Permaculture The 4 R's of Regenerative Hydrology   ____________________________________________________________________________ WHAT I DO: Design: On-Site Consultation Online Site/Project Consultation Holistic Ecosystem Design   Implementation: Water Harvesting Earthworks High-function, Low-Maintenance Access Living Systems Spring Development   Courses: Minimum Holistic Goal   Media: The Sovereign Homestead Podcast YouTube Instagram

Today is an expose about one of America's dirty secrets - we're talking about the nation wide biosolids program. Supposedly its a great way to beneficially cycle a "renewable resource" to help fertilize crop fields, protect water sheds and keep people healthy. In reality, its anything but - and we know from first hand knowledge because we lived with it right across the street from us for months.  For any would-be homesteader looking to re-locate to the country, be aware of the potential for biosolids in your watershed and potentially right across the fence (as in our case). This is a huge problem, one that has resulted from a society and civil infrastructure built around the assumptions of a perpetual and never-ending supply of cheap energy. Now those chickens are coming home to roost, and its on us to fix it. First things first we have to learn just how extensive the problem of dealing with our own shit is so we can wrap our heads around what will be required to retrofit existing systems to make them work for a lower energy future. Today's show is all about the things you have to do to get yourself onto your land quickly without shooting yourself in the foot withe improperly located or oriented structures and roads. Vehicle access is basically an absolute necessity in today's world. By their very nature, roads are a break from the inherent landform, and thus ALL ROADS CAPTURE AND MOVE WATER. This is just part of what a road does. If you put in a road, or are inheriting a road without understanding that fact, you will pay for it later - all it takes is one good storm. So today, in this first installment of the Making Landfall series, we're zero-ing in on Water > Access > Structures - the three primary design layers that have to get sorted out quickly when you move onto a new landscape. Where am I going to live? How am I going to get to it? How will this affect and be affected by water moving through the landscape? This show is about the essential things you need to do to get it right and not create a Type 1 Error that will hamper your efforts to create your sovereign homestead as long as it exists. Show Resources Vehicle Access For Regenerative Landscapes - First Principles ~ the basic principles that guide planning and implementing vehicle access that has a regenerative effect on your site hydrology and ecosystem function. In this episode I am sharing what I have come to call the 7th Generation Principle - a principle guide post of sorts that I've been refining for nearly 10 years now to help guide my design work (for my own life and for others) in the direction of inter-generational regeneration. Basically, it seems like throughout human history we've actually lived in a truly sustainable fasion - i.e. regeneratively. Some of those examples even persisted for quite some time, but now we are left with very few intact cultures that can successfully transmit the cultural values of regeneration through time from one generation to the next. Even those that still exist are struggling to keep it up. This principles is my attempt at refining design imperatives such that we prepare fertile soil for the values of regeneration to once again take root in the hearts and minds of the up and coming generations, and for them to have the tools to successfully transmit those values to their descendants. We'll break down all the context and various pieces of it in the podcast, but here it is in full: A 7th generation system creates socially and economically fulfilling lives for its inhabitants, whose daily activity patterns regenerate natural ecosystems and increase living capital year over year, such that the economic and social value of natural ecosystems is always increasing, and the value-ing of those systems is transmitted intact across generations. In this episode I'll walk through the questions that led to me writing this principle this way, and the ways to apply it in your own lifestyle design using the Regenerative Triple Bottom Line - Economic, Social and Ecological to create guiding  criteria and questions to assess if you're on target or not. 5 Tenets Of Carnivore Homesteading ~ Epi-062

In today's show we discuss the idea of the Carnivore Homestead. For those of us that eat a mostly animal-based diet,  we want to produce mostly animal-based calories from our homestead production systems. I got news - just because we like to eat steak doesn't mean we aren't going to grow plants - in fact, we've got to grow them in greater quantity and quality in order to feed the animals that become our food. Carnivore homesteads have to be regenerative by their very nature if they are to be sustainable. Join me as we discuss the ins and outs of what I'm calling the 5 tenets of carnivore homesteading: Maximize Calorie Production / Unit Area - this means growing a better solar collector, which means growing lots of plants. We do this by managing the 4 pillars of any productive ecosystem - water, soil, light and life (biology/living organisms). Extend Calorie Production Throughout As Much Of The Year As Possible - extend the growing season, and no its not just about greenhouses, though those are great. Livestock Species Selection & Integration - select species that WILL thrive on what your land is innately good at producing, and integrate them with other species that improve the habitat for one another (non-competitive niches). Preserve Seasonal Abundance With Long Term Storage - we need to employ a variety of methods to preserve fat and protein during times of abundance for the times of dearth - freezers and canning are great, but there is so much more! Build relationships with other producers - don't go it alone! Animal products are high-value, and if you are producing one you probably have an abundance greater than you can use. Trading, exchanging or sell to or with other local producers creates stronger, healthier, more resilient communities and allows us to create our own food systems parallel to the mainstream commoditized, centralized and controlled industrial food system. Show Summary:    On this Reality Roundtable, Nate is joined by small-scale farmer Jason Bradford, permaculturist and documentarian Andrew Millison, regenerative agriculture activist Vandana Shiva, and regenerative farmer and educator Daniel Zetah to discuss the feasibility of a food system fully or mostly independent of fossil fuel inputs. While a non-industrialized agriculture system is certainly possible (it was the norm for the majority of human history), what that will look like and how we even begin such a transition is daunting with a population of 8 billion humans to feed. How do we teach people the skills they'll need as fossil inputs become less affordable, reliable, and accessible? Can we create a cultural shift towards a slower lifestyle that is more connected to the land which provides us food? What do the people of a society look like where we are once again centered around agriculture and in tune with the flows of nature? How would our relationship with jobs and the land have to change?   About Jason Bradford:   Jason Bradford has been affiliated with Post Carbon Institute since 2004, first as a Fellow and then as Board President. He worked for the Center for Conservation and Sustainable Development at the Missouri Botanical Garden, was a Visiting Scholar at U.C. Davis, and during that period co-founded the Andes Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research Group (ABERG). He decided to shift from academia to learn more about and practice sustainable agriculture, and in the process, completed six months of training with Ecology Action (aka GrowBiointensive) in Willits, California, and then founded Brookside School Farm. You can view his videos and series on his YouTube channel. About Vandana Shiva   Vandana Shiva is a well known activist, author of many books, and is a global champion on regenerative local agriculture, biodiversity and nutritious food. She has a PhD in physics and 40 years ago founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, an independent research institute that works on the most significant ecological problems of our times.  About Daniel Zetah:   Daniel grew up on a farm in Minnesota where he learned to fix all manner of things driven from an insatiable curiosity about how things worked. He studied economics and business at university. After waking to our planetary predicament, he became a full time environmental activist, then moved to an off grid community in the mountains where he studied permaculture and built straw bale houses. He moved back to America to help steer culture in a more sane direction. He and his wife Stephanie moved back to the family farm in Minnesota where they are growing 80% of their calories, rebuilding the local ecology, and educating and empowering people to wrest back control of their sovereignty as human beings.    For Show Notes and More visit: https://www.thegreatsimplification.com/episode/rr06-bradford-millison-shiva-zetah To watch this video episode on Youtube → https://youtu.be/lb2tJXopTJA

On this episode, Nate is joined by ‘permaculture' author and educator David Holmgren to discuss his experience within the movement and what it might look like for more systems to be designed using permaculture in the future. While often thought to be an agricultural tool, permaculture thinking is meant for designing human systems to be embedded in nature - an important principle for a future where societies will need to re-synchronize with natural flows. What does it mean for permaculture design to ‘scale up', and how is it different from how we usually think about growing a system? How will permaculture design change as we move through different phases of resource availability? More importantly, how can the ‘small and slow' foundation of permaculture help human societies adapt to a lower throughput future as we navigate The Great Simplification? About David Holmgren  David Holmgren is best known as the co-originator of permaculture. In 1978, he and Bill Mollison published Permaculture One, starting the global permaculture movement. Since then, David has developed three properties, consulted and supervised on urban and rural projects, written eight more books, and presented lectures, workshops and courses in Australia and around the world. His writings over those three decades span a diversity of subjects and issues, whilst always illuminating aspects of permaculture thinking and living. Hello and Welcome Back to The Earth Sea Love Podcast. Dr Sheree Mack, your host here.  I'll not lie. The promise I made at the beginning of 2023 of dropping at least one episode each month of the podcast was in the balance this month. July. A time I love to tie up loose end, retreat and rest. Call it the teacher in me, as I'm someone from time who loves to take the summer holidays off the clock. This year is no exception, except that I've just moved house and needed a rest more than ever. So this episode has been on the back burner. Knowing it's something I wanted to do, and promised to do, didn't help the process of getting it done. But finally it is here. I needed to get out of my head and just get into my body to produce it. I needed to get out of my way and just talk from the heart about my current learning. Permaculture Design. So I started a Permaculture Design Certificate course with Liz Postlethwaite this spring. It will take me a year to complete and along the way, I'm learning a lot of new things about regenerative systems and how to apply this to my practice and creative projects. I am just about getting into it now, after a slow, tentative, reluctant start as I discuss within this episode. I've been experiencing a fair about of conflict and tension about Permaculture and Permaculture Design basically because of its roots and their acknowledgment.  So within this beginning episode of a mini series around Permaculture Design, I discuss: * the difference between Permaculture and Permaculture Design * the purpose of Permaculture Design * the ethics and principles of Permaculture Design * the creation of the terms and concepts of Permaculture Design * the indigenous roots of Permaculture Design * the roots of my conflict and tensions with Permaculture Design * what to expect in the forthcoming episodes of the mini-series.    Keep an eye out on The Earth Sea Love Zine over on substack for more thinking and discussions around the issues raised and practices learnt throughout this mini series as well as the Permaculture Design Certificate course as a whole.

Eric is one of those wonderful people who gets stuff done!!!In this conversation I ask him about how he has grown his wildly successful Permaculture Artisans company that is regenerating landscapes from urban to rural, and even as we spoke in the process of informing the design of a permaculture agrihood. It's a wonderfully inspiring, uplifting and wide ranging conversation - spanning from with his early volunteering projects giving away gardens while cultivating huge social capital and skill development, to his current work, a his legacy book as he calls it, about to be released by Synergetic Press - the MASSIVE 550 page guide  - The Regenerative Landscaper: Design and Build Landscapes that Repair the Environment. This is going to become the go to manual and curriculum for permaculture learners who want to put into practice all they are learning in permaculture courses - it gets right into the nitty gritty and shows how to make it work!Towards the end, I ask Erik about his process of writing and feel entirely liberated in how I can now set about writing too. On this episode, permaculture expert and educator Andrew Millison joins us to unpack how we can better design our societal infrastructure and agriculture to be more attuned with the water, solar, and “geomorphic” conditions of our surroundings. When critical resources become scarce, it is more important than ever that communities learn to do more with less. By focusing on resiliency and stability through systems thinking, permaculture is a design system which does just that. In a world that often feels beyond our control, how can we use permaculture design to work with the land rather than against it, and regain agency in our local food, water, and social systems? About Andrew Millison: Andrew Millison is an innovative educator, storyteller and designer. He founded the Permaculture Design education program at Oregon State University (OSU) in 2009. At OSU Andrew serves as an Education Director and Senior Instructor who offers over 25 years of experience, and a playful approach to regenerative design. Andrew is also a documentary videographer who travels the world documenting epic permaculture projects in places such as India, Egypt, Mexico, Cuba, and throughout the US. Lisa Sardinia grew up in California, Nevada and Washington, moving nine times before graduating from high school. She attended Whitworth University in Spokane and received a B.S. in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. Then she moved to Bozeman, Montana, where she skied cross-country, climbed mountains, and rafted many rivers. And she also earned a Ph.D. in Microbiology, with a minor in Biochemistry, from Montana State University, studying the replication of coronaviruses. Following graduate school, she was awarded a National Cancer Institute research fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco studying molecular genetics. Then she began a teaching career, first at San Francisco State University, then at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. The west coast called, though, and she moved back to the Bay Area and enrolled at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where she earned a J.D. She clerked for a federal district court judge in San Francisco and worked in a patent law office in Palo Alto before coming to Pacific University. At Pacific, she taught a variety of classes in three colleges, from Microbiology to Companion Animal Science in the College of Arts and Sciences, Biochemistry and Genetics in the College of Optometry, and Human Genetics in the Physician Assistant Studies program. Her research with students has spanned a number fields, including the effect of essential oils and plant extracts on the growth of pathogenic bacteria, gene expression in paddlefish, microbiological analysis of freshwater streams in Chehalem Ridge Natural Area and wetlands at Fernhill Wetlands, and identification of native yeasts in samples collected throughout the fermentation process from a local winery. She was co-primary investigator for a $257,000 NIH grant—Faith Forum on Genetics: An ELSI Educational Intervention for Religious Communities. Her public scholarship activities include numerous Science Pub and Science on Tap presentations, as well as presentations to various professional and community groups on stem cell research and ethics, genetic testing, epigenetics, gut microbiota, and the biology of sex and gender. She served as Pacific's Faculty Athletics Representative for 20 years, including several years as a member of two national NCAA committees. She has been the Pre-Optometry Club advisor, the College of Arts & Sciences faculty chair, and the University Faculty Secretary. She enrolled in two Computer Science classes to prepare for a sabbatical leave spent developing a Bioinformatics major (and taking three Bioinformatics courses at OHSU). She has been the recipient of the Thomas J. and Joyce Holce Endowed Professorship in Science and the S.S. Johnson Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching. She lives on a small farm with her partner, John, her overly exuberant German Shepherd-Husky dog, Shasta, and her absurdly fluffy cat, Arlo. She spends her time on the farm trying to put into practice the principles she learned while earning a certificate in Permaculture Design through Pacific. All production by Cody Maxwell. Today, we will be discussing food autonomy and sustainable/ecological living based on Permaculture Design. These are topics that I have wanted to discuss in more detail for several months now.   TODAY'S CONVERSATION WITH JOEY EL-KHOURY What IS Permaculture Design? What does it include and can we achieve that in an optimum design? How a non-profit organization called ‘Gardens Without Borders' made a huge difference to countries in West Africa, Lebanon, Costa Rica and Ecuador. Why being responsible for our own food, and helping to regenerate the ecosystems is so vitally important to our health on this planet. How we can grow food sustainably at the local level with minimum input in terms of financial investment, infrastructure and technology. Is it possible to live as a society and meet our basic needs altogether, collectively within the natural limits of the ecosystems and the environment? Joey and I discuss what he believes are best practices for us as human beings to ensure that our planet is sustainable and here for many, many years. We talk about the nurturing of our freedom while at the same time nurturing solidarity, and what kinds of challenges will arise. Best ideas ever for a permaculture mindset. I think you will really enjoy these concepts as they fall in line with your belief patterns. We discuss the tools in the toolbox and potential solutions on different aspects from different dimensions of what it means to organize ourselves as a society. The top 3 reasons why I left the Middle East and moved my family to Panama.  Joey shares his top 3 most important ideas when it comes to self-sufficiency and moving forward in the coming years and why this topic is vital for the existence of our future. How you and your family can get back to basics and protect your individual freedom and be able to make changes in your life to become more sustainable and take more responsibility for yourself.
