Exalting the Stone _ Easter Sunday _ Matthew 28_1-10 by Cypress Bible Church
It's been said that if you put someone on a pedestal, they're likely to fall. But Dr. Tony Evans says that's not an issue for the one who created gravity. He begins a series on why Jesus deserves our honor, respect, and reverence—and how it changes us when we give it to Him.

Nehemiah 12:27-47 | Most versions of Nehemiah 12:27-47 have the heading “the dedication of the wall.” As this passage of scripture unfolds, we'll see much more than just a dedication of a wall, and much more than the celebration of an incredible accomplishment, but an all-out worship service to a sovereign God who always fulfills his promises. This morning we'll unpack four elements of corporate worship we see from this wall dedication, and how they impact the corporate worship gathering today.

Nehemiah 9-10 | God's people have been captivated by God's Word, and now they are under conviction. As Nehemiah 9 begins we find God's people gathered in sackcloth, fasting, and with earth on their heads. This is a solemn assembly. In the midst of this conviction, we see them express God-exalting contrite confession (ch. 9) and God-exalting resolute repentance (ch. 10). What bout their confession and repentance keeps God at the forefront and his glory their motivation? And what can we learn so our confession and repentance is driven more by the worship of God than by the wallowing in self? Let's get a glimpse of what God-exalting confession and repentance looks like in our life.
Preaching from Psalm 99:1-9, Pastor Randy reminded us this morning that God is worthy of our worship and praise and that He is a God of order, not of chaos.

Eli Hatcher's Funeral Reflection on preaching at the funeral of Eli Hatcher, an eight-year-old boy. The feeling of everyone expecting an answer to "why." Acknowledging the inability to explain certain things, like why young people die or why bad things happen to good people. Sustaining belief anchored in the blood of Jesus. Reliance on the grace of God and the Holy Spirit. Scripture References Mark 2:1 - Jesus in Capernaum, news spreading that he was in the house. Mark 9:33 - Jesus in Capernaum asking what the disciples were arguing about in the house. Mark 10:10 - Disciples asking Jesus about a matter in the house. Mark 14:3 - Jesus in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper. 2 Chronicles 5:14 - Priests unable to minister because the glory of the Lord filled the house of God. The Glory of God in the House Desire for God's glory. Moses' experience on the mountain, wanting to see God's glory. God allowed Moses to see a portion of His glory. Moses' face glowed, making it difficult for others to look at him. Comfort in God's promise to meet where two or three are gathered. The need for God's glory to change lives and save people. Solomon's dedication to building an elaborate temple for God's presence. Solomon's Preparation for God's Glory Assembling People came together, making an effort to be present. COVID-19 pandemic and church closures. Closing the church for five months was a mistake. Trusting God in the midst of uncertainty. Importance of physical presence in the church. Online streaming is beneficial for those unable to attend. Those who are part of the church should prioritize being there in person. Experiencing God in person. God is an "in-person kind of God." Nothing better than being in God's house. Looking forward to the Holy Ghost's presence. Talented singers and musicians in the congregation. The importance of God's presence over talent alone. Need for more of God, not more of the world. References to Jesus going into houses in the book of Mark. Woman with the issue of blood. When people gather and seek God, He will show up. Encouragement to attend services despite scheduling difficulties. Praying for those who listen online to be convicted and drawn to the church. Nehemiah and Ezra gathering people in the street, resulting in God's presence. God showing up in the midst of a "ragtag" group. Promise of God being in the midst when people gather. Sacrificing/Repenting King Solomon and the congregation sacrificed sheep and oxen. The need for repentance before God's glory can manifest. Acknowledging and repenting of sins. Living in sin alienates individuals from God's presence. Sacrifice of a broken heart and a contrite spirit. Sacrificing sheep and oxen. The number of sacrifices was so great it couldn't be counted. Sinful nature of people. Need for help to maintain fellowship with God. People choosing to live in sin and avoid the church. Feeling singled out by God when the glory falls. Encouragement to return to church and then get right with God. The Holy Ghost doesn't play favorites or mess around with sin. Being present is not enough; sacrifice is necessary. Compromise with sin drains the power of churches. Turning and repenting is the only response to sin. Desire to see people get right with God during worship. Strategic surgery to remove things that hinder fellowship with God. Placing the Promises of God in the Rightful Place The priests brought in the Ark of the Covenant. The Ark contained the tables of stone (Word of God). After repentance, the promises of God should be honored. The Word of God should be the highest priority. The reason God calls men is so there could be no boasting. Exalting the Word of God. The Word of God is above all.

Sometimes, life has a way of shaking us awake from our spiritual complacency. It happened to me, Pastor Steve Gray, in my early 40s when I realized that despite following every rule and doing everything "right," I felt unfulfilled. This revelation led me to a transformative journey of studying biblical principles more deeply, and I'm excited to share these insights with you in our latest episode of the More Faith, More Life podcast. We explore the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, a story that challenges our understanding of humility and self-righteousness in faith. In this episode, we delve into the vivid dynamics of the temple atmosphere where public prayers often masked self-righteousness. We examine the stark contrast between the Pharisee, who was confident in his own piety, and the tax collector, who humbly sought God's mercy. Through their stories, we unravel the deeper message from Jesus about the essence of true righteousness. This narrative encourages us to look beyond the surface and confront tendencies within our faith that may lead to judgment rather than compassion.Key Takeaways:The parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector emphasizes the importance of humility and recognition of one's need for divine mercy for true justification.Cultural context influences the understanding of biblical stories; knowing the circumstances of the time enhances comprehension of their teachings.Exalting oneself in spirituality mirrors the fall of Lucifer, making humility a godly characteristic.Self-righteousness can blind individuals from receiving God's forgiveness and grace, as illustrated by the Pharisee's attitude.God values contrition and humility, rewarding those who acknowledge their spiritual dependence on Him.

Segment 1 • Contemporary worship on YouTube is flooded with emotionally charged, man-centered music that feels more exhausting than edifying. • Much of today's worship music centers on emotionalism, not exalting Christ. • When you hear biblically rich, Christ-centered lyrics like “The King in All His Beauty,” it's clear—true worship exalts Jesus, not emotion, experience, or self. Segment 2 • Churches are increasingly turning to recycled pop songs and rebranding them as worship music, blurring the lines between sacred and secular. • The Catholic Church prepares for its next conclave this week which will select the new Pope. • The bizarre tradition of showcasing the literal hearts of former popes—raising questions about relic worship and pagan parallels. Segment 3 • “Side B Christianity,” which affirms same-sex attraction as identity but forbids action, is gaining ground in some corners of the PCA. • The PCUSA has already shifted further, redefining missions as “whatever God is doing” and eliminating its missionary department entirely. • Why our identity must be found in Christ, not our sinful proclivities. Segment 4 • Odd stories from around the world–”Florida ants are the only animals besides humans that perform surgery.” • Alpharetta Bible Church's gospel-centered mission serves as a touchstone amid cultural confusion. • Despite rising pornography use, the DSM-5 still contains no diagnostic category for it—underscoring how secular frameworks often ignore deep spiritual issues. – Preorder the new book, Lies My Therapist Told Me, by Fortis Institute Fellow Dr. Greg Gifford now! https://www.harpercollins.com/pages/liesmytherapisttoldme – Thanks for listening!
