6/7/2026 - Genesis 4:16-5:32 - Back To The Beginning: Left Out by Pastor Dennis Fountain
Cecil Maranville discusses Genesis 4:4-5, New Living Translation—“Abel also brought a gift—the best portions of the firstborn lambs from his flock. The LORD accepted Abel and his gift, but he did not accept Cain and his gift. This made Cain very angry, and he looked dejected.”
Today we continue our teaching series on Genesis. Genesis is a book of firsts, and in Genesis 4 today we see the first children born, the first agriculture developed, the first city founded. At the very same time, we also see the first messed up family, the first sibling rivalry, and the first murder. What’s wrong with this world, that it’s so messed up like this? And what can be done about it? Is culture & education & technology the way out? Or is it mixed up in the problem? Send us Fan MailIn this episode of The Two Trees Podcast, we explore the story of Cain in Genesis 4, asking what it means to bear God's image outside the Garden—and what happens when that calling is rejected. Tracing Cain's motives, his refusal to master sin, and his failure as both priest and brother, we examine how the ground itself becomes a witness to his rebellion and how exile shapes the biblical theme of wandering “east of Eden.” Yet even in judgment, God's unexpected grace appears in the mysterious “mark of Cain,” not as punishment but protection. This episode challenges us to look beyond the mark itself and wrestle with the deeper question at the heart of the story: why does Cain choose violence, and why does God extend mercy to the undeserving?

Cain is angry with Abel. So angry, he commits the first murder in history. This sin leads to another and then another with more murder, violence, vengeance, and polygamy that spread like wildfire in the ancient world. Where will it end? Hop aboard the Bible Bus and find out.

Send us Fan MailIn Episode 8 of Echoes of Eden, Tim and Steve explore one of the most misunderstood stories in Genesis: Cain and Abel. Was this story really about two offerings—or something much deeper? This episode uncovers the destructive power of envy, the danger of unchecked sin, and the profound question at the center of the text:“Am I my brother's keeper?”Through the lens of Genesis 4, we discover how this ancient story still speaks directly into modern life, relationships, justice, and the call to love our neighbor. In this episode: Why Cain and Abel is not mainly about offerings The difference between sins and the deeper power of sin How envy, bitterness, and resentment distort the human heart What “sin is crouching at the door” really means Why reconciliation matters to God The connection between loving God and loving your neighbor How this story challenges injustice, division, and indifference today This is a powerful conversation about repentance, restoration, and becoming people who reflect the way of Christ.
“You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.” (Genesis 4:7 NLT) Years ago, my son Christopher was lying out in the sun at our house when he woke up to find a huge gopher snake, coiled up and hissing at him, poised to strike. It must have been six or seven feet long. Terrified, he ran into the house and shut the door behind him. His experience reminds me of a hard truth about the Christian life. Like that gopher snake, sin is poised to strike—usually when we least expect it. And it’s been that way since the very beginning. When Cain saw that the Lord accepted Abel’s offering but not his, he was angry. So, God gave him a warning. He essentially told Cain what was going to happen to him if he didn’t get himself under control: “You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master” (Genesis 4:7 NLT). The passage portrays sin as a dangerous wild animal, always ready to pounce. The apostle Peter used similar imagery in his description of the devil in 1 Peter 5:8: “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour” (NLT). And while the imagery is certainly sobering, we need to keep these words of Scripture in proper perspective. It’s not so much an emergency broadcast warning as it is a word to the wise. Peter doesn’t tell us to panic, hide, or be afraid. He tells us to be alert. Our enemy isn’t all-powerful, but he is always watchful. He looks for opportunities to make us stumble, to make us doubt, to make us lose sight of the path God would have us travel. He attacks us when we’re weak—physically, emotionally, mentally, relationally. He also attacks us when we seem to be strong, after a spiritual victory or a “mountaintop” experience. In good times and bad, he keeps sin crouched at our door, ready to pounce. But we need not fear. As the psalmist wrote, “The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles” (Psalm 34:17 NLT). So, the next time sin comes knocking at your door, you might say, “Lord, would You mind getting that? I’m going to stand in Your strength. I’m going to trust in You. You are the only one who can give me the strength to overpower sin.” If we will master sin, then we must first be mastered by Him who mastered it. Reflection question: What types of sin often crouch at your door, poised to strike? "Envy causes the body of Christ to attack itself by viewing a brother's blessing as a personal offense."Welcome to week two of our series, The Hygiene of My Heart. This week, Charlie Grimes explores the deceptive pathogen of Envy—the "auto-immune disorder of the soul." Just as a physical illness can cause the body to turn on its own healthy tissue, envy causes us to see a "neighbor" as an "enemy" and a brother's success as our own failure. In this message, we examine:The Pathogen of Perspective: How looking "sideways" at others blinds us to God's goodness in our own lives. The Warning Signs: Recognizing the "downcast face" and the "silent resentment" that rots the bones. The Cain and Abel Case Study: Understanding how comparison can lead to a total systemic collapse of our relationships. The Hygiene Protocol: Practical "antibiotics" for the heart, including specific confession, the "Vitamin C" of contentment, and the exercise of celebration.Stop measuring your "field" against your brother's "altar." Join us as we ask the Great Physician to reset our spiritual immune systems and replace the bitterness of comparison with the soundness of contentment.Scripture References:Galatians 5:25–26Genesis 4:1–8Matthew 20:15Proverbs 14:30About This Series:The Hygiene of My Heart is an eight-week journey into what it takes to get our hearts clean and keep them clean. Derived from the Greek word Hygies, we are seeking to be "sound, healthy, and whole" in our spiritual walk.

We take a look at the story of Cain and Abel in today's sermon in our Genesis series. The post-fall narrative now focuses on Adam and Eve's sons, Cain and Abel. Despite God's persistence grace toward Cain, Cain remains obstinate in his pride and sin. While we might see ourselves as Abel in this story, a truer measure of our state is really more like Cain. Anger, bitterness, and resentment are eager to destroy us, and we often try to foster and hide these sins in empty religious acts and efforts. Yet, Jesus' blood speaks a better word and is eager to welcome and restore us if we but turn to Him.

Genesis 4 gives an account of the first murder. God gives us an explanation of bloodguilt as we see the contrast between the followers of God who respond to God in faith and the enemies of God who seek to cover their sin their own way.
Kendrick Diaz discusses Genesis 4:7—“If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”
In this episode we feature a talk by Paul Williams on Genesis 4. It's a talk which considers humanity's efforts to return to paradise, having been expelled from the garden of Eden. Even when the old man is crucified with Christ, sin still lurks at the door. There are ways to conquer it though.
Genesis 4 moves us out of the perfect garden and into a reality that looks exactly like our own world today. It is a world filled with family arguments, technological leaps, and the crushing pressure to achieve. In this message from the "Foundations" series, Pastor Adam Burton explores the story of Cain and Abel to reveal the two paths of humanity. You are either walking the way of Cain by trying to earn your place, or you are in the line of Seth by calling on the name of the Lord. Discover why willpower cannot break the chains of sin and how to trade your "resume virtues" for true legacy.

On Today's Show: Prager delves into the story of Cain and Abel, exploring the complexities of human nature and the nature of God. He examines the biblical account of Cain's punishment and the development of civilization, highlighting the importance of recognizing the value of every human being. Prager also discusses the concept of the "mark of Cain," which is often misunderstood as a negative mark, but is actually a sign of protection. He touches on the idea that we are all connected and that every human being is a whole world, and that this understanding is a key principle of Judaism.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
When Adam and Eve name their first son Cain, they naturally wonder if this is the promised Offspring of the woman. Cain's faithless offering and subsequent murder of his own brother Abel quickly reveal that Cain is not the Savior. In the aftermath of Cain's sin, the LORD remains gracious to him, placing a mark upon him. Yet Cain wanders away from the LORD's presence, and his family line only departs further from the LORD. Nonetheless, the LORD is faithful to His promise in Genesis 3 and gives Adam and Eve another son, Seth, through whom the promised Child will one day come. Rev. Harrison Goodman, Executive Director of Mission and Theology for Higher Things, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Genesis 4:1-26. To learn more about Higher Things, visit higherthings.org. “In the Beginning” is a series on Sharper Iron that studies Genesis. The first book of Moses sets the stage for God's entire story of salvation. As we learn the beginning of the story, God prepares us to receive the fulfillment of the story: Jesus Christ, the Offspring of the woman who has crushed our enemy's head. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org
Today’s Bible Verse: “At that time people began to call on the name of the Lord.” — Genesis 4:26 Genesis 4:26 marks a quiet but powerful turning point in Scripture—the moment when people intentionally began to seek the Lord. In a world already fractured by sin and sorrow, this verse highlights humanity’s response: calling on God in dependence, worship, and hope. “Want to listen without ads?
