On this episode of Pilot Season Cartoon Edition, hosts Kinte, Renee, Jen, John, and Allen break down the pilot episode of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (1983), “The Cobra Strikes,” which originally aired on September 12, 1983. It was the opening chapter of the first five-part miniseries, The M.A.S.S. Device.   In this opening episode, the elite G.I. Joe team is called into action when Cobra launches a bold plan involving the powerful M.A.S.S. Device, a machine capable of instant matter transportation. As Cobra begins moving against military targets and global security, the Joes are forced into a high-stakes battle that introduces the core conflict, the major players, and the fast-paced military sci-fi style that would define the series.   This episode sets the tone for the franchise with action, espionage, advanced technology, and the classic battle between G.I. Joe and Cobra.    Podcast airdate: 6/17/26. John 7.8 Allen 10 Jen  10 Kinte 8 Olaf 8.5 Total: 36.5      #GIJoe #PilotSeasonCartoonEdition #ARealAmericanHero Brief history G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (1983) was produced by Sunbow Productions and Marvel Productions in partnership with Hasbro as part of the 1980s wave of toy-based action cartoons. The animated series helped launch and promote the relaunched G.I. Joe toy line by giving it an ongoing story centered on the battle between the G.I. Joe team and the terrorist organization Cobra. The first animated version began with the 1983 miniseries The M.A.S.S. Device, and the success of those early episodes helped turn G.I. Joe into one of the defining action cartoons of the decade.   Short cast list: Michael Bell — Duke, Major Bludd, Xamot Christopher Collins — Cobra Commander Neil Ross — Shipwreck, Buzzer B.J. Arsenal return to the Emirates for what  is framed as “game one of five,” with the title race entering its decisive stretch. With Manchester City moving ahead on goals scored, the context is clear: results are now everything, but the debate remains around how Arsenal should approach these final matches. The episode opens with a look at the weekend's Premier League fixtures, including Sunderland vs Nottingham Forest and Wolves vs Tottenham, before attention turns fully to Arsenal's clash with Newcastle. The discussion sets the stakes around form, league position, and the pressure building on both sides heading into the fixture.Focus then shifts to the title race dynamic, including the impact of Manchester City's narrow win at Burnley and the implications for goal difference. From there, the hosts explore two contrasting tactical approaches — whether Arsenal should prioritise control and simply secure wins, or adopt a more aggressive, attacking mindset to maximise goal output.Team news and availability are assessed in detail, with injuries and doubts affecting both squads. Newcastle's absentees are outlined alongside Arsenal's ongoing concerns, including key players nearing returns and how that may shape selection decisions. The conversation moves into a detailed lineup debate, with particular attention on the right wing and left wing roles, and how Arsenal can best structure their attack. Kai Havertz's role is examined closely, including the argument for his importance across the remaining fixtures, while wider discussion considers attacking output, squad balance, and the impact of personnel on overall system performance. There is also a deeper look at Arsenal's pressing structure, highlighting the roles of Martin Ødegaard, Kai Havertz and Declan Rice in regaining control higher up the pitch, as well as how build-up play has been affected by absences in key areas such as fullback. The episode closes with reflections on what Arsenal need to deliver in this match, followed by an update on Mikel Merino's recovery timeline and whether he could feature again before the end of the season. One game at a time — the run-in starts here.Chapters:(00:00) - Arteta's Non-Negotiables & Intro(00:18) - Show Overview & Newcastle Preview Setup(00:55) - Farewell Liam(01:48) - Who Am I Game(03:44) - Predictions Game: Sunderland vs Nottingham Forest(06:18) - Wolves vs Tottenham(09:49) - Arsenal vs Newcastle: Match Context & Stakes(11:17) - Title Race Pressure & “Game One of Five”(12:52) - Man City Result & Goal Difference Context(15:30) - Tactical Approach Debate: Control vs Gung Ho(18:33) - Team News: Injuries & Newcastle Absentees(21:04) - Lineup Debate: Right Wing Options(25:19) - Havertz Role & Must-Start Argument(27:44) - Left Wing Debate: Eze, Trossard & Jesus Options(31:15) - Squad Structure & Attacking Output Concerns(33:51) - System vs Personnel: Getting Best Players on Pitch(35:48) - Timber, Calafiori & Build-Up Importance(38:54) - Newcastle Links & Transfer Discussion(41:46) - Pressing Structure: Ødegaard, Havertz & Rice Roles(44:02) - Declan Rice Role & Final Third Impact(45:43) - Closing Thoughts & Match Expectations(46:17) - Merino Injury Update Discussion(48:27) - Outro

This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes take on "Gung Ho", the workplace comedy that blends culture clash with 80s charm. Both Mike Butler and Mike Field enjoy the film for its humor and overall fun factor, but they agree it comes with some noticeable issues. Michael Keaton carries the movie almost entirely on charisma and charm, as his character does not have a particularly strong arc and seems to change in the third act simply because the story demands it, rather than earning that growth. The Mikes also take issue with George Wendt's character, who comes off as one of the film's true villains. He is consistently ungrateful and disruptive, yet faces no real consequences and does not learn any meaningful lesson by the end. In contrast, Kazihiro is a much more compelling character, someone you want to root for, though the film leaves a lot of his personal story unexplored, especially when it comes to his family and transition to life in the United States. The ending is another sticking point. Instead of feeling earned, it leans on a convenient resolution where characters essentially pretend success into existence, rather than working toward a believable payoff. Still, the Mikes acknowledge that this may partly come down to modern expectations. Looking back at a film from a simpler era, where the focus was more on comedy than airtight storytelling, changes how it lands today.Despite its flaws, "Gung Ho" remains an enjoyable and easy watch, driven by Keaton's performance and a steady stream of laughs. What's your favorite 80's workplace comedy?

This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Dan back on the show to discuss the 1986 comedy Gung Ho.  In this culture clash Opie farce, Batman and Long Duck Dong try to get Norm and Jesus to build them some cars, all while trying to show why America sucks and Japan is awesome.  This is standard 80s movie magic.  Will they meet their car quota?  Will Japan recognize how great American workers are?  Should Norm have been barred from softball for life, with this blatant baserunning violence?  All these questions and less will be discussed.  Enjoy the podcast!Jason, Andy and Dana will discuss a 1986 movie weekly, breaking down all the nonsense there within. New Year Of Intentions, Nertz to Resolutions. Why start the year lying? Every day may not be good, but there is something good in every day.       -Alice Morse Earle- Let's get anti-inflammatory!  Drinking hot lemon water in the morning is a popular ritual that offers several practical health benefits, though it is often surrounded by some common myths. While it isn't a "miracle cure," it is an excellent way to kickstart your body's essential functions. Myth vs. Reality The Claim The Reality "It detoxes your body." Your liver and kidneys handle detoxing 24/7. Lemon water doesn't "flush" toxins, but its hydrating effect helps your kidneys filter waste more easily. "It melts fat/boosts metabolism." There is no evidence that lemon water directly burns fat. However, it can help with weight management by replacing high-calorie drinks or reducing hunger before a meal. "It alkalizes your blood." While lemon juice is alkalizing after metabolism, it cannot change the pH level of your blood (which is strictly regulated by your body). ADD The Anti-Inflammatory Duo: Turmeric & Black Pepper Turmeric is famous for curcumin, a compound with powerful anti-inflammatory effects. However, curcumin is notoriously difficult for the body to absorb on its own. The Science: Adding a pinch of black pepper contains piperine, which has been shown to increase curcumin absorption by up to 2,000%. Goal: Reducing joint pain and systemic inflammation. How to add: 1/4 tsp turmeric powder + a crack of fresh black pepper. 2. The Digestive Aid: Fresh Ginger Ginger contains gingerol, which has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It's particularly effective at soothing the digestive tract and reducing "gut inflammation." The Benefit: It stimulates digestive enzymes and can help reduce bloating or morning nausea. Goal: Improved gut health and reduced muscle soreness. Combining red-fleshed apples (such as the Redlove or Weirouge varieties) with celery in a juice creates a potent, anti-inflammatory beverage that is nutritionally superior to standard green apple and celery mixes. While regular apples have white flesh, red-fleshed apples are "bio-fortified" by nature, containing significantly higher levels of antioxidants throughout the entire fruit, not just the skin. People work hard to steal money. After a year of reflection, I'm back with a sound that feels like home. "Hold Me Close" is officially out—think cinematic soul meets raw, intimate storytelling. The wait is over. Let's dance.

Today on another encore edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Peter Knego, son of actor Peter Coe and model Rosalee Calvert. Peter doesn't pull many punches on this episode as we discuss the mercurial character that was his father. Known for his roles in films from the 1940s onward, be it Gung Ho!, Gypsy Wildcat or Louisiana Hussy, Coe is best remembered for his for his wild offscreen ways, his dark good look, his many wives and more. In fact, many will remember Peter Coe best for his horror film career in films like House of Frankenstein & The Mummy's Curse both which starred Lon Cheyney Jr. However it might be his lasting friendship at the very end of his life with b-movie director Ed Wood that piques the most interest with fans. In fact, Wood died in Coe's apartment. And our guest Peter was there to witness it all believe it or not. We discuss this fascinating and disturbing story coming up.   We also discuss Peter's mother, model Rosalee Cavlert who might have been the most famous model of the 1950s and 1960s. In fact, while she did act, she often played a model in films like Made in Paris and The Oscar, both starring host Josh Mills' mother, Edie Adams. We talk about Peter's time with his mother growing up pretty much in poverty while somehow living in an exclusive enclave of Los Angeles. The story Peter weaves about how this happens is fascinating. Along the way we discuss couture designer James Galanos, Atlantic Records music mogul Ahmet Ertegun, how Coe escaped the Nazi's, the cult rock band Sparks, Bela Lugosi, having dinner with Mel Brooks, grade Z actor Paul Marco & much more. Peter is nothing if not self-effacing, straight forward, funny, matter of fact and quite happy to tell us both the good and the bad of growing up the child of a celebrity. Take a listen. Everyone has a story. Rarely are they this unique.

The gaming industry loves reboots, remakes, redos—any so-called classic from the past that can generate some easy cash. But though these rereleases supposedly honor what came before, they often do the opposite, serving only to obscure all memory of the originals.  It's a rewriting of history, essentially, with the original development teams, scripts, art, and musical scores all lost in the wake of a remake that only serves itself. The recent Lunar Remastered Collection epitomizes this problem, showing just how, under the pretense of preservation, these remakes don't elevate their forbears...they erase them. Please visit lostnostalgia.com for more insightful news and musings into everything obscure, weird, and wistfully vintage! Thanks to Decktonic for the opening/closing tune!

We finally reviewed the car movie starring Michael Keaton and Long Duck Dong, and it's glorious! A fictional Japanese Automotive company decided to expand production into the US in the mid 1980's…..a lot like the actual companies really did.  And the Japanese have a wholly different work ethic than do regular old Union US Auto Workers.  And that's true - or was back then. And a well intentioned but perpetually lucky Union Leader talks them into saving an abandoned US automotive plant that was the center of their town. The Japanese agreed, but only if the plant could be run with kaizen; a process of continuous improvement and dedication to work above all else.  So….that didn't work at all.  But in the end, to save the plant, and save the town, the Japanese and the Americans work together to make something great….and by that, I mean the effort, not the cars.  8 Corndogs! The post K&F Show #301: The Belt Alignment Conundrum; Car Movie Review: Michael Keaton's “Gung Ho!” first appeared on The Muscle Car Place.

Layoffs in traditionally American male workplaces, especially the auto industry, had landed innumerable men on their living room couches - a stark contrast to the seventies when a total of six men reported being stay-at-home dads in America. That's right, just six. This resulted in many of their wives having to head into the workplace themselves to help make ends meet, but it also meant these men were forced to tackle domestic responsibilities previously foreign to them. You know, like their kids. For those of us who grew up in the eighties, a movie like this was a staple of cable TV. It's popularity coincided with the rise of HBO and Home Video rentals, so it was in constant rotation in a lot of households. It was also the launching point for stardom for its lead actor, Michael Keaton, and original screenwriter, John Hughes. So grab your woobie, hide the chili from the baby, and get ready to make some home improvements (220, 221…whatever it takes) as Ben Carpenter and I discuss “Mr. Mom” from 1983 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover on this episode: The discussion between Jack and factory workers about the movie Rocky where Jack says "when you're down, you're not necessarily out." A worker then imitates the Rocky theme song. Jack later heeds his own advice, and his turnaround montage uses the Rocky theme song. In the scene where Jeffrey Tambor's character fires the engineers, he reassures them that "you guys are terrific engineers. You're too good not to catch on somewhere." Michael Keaton's character Jack replies, "Where are we gonna catch on? Nagasaki?" Three years later Keaton starred in “Gung Ho”, a film which opened with his character, an automotive factory foreman, traveling to Japan to convince a Japanese automaker to reopen the factory. This film wasn't released until a year or two later in some countries as in 1983 Michael Keaton was an unknown outside the USA and although Terri Garr was slightly better known, she wasn't considered a big enough name to carry the film. By the mid 1980s Keaton had a couple of moderate size hit films behind him so the film finally crept out into some cinemas or onto video. Welcome to another episode of The Video Store Podcast. Today, I am recommending a selection of films that will hopefully not only entertain, but offer a look at the blending and clashing of 1980s American and Japanese cultures. Whether you're a cinephile or just looking for something interesting, these picks will surely add some flavor to your movie night.First up, we have "Gung Ho" from 1986. Directed by Ron Howard, this comedy explores the clash of work cultures when a Japanese company takes over an American car factory. Michael Keaton shines as the foreman trying to bridge the divide. The film is a light-hearted, but it takes on serious themes like globalization and labor relations, making it both fun and thought-provoking at the same time. Although most people focus on the lightness of the movie.Next, we have "Tokyo Pop" from 1988. This one is a hidden gem. It follows the journey of an American singer who travels to Japan. Not only does it feature catchy music, but it also delves into the intricacies of culture shock and relationships. It's a fascinating look at the late eighties music scene and cultural exchange, presented in a vibrant, almost documentary style.Moving on, we look at "Black Rain," directed by Ridley Scott in 1989. This film is a gritty, neon-lit action thriller that explores the underworld of Osaka through the eyes of two New York cops, played by Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia. The film is well-known for its atmospheric cinematography and intense action sequences. It does a great job of capturing the essence of Japan's urban landscape in a dramatic, almost noir-like manner.Lastly, we have "Mr. Baseball" from 1992. In this sports comedy, Tom Selleck stars as an aging New York Yankee who is traded to a team in Japan. The movie is a humorous and heartfelt look at the struggles and surprises of adapting to a new culture and sports environment. It's especially notable for its insights into the differences between American and Japanese baseball. Each of these films offers a unique perspective on American-Japanese relationships, mixing humor, drama, and action. So, grab some popcorn and enjoy these cross-cultural adventures from the comfort of your couch. What goes into human decision-making? If you listened to the previous episode of the show with Dr Melina Moleskis on decision-making, then you'll know what's coming next.   If you didn't, then don't worry; you can listen to that after this.My guest on this episode is Ben Cattaneo, a friend of the show and the founder of The Decision-Making Studio, a startup that helps clients to make better decisions. In our discussion, we pick up some of the themes I discussed with Melina and explore others. Since Ben's background is in risk — he hosts the All Things Risk podcast — we explore how, in an uncertain world, making good decisions is critical. On the episode, you'll hear about: Ben's experiences of founding The Decision Making Studio;the importance of integrating human elements into decision-making processes;the FOCUS framework for improving decision quality;the need to blend art and science in making decisions;the flaws in classic MBA case studies for teaching decision-making and the benefits of looking at less-known examples for deeper insights;the need to shift towards embracing uncertainty as a natural part of decision-making;the complexity and importance of decision-making in both personal and organizational contexts.and much more.Resources Part One of this series with Dr Melina Moleskis on Decision-Making: https://www.humanriskpodcast.com/dr-melina-moleskis-on-decision-making-part-one/ Blockbuster Netflix story: https://finshots.in/archive/the-incredible-netflix-story-you-didnt-know/ Comedian Des Bishop on Mindfulness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yU_wLC0NlgU James Clear on Tattoos, Haircuts & Hats: https://jamesclear.com/3-2-1/february-1-2024 You can find Ben via his Decision Making Studio website: https://thedecisionmaking.studio/ Ben's All Things Risk podcast is available on all platforms and here:  https://www.allthingsrisk.co.uk/ The episode of his show featuring Paula Reid who cycled across Ukraine: https://www.allthingsrisk.co.uk/2024/04/02/ep-215-paula-reid-on-cycling-across-ukraine/ The Decision-Making Studio https://thedecisionmaking.studio/ Ben's Decision Reaction Videos are available via his account on LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-cattaneo/ The specific episodes he refers to on the show: Mark Gilmour's race in Morocco: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/ben-cattaneo_decisionmaking-decisionreactions-activity-7183537246388518912-jBQR?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop The movie ‘Gung Ho': https://www.linkedin.com/posts/ben-cattaneo_decisionmaking-activity-7155084173228077056-iX2H?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop Relevant episodes of the Human Risk podcast: Ben on ‘All Things Risk': https://www.humanriskpodcast.com/all-things-human-risk-crosscast/Alison Taylor on 'Doing The Right Thing': https://www.humanriskpodcast.com/alison-taylor-on-doing-the-right-thing/Professor Bent Flyvbjerg on 'How Big Things Get Done': https://www.humanriskpodcast.com/professor-bent-flyvbjerg-on-how-big-things-get-done/

We had the pleasure of interviewing Bokassa over Zoom video!Over ten songs and 30 minutes, Bokassa is as diverse as ever on their new full length “All Out of Dreams”. The power trio offers everything from riffy stoner metal in "Bradford Death Squadron", almost progressive skatepunk in "No More Good Days", 45 seconds of metallic hardcore in "Everyone Fails In The End" to laid-back Izzy Stradlin bottle neck-riffing on the desert rocker “Gung Ho”. Not to mention the hooky and anthemic title track. In other words, the band has not become less fond of mixing genres over the years! In an age where everything sounds the same, it has also always been important to Bokassa that each record is sonically different from the previous one. Therefore, they have been very conscious of how this record should sound. Where, for example, the debut "Divide & Conquer" had a noisy soundscape and 2021's "Molotov Rocktail" had a more playful and bigger rock sound, "All Out Of Dreams" has a slightly more raw metallic sound. This can clearly be seen in the conscious choice to go for a snare drum sound that brings to mind 90s metal, rock and punk ala Clutch, Helmet, Therapy? Or The Vandals' "Live Fast Diarrhea”, too name a few.The album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Tue Madsen (Meshuggah, BabyMetal, Madball, Sick Of It All, The Haunted) in Antfarm Studio in Denmark in June 2022. The band also has guest artists for the first time, in the form of Lou Koller from the NYHC legends Sick Of It All and Aaron Beam from the stoner rockers Red Fang.We want to hear from you! Toys are getting a little messy. You have what seem to be hits like the MOTU x TMNT Crossover that keep gaining steam. But then you have what we feel are flops like the Hiya Joe line and their new Gung Ho. Some are inadvertently messy, like making a 5 PoA line out of figures that were originally 5 PoA. I'm looking at you Phantom Menace Retro Collection. Some have got to know, right? Unfortunately, not the Transformers team. Or, maybe they do?
