Diet soda is a big business. It has been for decades. Today, everyone loves Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi. But they weren't the first, not even close. Coke first gave us Tab. Pepsi offered the short-lived Patio. However, the first brand that paved the way for artificially sweetened soft drinks was created by RC Cola in the 50s. It was called Diet Rite. I say 'was", because Dr Pepper/Keurig, the company that most recently owned the brand, has quietly pulled the plug. It started regionally in 1958 and went nationwide in 1962. Within a year, it was the fourth best-selling soda brand behind Coke, Pepsi, and RC... Which Diet Cola is best? Sodas with alternative sugars are becoming more popular all the time as it presents a way for the consumer to drink their beloved sodas, while still feeling good about themselves because they just consumed a calorie free beverage. Although health benefits are much more complicated than a calorie counter, here at Taste Test Dummies we fully endorse the "pretend this is good for me" methodology. With this wishful thinking in mind, we will try out 4 Diet Colas this week. The contenders are Diet Coke, Diet Faygo, Diet Pepsi, and Diet Rite. Please like and subscribe and if you have any suggestions, let us know by tweeting us @tastetestdummies or email us at nickandjohnpodcast@gmail.com. SPOILER! Below is a list of which soda corresponds to which numbered cup it was in: 1. Pepsi 2. Faygo 3. Diet Rite 4. Coke
I know I know. I covered some of this stuff in Season 2. Well, I'm not done covering it, so sit back, kick off your Roos and pop open a Diet Rite while I dissect and poke fun at some classic 80s movies that became not-so-classic 80s TV shows. We'll explore the cast of Ferris Bueller and how they couldn't fill the shoes of the O.G. cast. I'll try and explain the rationale behind Ron Howard's Gung Ho being made into a sitcom while also scratching my head at Dirty Dancing's foray into television. We will finally make Joaquin Phoenix go head to head with Leo DiCaprio as we discuss Parenthood's first dip in the TV pool and I'll wrap things up by celebrating arguably the greatest young cast in movie history, the stars of Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Aloha!
Everyone knows they changed it in 1985 to New Coke. But how many know of the other four times? And one of those might be considered a public duping. To get the answer today's story covers Thomas Edison, Cocaine, Kola Nut, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Robert Gozuieta, Fanta, Tab, Diet Rite, Robert Woodruff, Atlanta's Jewish Community, Royal Crown Cola and just maybe the show The Walking Dead.

Emily Belden, author of "Hot Mess," jumps in the Madza 3 for a new episode (sponsored by Boost Mobile). We got tacos from El Potosi (Spanish for "The Potosi") this week. Spoiler warning: Not so much. We also talked about: El Potosi had some confusing items in the cooler, including not-for-sale Coronas and a sheet cake. Emily's new book, "Hot Mess": About a Chicago woman who suddenly finds herself entangled with an up-and-coming, bad boy, chef... who maybe has a drug issue. Chicago's restaurant scene, specifically in the Randolph Street area, which plays a part in "Hot Mess." The locale of El Potosi couldn't be further removed from the settings of "Hot Mess." Emily does the "basic white girl thing" when ordering tacos. The Facebook Live video of this week's recording had a variety of fascinating viewers, including punk legends Jeff Pezzati (Naked Raygun) and Denis Buckley (88 Fingers Louie/Three-time podcast guest), radio god Kevin Matthews and culinary kingpin Ben Randall (In the Weeds with Ben Randall). RC is the cousin of Diet Rite, and Diet Rite is one step above Faygo. Emily's start as a blogger. No one blogs anymore. Emily's tenacity and perseverance, which led to her becoming a published author with "Eightysixed." How does Emily know when a book is "done?" How much of Emily is reflected in the book? Writing about addiction: "That's not something you just wing." What's an amuse-bouche? Emily's literary "voice." "Hot Mess" was not the first name for the book. "Has Hollywood been sniffing around?" "... I think it's going to be a TV series." Emily's upcoming book, "Husband Material." It's not about animal husbandry.
