Alison and Amanda talk about possible game show glory, getting the right golf getup, and going the extra mile for their men. In an age of overwhelmingly dumb AI that is constantly shoved in our faces, it's nice to remember a time when we still thought AI and robotics had a chance to make our lives better. In 1999, author and futurist Ray Kurzweil wrote a book called "The Age of Spiritual Machines", in which he predicts AI reaching a point where it has it's own consciousness. In this future, AI will have already cured disease and improved the human condition, but as it grows in sentience and gains rights, humanity (as we know it) slowly becomes obsolete. This isn't portrayed as a bad thing as much as just a new step in evolution with artificial life gaining spirituality... But after reading Kurzweil's book, Our Lady Peace took issue with a few things. In their 2000 album, "Spiritual Machines", they take on the complicated nature of humanity, exploring experiences that are uniquely human, such as having an out of body experience, or gaining wisdom out of negative life experiences. There's a lot of great thoughts in the album and they don't sound half bad to boot!Aaaaand for today's guest for this Canadian alt rock group is a Canadian (in her own right), Danielle MacQuarrie!!! And don't worry Wisconsinites, we proposed the idea of seceding to Canada and Danielle is going to bring it up with The Prime Minister! This week the boys drink a Wisconsin special: Spotted Cow. While making fun of some of the craziest things the United States has spent money on. Would you be able to guess the price? Listen in to find out.
The craft beer industry is at an inflection point. Many upstart breweries have shuttered not long after opening, and even some of the original stars of the craft beer scene have gone bottoms-up in the last couple years. But one of the original craft breweries and most famous is doubling down. New Glarus, brewers of Spotted Cow, Moon Man and some of the most appreciated beers in the country, announced plans in October to build a $55 million, 65,000 square-foot addition to its campus. Founders Deb and Dan Carey join Myles Dannhausen Jr. to talk about the expansion, Dan's 40-year beer-making journey, and of course, why New Glarus beer is only sold in Wisconsin.
Barry and Abigail discuss Christmas Cheers by Straight No Chaser and sample Spotted Cow and Moon Man from New Glarus Brewing Co. in New Glarus, Wisconsin, and Pickle Tickle from Barn Town Brewing in West Des Moines, Iowa. Listen to the original ¿Dónde Esta Santa Claus? by Augie Rios Barry compared the harmonies in I'll Be Home for Christmas to the harmonies in Auld Lang Syne by The Beach Boys (who were in turn inspired by The Lettermen's harmonies). We played the original Hey Santa! by The Brian Setzer Orchestra. Read the story behind the writing of Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The definitive version of You're a Mean One, Mister Grinch for Barry is The Whirling Dervishes' version, whereas for Abigail, it is the full version from the original TV special, sung by Thurl Ravenscroft. We compared Straight No Chaser's version of O Holy Night to the Tracy Chapman version and the Céline Dion version. Read more about the Christmas pickle tradition! We confirmed that “upsot” is indeed in the original lyrics of Jingle Bells! We also played a little bit of our favorite version of the song, by Bing Crosby and The Andrews Sisters. Who Spiked the Eggnog? is only Abigail's second-favorite eggnog-based Christmas song, after Eggnogorant by Terry Anderson & The Olympic Ass-Kickin Team, which you can hear on our first-ever Christmas bonus episode from 2021, Bonus: Greet the Hummels! Original Songs by Friends of the Pod! We played a bit of Straight No Chaser's version of Carol of the Bells. Up next… Who's Next by The Who, submitted to our Jukebox by Todd Sider. This episode, our Season 5 opener, is scheduled to drop on March 7, 2025. Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition. Pour Another Round heads across the pond and visits with Yvan from Brasserie de la Senne in Brussels, Belgium. Yvan is a passionate brewer and brewery owner and brings you the Brussels People's Beer! In our very first episode from Belgium, Yvan talks with us about quality and the desire to always do better. From the beginning, Brasserie de la Senne has brewed bitter beers - bitterness is the key characteristic of their beers. Why? They wanted to brew beers to their liking that could no longer be found on the market. You'll also find really solid low alcohol beers at Brasserie de la Senne (no N/As though!). The Taras Boulba (4.5%) is “the” beer for quenching your thirst and you still get amazing flavor!Brasserie de la Senne takes great pride in being a local brewery and focused on the Brussels region through and through. Exports are limited, however, their beers are available in a dozen countries, with a leading presence in the United States, Italy and Japan. Greetings from Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport! Always love flying back to the Badger State where the Spotted Cow tastes just as good as I remember and team president Mark Murphy essentially built an entirely new town around Lambeau Field. (Great work, Mark.) It was a very busy week of reporting for future stories at Go Long in Green Bay, Wisc. — make sure you're subscribed to read ‘em all. But before heading to the airport to fly back to Western New York, I recorded this Substack Live with Peter Bukowski of “The Leap” and the Locked On Packers podcast. We try to make a little more sense of the mess in Chicago and what the Bears could do to make Caleb Williams' life easier. Also, will we witness another second-half surge out of Jordan Love? The Packers sure hope so.This was fun. As a reminder, you can download the Substack app here to catch these impromptu videos with fellow Substackers live:Miss our feature today? I caught up again with Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin. He's come a long way from nobody recognizing him at Elmo's for chicken wings as a rookie. Hamlin opens up more on the night he died and came back to life. His comeback represents the beauty of the sport.Thank you for reading, subscribing and sharing, everyone. This is a public episode. In this episode, Dan, Deb, and Scott continue their conversation around the 30th anniversary of New Glarus Brewing. They talk dealing with wholesalers, Spotted Cow becoming what it is, building the new Hilltop Brewery, and much, much more. Cheers!
We're excited to try this Farmhouse Ale from Wisconsin. It's, award winning, highly rated, and highly sought after; so we think we'll be over the moon for it. Thank you to Carrington for bringing it by our studio! No matter how good this Swill is, Bryan will always find something to say--but it's not about the flavor of the beer this time. Join us for another good time and great insight on this beer!
In 2002, Wisconsin's New Glarus Brewing Company, makers of the beloved Spotted Cow farmhouse ale, announced it'd be pulling out of the Illinois market next door. Six months later, it was gone. The decision shocked and even angered some folks on the wrong side of the Cheddar Curtain, and flew in the face of the contemporary expansionist wisdom of that era in the industry. But brewmaster Daniel Carey simply couldn't brew enough to keep up with the demand in the state next door, so along with his wife, founder and president Deb, they decided not to. Twenty years later, we spoke to Daniel about how New Glarus grew on its own terms, and became a touchstone for an industry looking for ways to sustainably retrench as growth slows in the process.
