Today we're taking you to the charming little town of New Glarus, Wisconsin (pop. 2,208) where craftsmanship, community, and a whole lot of heart come together. I'm sitting down with Tim and Morgann Boettner of A Well Worn Story, a husband and wife team with a business that's all about high-quality, handcrafted leather and canvas goods. What started with just $5,000 and some spare time has grown into something truly special — a blend of online hustle and a brick-and-mortar storefront where they make everything by hand.In this episode, we're diving into their journey: how they expanded from an online shop to opening a storefront with a workshop in the back, the way they've curated a space that's as beautiful as their products, and why balancing online and in-store sales has been a winning combo for them. We'll talk about their new private-label collaborations with other small businesses, how customer feedback sparked fresh ideas for their product line, and why they're so passionate about the slow fashion movement — because quality matters. Tim and Morgann are also sharing the keys to their longevity in business, how they've teamed up as husband and wife to make it all work, and what's changed in New Glarus since we last caught up. From their love for historic buildings to the wild adventure of entrepreneurship, they're keeping it real — staying true to their brand, their values, and their faith. Their story is a testament to the power of quality, adaptability, and staying true to who you are, all while building something that lasts in a world that's always changing!Check out more on the blog.SHOW NOTESNew Glarus, WisconsinNew Glarus BrewingFOLLOW A WELL WORN STORYINSTAGRAMFACEBOOKPINTERESTWEBSITEFARM DINNER EVENT KITIf you're thinking about hosting your own farm or ranch dinner this summer, our Farm Dinner Event Kit has everything you need! In this episode Dan and Scott discuss the two brand new beers New Glarus put out this month; Imperial Pilsner and Tailwagger Amber. Cheers!
The craft beer industry is at an inflection point. Many upstart breweries have shuttered not long after opening, and even some of the original stars of the craft beer scene have gone bottoms-up in the last couple years. But one of the original craft breweries and most famous is doubling down. New Glarus, brewers of Spotted Cow, Moon Man and some of the most appreciated beers in the country, announced plans in October to build a $55 million, 65,000 square-foot addition to its campus. Founders Deb and Dan Carey join Myles Dannhausen Jr. to talk about the expansion, Dan's 40-year beer-making journey, and of course, why New Glarus beer is only sold in Wisconsin.
Your hosts return this week with their favorite type of episode: the Deep Dive. This one focuses on the Wisconsin sweethearts at New Glarus Brewing. It is a beautiful history of family, community, and passion that just might be the best story in modern-day craft beer. Also, Jason swears off Total Wine and Stephen causes social media drama. Beer Tastings: Jason - Belgian Red, New Glarus Brewing, New Glarus, WI. Style: Fruit Beer Stephen - Western Justice, Westbound and Down Brewing, LaFayette, CO. Style: BBA Imperial Stout
Barry and Abigail discuss Christmas Cheers by Straight No Chaser and sample Spotted Cow and Moon Man from New Glarus Brewing Co. in New Glarus, Wisconsin, and Pickle Tickle from Barn Town Brewing in West Des Moines, Iowa. Listen to the original ¿Dónde Esta Santa Claus? by Augie Rios Barry compared the harmonies in I'll Be Home for Christmas to the harmonies in Auld Lang Syne by The Beach Boys (who were in turn inspired by The Lettermen's harmonies). We played the original Hey Santa! by The Brian Setzer Orchestra. Read the story behind the writing of Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The definitive version of You're a Mean One, Mister Grinch for Barry is The Whirling Dervishes' version, whereas for Abigail, it is the full version from the original TV special, sung by Thurl Ravenscroft. We compared Straight No Chaser's version of O Holy Night to the Tracy Chapman version and the Céline Dion version. Read more about the Christmas pickle tradition! We confirmed that “upsot” is indeed in the original lyrics of Jingle Bells! We also played a little bit of our favorite version of the song, by Bing Crosby and The Andrews Sisters. Who Spiked the Eggnog? is only Abigail's second-favorite eggnog-based Christmas song, after Eggnogorant by Terry Anderson & The Olympic Ass-Kickin Team, which you can hear on our first-ever Christmas bonus episode from 2021, Bonus: Greet the Hummels! Original Songs by Friends of the Pod! We played a bit of Straight No Chaser's version of Carol of the Bells. Up next… Who's Next by The Who, submitted to our Jukebox by Todd Sider. This episode, our Season 5 opener, is scheduled to drop on March 7, 2025. Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition. The boys are back from their quick trip to ChicagoLand where they tackled an overwhelming list of breweries and beers, much to the detriment of their livers. Join them as they recap the trip and its many highlights. Also, Texas Beer Fest preview and bottle share stories. Beer Tastings: Jason - BA French Toast, Hubbard's Cave Brewing, Niles, IL. Style: Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout with Cinnamon, Vanilla, and Maple Syrup. Stephen - Milk Chocolate Stout, New Glarus Brewing, New Glarus, WI. Style: Milk Stout
Welcome back to The DC Beer Show! This week, our hosts Michael Stein, Jacob Berg, and Brandy Holder take you on a flavorful journey with brewery aficionado Joel Geier. Renowned for his extensive "brewery travels," Joel shares his adventures and insights from visiting a staggering 1,367 breweries across all 50 states, and yes, that includes our very own Washington D.C.!Joel's new book, "Flights Across America" will be out December 17 and is available for pre-order now.Joel kicks off by reminiscing about his early love for craft beer, sparked by his father's influence and further ignited during his college years. His move to Oregon with his wife opened new beer horizons, and their subsequent relocation to Milwaukee became a springboard for documenting his brewery escapades via his popular Twitter account, "brewery travels."Ever wonder what it's like to dive into the craft beer scenes across America? Joel's wife, working as a travel nurse, allowed them to crisscross the country, pushing his brewery counts through the roof. They've lived in 14 states over 9 years, each stint providing new local brewery experiences. Joel's dedication led to his first book, "Flights Across America," where he showcases over 400 brewery visits expanded to include an awesome 200 breweries in Wisconsin alone!Did you know Joel's kids tag along on these beer quests? That's right, he's a big advocate for responsibly managed kid-friendly taprooms, sharing touching stories of family outings with breweries providing inclusive, family-centric atmospheres. As the conversation flows, Joel spills his Milwaukee favorites—shoutout to the affordable and varied beers from Lakefront and 3rd Space, the latter celebrated for its wins at the Great American Beer Festival. And who can forget the beloved New Glarus beers? It's not just about the brews; Joel appreciates the historical and community fervor attached to each taproom and brewski stop. His methodical approach to note-taking and storytelling keeps listeners hanging on every word. The hosts also dive into upcoming DC beer events that you won't want to miss. They hype up trivia nights at Other Half, celebrate Right Proper's 11th anniversary with a diverse lineup of events, and the infectious festive vibes at Wheatland Spring holiday markets complete with live music. And don't forget to grab your tickets to the 12 Beers of Christmas at Metro Bar!They even touch on a poignant story of entrepreneurial spirit and community support: Avery Swanson's quest to open her brewery amidst financial setbacks, with a fundraiser pouring Keeping Together beers at the Sovereign.Lastly, our hosts chat about their drink picks, Jacob's beer trade tales, and passionate sips from favorite brews. They leave you with a heartfelt nudge to contribute to the DC beer scene through their Patreon, nurturing the metro area's craft beer culture. So, pour yourself a frothy pint, kick back, and hop aboard another enriching episode of The DC Beer Show! Cheers!
We've made it through Halloween and and the Holiday beers are already on the shelves. Here is Atlanta we're still seeing temps in the 80s. It's hard to get too excited for a Belgian quad when it's still t-shirt weather. The beers releases through the last few months of the year are some of our favorites. Let's cool it down so we can break them out!As pseudo-foodies we were excited (mostly me) for the Michelin awards to return to Atlanta this week. We got 4 new 1-star restaurants but overall it was a bit underwhelming. So many great people in craft beer that had to be tough to come up with. You can't have everyone in the 1st year, then where do you go? Nevertheless, they've got a solid group to get things started. Some good beer newsIn light of all the closures it was nice to see New Glarus is in the process of a $55 Million expansion. Sounds like they are doing OK. Episode 159: Hosts Scott Rada and Rick Kyte discuss the growing trend of Americans moving less frequently and their own experiences with putting down roots. Rada, who moved frequently as a child, and Kyte, who spent his entire childhood in the small town of Frazee, Minnesota, reflect on the pros and cons of living in one community for over 20 years. Kyte explains that the advantages of staying put include developing deep connections within the local area and getting to know the community exceptionally well. In contrast, Rada's more transient upbringing may have provided him with different skills, though he acknowledges the challenges of being the "new kid" when moving to a new place. The hosts explore how modern comforts and technology have made it easier for people to remain in one location, potentially impacting professional ambition and community engagement. They also highlight an innovative housing project in New Glarus, Wisconsin, that is designed to foster a sense of neighborhood and support for residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Jim Rutledge and Matt Hamilton get in their feeling today by talking about the most annoying fanbase in the NFC North. Running off a topic from this morning's Unsportsmanlike about annoying fanbases, where Chris Canty and Michelle Smallmon said that Packers fans are well-deserving of their confidence as fans. Jim and Matt spar over whether the Bears or the Packers fanbase is actually more annoying. Evan Cohen of Unsportsmanlike then joins the show to mediate this annoying debate! Evan re-hashes some memories of Florida Jim and re-lives some of his own most athletic memories in the student newspaper football game at the University of (just) Madison? Evan also claims that Lions fans are actually the most annoying fans in the NFC North after two years of unprecedented franchise success. Jim let's Evan know his prediction for Caleb Williams' record-setting first season as the Bears QB, and his Evan is unimpressed. They also discuss which QB will have a better statistical, and potential MVP, season: Jordan Love or Caleb Williams. They wrap Hour 1 with the High Life Dive Bar of the Week: Sportsman Bar & Grill in New Glarus!

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains, with R&D Vintage 2023, from New Glarus Brewing. Guest host Jane picked this 1982 picture starring Diane Lane as a young woman dealt a series of devastating, life altering blows in a short amount of time. She takes her sister and cousin on the road with a couple bands and creates a movement. There's some great music from punk legends, who also play roles in the film. I paired it with a New Glarus award receiving sour, that is one hell of a good time.
Hans Lenzlinger immigrated from Switzerland to the United States to work as a cook in Chicago. Eventually, Hans moved to New Glarus where he eventually took over the New Glarus Hotel and became an initial investor in the New Glarus Brewing Company. Cheers!
In this episode, Dan and Scott crack a Kid Kölsch and talk about the history of the style, how this beer was named, and everything else Kölsch. They also get into the complete update and overhaul in New Glarus' fermentation cellars at its Hilltop Brewery! Cheers!
In this episode, Scott sits down with Chuck Bigler, owner of Puempel's Olde Tavern in New Glarus. Puempel's has been a continuously operating tavern in New Glarus since the late 1800s and Chuck is a fount of knowledge about all things New Glarus. The tavern has a rich history which Chuck will proudly tell you about if you stop in for a beer. Cheers!
Don's Bio, From the time he was born, the odds seemed stacked against Don Wickstrum. He was always fighting. Always scratching and clawing. He was the perpetual underdog. That took on new meaning when he got the worst news possible: cancer. At that moment, he was forced to confront the question, “What would you do if you had a year to live?” How Don answered that question led to a whole new life – a life he only dreamed of since a young age. Today, he's telling that story all around the world in a captivating way, both in person and through the dramatic documentary of his life called “Chasing Hope.” From the age of eight, Don had a vivid dream: to make it to the top of one of the most well-known mountains in the continental United States while going as fast as he could in a race car. He never envisioned the nightmare of a cancer diagnosis would make his childhood dream a reality. In 2018, Don heard the words that so many people dread: “You have cancer.” As someone who had struggled with anxiety and depression in the past, his colon cancer diagnosis and especially the subsequent fight took its toll. But as he and his family prayed and created a game plan for treatment, something else started emerging: resolve. As he stared down the real possibility of death, Don remembered something that had always been on his bucket list: his childhood dream of racing to the top of Pike's Peak, one of Colorado's famed “14ers.” Drawing on his newfound resolve as well as his strong faith in Jesus, he decided to pursue the Pike's Peak International Hill Climb, considered one of the deadliest races in America. It took everything he had just to attempt it – let alone complete it. After several failed attempts, in 2022 he tamed the full mountain – with its 156 turns over a 12.42-mile course – all while battling cancer. His spiritual convictions and racing prowess earned him the nickname, “Fastest Pastor.” That's ironic, considering Don spent much of his young life identifying as an atheist, which gave way to his belief in Jesus after he fully pursued the evidence. His life story, as well as his racing legacy, was captured in the 2022 I Am Second film called “Chasing Hope.” Before Wickstrum – born in Illinois and raised in Wisconsin – became a racing legend, though, he was a successful entrepreneur, building and leading one of the biggest robotics integration companies in the country. That journey started when he got an engineering internship in college, which he admits he had no business getting. He sold his booming business after his cancer diagnosis to pursue his dream of racing and reaching people with a message of hope. Today, Don is passionate about bringing that message to whoever will listen as he travels the country speaking. He draws on his life experience to show that overcoming your past is possible through the help of Jesus Christ. Those experiences include being told by his doctors he would not make it after birth, surviving multiple sexual assault attempts, dyslexia, the death of a close family member, mental health struggles, building a multi-million dollar business, creating a ministry, being a family man, his own failures, and even family betrayal. Don resides in Monroe, WI, with his wife, Mary, and their five children. While not racing and speaking, he serves as the associate pastor of Grace Church in New Glarus, WI. You can read more about Don's current work at fastestpastor.com.

Season 4 is here! To kick it off, we've got a 2-parter for you with Rob Schenck, a former Washington insider and heavy hitter in the evangelical Christian lobbying industry. His story is featured in the Emmy Award-winning 2016 documentary The Armor of Light. In Part 1, we speak with Rob about his background, his anti-abortion activism, and how his views have evolved on that issue. Part 2 will focus on evangelical gun culture and its consistency with a pro-life ethic. The beverage featured in this episode is New Glarus Pilsner.
