On the night of October 1, 2017, the Route 91 Harvest music festival became the site of the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. Stephen Paddock, a 64-year-old high-stakes gambler, opened fire from a suite on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, killing 60 and injuring hundreds more in a horrific 10-minute attack. In this episode, Sean, Jorge, and Eric take a closer look at the chilling timeline of events, the unanswered questions. The boys explore the life of Stephen Paddock, a man who outwardly appeared affluent and unremarkable but harbored deep isolation and paranoia. They detail his meticulous planning for the attack—transporting over 20 suitcases of firearms and ammunition to his hotel room, scouting other major events like Lollapalooza, and setting up surveillance cameras to monitor the hallway outside his suite. Despite these calculated actions, his motive remains a mystery even after an exhaustive year-long FBI investigation. the boys recount the chaos on the festival grounds as gunfire rained down, leaving 22,000 concertgoers scrambling for their lives. They delve into the police response, including the bravery of hotel security guard Jesus Campos, who was shot in the leg while helping pinpoint the shooter's location, and the SWAT team's eventual breach of Paddock's room. Beyond the timeline, Sean, Jorge, and Eric address the long-lasting effects of this tragedy. They examine the debates over bump stocks, which allowed Paddock's weapons to mimic automatic fire, and how this event shaped conversations around gun control in America. Antonio Deon Tarver, born on November 21st in Orlando, Florida is a U.S. Olympic Bronze-Medalist, Philanthropist, Podcast Host, Actor, Boxing commentator and Former U.S. National Gold-Medal winning Boxer. Antonio made his professional debut with his first fight with Joaquin Garcia at the legendary Blue Horizon boxing Venue in Philadelphia in 1997. Throughout his first 16 fights of his career, which he's all won, with an impressive feat of 14 out of 16 of those fights being won by knockout–Tarver quickly became a force to be reckoned with in the boxing world and had so many eyes on him from Florida... All the way to the local boxing hub in Philadelphia. In April of 2003, Tarver was placed in a bout against Montel Griffin, who at the time, was the reigning WBC and IBF light-heavyweight champion. After about a full hour in the ring, 12 rounds and after successfully flooring Griffin in the 1st and 12th rounds of the fight, Antonio was crowned the new champion after a unanimous decision. In May of 2004 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Antonio did something that would surprise many... He was set to do a rematch with Roy Jones Jr where he not only regained the WBC title, but also knocked RJJ out in the 2nd round–Where Jones had only been knocked out once in the then 50-fight entirety of his boxing career. Fast forwarding to 2006 after Antonio had become a household name after defeating Roy Jones, he appeared on the covers of iconic boxing Magazines such as The Ring and KO. He was also given the opportunity to be casted as Mason “The Line” Dixon in the Rocky Balboa installment of the film's franchise that was released the same year. Antonio has since then gone on to be a boxing analyst for Showtime Championship Boxing, a spectator at some of the world's most memorable boxing events and being a co-host on Friday Night Fights. Thank you to Antonio for stopping by the I Am Athlete studio to share his perspective on all things life and giving us insight on his past that built the resilient, brute force of nature that he is. Happy Early Birthday & Happy Scorpio SZN to you as well!

[This blog will always be free to read, but it's also how I pay my bills. So, if you like what you read, please consider a paid subscription. And yes, I do speaking engagements.]This past May, country star Jason Aldean released a new song called “Try That in a Small Town,” which has lyrics that are—there's really no nice way to say this—corny as hell. I've been listening to country music all my life, and I gotta say that Mr. Aldean's latest single sounds as though ChatGPT were asked to write an excessively generic bro country song sung by a white nationalist and this is what we got. There are many commentators correctly pointing out that the song amounts to a symphony of racist dog whistles, but also: I just find it so incredibly boring as to be tedious beyond belief.“Bro country” as a sub-genre tends to be tedious because it prioritizes commercial value to a specific demographic—aggrieved, conservative white men—over storytelling, which, in my humble opinion, is what historically makes country music so damn compelling. I grew up watching CMT (Country Music Television) and listening to country radio, and I firmly believe the ‘90s were a golden age for the genre. George Strait, Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, Trisha Yearwood, Randy Travis, Alan Jackson, etc. — so many catalogues chock-full of superb storytelling. And yet, even that cohort pales in comparison to the greats who became before them: Alabama, Dolly Parton, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, etc. etc. etc. (I'm just rattling these off in no particular order, so please don't get on me for not including one of your faves.)Anyway, in more capable hands, country is a high art and fun as hell. Bro country, on the other hand, is off-brand fast food produced with the specific intention of placating insecure, white, conservative men who perceive the genre as a bastion for their beliefs in a changing world.About two weeks ago, Mr. Aldean released a music video for his new single that left no doubt as to what he was attempting to communicate via the lyrics he sings (but did not write, which ain't that surprising given that Mr. Aldean hasn't written any of his singles since 2009).The music video—which I will not link here but you're than welcome to google it—has Mr. Aldean singing with his band in front of the Maury County Courthouse in Nashville, TN while a montage of violent scenes from protests against white supremacy are projected on the building. The intent of this imagery is very clear: Mr. Aldean is attempting to pander to white nationalists who believe that Black Lives Matter protestors are, somehow, a threat to The Heartland™ and that, somehow, “small towns” are shining beacons of patriotic light in the chaos. It doesn't help that, as many commentators have pointed out, the Maury County Courthouse is the site of the 1927 lynching of Henry Choate, a Black teenager who was murdered by a white mob after being falsely accused of raping a young white woman. The song and video together essentially equate protesting white supremacy with violent crime whilst simultaneously threatening said protestors with violence if they ever do “try that in a small town.”You get the picture. It's racist as f**k, and it should be called out as such. It's so bad, in fact, that CMT pulled the video from rotation only four days after its release, which, in case you're wondering, is extremely rare. So, not great, to say the very least, but there's something else to all this that I believe isn't being discussed enough: what exactly is a “small town”?According to a 2020 report from the U.S. Census Bureau (“America: A Nation of Small Towns”), incorporated places of the small variety are defined as having a population of less than 5,000 residents. Interestingly, under that definition, the report points out that 76 percent of the nation's population live in small towns, and more than 40 percent live in towns with a population of less than 500. Thus, if you randomly pick a resident of the United States at random, it is more than likely that person lives in a small town. Even more interestingly: Jason Aldean is not one of them and never has been. Mr. Aldean was born and raised in Macon, Georgia — which, at more than 157,000 residents, is the fourth largest city in the state and ranks #166 nationally. That may not seem all that high up until you consider it's out of 19,500 incorporated places in the United States. That means Macon has a bigger population than 98.5 percent of places in our country, which isn't too surprising if you know anything about Macon. It has not one but TWO airports. It has six hospitals. It has five college campuses. It has robust local media, print and television. But here's the biggest clue that Macon isn't a “small town”: tens of millions of folks who've never visited Macon have at least heard of it. It's referenced in Margaret Mitchell's “Gone With the Wind” and in a “Simpsons” episode and in countless books on the Civil War given that Macon was the official arsenal of the Confederacy.Mr. Aldean did spend summers with his father in Homestead, Florida — which has a population of over 80,000. That's still a far cry from being a “small town” and even moreso when you consider that it's a suburb of Miami and has a population density several times that of Macon.Mr. Aldean's entire professional career has been spent in Atlanta (pop. 498,715) and Nashville (pop. 689,447), so there's ain't any help there, either. So, it has to be asked: is Mr. Aldean confused? He could be, and I think I may have found a clue as to why.Mr. Aldean, who has shaped his career around projecting the image of a good ole boy from simple beginnings, is an alum of the Windsor Academy, a K-12 private school in Macon that has a not-so-cheap tuition price tag of nearly $9,000 annually for every student in 5th grade and above. Hey, don't worry, y'all: the Windsor Academy has a rigorous financial aid program and offers limited scholarships. Of course, if a student's family does fall behind on tuition payments, barring extraordinary circumstances, they're ineligible to receive financial aid until satisfying delinquent payments.I bring this up because the full student body, across all grades, K-12, is just over 300 students. This could be the reason Mr. Aldean believes he relates to small town life: the vantage point of his small private school experience. So, essentially, with Mr. Aldean, what we have here is a prep school dilettante who was raised in a big city, singing a song he didn't write about an experience he never had, accompanied with a music video of which much of the footage was filmed in Canada.Mr. Aldean has about as much credibility describing the “small town” experience as I would have working alongside the professionals of a NASCAR pit crew, and trust me, folks: you sure as hell don't want me doing that. I respect my limitations.Listen, y'all, this isn't supposed to be literal. We all sense that. Mr. Aldean is not really attempting to describe actual “small town” life. He's trying to pander to a specific feeling of a particular demographic that happily codes their bigotry with information shortcuts.“Small town” does not mean a place that is literally small; it's a symbol of a passed society for which Mr. Aldean and like-minded folks openly pine. It's openly fantasizing for a time in which there was no question that folks who look like Mr. Aldean called all the shots. But even aside from the biggest problem here—the racist bullhorn aspect—it's also just incredibly insulting to folks who live in small towns. It's condescending. It's infantilizing. The vast majority of folks who live in small towns don't feel threatened by those who are different from them. They don't solve their problems with violence. It erases people of color (particularly Black folks), LGBTQ people, religious minorities, and social progressives who are just as much apart of small town life (and always have been). That's what's most glaring about Mr. Aldean's pandering: it's obvious he simply doesn't know the folks who live in small towns beyond his tourism. In 2017, Mr. Aldean was performing onstage at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival when a mass shooter opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, murdering 60 people. It is still the deadliest mass shooting by a lone gunman in American history.I don't blame Mr. Aldean one bit for his response in that moment. I truly don't. He could have used his microphone to urge folks to seek cover. He could have rushed into the crowd to save folks or administer aid. Instead, he ran backstage. I would have done the same thing. I think most folks would. I don't think I would have had the wherewithal to be immediately helpful in that chaos. Then again, I would never release a song, six years later, suggesting otherwise, and that's partly the problem here. Let's hope Mr. Aldean embraces the concept of extending grace and nuance toward others as much as he expects it for himself.Charlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication. Lori is back with Jake and Rob in this episode and as the Co-Chair of the ICCFA Convention, she gives an overview of the event. Jake and Rob both talk about the presentations that they will be giving. ICCFA's Annual Convention is going to be held in Las Vegas from March 22nd to the 25th. For more information and registration details, visit www.ICCFA.com. #iccfa2022 See the complete transcript here: Rob Heppell: Welcome back to the Funeral X podcast. I'm Rob Heppell, and today I'm joined with my Funeral Results Marketing business partner, Jake Johnson, and the director of J3Tech Solutions and Performance Tracker, Lori Salberg. Hey there, Lori. Hey there, Jake. Jake Johnson: What's going on? Happy Friday. Rob Heppell: Yep. Lori Salberg: Hi, Rob, Jake. Rob Heppell: Awesome. Hey, now this is a bit of a unique episode, as we're getting ready for the ICCFA convention that's going to be held in Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino from March 22nd to 25th. Lori's got a special part with that. She's the co-chair of the convention along with John Bolton, and both Jake and I are presenting on Friday, the final day of the convention. So I thought it would be good just to chat about ICCFA and what folks could be in for if they're going to make the trek to Vegas. So Lori, tell us about the convention. You're probably the best person to ask. What's happening this year? Lori Salberg: Yes, I think what's really exciting is that we haven't had a convention for two years. I know from experience, the sales and marketing, ICCFA, did talks in January, and there was just a different buzz in the air because people hadn't been together in a really long time. I don't expect anything less. In fact, I think it's going to be even more exciting going back to Vegas. Being at Mandalay Bay, of course, that's just a great venue. And again, just getting back face to face. But we're already seeing an uptake in registrations and definitely, people are excited to be able to get back. There are so many incredible programs going on. I'm most excited probably that we have four keynote speakers. I think that's more than we normally have. And all of them on topics that I think are most relevant to what's happening in the world and our businesses today. Really, the program starts on that Tuesday and runs through Thursday. There's a banquet Thursday night. But there are leadership sessions starting early on Tuesday, and then a grand opening of the expo hall on Tuesday night with a concert from the Oak Ridge Boys. So that's going to be fun, just to kick off the party, right? And then really, the keynote is what I'm most excited about. We were able to get... John and I talked about it when we were first asked to be co-chairs and we said, "We need to get some big names in here. Even though we have incredible professionals in our industry, let's look to some leaders outside of the industry and how we can look at our businesses differently and drive more opportunities for ourselves." So we thought about really wanting to get one of the sharks from the Shark Tank, and we're so excited that we were able to land Daymond John. So he is going to be heading up that Wednesday night. We've got two keynotes. He's one of them, of course. You really just don't want to miss that. He's going to be talking about branding yourself and branding your brand and all of that. He is a bestselling author of a couple of books related to that. I don't think I need to talk anymore about his credibility, but definitely one to not want to miss. And then that same day, we have Lynne Lancaster. She is an expert on really the generational divide, so she studies generations. We met with her and we talked at length about the change in generations right now is impacting our businesses as a whole, and she's going to talk about that. She's going to talk about the boomers and the Gen Xers and the millennials and gen Ys.
In this special Funeral X episode Rob interviews ICCFA Keynote presenter, Mark Scharenbroich, about his presentation: Nice Bike – Making Meaningful Connections. Immediately following Mark's presentation, Johnson Consulting Group, J3Tech Solutions & Funeral Results Marketing will be hosting Mark's book signing at our booths in the Expo Hall. ICCFA's Annual Convention is going to be held in Las Vegas from March 22nd to the 25th. For more information and registration details, visit www.ICCFA.com. See the complete transcript here: Rob Heppell: Welcome to the Funeral X podcast. I am your host, Robin Heppell from Funeral Results Marketing. This is a special edition of the Funeral X podcast, as we are leading up to the ICCFA Convention that is going to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino on March 22nd to the 25th, 2022. Today, I am joined by one of the keynote speakers for the ICCFA Convention, Mark Scharenbroich. Mark's from Minneapolis, Minnesota and he's the author of 'Nice Bike: Making Meaningful Connections on the Road of Life'. Hey Mark, are you there? Mark Scharenbroich: Rob, I'm with you all the way. Rob Heppell: Okay. Excellent. Now, I'll just let the listeners know that I caught you on your vacation before we put you to work. So, Mark's in Hawaii and enjoying some time with the family, but I really appreciate this opportunity. Hey- Mark Scharenbroich: Oh you're welcome. Great to be with you. Seriously. Rob Heppell: Great. Now, can you give us... I know that you're very well known in the speaking world. You've... A number of awards. You've got an Emmy to your name. Maybe though for the folks in funeral service, just give a little bit of background about yourself. Mark Scharenbroich: I've been in the speaking industry my entire career starting as a... In high school and college, I was in a comedy group that performed in schools and universities. High schools, universities. Ended up going in as a solo presenter, initially speaking to high schools as a high school assembly speaker for 25 years. About 3,500 high schools across North America, every province of Canada, every state in the U.S. And if you want to learn about being a speaker, you learned it in high school gymnasiums, where they are hoping that you fail. And then as kids grew up and got jobs as adults and had meetings, they sat around and said, "Hey, anybody hear of a speaker that they've heard recently?" And they go, "Yes, I heard a guy back in high school. Let me Google him and bring him to our event." And so as kids matured and got businesses, they brought me along. And that's transitioning from education into business. And that's where the career started. But the real message is all about 'Nice Bike' which is our whole brand. Rob Heppell: Mm-hmm. Can you share a little bit of the background without giving it away of what you're going to share in Vegas? Mark Scharenbroich: Well, you were a Harley rider at one point, weren't you Rob? Rob Heppell: Yes. I've had a couple of Harleys back before I was married there, Mark. Mark Scharenbroich: Marriage changed the situation, Rob? Rob Heppell: Yes, sometimes. Twice actually. Mark Scharenbroich: Hey, I'm not a Harley guy. I've never been on a Harley. I've never even sat one to this day. They're cool, don't get me wrong. But I was speaking to a group of educators. I'm from Minneapolis. Flew to Milwaukee for a presentation to educators. And I'm driving to Milwaukee and I realized that I just landed in the Harley Davidson 100 year anniversary for their company, there in Milwaukee. There were half a million bikers at that event. And I was just curious. It just looked cool. And I'd go walk in through there and pull my car over. And I pull over to a venue and you'd see all these Harleys and Harley riders. I remember just seeing these big guys with the big beard, Game of Thrones, tattoos, du-rags,

Carina Bauer, CEO of the Imex Group, spoke with Lisa Grimaldi, Northstar Meeting Group's incentives and destinations editor, about the decisions that led to the show's updated health and safety policy; how attendees and exhibitors have reacted to the news (mostly positive!) and how participants will be able to register their vaccination status. Bauer also discussed the hurdles caused by the U.S.'s strict entry requirements for European and U.K. attendees. Among the topics discussed are: • The considerations that organizers took into account before deciding to require vaccinations (2:50) • How registrants have responded to the news (5:30) • How the IMEX team is preparing for additional challenges related to travel restrictions and quarantine requirements (10:30) • What visitors can expect from IMEX America this year (13:50) • New offerings, including "walking, talking" education sessions and back-of-the-house tours throughout Las Vegas (15:00) • How this year's show will "bring the outside in" with creative space designs (16:20) See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Plus, hear from amazing leaders in entertainment, tech, media & more starting with this week’s guest award-winning chef and restaurateur, Susan Feniger. Susan has had a number of highly successful restaurants across southern California and in Las Vegas and authored six cookbooks over her forty-year career. You’ve seen her on Top Chef Masters and on Food Network’s “Too Hot Tamales.” Susan is a great example of someone who extends her personal brand through everything she does, how she dresses and how she runs her company. Guest Bio Iconic culinarian, author, and entrepreneur may be best known for her Modern Mexican concept, Border Grill restaurants, trucks, and catering, which she runs with her business partner of more than 35 years, Mary Sue Milliken. Now with locations in Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, Downtown LA, LAX Airport, The Huntington Library, and Rose Bowl, Border Grill continues to serve street food-inspired regional Mexican cuisine with a commitment to sustainability and the best quality ingredients. In June 2018, Feniger and Milliken debuted BBQ Mexicana, a fast casual eatery with locations at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, Las Vegas Ballpark, and most recently inside the new Allegiant Stadium. The chefs returned to Santa Monica with Socalo, an all-day California canteen and Mexican Pub, in December 2019. After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in New York, she made a groundbreaking move in joining the nearly all-male kitchen at Chicago’s Le Perroquet, serendipitously meeting the only other woman in the kitchen—Mary Sue Milliken. After working for Wolfgang Puck at Ma Maison in L.A., Feniger went to the French Riviera to further hone her skills, and returned to open City Café with Milliken in 1981, forever changing L.A.’s culinary landscape by introducing eclectic dishes from around the world. That evolved into the larger CITY Restaurant in 1985—and the introduction of Border Grill as a simple spot for authentic home cooking and street foods of Mexico informed by the duo’s treks through the country. A James Beard Award that same year confirmed their impact on the nation’s cuisine. Feniger and Milliken brought their innovative approaches to The Food Network with nearly 400 episodes of the “Too Hot Tamales” and “Tamales World Tour” series. They also were the original co-hosts of the popular food-centric radio show, KCRW’s “Good Food,” in L.A. Susan has co-authored six cookbooks, including Susan Feniger’s Street Food and competed on Bravo’s “Top Chef Masters” in 2010. In 2018, Feniger and Milliken were named the recipients of the fourth annual Julia Child Award from The Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts, marking the first women to be honored. The distinction complements additional accolades, including the Elizabeth Burns Lifetime Achievement Award from the California Restaurant Association in 2013; earned induction into Menu Masters Hall of Fame in 2014; and the 2018 Gold Award from the Los Angeles Times for culinary excellence and innovation in Southern California. Feniger is an active member of the community, and currently sits on the boards of the Scleroderma Research Foundation, L.A. LGBT Center, and L.A. Tourism & Conventions; works closely with Women Chefs and Restaurateurs, Share Our Strength, and Human Rights Campaign; and co-founded Chefs Collaborative. In this special edition of the podcast we meet Ernest Stovall - the Vice President of Sales, Catering and Convention Services, who tells us the behind the scenes story of locking down one of the worlds largest venues and the work going on behind the scenes to bring it back to life. Fascinating insight from a true friend of the events industry!! Enjoy
Nine minutes is just about the amount of time needed to review anything…or so Steve (@LasVegasUK) seems to think. On this episode of ZorkCast Steve introduces a new concept, known as “Nine minutes on…” whereby Michael and Steve spend strictly nine minutes discussing something related to Las Vegas and/or travel. They aren’t allowed to go any further, as Michael has a special buzzer that goes off once the strict nine-minute time limit is up. The first-ever “Nine Minutes On” episode features Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, Las Vegas. Michael and Steve discuss what the hotel rooms are like, how the casino is, and where are the best spots to eat, all in strictly 9 minutes. Michael shares some stories of his own along the way, whilst Steve shifts the focus to include Mandalay Bay’s two other hotel concepts – The Delano and the Four Seasons. The discussion moves onto one of the most attractive elements of Mandalay Bay, the pool area and the fantastic wave pool. We also consider the location of the resort, whilst a negative for some Michael highlights how it is excellent for #AVGeeks due to the resort overlooking the airport. Before Michael and Steve know it, the buzzer is going off, and they have to end their discussion. Are you thinking of staying at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino? Or even just considering dropping in for a bite to eat, or to play in the casino? Our nine-minute snapshot into the resort is the perfect way to make your decision ahead of any Las Vegas trip.Introducing the new co-host for ZorkCast Steve - LasVegasUKFollow him on Twitter @LasVegasUKGuidanceLiving the Mlife: An Introduction – MGM M life Rewards Loyalty ProgramMandalay Bay Las VegasFour Seasons Las VegasDelano Las VegasZorkCast FaceBook Group- JOIN TODAY! Ramsey Denison grew up in a small town in Florida where he spent most of his childhood playing with firecrackers, watching Saved by the Bell, and making terrible movies with his friends at the television station where he worked as a teenager. A member of the editor's guild, Ram has cut over 30 television programs and worked on hit shows like Naked and Afraid, Catfish, and Criss Angel Mindfreak. His debut documentary What Happened In Vegas went to #1 on iTunes documentary chart in June 2018 and drew positive reviews from Village Voice, Los Angeles Times, and The Hollywood Reporter. His second documentary, Money Machine, got a perfect 10 out of 10 review from Film Threat and is slated for theatrical release in July, 2020. MONEY MACHINE MOVIE Synopsis: Los Angeles CA- In his first acclaimed feature WHAT HAPPENED IN VEGAS, director Ramsey Denison exposed violence, murder and corruption within the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Denison's first documentary became a surprise hit that went to #1 on the iTunes documentary chart in June 2018 and in his searing new film MONEY MACHINE, he shines a light on the cover-up and police corruption around the 1 October Vegas mass shooting that killed 58 people during the Route 91 country music festival near the Mandalay Bay Resort. Featuring an exclusive interview with killer Stephen Paddock’s brother Eric, this riveting new documentary feature exposes information MGM Resorts International and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department would prefer to keep secret about what drove mild mannered millionaire gambler Stephen Paddock to open fire on a crowd of over 20,000 people at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival. MONEY MACHINE also features harrowing, never before seen footage of the deadliest mass shooting in US history and examines what really happened to the millions of dollars raised for victims through the #VegasStrong campaign. Called “heartbreakingly intense” by Film Threat in their perfect 10 review, MONEY MACHINE digs into layers of police corruption and collusion between the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and casino owners. On October 1, 2017, Stephen Paddock opened fire on a crowd of over 20,000 concertgoers from his hotel room at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. In a matter of minutes, Paddock killed 58 people and wounded more than 400. It was the largest mass shooting in the history of the United States. Yet, just a couple of years later, Vegas seems to have forgotten about it completely. Needless to say, mass shootings are not good for business, and it didn’t take long for the Vegas money machine to get to work making this one disappear. In the aftermath of remarketing Las Vegas as a safe destination for tourists, many questionable practices were put into place—one of the most shocking being filing a lawsuit against the victims of this devastating tragedy. On top of that, despite the popular #VegasStrong movement and nationwide fundraising, there’s still a huge question of where all that money went. An enthralling documentary about the dark side of the Las Vegas economy, MONEY MACHINE exposes Sin City’s darkest secrets… including its culpability in this country’s deadliest shooting. - Courtesy Cleveland International Film Festival MONEY MACHINE will be released July 3rd via the innovative “Theatrical-At-Home” platform and will screen at select cinema screens across North America in association with Ryan Bruce Levey Film Distribution and PR. Stephen Paddock - The Mind of a Mass Murderer October 1st, 2017, The Route 91 Harvest Music Festival was in full swing on Vegas Boulevard, right in front of the Luxor and across from Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. Everyone was having fun. Country singer, Jason Aldean was performing his last song of the set as the crowd of 22,000 people sang and danced along. At 10:05 P.M., amidst all the music, shots began to ring out in rapid succession. One by one, people dropped to the ground. Concert-goers rushed out in masses trying to get to safety. Ten minutes later, the gunfire stopped. Over 800 people were injured, trampled or hit by gunfire while 52 people lost their lives. “Completely Dumbfounded” Eric Paddock from Orlando, Florida was “completely dumbfounded” when he found out his brother, Stephen Paddock had gone on a shooting spree. It felt like “Mars just fell into the Earth,” he said. For him, he knew his brother as just a guy who stayed at hotels at the strip, gambled his money and attended various shows. Born in Clinton, Iowa as Stephen Craig Paddock, Stephen was the oldest of four sons by Benjamin Paddock - a bank robber who was once arrested for his crimes in 1960. After escaping prison in 1969, Benjamin Paddock was listed on the FBI’s Most Wanted List.

When TV editor Ramsey Denison was jailed for simply reporting police brutality on the Las Vegas strip, he was inspired to investigate the Las Vegas Police Department. His investigation would lead him right up to the biggest mass shooting in American history. In this damning exposé, he reveals that the police know more than they are letting on about what really happened at the Mandalay Bay Resort, where 59 people were killed. Uncovering a long legacy of cavalier methods and dire consequences, civilian fatalities, unconstitutional arrests and embellished crime reports, this doc paints an incriminating picture of a police department where the officers are above the law. By Director Ramsey Denison: “When I drove into Vegas a couple years ago, making a documentary about police corruption was the furthest thing from my mind; I’d come to relax. I’d just finished editing a programme about cops tracking down bad guys - the notion that cops could be the bad guys was not something I’d spent much time thinking about. That all changed when my friend Rhett Nielson and I saw police officers torturing a stranger. I called 911 and reported the incident. A couple minutes later, I got beat up, arrested, and thrown in jail by those same cops. I reported officers Mark Belanger, Kyle Frett, and Jared Casper but LVMPD’s Internal Affairs department decided to do nothing about it. Officer Cole Erskine’s police report was full of fiction, written to justify the brutality. The club where my arrest occurred told me they had no footage because their cameras weren’t recording that night. Without video, it was three police officers’ words against mine and Rhett’s. In a town where you can get beaten up, arrested, and thrown in jail simply for making a phone call to report police brutality, I couldn’t help but wonder what else the LVMPD has done. I discovered that behind the glittering lights, the real Las Vegas is a rigged game of corrupt policing and institutional cover ups.” For news and updates go to: what-happened-in-vegas

From a corner suite on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, a 64-year-old gunman — whose name merits no mention in this space — unleashed a hail of gunfire on an innocent crowd of 22,000 people attending a county music festival. He fired on the crowd for roughly ten minutes, killing at least 58 and injuring 527 others. In this week's podcast segment, Jim and Doug discuss what we know so far, and what the tragedy means for the future.
If you're listening to this the week it comes out, I'm going to break away from the usual format of the show to editorialize that this was a tough week, no? Sunday night, 59 people were killed and more than 520 people were injured when a gunman shot at a group of 22,000 concert-goers from 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is now the deadliest mass shooting in recent history. Monday morning was not only a day of somber mourning, head shaking, anger, and grief. But breaking through all the bleakness, were people like Chris who hosts Faces and Aces Las Vegas, Tweeting updates and how others can help. And in The Story Behind Discussion Group on Facebook, I wanted to thank everyone who shared their stories and memories they have from Vegas: Scott, Jarrod, Hannah, Mona, Ro, Glenn and Jessica. It may seem weird to try to do an episode about a whole city, and I will be the first to admit that I can never fully do it justice. But the more I thought about this bright, bustling city in the middle of a desert, the more interested I became in its history. I'm your host, Emily Prokop, and this is The Story Behind Las Vegas.
