The gaming industry loves reboots, remakes, redos—any so-called classic from the past that can generate some easy cash. But though these rereleases supposedly honor what came before, they often do the opposite, serving only to obscure all memory of the originals.  It's a rewriting of history, essentially, with the original development teams, scripts, art, and musical scores all lost in the wake of a remake that only serves itself. The recent Lunar Remastered Collection epitomizes this problem, showing just how, under the pretense of preservation, these remakes don't elevate their forbears...they erase them. Please visit lostnostalgia.com for more insightful news and musings into everything obscure, weird, and wistfully vintage! Thanks to Decktonic for the opening/closing tune!

We finally reviewed the car movie starring Michael Keaton and Long Duck Dong, and it's glorious! A fictional Japanese Automotive company decided to expand production into the US in the mid 1980's…..a lot like the actual companies really did.  And the Japanese have a wholly different work ethic than do regular old Union US Auto Workers.  And that's true - or was back then. And a well intentioned but perpetually lucky Union Leader talks them into saving an abandoned US automotive plant that was the center of their town. The Japanese agreed, but only if the plant could be run with kaizen; a process of continuous improvement and dedication to work above all else.  So….that didn't work at all.  But in the end, to save the plant, and save the town, the Japanese and the Americans work together to make something great….and by that, I mean the effort, not the cars.  8 Corndogs! The post K&F Show #301: The Belt Alignment Conundrum; Car Movie Review: Michael Keaton's “Gung Ho!” first appeared on The Muscle Car Place.

80's Flick Flashback

It's easy to see why this 80s Flick resonated at the time. Layoffs in traditionally American male workplaces, especially the auto industry, had landed innumerable men on their living room couches - a stark contrast to the seventies when a total of six men reported being stay-at-home dads in America. That's right, just six. This resulted in many of their wives having to head into the workplace themselves to help make ends meet, but it also meant these men were forced to tackle domestic responsibilities previously foreign to them. You know, like their kids. For those of us who grew up in the eighties, a movie like this was a staple of cable TV. It's popularity coincided with the rise of HBO and Home Video rentals, so it was in constant rotation in a lot of households. It was also the launching point for stardom for its lead actor, Michael Keaton, and original screenwriter, John Hughes. So grab your woobie, hide the chili from the baby, and get ready to make some home improvements (220, 221…whatever it takes) as Ben Carpenter and I discuss “Mr. Mom” from 1983 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover on this episode: The discussion between Jack and factory workers about the movie Rocky where Jack says "when you're down, you're not necessarily out." A worker then imitates the Rocky theme song. Jack later heeds his own advice, and his turnaround montage uses the Rocky theme song. In the scene where Jeffrey Tambor's character fires the engineers, he reassures them that "you guys are terrific engineers. You're too good not to catch on somewhere." Michael Keaton's character Jack replies, "Where are we gonna catch on? Nagasaki?" Three years later Keaton starred in “Gung Ho”, a film which opened with his character, an automotive factory foreman, traveling to Japan to convince a Japanese automaker to reopen the factory. This film wasn't released until a year or two later in some countries as in 1983 Michael Keaton was an unknown outside the USA and although Terri Garr was slightly better known, she wasn't considered a big enough name to carry the film. By the mid 1980s Keaton had a couple of moderate size hit films behind him so the film finally crept out into some cinemas or onto video. Welcome to another episode of The Video Store Podcast. Today, I am recommending a selection of films that will hopefully not only entertain, but offer a look at the blending and clashing of 1980s American and Japanese cultures. Whether you're a cinephile or just looking for something interesting, these picks will surely add some flavor to your movie night.First up, we have "Gung Ho" from 1986. Directed by Ron Howard, this comedy explores the clash of work cultures when a Japanese company takes over an American car factory. Michael Keaton shines as the foreman trying to bridge the divide. The film is a light-hearted, but it takes on serious themes like globalization and labor relations, making it both fun and thought-provoking at the same time. Although most people focus on the lightness of the movie.Next, we have "Tokyo Pop" from 1988. This one is a hidden gem. It follows the journey of an American singer who travels to Japan. Not only does it feature catchy music, but it also delves into the intricacies of culture shock and relationships. It's a fascinating look at the late eighties music scene and cultural exchange, presented in a vibrant, almost documentary style.Moving on, we look at "Black Rain," directed by Ridley Scott in 1989. This film is a gritty, neon-lit action thriller that explores the underworld of Osaka through the eyes of two New York cops, played by Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia. The film is well-known for its atmospheric cinematography and intense action sequences. It does a great job of capturing the essence of Japan's urban landscape in a dramatic, almost noir-like manner.Lastly, we have "Mr. Baseball" from 1992. In this sports comedy, Tom Selleck stars as an aging New York Yankee who is traded to a team in Japan. The movie is a humorous and heartfelt look at the struggles and surprises of adapting to a new culture and sports environment. It's especially notable for its insights into the differences between American and Japanese baseball. Each of these films offers a unique perspective on American-Japanese relationships, mixing humor, drama, and action. So, grab some popcorn and enjoy these cross-cultural adventures from the comfort of your couch. If you listened to the previous episode of the show with Dr Melina Moleskis on decision-making, then you'll know what's coming next.   If you didn't, then don't worry; you can listen to that after this.My guest on this episode is Ben Cattaneo, a friend of the show and the founder of The Decision-Making Studio, a startup that helps clients to make better decisions. In our discussion, we pick up some of the themes I discussed with Melina and explore others. Since Ben's background is in risk — he hosts the All Things Risk podcast — we explore how, in an uncertain world, making good decisions is critical. On the episode, you'll hear about: Ben's experiences of founding The Decision Making Studio;the importance of integrating human elements into decision-making processes;the FOCUS framework for improving decision quality;the need to blend art and science in making decisions;the flaws in classic MBA case studies for teaching decision-making and the benefits of looking at less-known examples for deeper insights;the need to shift towards embracing uncertainty as a natural part of decision-making;the complexity and importance of decision-making in both personal and organizational contexts.and much more.Resources Part One of this series with Dr Melina Moleskis on Decision-Making: https://www.humanriskpodcast.com/dr-melina-moleskis-on-decision-making-part-one/ Blockbuster Netflix story: https://finshots.in/archive/the-incredible-netflix-story-you-didnt-know/ Comedian Des Bishop on Mindfulness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yU_wLC0NlgU James Clear on Tattoos, Haircuts & Hats: https://jamesclear.com/3-2-1/february-1-2024 You can find Ben via his Decision Making Studio website: https://thedecisionmaking.studio/ Ben's All Things Risk podcast is available on all platforms and here:  https://www.allthingsrisk.co.uk/ The episode of his show featuring Paula Reid who cycled across Ukraine: https://www.allthingsrisk.co.uk/2024/04/02/ep-215-paula-reid-on-cycling-across-ukraine/ The Decision-Making Studio https://thedecisionmaking.studio/ Ben's Decision Reaction Videos are available via his account on LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-cattaneo/ The specific episodes he refers to on the show: Mark Gilmour's race in Morocco: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/ben-cattaneo_decisionmaking-decisionreactions-activity-7183537246388518912-jBQR?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop The movie ‘Gung Ho': https://www.linkedin.com/posts/ben-cattaneo_decisionmaking-activity-7155084173228077056-iX2H?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop Relevant episodes of the Human Risk podcast: Ben on ‘All Things Risk': https://www.humanriskpodcast.com/all-things-human-risk-crosscast/Alison Taylor on 'Doing The Right Thing': https://www.humanriskpodcast.com/alison-taylor-on-doing-the-right-thing/Professor Bent Flyvbjerg on 'How Big Things Get Done': https://www.humanriskpodcast.com/professor-bent-flyvbjerg-on-how-big-things-get-done/

We had the pleasure of interviewing Bokassa over Zoom video!Over ten songs and 30 minutes, Bokassa is as diverse as ever on their new full length “All Out of Dreams”. The power trio offers everything from riffy stoner metal in "Bradford Death Squadron", almost progressive skatepunk in "No More Good Days", 45 seconds of metallic hardcore in "Everyone Fails In The End" to laid-back Izzy Stradlin bottle neck-riffing on the desert rocker “Gung Ho”. Not to mention the hooky and anthemic title track. In other words, the band has not become less fond of mixing genres over the years! In an age where everything sounds the same, it has also always been important to Bokassa that each record is sonically different from the previous one. Therefore, they have been very conscious of how this record should sound. Where, for example, the debut "Divide & Conquer" had a noisy soundscape and 2021's "Molotov Rocktail" had a more playful and bigger rock sound, "All Out Of Dreams" has a slightly more raw metallic sound. This can clearly be seen in the conscious choice to go for a snare drum sound that brings to mind 90s metal, rock and punk ala Clutch, Helmet, Therapy? Or The Vandals' "Live Fast Diarrhea”, too name a few.The album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Tue Madsen (Meshuggah, BabyMetal, Madball, Sick Of It All, The Haunted) in Antfarm Studio in Denmark in June 2022. The band also has guest artists for the first time, in the form of Lou Koller from the NYHC legends Sick Of It All and Aaron Beam from the stoner rockers Red Fang.We want to hear from you! Toys are getting a little messy. You have what seem to be hits like the MOTU x TMNT Crossover that keep gaining steam. But then you have what we feel are flops like the Hiya Joe line and their new Gung Ho. Some are inadvertently messy, like making a 5 PoA line out of figures that were originally 5 PoA. I'm looking at you Phantom Menace Retro Collection. Some have got to know, right? Unfortunately, not the Transformers team. Or, maybe they do?

“That's one more thing I detest about war. It's not over when it ends.” Lady Rowan Join Maisie Dobbs as she takes on a challenging case when she is hired by Mr. Waite, an august person who strives to control everything and everyone in his circle. He has met his match with Maisie who works in her own time and in her own way. She knows the value of letting fact, thoughts, observations, and feelings simmer whereas ‘Mr. Gungho' is full steam ahead. Jacqueline Winspear masterfully weaves mystery with history in this sequel. Readers are invited to solve who's behind 3 murders and how they are connected, while at the same time readers discover a well hidden piece from the past, The Order of the White Feather. Maisie is simultaneously searching for Mr. Waite's missing daughter, Charlotte Waite, and struggling to help bridge the growing chasm between her and her father, while also helping Billy overcome his precarious method of coping with his injured leg before it injures his family. (And we thought we had a full plate!) Inspector Stratton returns and readers learn that he is a widower with a young son. Dr. Dene, the witty and kind doctor that worked his way across the tracks, is eager to help our hard- working heroine. (Miss Dobbs doubtlessly has sparked their interest.) Join us in solving these murders before Inspector Stratton and company send the wrong guy up the river. What an amazing job Winspear does of showing both sides of the situation! In a male dominated profession, Maisie excels not by complaining and pointing out injustices, but by action. Actions that are well-thought out and executed with the precision of a surgeon. She plans her day and works toward that end but is not frazzled when a curve ball is thrown her way. We could learn much from Maisie! Let us slow down and strive to thrive and help others to do likewise. “May I not sit in judgment. May my decisions be for the good of all concerned. May my work bring peace.”  Maisie's silent prayer reminds me of the street sweeper quote by Martin Luther King,Jr. May we always do our best in the plethora of endeavors that lie before us.. Tanya Alvarez, Co-Founder, and CEO of OwnersUP help B2B service-based business owners solve their biggest challenges in 11 min each week through facilitated peer groups and proprietary progress tracking software. She started her first business at the age of 25 and grew it to be a profitable company from unsettled credit card debt to owning over $1m in gross revenue within the first year. Since then, she has founded, bootstrapped, sold, and invested in several companies. She is currently on a mission to improve the success rate of small businesses. This mission is the source of developing a platform where owners team up and scale faster.Tanya's big secret about defying the odds is always to have a small group of people encourage you to move forward, be your cheerleaders and champions rooting for you, and will refuse to let you fail. It's all about time management and compartmentalizing to get things done. Removing bias to start prioritizing goals, and becoming aware of the problem. When your default is what you're most comfortable with and doing things you prefer, or being biased when you think there's only one way to achieve a goal when there are so many other opportunities out there. Values are the first that Tanya focuses on in the process of facilitating entrepreneurs. When you make decisions that are not clear or prioritized, you will start feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. If you start pursuing goals based on your values, your life becomes seamless. Declare your values, exercise them, find out what lights you up, and picture what you want. Then you'll start seeing the pattern of what you value most. The next step is to rank your values, and then figure out if they will add or take away from you. When dealing with business goals is to go through the lens of capacity. How many clients do you need where you can't take on more, or what is each of your employee's capacity? The next one is sales. What is your closing and marketing conversion? Do you have leads? The third step is once you figure out three different variables. Number one is how much effort and time it'll take you. Number two is impact, looking at the outcome. The last part about goal prioritization is removing the bias. After ranking what's gonna give you the best return on your time and investment, the next thing you wanna do is ask your group of people to validate it.It's a compounding effect when you're part of a group. Not only do they help you remove bias, and let go of the feeling that you're the only one who has to do everything. Once you let go, outsource, and delegate it is an amazing epiphany. In this episode:[01:50] Tanya is like Gung Ho, teaching others how to defy the odds.Having a group of people encouraging you to move forward and refusing to let you fail.Going through that rollercoaster of life and entrepreneurship.[04:00] Having something so much more important to work for.Making sure you're focused on the right things and prioritizing what's important to you.Time management and compartmentalizing to get things done.[07:00] When your default is comfort and only doing what you prefer.Having projects based on bias. How Tanya facilitates entrepreneurs to conceptualize and focus on getting things done.[10:30] Make decisions based on your goals and values.Dealing with business goals is going through the lens of capacity.Having three different variables of effort, impact, and bias removal.[13:30] When you build systems before having a pipeline. Not knowing if the system will resolve a pain point you're resolving...

On episode 21 of Unclear and Present Danger, Jamelle and John discuss the horrifically problematic 1993 thriller “Rising Sun” starring Wesley Snipes and Sean Connery. It's lurid, salacious and incredibly racist, which makes it fertile ground for a discussion of the anti-Japanese panic of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Additional topics include Wesley Snipes' career, Michael Crighton's whole deal, and the question of whether it is even possible to forge a unifying national narrative.Connor Lynch produced this episode.
